Everybody Is Dead...!

In the Metal Fight Beyblade verse, Rago is capable via Diablo Nemesis of absorbing the power of his opponent and gaining their abilities. He can also gain the abilities and power of everyone that opponent has fought from the beginning to the present.

Despite this, Pluto states that Nemesis has the power of every bey in the world by the time he and Rago do battle with the Legendary Bladers and company. It opens the door to a potential trickle down effect that would go on and on. It makes Rago's main ability one of the most horrifying in any verse.

This got me thinking about another potential trickle down that could be applied to another overpowered deity. This one being of light rather than destruction. Galeem. Due to the incredible amount of crossovers and cameos that can be traced via some path to someone within the Super Smash Bros verse, there's a disturbing amount of verses that are almost certainly reduced to non-existence alongside everyone that ever existed within that verse by the Lord of Light and it's "Everybody Is Dead" attack. That isn't counting restoring the verses back into existence and shuffling them while everyone in them become mindless slaves. Even the verses with stages, Mii outfits and music have potential to be completely screwed. A scenario like this would represent the absolute highest limit of Galeem's power...

Every Record I Own - Day 768: Lungfish Rainbows From Atoms

I tend to view Lungfish as having three stages in their discography (well, four if you count their debut Necklace of Heads, which always felt like an outlier in their catalog). The first stage encompasses the albums with John Chriest on bass---Talking Songs For Walking, Rainbows From Atoms, and Pass & Stow. This era of the band still bears a strong sonic connection to the DC post-hardcore sound, even though Lungfish toyed with the template from the get-go. But in this first era, they hadn't quite ascended to the strange and mystic power that became synonymous with the band.

But hints of that hypnotic, mantra-like power are already apparent on their third album, Rainbows From Atoms. First off, I'm a sucker for any album that opens with a one-or-two chord rocker like "Instrument" (see also: Constantines Tournament of Hearts, Rocket From The Crypt Scream Dracula Scream, Helms Alee Keep This Be the Way, etc), and the band's decision to kick off the record with a driving, minimalist anthem with cryptic riddle-laden lyrics would likely have been equal parts perplexing and invigorating if I'd initially picked up this record in 1993.

As I mentioned earlier, I was late to the Lungfish game, and taking in their entire discography over the course of months rather than years meant that some of the magic of watching the gradual development of the band was lost on me. But there's the latecomer advantage of taking in their output as a whole, as opposed to weighing each new release against their earlier works. Perhaps this is why Lungfish got less and less attention over the course of their active years while seemingly increasing in popularity after they slipped into an indefinite hiatus. In real time, their evolution was gradual, and it's reasonable to assume that feisty, angsty teenagers in the '90s got their fill of Lungfish's esoteric drone-rock after one or two records. But for folks like me, coming into a whole catalog of this stuff after the fact rendered their degree of tinkering with the formula moot. I could take in the trajectory of the band in one fell swoop instead of patiently waiting a decade-and-a-half to see where the road led.

And for me, Rainbows From Atoms is a snapshot of a band from the Dischord world taking further steps away from the post-hardcore trappings of the era. "Mother Made Me" shows the band exploring the druggy, hypnotic territories that would later be at the forefront of their sound. The song also captures a developing approach of their guitarist Asa Osborne, who would gradually eschew the big roaring power chords and palm-muted chugs heard elsewhere on the album in favor of arpeggiated chords, a style that reminds me of the Southern gothic-era of early R.E.M., as heard on albums like Fables of the Reconstruction.

You can also hear echoes of Annapolis neighbors Moss Icon on the cryptic spoken word ballad "Creation Story." And you can pick up on the influence of Fugazi's rhythm section savvy on songs like "Fresh Air Cure" and "Axiomatic." But the album highlights are ultimately the songs that sound like a band in the throes of self-discovery---tracks like "Abraham Lincoln" and "Seek Sound Shelter" where Lungfish lean into their singular magic-eye impulses.

In my experiences, Rainbows From Atoms isn't one of the more lauded albums in the Lungfish canon, likely because it straddles the line between their more bombastic origins and more meditative future. But the band were in a constant state of reevaluation and refinement, and taken in as a whole, Rainbows From Atoms remains and invigorating document of a band in a volatile state of creative calibration.

Ahh, Lara is currently very underdeveloped and in particular didn't get to encounter many factions, but I'll answer as many as I can!

