Why hello everyone! This is my brand new studyblr! (And third or fourth introduction.) I’m originally @mystic-musicblr​, which was my sideblog, but I’ve decided to move my studyblr into a separate blog so I can do a bit more with the blog. ✨ I love to draw a lot. My icon is the start of an old piece I did last year, but never got around to finishing it, so it’s temporary for right now.

🎻 I’m a sophomore this upcoming year first generation student and an alternate resident assistance for the 2020-2021 year.

🎻 My major is music industry, with my emphasizes/area in multi-instrumental that I’m struggling to change to applied for violin (really wish I could do viola but it’s out of my hands for now as I don’t have a viola)

🎻 This upcoming semester I’m not overloading myself too much with classes, only with 16 credits, so I won’t die under the pressure of what I did this past semester (spring 2020) with 18 credits 😅😭. Though thanks to switching to online classes, I actually passed my spring semester that greatly brought my GPA up so I was happy and proud of myself for being able to do 18 credits despite the transition into having more online classes. Plus, three of my classes are online this semester (WVU is making a lot of classes hybrid and/or fully online since they are limiting sizes in classrooms to make sure we don’t spread COVID-19 around.), so I should be good. 

🎻I really wish I could minor in French or History, yet I can’t really afford it, don’t have time, or room to do it, which really sucks. The arts do take up a lot of your time and to people who can do double majors or minors in certain majors that demand a lot, you get major props. Maybe one day when I do graduate I’ll minor in French or History.

Studying and Self Care don’t have to be mutually exclusive 

I have recently finished my master thesis. The whole time frame was three months, but that included the data collection and everything. So I wrote the main thing basically in about 5 weeks. As you can imagine, I did little else in this time. 

But as intense as this time was, it taught me a lot of things. One of them is how you can include some self care rituals all while being productive. Because on some days, time is of the essence. Most of these are for studying at home, but some of them might also work at a library or at your coffee shop of choice. 

Hair masks - I admit I have only discovered those pretty recently, but oh my god. They are kind of a game changer. And they are perfect for a little self care while you study. Use one of your breaks to put a mask in your dry hair, brush it in and go back to your desk. You can let it sit in there for as long as you like, the longer the better. And at the end of your day (or in a break), you can wash it out. 

(Secret tip: ROOTS from Lush is more of a scalp mask than a hair mask and you can’t leave it in for hours, BUT it’s full of that minty cool tingly heat and you put it directly on your scalp and you guys, it is insane. It feels so good. One of my friends said it pulled her migraine right out of her head.)

Similar to hair masks are face masks which can also easily be integrated into your study routine. Face masks should be left on for around ten to fifteen minutes (depending on the brand). You can put them on, set a timer on your phone, get some study time in and then take a quick bathroom break to wash it off and apply some moisturizer. You’ll feel much fresher and your skin will thank you. 

Essential oils - Look, this isn’t a new thing, so I’m not going into too much detail here. But essential oils can help you focus and relax and they just smell so nice. You can put them in a diffuser if you have one, but you can also put small drops on your temples and/or on your wrists. 

I can’t be the only one who always gets cold when I sit at my desk for an extended period of time? It’s kind of the worst. So I put on all of my fuzzy socks, I wrap a blanket around my legs, but sometimes you just need that tiny bit extra? So I always made myself a hot water bottle along with my tea. It’s kind of the best. You can put it on your tummy or on your feet and enjoy the blissful warmth.

Ieri ho trovato questo ( clicca qui ), questo articolo sostanzialmente spiega che questi blog danno consigli di studio, alimentazione (durante gli esami non so voi ma io mangio davvero lo schifo), spronano a studiare con frasi motivazionali perché l’obiettivo non è un bel voto, ma studiare per conoscere, perché la conoscenza è potere! Inoltre scrivono appunti fantastici e hanno un sacco di oggetti di cancelleria troppo belli e niente volevo rendervi partecipe della mia scoperta.

purtroppo blog italiani di questo tipo ne ho trovati davvero pochi (1-2), mentre di altre zone del mondo ce ne sono millemilioni.

