i’m not sure if i should include everyone or what they’d be…

i’d still say i’m fairly new to comics (longer under the cut)

i’ve only been in to dc for about 2 years and have only read the current batman run as far back as the joker war! most of my reading is from anecdotal mini runs, or just seeking out my favorite characters and hopping around from different runs to skim a book or two, and reading what i can find in spanish in physical form.

my knowledge of some of these characters and their personality is limited to none (still learning.) they may not be included in some aus art or writings i make because i don’t know enough about them to know their personalities or what i think “fits” yet

mostly because DC fans have been pretty unforgiving when it comes to batman’s extended universe 😅 asking about their relations to bruce have given answers like “go read a comic” (which is fair) to more harsher things, being called stupid, racist, misogynistic, the r-slur, etc and accused “erasing” character history/family by asking if they are bruce’s family or kids . if i explain i don’t have that knowledge, i’ve even been told i just shouldn’t talk about them if i don’t know anything about them.

i’m sorry if your favorite character doenst get drawn, or is drawn as an animal you don’t like. you are welcome to say what you think they’d be or make your own drawings, i’d be happy to see it! i just don’t have the energy for people to fight with me or each other about what they think is right or wrong. i do this all for fun in what little free time i have 😭

after the night at the byer’s, billy and steve both sport the same bruises.

and it doesn’t make sense.

steve’s sure he didn’t get that many hits in, and even then, it wasn’t hard enough to give billy a shiner like his.

and the worst part is, he feels bad.

“Hey, man,” He starts, cornering billy after a particularly difficult basketball practice. billy was awful. he kept his shirt on, too, which was weird. steve was benched completely; he can barely see out of one eye, and the other is still swollen shut.

billy’s panting from practice, hunched over as if it hurts to breathe. facing his locker and not replying to steve.

“um,” steve continues. “i…feel bad about what happened this weekend. i was just looking out for the kids, y’know, and i didn’t mean to hit you that h-“

billy turns around, snarling. looking like a battered, cornered wild dog.

“oh fuck right off, harrington,” he spits, and shoulders his way out.

“dude,” steve says, curling his lip. “i’m trying to apologize to you, asshole.”

“i don’t need your apology,” billy replies, and it hurts a little.

“well maybe if you hadn’t been a racist asshole i wouldn’t have had to hit you in the first plac-“

billy seems even angrier.

“i am not a fucking racist, harrington,” he snarls, but it lacks the horror his voice used to hold because of the wounds on his face.

steve grimaces. “yeah, totally, you just attacked lucas because he happened to be the closest.”

billy looks around the locker room as if someone is watching him. nervous.

“it’s not because of that,” he mutters, chewing on his swollen bottom lip.

“then why?” steve presses. “because if i recall, he didn’t do a damn thing to you, billy.”

billy swallows and refuses to make eye contact.

“it’s my fucking dad, harrington. he finds out max is messing around with a black kid and all three of us get a shiner worse than mine. i couldn’t care less about what those little shits are doing, but he does.”

steve’s face softens.

“so you’re…taking the punches for max?”

“that’s a stupid way to put it.”

“i…” steve gapes. “why don’t you go to hopper or something? he could put your dad in j-“

“because, harrington, i’ve got nowhere to go and no one gives a shit anyway if a dad beats his son as discipline. but i can’t let him put a hand on max. she doesn’t deserve it. even if she’s a fucking bitch.”

billy shakes his head like he’s said something awful.

“now you know. congratulations, harrington. i spent all this time stealing your crown and now you know that i’m just a pussy whose dad beats him. have fun spreading that one around.”

billy turns to leave and steve catches him by the arm.

“i’m not going to tell anyone,” he says, and billy scoffs.

“i promise. i’m not like that anymore. like you said…turned bitch.”

billy laughs.

“so, what? you look at me like i’m a kicked puppy every time i come to school with my teeth knocked in? because i’d rather you spread rumors about me instead.”

steve shakes his head.

“i wont do that either. promise. i just…i dunno. can i help in any way?”

billy shrugs him off.

“do what you do, i guess. protect those little shits. i’m not as good with kids as you are, mama bird.”

steve flushed at that and grimaces.

“please do not ever call me that again.”

and they laugh. and it feels nice.

“hey, uh, are you doing anything this friday?” steve asks, and it feels natural.