🌱 Name's Lara, gender's a big question mark (they/them pronouns), and I don't think I settled on an exact age but I'd say early to mid 20s

👀 Lara had a female character model, they're white, IIRC build-wise they were pretty muscular (more so than Trin is, at least), and they had pink hair in the Unladylike style. I intended for them to cycle through different 'raidery' hairstyles and all of the rainbow dye colours, but didn't play for long enough to actually implement any changes. I do imagine them having various ear and facial piercings

👕 Well, in-game, they only ever wore the 76 jumpsuit. If I'd continued playing I'd probably have settled on the greaser jacket and jeans as a default outfit

⌚️ They either entered Vault 76 as a very young child or were one of the first children born inside. In either case, they don't remember anything about the outside world before the War

🏠 I don't think I ever put their CAMP down hgfdgh. On the off chance I did, I definitely didn't build anything. They did make it to the Overseer's CAMP and use some of the workbenches/stations there, though. Living out of someone else's pre-built CAMP with their own still strapped to their back is a peak Lara move, so let's canonise that

🏰 It hardly counts as a CAMP, but they ended up attempting to use a house in Sutton as a player home, and I headcanoned that it was their parents' house originally

🌎 How much they like/dislike any particular area is directly proportional to the difficulty of the enemies there

🧠 I don't recall any specific SPECIAL values except high Strength and medium to low Intelligence and Charisma. I do, however, recall taking a perk that only provided multiplayer bonuses when as far as I could tell, there weren't even any other players in the server during the entire 3-4 hour session I played as Lara

🔫 Melee anything!

📷 Here's the one photo I have! Judging by the surrounding scenery, I think this is right outside Vault 76. At one point I had a few blurry screenshots and even an Xbox video capture of them doing what they did best (running around Sutton absolutely helpless and getting owned by Scorched, that is...), but I believe Sibling J has since deleted those

☣️ Ah. Aha. Ahaha. Lara was absolutely petrified (pun intended) of the Scorched hanging around Sutton and the area nearby, and spent at least half of my entire playthrough time just trying to evade them for long enough to heal some HP and not die. Being the exclusive NV obsessee that I was at this time, I was probably trying to heal them with raw food and dirty water, so... yeah. RIP Lara every two minutes

☠️ The easiest way to summarise my intended character progression for Lara is that they emerged from the vault confused and terrified of the outside world and its many dangers, and started impersonating a tough, wasteland-savvy, raider-esque archetype in an attempt to scare away potential threats. Further in their storyline (which is very, very bare bones for now), they were supposed to actually get entangled in the Cutthroat gang

I remember you once said Harry has/had genuine sympathy for LGBTQ+ issues and injustices. Do you think he still does underneath all the celebrity? It’s just more he will always choose in favour of his own self-interest? I am someone who does believe he is not straight, but I agree that that doesn’t automatically make him a good person or someone who hasn’t used the LGBTQ+ community to his own advantage in ways that seem manipulative. Harry kind of feels like corporations and brands during pride month. When corporations and brands engage with pride month, it is manipulative as they are literally selling something or selling an image. Like those memes that say LGBTQ+ people don’t stop existing when pride month is over or showing shops packing away all the pride gear until next year. While Harry engages with a LGBTQ+ brand for more than a month and people obviously find comfort in his LGBTQ-friendly image, it kind of has that same feeling even though I do believe he is in the community. I guess that’s because Harry feels like a brand more than a person these days. I just wonder how that then translates into that genuine concern? Do you think it ever shows up again in his interactions with fans?

If you mean in Harry’s interactions with fans from the stage, that’s also part of his branding, isn’t it?

In his off time, I think of Harry Styles running INTO traffic, against a traffic light, so he could escape fans.

It’s funny, but corporations that advertise with rainbows during Pride Month are never stupid enough to say that Pride is about aesthetics, the way Harry did. Corporations know they don’t represent the community and cannot speak for it; they’re savvy enough to be quiet.

I don’t think Harry Styles-2022 has any genuine sympathy for anyone except himself and his friends, to be honest. He’s so out of touch with anything that doesn’t scream power and wealth. Sexuality is used as a marketing tool, like anything else. His contempt for ordinary people is pretty obvious. Everyone around him seems to have the same attitudes and values, as well. Birds of a feather and all that.