Why I don’t buy textbooks and other course materials before the semester begins

Hello everyone, I’d thought share a small little masterpost based on my experience from freshmen year with textbooks. I know everyone has different ways to go about textbooks, yet I want to discuss why I don’t buy textbooks before the semester begins because frankly I have learned..it can be easier to wait because one; you don’t know if you will drop/add a class before the time is up for you to do so, you sometimes don’t even know what textbooks are for your classes because professors don’t always give that information to your campuses bookstore or you don’t even a text book since all the materials are given to you through the professor (i.e. Blackboard, powerpoints, print offs, buying a code for an online book, etc.), your professors will tell you what book to buy when given the syllabus and/or in email, and sometimes you don’t even need said textbook even if it is at your campus bookstore. 

So let’s get into it. 

Why buying textbooks before the semester can be difficult

Obviously this does not happen to everyone, nor every major or course; however, a lot of courses aren’t always assigned a professor until the semester is beginning, or the professor(s) provide you with the source material, or your textbook is listed but you don’t need it, or you have to buy an online code that is good for only half of the semester (180 days give or take), or you have to get software for certain courses that isn’t provided to you by the campus bookstore..so buying textbooks is difficult in that sense. Usually if that happens, I just wait until the beginning of the semester or close to it and then buy my books. To make it worse, from fall semester of freshmen year..books on backorder make it so much harder to get books on time. I had find a book off eBay to use for my history course because the bookstore did not carry the right edition my professor wanted. So it makes difficult when you have all that. 

New, used, and rented textbooks

I always see a lot on here about how you should buy used textbooks because it is cheaper and it is extremely cheaper; however, used textbooks are bought faster then new ones for that price. So sometimes you are ultimately left with buying new textbooks and sadly, you have to buy a new textbook for some of your courses. Especially courses that require you to get textbook codes for online homework and labs, because if you buy the code seperate..that can cost you anywhere from $80 to over $100 USD for an online code that you can get with a brand new textbook. So while you are getting a cheaper used textbook..you are still going to end up paying the same cost as a new textbook or more for an online code that you can get with the new textbook. This may be different for other countries and certain courses, yet that’s what I’ve experienced. Then you have renting..I don’t normally rent textbooks because either a lot of my courses have loose leaf textbooks that you aren’t able to rent, the rented textbooks aren’t really taken care of, have return dates that can be time constricting, and you can’t always rent them either because they go fast too due to being cheap. And you can’t write in them for notes. I like being able to write in my textbooks for notes, especially if it’s my business course textbooks because I can highlight, make notes, and know what I have to read and key points in them. 

Online Material (either included or separate with textbooks)

Through my university we can order our textbooks through our campuses Barnes and Nobles and then if you are in the Law school or Health Sciences area you have your own bookstore for those books and materials, and since my English class is one of my three online courses this semester, I have to get three textbooks. One that I already have from English 101, a new work book I need for this course, and an online learning book (?). As I stated above, a lot of online material you need to get only last 180 days..the length of the semester give or take and because of that..I don’t want to get it until I have to because otherwise I will use up the 180 days before the semester begins. This even goes for language courses too and any other course that requires online material to help with the class. If you can get that online material with the new textbook, it saves you money but if you have to buy online material for some reason to go along with your textbooks that your professor assigned you will have to pay some amount for it. 

Other course material 

Again, you truly never know what you fully need for your courses until you get closer to the semester begins. Usually it can be leading up to it by a few weeks or literally 24-73 hours before the first day of classes begins. Happened to me this past spring semester. Depending on what your college/universities policies are and professors/departments policies for releasing syllabus information before the courses begin, you may get information you need on those courses sooner than the semester begins so you can get what you need..although because of drop/ass class dates to change your schedule you may want to wait to get those materials because you may drop that course before fully getting into it. These course materials can always range from scantron sheets (my university does not provide those for free btw), to flashcards, to again online material, calculators..whatever you can think of related to said course and major you are in. Like for me, in music, I have to get a lock for a locker rental in our Creative Arts building and buy an extra portable foldable stand to keep in locker because we are now required to have our stands (I have a stand but I’m keeping that on in my dorm room, my floor is going to hate me). That is not including whatever else I need.