“probably looking after max. parents like to go out a lot and leave me with her.”

“well, why don’t you and her come with me and we can catch a movie maybe? she can bring lucas and you two can patch things up?”

“are you asking me on a date, harrington?”

steve’s face gets even redder.

“no, i just meant-like y’know, it would be nice, and i could, um-“

“it’s cool. i’ll come by friday. 5:00? you get lucas, i’ll bring max.”

steve nods. “um, yeah. that sounds good.”

billy smiles softly. “good. and don’t pick some girly movie. max and i like slashers.”

“right. got it.”

“see ya, steve.”

billy nudges him before jogging off, undoubtably late to pick up max.

and steve is frozen. what started as an apology for his own moral compass turned into a date. steve’s going on a date? with a boy? no, it was just a joke. maybe. probably.

You asked about wizarding fashion which is something that lives rent free in my mind at all times so pls excuse the wordvomit

I always imagined it as a very mixed thing. Muggleborns would keep up at least a little with modern muggle fashion for whenever they are visiting family etc so there are probably (muggleborn) tailors who incorporate necklines, sleeves/shoulders/silhouettes that match current or recent muggle fashion. I can imagine these being popular with halfbloods too.

For more .. conservative (racist) wizards and witches it is possible that fashion developed completely seperately from muggle influences. Or even as a direct opposite of muggle influences. They could have seen a new trend come up with muggleborns and decide they want the exact opposite.

I do imagine that some purebloods would dress in clothing more like the boring robes, but that fabrics and embroidery etc could spice it up (moving embroidered birds etc). It's also possible that they have very different ideas on what silhouettes are desirable and they might use boning/petticoats/crinoline/shoulderpads/etc mixed with magic to achieve shapes muggles would never be able to achieve.

Another route is going completely magic oriented and then I imagine Iris van Herpen type styles with movement and floating bits etc

Oddly enough, I never considered embroidery that’s, like, enchanted to move. There are so many things magic could do with clothing. This idea reminds me a bit of the rejected concept of Elsa’s live fur coat in Frozen.

This is making me realize how uncreative I’ve been thinking about wizard robes—and ALSO. So many missed opportunities in the HP films to really play with this concept.

Also, also. Hogwarts robes are, to me, definitely the Sword in the Stone type. Very much NOT cute. There’s an ancient post about this that I could probably dig up, but if you know Tealin’s art from the early 2000s, that’s what I think the Hogwarts uniform probably looks like, at least in canon.

There's a few that think Usopp is a pet, mostly out of touch celestial dragons and nobles who don't know how the world works. The majority of the work know selkies are a race of People, just inferior people. When they talk about Usopp's and Luffy's relationship they talk about how Luffy won Usopp, took him away and Usopp was daft enough to fall in love with a pirate because if selkies were smart why weren't they running the world? Its also interpreted a little like Usopp just being a thing to show off and few really believes the relationship is serious - just Luffy messing around with the poor weak selkie until he found a nice human woman to have human children with or whatever. Usopp understands the world won't understand them just like the world will never understand Luffy. Luffy finds the whole thing bizzare because he knows about racism but the stuff in the papers isn't people directly saying they're racist so Luffy vaguely understands it as the media somehow thinking Usopp is either a full seal or a kid - and that's wrong and stupid so he ignores it. If anything outright bothers Usopp he knows he has to outright tell Luffy because Luffy's good at knowing Something is wrong, not at knowing What.

Not really, everyone has wings and yeah budgies are one of the more domestic birds but that doesn't give Usopp any more gossip about being subservient to the pirate king than Nami and Robin get for being women and having a male captain. There is a crackpot theory based on an old wives' tale about how bat-winged people can hypnotize people and Luffy's hypnotized entire countries into saying he's a good person and also hypnotized his crew into brain dead zombies but it's only believed in particularly boring towns where pirate gossip is the only thing to talk about.

Totk/SwS timeline ideas and headcanons (spoilers)

Post Skyward Sword by several generations— Zelda has to have a child by birth (not necessarily with Link) and those kids go on to become priestesses of Hylia. Sonia and SwS Zelda's were never alive at the same time.

