Language Learning Tips!

This is my first ‘masterpost’ which is inspired by BBC’s language learning website. Please leave any of your own tips or tricks from your language-learning journey as well for others!

1. Crosswords - These are really useful for solidifying vocabulary you’ve learned from a certain chapter and it can be more fun than quizlet or memrise. It’s a nice way to twist things up every now and then. You can make your own crosswords here. I recommend doing them more than once as a way to review old vocabulary as well.

2. Actually Use Your Target Language - I am quite guilty of NOT doing this because I don’t have anyone around me who knows Japanese. With that being said, you should still be speaking and writing in your target language as this is a part of exposure. You don’t have to be talking to someone else to speak your target language. You can talk to yourself for 5 minutes in the mirror or in our head while getting ready in the morning. Little conversations with yourself like this actually do help, so do them! Another way to use your language is to keep your bullet journal, planner, or diary in your target language. You can even find fun prompts online to write essays or express your thoughts on in your target language.

3. Find Fun and Foreign Reading Material - The usual reading material that you will see people use is academic novels and newspapers. This is great for expanding a more formal kind of vocabulary, but don’t be afraid to use magazines, which use a more every-day-type language. This can help you read faster since it will most likely include vocabulary and grammar structures that you know.Familiarizing yourself with the language in many forms is the key to fluency!

New SAT Score!

I've been prepping using Prepscholar lately for SAT. The one I took in June just had the scores released and I'm so proud! I increased a whole 80 points and I can feel myself getting closer to my goal! I used to have a 1360 but I just got a 1440, 1450 with super score! I only increased in math last time but it increased a lot to 760 and I'm incredibly happy. Hard work truly does payoff - whether you see the results immediately or not. I want to focus on really improving my reading without neglecting math now. I truly recommend this program for people who have enough money for and can push themselves to go online for at least one hour a day. There is a money-back guarantee but I don't think I'll be using it! Good luck this summer on your goals of writing your essays or improving your scores. You can do it for sure!

I’ve been on vacation in the north and I got to visit Kinokuniya and Muji. When I got to Muji I was so excited I forgot to take pictures, though. This is what I took in Kinokuniya. I didn’t get anything there but I bought a bunch of stuff in Muji and I absolutely love the stores and vibes they give off. I wish they had these in Florida! I’ll be off to college next year, hopefully in a place near these stores!

Just a quick update on plans for the new year: I really want to commit to the productivity challenge so I’m going to be starting a bujo. Pics to come!

How have you guys been spending your break? Has it been productive? I know I haven’t been as much so as I wanted, but it’s okay! I have tonight and tomorrow to play catch up :)

Name: My name is Ada. Nicknames: My friends call me Trash, but that’s just an inside joke, haha. On here, I’ll just stick with Ada. Zodiac sign: I’m a Capricorn and yikes, I fit pretty much all of the stereotypes.   Height: 5′2″ // 157.5 cm Orientation: Aromantic and asexual  Nationality: I’m American, but I can confidently say that I belong in Japan.   Favorite fruit: Cantaloupe, without a doubt. Japanese cantaloupe is so good, I’m in tears.  Favorite season: Definitely fall, because I’m unable to tolerate any temperature that isn’t mild. Favorite book: The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. I received a copy of the unabridged version for my birthday last year, and I can’t wait until I have time to read it! We read the abridged version in 7th grade, and I fell in love.  Favorite flower: I’ll always love lilacs, gardenias, and daffodils.  Favorite scent: I recently got a citrus and sage scented candle from the clearance aisle at Walmart, and it smells so good! Also, lilacs and gardenias have an amazing scent. Usually my candles are one of those. Favorite color: Napier green, Oxford blue, and bright orange. Favorite animal: It has to be a cat. But jellyfish are a close second.  Coffee, tea, or hot cocoa: My favorite will always be tea. I was already a fan of tea before I came to Japan, but now that I’m here, and drinking tea with every single meal, I don’t know how I’m going to survive without drinking 7 cups a day once I head home to America! I didn’t like green tea before I came to Japan, but now I think it’s delicious. Brown tea is really good though, and chai is another favorite of mine. My goal is to try milk tea / boba while I’m here. I don’t really like coffee. In the fall and winter, I’m always down for a cup of hot chocolate. Average sleep hours: On school nights, I average a solid 8 hours. I can survive with 7 if I don’t have to do a lot the next day. I have a chronic illness that drains me of energy really quickly, so I have to make sure that I get enough sleep.   Cat or dog person: Cats for sure. I really, really miss my cats, and they’re a solid 65% of why I want to return to America. Favorite fictional character: Kaizuka Inaho from Aldnoah.Zero. I don’t think I can advocate for this show enough, even though it’s awful. It’s my favorite show, and everyone pls watch it. I relate to Inaho on a lot of levels as far as personality goes. Before I watched A/Z, I had never really found a character to relate to, but Inaho is that character. Number of blankets you sleep with: Right now, since it’s summer in Japan, I’m only sleeping with one. However, usually I sleep with two or three. Also, in the winter, I have a heated mattress on my bed (I cannot tolerate the cold). Dream trip: Japan. I honestly don’t care where in Japan. I don’t know if this counts as a dream trip anymore, since I’m currently here. This is all I’ve wanted for the past two years, and now I’m here, which is surreal in a lot of ways. I guess my next dream trip is to come back for college.  Blog created: I made this blog in October of 2016 as a Japanese langblr, and a place to blog about my trip (wow that worked out well, didn’t it...)