I just wanted to share mine for others incase they’ve experienced this and know it’s better to get things leading up to classes starting. I know with COVID it’s really difficult right now with getting ready for this upcoming academic year, let alone getting materials you need.

Why we should stop straight-washing Euryalus and Nisus

Hello everyone! For my first post on this blog I am going to write about a matter that I hold dear: Euryalus and Nisus, the two Trojan warriors whose undertaking can be found in the ninth book of Virgil's Aeneid. I was looking forward to studying this episode in class, but then my teacher came up with a sentence that I really didn't like: «Please do not consider Euryalus and Nisus as a couple, they are just very good friends». If there is one thing I cannot stand, it's when teachers do not tell the class how things really are just because they dislike something about it. By doing so, they are spreading misinformation, and I think that's something that shouldn't happen in schools. Anyway, I don't want to argue about teachers' job (or lack of it), but I want to show you why we really need to stop straight-washing Euryalus and Nisus.

So, first of all, a bit of background

-Trojans and Latins are now alleys. The king Latinus, who had previously promised his daughter to Turnus, prince of Ardea and of the Rutulians, changed his mind and offered Lavinia, such was the girl's name, to Aeneas in marriage. -At this sight, Juno, who happens to be the goddess of marriage and queen of the gods, sends down her agent Alecto, one of the three Furies, the one that never rests, to prevent the Trojans from having their way with king Latinus by marriage and cause their downfall through war. -For doing so, Alecto takes over the body of the queen Amata, whom she persuades to oppose Aeneas' marriage and whips Turnus to go on war against the Trojans. She then causes a skirmish between the local people of  Latium and a Trojan hunting party led by Ascanius, who kills a white deer. [Casus belli, the event that provokes or is used to justify a war] -War has begun. In the ninth book, Aeneas is in Pallanteum, where lives and reign Evander, an old king now Aeneas' alley. Taking advantage of Aeneas' absence, Turnus attacks the Trojan camp. In accordance to Aeneas' strict instructions, the Trojans close the gates and decline battle. [This is topic structure in epic poetry: the situation always gets worse when the hero is far from the battle field. For example, in the Iliad this happens with both Achilles and Odysseus.] -Euryalus and Nisus are two Trojans warriors who are at the gates. Nisus starts thinking about a night foray...

But let's talk about who Euryalus and Nisus are before we actually get to the story. We can get a first glimpse of them in the fifth book, during the funeral games of Anchises, where Virgil refers to their love as amour pius, a love that shows the pietas which is Aeneas' main trait, but the events that involve them are in the ninth book. -Nisus is the son of Hyrtacus -therefore of noble origins- and is described as a formidable warrior, especially with spear and bow and arrow. He had been sent by Ida, the hunters' mountains, to be comrade of Aeneas, given his amazing skills. When going to the Trojan army, Nisus brought his own comrade, Euryalus, whom he holds really dear. -Euryalus is so young he hasn't had his first beard yet. He is described as the most beautiful man in Aeneas' army. He does not have any experience about war but is determined to fight because he wants to achieve the so-called pulchram mortem, which literally means good, beautiful death and refers to a death that occurs while fighting, one that brings honour upon the dead warrior himself.

They are both very loyal towards each other, but for different reasons, plus they show it in different ways. Nisus cares about Euryalus because the younger boy needs to be protected and guided on his path to adulthood; he shows it when he tries to convince Euryalus not to follow him on the night foray to the enemy camp. On the other hand, Euryalus holds Nisus dear because he sees the man as a life model, someone to look up to; he follows him when he's called to be part of Aeneas' men. 

His amour unus est. They were one in love. That's the very first thing that we learn of Euryalus and Nisus as a couple. Virgil here portraits the Greek model of love between two men, with the typical structure of the erastes (literally “the one that loves”, active, in this case Nisus) and the eromenos (passive, in this case Euryalus). In Roman military, homosexual behaviour among fellow soldiers was strictly prohibited because there was a lot of cultural baggage about it. The Romans had peculiars views upon what makes a free citizen free, and in these views political freedom was tightly linked to physical one, and of course a free citizen wasn't object to sexual use, because taking part passively to a sexual encounter would mean lose freedom. A Roman man was, however, free to engage in  same sex relationships with a passive partner (slaves, prostitutes, etc) excluded form the protections of citizenship. In this case, however, Euryalus and Nisus are on the same level. Neither of them is a slave nor a prostitute. They appear exactly as a pair of Greek lovers would've. Among the Greek there was indeed a ancient tradition of idealized homosexuality in military setting -The sacred band of Thebes, Achilles and Patroclus... Virgil, by describing their love as pius, makes it honourable and in line with Roman values. Because they are soldiers, their love can be seen especially when they charge together into battle (and that's the second thing Virgil tells us about them).