SwS Zelda isn't crowned queen when she moves to the Surface (not yet called Hyrule), and tbh her character would hate that title. She takes on a priestess role that's basically the wing ceremony thing she did but more intense

This is backed by the ancient Hyrulean stelae calling Sonia a priestess by birth before she became queen

Demise's curse isn't necessary tied to Link himself, but those who share the blood of the goddess and the spirit of the hero, thereby cursing Link and Zelda's successors separately. Since Wind Waker shows the spirit of the hero isn't always passed on by blood, he and Zelda don't have to be the ones to have kids but Zelda does have to have a blood related child for her end of the curse.

Rauru has the spirit of the hero—he just doesn't have the Master Sword. He sees Zelda has the broken one and she talks about her hero in the future so much that they don't think that if Demise's hatred is manifesting to Sonia's blood of the goddess there should also be a hero, and just. Never go looking for it.

The Zonai thrived in the sky once the Skyloft Hylians had totally moved to the Surface — they know about Hylia and worship her because they found the remains of Skyloft, so that's why Rauru chooses to name the kingdom he creates Hyrule instead of after a Zonai deity (also because his wife is a priestess with Hylia's blood)

Sonia's Zonai secret stone is made from a piece of Zelda's crystal. The Zonai found it (she brought a shard back to Skyloft for sentimental reasons) and found it was imbued with magic they didn't understand (Zelda never knew about it, it was just an echo of her own power) but eventually learned how to harness it's power. The amber slowed time down so she didn't age in the crystal, and the Zonai figured out how to go a step further and recount the memories of objects

Hyrulean—language, people of the kingdom. Hylian— culture and/or race*. Skyloft is Hylian but not Hyrulean. Rauru is Hyrulean but not Hylian. The Sheikah aren't a subset of Hylian despite what totk says because that's a racist retcon. Sheikah, Gerudo, Zora, Rito, all of the above are Hyrulean because they agree to join Rauru. *race in Zelda is fucked up so I'm approaching this like studying the ancient Mediterranean which did not have the modern concept of race/racism but rather cultural ties. That comes with it's own downfalls and problems but I think the best way to look at this fantasy world is not in terms of modern race but in fake cultures and peoples—however, outside of the story on a meta level, modern racism and bias is extremely prevalent and can't be brushed aside

The Zora evolving into the Rito for Wind Waker was always stupid (why would fish become birds when the world floods) so we're completely ignoring that

A couple of days ago that dickolas account that made that one book popular got outed as being a huge racist in the mxtx fandom, but some people felt the need to treat the fact that a couple of accounts they follow are proship-adjacent as if that mattered.

i'd like to personally thank you, small uncanny bird on my windowsill that i picture as having the glassy-eyed apocalypse stare of a crudely reanimated taxidermy, for sending my entire friend group down the stupidest of rabbit holes this evening. never have i wasted so much precious time reading something so unworthy of it. (this is not blaming you, just how incredibly stupid the callout was.)

just to have something to show for the time i wasted, i do have to laugh at your qualification of "huge racist", bc getting to the screenshots of the alleged behavior at the end of what i can only describe as an fbi investigation mounted by a single unmedicated human being was like finding out said fbi investigation was for catching a shoplifter. those screenshots were maybe a little cringe at best. i'm about to file a lawsuit against OP for damages incurred to my quality of life for that disappointment

Nooooo not Neelix in the bathtub! No, Voyager, no!  Notice how often Tuvok ends up with Neelix.  Maybe Janeway has it out for him.  And here I thought only the captain had a bathtub, huh. Do the others take baths? I can see Harry with a rubber duck.

Tuvok says "No uniform for you, Neelix, just the criminals get that.  Find an ugly couch."

Scene 19 The Bad Hair Aliens

Away team lands on a lovely desert planet and meets the Kazon.  The Kazon found out how to use technology like spaceships but are stumped on the whole water thing.  Like could you maybe find water on another planet that is fit to live on?  You think?

Kazon: The bad hair villains

As you can see, Neelix is popular with all.

Kes shows up beaten up.  Neelix shoots a phaser.  He’s competent with firing except oh he nearly got the away team (including the captain) killed by lying to them, but no matter. The Kazon are overcome in minutes when one of their big jugs of water is shot at, and go dashing off like cartoon chickens.

Scene 21 He who shall one day take over Voyager

(Sickbay)Tuvok: Gee, Neelix if you’d told us you wanted to rescue Kes that might have helped us.  Neelix: Don’t be stupid Tuvok!  Then the holographic new Doc says:

He gets some of the best lines cause his actor adlibs a lot.

Scene 22 Pixie leaves shade

(in Ocampaville): Go, Kes, give that boss man hell!  I did not remember her being so feisty.  Why did she put up with jealous controlling Neelix?

Scene 23 Poor Harry

Harry and B"Elanna still trying to escape. They have nicknames for each other ("Starfleet" and "Maquis") that they still occasionally use later. (Continuity?)

Scene 24 Movin' on up, to the top

Janeway, Tuvox, and Chakotay are in Ocampaville and - are they riding an escalator? 

Janeway: Okay boys, remember we are buying you pants today!

The array is acting wonky, Tuvok’s like "Oh, hey I think the Caretaker dude is dying." and Janeway’s like "How do we get home then?"  Ah don’t worry about it.

It's definitely an escalator. When did they get to Sears?

Scene 25 OSHA compliant tunnels

(Underground Ocampaville) It's nice that the tunnels have stairs with handrails. For safety. Tom says Harry is his only friend and Harry’s like I am? Their friendship will become one of most endearing relationships on the show. No sarcasm for once.

Harry's response: I'm you're friend? That's right Harry, Tom said so.

Scene 26 Command Team goes shopping

Back at the mall, Janeway and others figure out the transporter isn’t working again because psychobabble.

You can't convince me this wasn't filmed at a mall. Janeway: I said, no stopping for snacks, Tuvok! Keep up!

Scene 27 Tom to the Rescue

(Under Ocampaville)  In case of Earthquake, take stairs.  Tom has a really big flashlight.  Starting a landslide gets you out this time.  Tom reaches the top - yay I made it up to hell.  Big boom.  Janeway and the others are still in the tunnels (they got out of the mall) so they are in trouble so Tom’s like "I might as well rescue them. Maybe I’ll get to fly the ship!"

Scene 28 Really, Really Sorry Native Americans

(Under Ocampavile).  Chakotay’s leg is broken, but Tom rescues him from the stairs. Tom says Chakotay’s an Indian so he owes him a life debt for saving him and then asks Chakotay if he can do Indian tricks and turn into a bird fly and them out of there and I am not making this up. I am just SO SORRY Native Americans, wtf?

Remember back when Tom was really, really racist?

Scene 29 Meanwhile back on the heavily torn up ship . . .

(Back on Voyager)

Oh, hey, the ship cleaned up nice really fast! Must be the space fairies.

Red alert! They need to go back to array thingy - wait, where am I?  Jabin of bad hair says array thingy his.  Chakotay goes to hold off the Kazon on his tiny ship.  Janeway tells Tom to take the helm cause he’s been good for a day or two so you know.

Even Tom is like "Wait, seriously?"

Scene 30 No More Banjos

(On array) Janeway hears a banjo and is like "Jam it!"  Caretaker says he’s been bringing entire ships to the delta quadrant to find a compatible mate (not making this up) and the people get sick because they are not compatible maters. 

Question for the Caretaker: Like ever think of just finding them a better planet away from the Kazon and stocking it up and stuff?  Wouldn’t that be easier?

Caretaker feels guilty because oops he messed up the Ocampan's atmosphere with his tech so he decides to take care of every need the Ocampans have because they are “like children” (ick?) and according to him have the brains of goldfish.

Scene 31 Always think ahead, Chakotay

(Voyager) - The Kazon are dumb but they do know how to make the weapons on their ship work.  A Starfleet guy falls and takes a bite of railing with his teeth.  Ow.  They don’t have enough firepower so Chakotay says "Eh I’ll ram my ship into them and think about where to live later."  And Tom reminds him he still owes him.  Again. Chakotay beams out before boom.

I guess Chakotay was counting on Janeway keeping them on Voyager cause otherwise this would have been a very dumb idea.

Scene 32 Anyone up for Jello?

Tuvok says" Hey Cap, we can get back to Federation space." and he just knows Janeway is not going to listen.  I bet Tuvok would have taken everyone back.  The Kazon will kill all of the Ocampa if they leave more tech for them to screw up but won't the Ocampans have to come out sometime and who will protect them then and you know, nevermind.  The Caretaker becomes a jello mold, and then a rock. 

Maybe the Caretaker should have concentrated on jello mold like creatures for mates.