Now we are ready to get back to the story. Euryalus and Nisus are sharing their guard duty on the gate, when Nisus starts talking about a night foray to the Rutulians' camp; he says that he cannot be quiet any more, but wants to rush into battle or into some great enterprise, so he starts to make up a plan. Euryalus, just like him, is enthusiastic but when he understands that Nisus does not intend to bring him on the mission, he immediately says that he does not intend to abandon him. “I have here a hearth that despises the light, that would gladly spend life to buy the honour you are striving for”. Nisus replies that he wants Euryalus to live because, if he won't come back from the foray, the young man can give him a proper burial and avenge him. Plus, he doesn't want Euryalus' mother (whose love towards her son was so great that she was the only woman among the Trojans who did not stop in Sicily) to suffer. But Euryalus clears that he's determined to follow the other, so Nisus allows him to take the crucial decision. Before they leave, Euryalus wakes sentries to keep guard when they go to the Council to expose their plan. The Council is a gathering of chosen Trojan warriors. The original plan, Nisus' one, was to take a message to Aeneas, but now the two propose to set an ambush, kill as many enemies as they can and then come back before dawn. Aletes, a very old man “mature in judgement” approves it, and so does Ascanius (Aeneas' son), who promises every kind of rewards, Turnus' horse included. They set out, enter the Rutulian camp and slaughter the soldiers while they sleep. Nisus eventually realizes that day is due to come, so he looks for Euryalus, who puts on armour he had stolen form the dead (medallions, a gold-studded belt and a helmet with gorgeous plumes). This will be their downfall: 300 soldiers, led by Volcens, spot them because the helmet Euryalus is wearing reflects into the moonlight. They immediately start running, trying to escape through a dense forest nearby. Euryalus is slower than Nisus because he's carrying all the loot, which slows him down; so Nisus actually gets further. For a moment, only for a moment, he forgets about Euryalus. For Nisus what matters the most is not the mission but the boy himself, so he heads back. He can hear the enemy, and he has a vision: Euryalus surrounded by the Rutulians with no defence. He asks himself what he can do to help him, so he attacks the enemies. Nisus, indeed, is still in the wood, so when he starts to throw spears upon the Rutulians, they can't understand from where those spears come from. Volcens gets angry and decides to punish Euryalus, whom is his captive. Nisus now, and only now, is described as distraught; the only thing he cares about is saving Euryalus, so he steps out and declare himself as the man who killed all those Rutulians. But Volcens puts Euryalus to the sword. Nisus now starts going mad, the pain is too much and he cannot handle it. All he wants now is to avenge his comrade, so he tries to kill Volcens, but he ends up surrounded by enemies and gets killed shortly after Euryalus dies. The following day, the Rutulians have Euryalus and Nisus' heads on two spikes, showing no mercy and no pietas. The Trojans watch afflicted this lugubrious procession. Euryalus' mother gets to know about her son's death and starts mourning him in the typical way: she pulls her own hair, she hits herself and cries and weeps loudly.

Virgil here wants to offer his audience an occasion to think about war, love and death. He acknowledges the fact that many deaths occurred while Rome was becoming the powerful city it was when he was writing, but he still wants underline the fact that there is no joy when a war is raging on, not even for the winners: Volcens will die as well.

So, although Euryalus and Nisus are kind of a negative example – they neglect the disciplines and show no respect to the gods-, Virgil wants the audience to focus on the fact that their love was the thing they most valued. Virgil indeed was a follower of the Epicurean philosophy, that celebrates close relationships privately, exalting the feeling itself, one that is based on fides, affection and respect.

“No day shall erase you from the memory of time”.