Scene 33 Wouldn't you like to see this out your window?

Janeway decides to destroy the array.  The only one with enough energy to protest is B'Elanna.  Chakotay is like "Whatevs" because he blew up his own ship and wants a place to live.

I’m just thinking the guys on the lower decks have to be wondering, "Huh, what’s that array and why’d it explode?  Wonder when we’re getting home.  Wait, what?"

Scene 34 I Miss Molly

(Janeway’s ready room.) There is a pic of Mark and Molly the dog and her on her computer.  Heck with Mark, she’s abandoned her DOG people!  She tells Tuvok she’ll get them home because she’s starting to wonder about that decision to strand everyone without their knowledge.  That won’t cause her any guilt later.

New canon from my daughter - Mark is a secret agent hence his basic name. Someone needs to run with this on a fanfic.

Scene 35 You know how you quit Starfleet for a cause? Too bad.

Janeway tells Tom she asked the Maquis to join them instead of trying to fit them into their cells for 75 years.  How did that many Maquis get on one tiny ship? 

Chakotay's ship compared to Voyager. And there were like thirty of them on there at least? I think?

Janeway makes Tom a Lt. and ship pilot which is totally fair even though she’s just promoted him over Harry and wtf doesn’t Tom have a record? Should there be a trial run maybe? 

They mention Chakotay’s life belongs to Tom again.  Also Chakotay is now first officer in order to promote the Brady bunch theme of togetherness.  Chakotay is a good fit because he has experience and he didn't get kicked out of Starfleet. He just chose to leave because he hates them all. Chakotay and Janeway will totally be the parents of this ship.

This HAS to be a major theme in upcoming episodes.

Scene 36 Can we come too?

Neelix and Kes want to be part of crew.  Neelix is lucky he’s got his handler Kes or this would never work.

Scene 37 Janeway gives speech - Ayala!

Janeway gives a speech about how it might look like they're screwed, but they've totally got this. 

Ayala spotting!  There he is by Harry! 

Also they are a Starfleet crew cause Janeway says so. And wow, she’s somehow gotten every Maquis into Starfleet uniform ALREADY because conformity solves everything.  No need for them to ease into this or something. 

Chakotay "Yay I am so happy weeee."

And we have a pilot!

i'm sorry that you're having such a bad time wrt another tumblr book club :(

I was going to put on a tough face, but actually I'm really not handling it well at all. I keep having violent panics in between dissociative fits.

But more than anything, I'm so fucking mad at myself for having allowed myself the foolishness of vulnerability. For the audacious imbecility of hope.

Because I knew this was coming.

Sherlock Holmes attracts only the worst kind of Literary Intellectual (TM). But I still hoped.

And when I saw that post this morning, do you know what I thought actually? "Oh, finally! I've been waiting for someone to bring it up. It seemed overdue. I'm glad we're going to talk about it now!"

That's why I dared to bare my dumb stupid fucking soul like that, like a moron. Like an idiot. To fucking show my weak spot and say, "go ahead, goyim, here's the target!"

Because I really thought the fandom was going to talk about it.

I trusted us.

Them.

I thought about them as an us that could be trusted to talk to as peers about a difficult subject.

You know. The way the Dracula Daily fandom talked about the anti-Romani bigotry, phrenology, xenophobia.

The way the 80 days fandom talked about the various forms of racist and colonialist messaging pervasive throughout.

The way the Whale Weekly fandom continues to talk about. Ooof. Allll of that.

I thought we were going to talk.

In the way that had been established as the norm for these books.

But instead, just. Just an avalanche of some of the most obscene shit. A lot of it gleefully posted in public, masks fully off.

People calling jews too stupid too read. Calling us censors. Saying we're attacking and harassing gentiles by acknowledging that the fucking source material is antisemitic, a fact the goddamned gentiles themselves also openly acknowledge.

But we're hurt by it. And we're expressing that pain. So I guess that makes us the villains.

You know, Shakespeare wrote plenty of antisemitic stereotypes himself, but uh. He had this tendency to, see, also make his characters very fully realized and give them elegantly spoken motivations. So elegant, in fact, that many people forget the first lines are ours.

I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions; fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, heal'd by the same means, warm'd and cool'd by the same winter and summer, as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, do we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that.

Oh, but I forget my place in the hierarchy of this noble English Literary Canon.
