Monetizing Accessibility
I wrote a review awhile ago for an app that I heavily relied on due to my dyslexia and TBI— Speechify. Its a text-to-speech reader that I can take photos of text books or signs and have them read to me. I used it plenty. You can take as many photos as you want, upload them, and have it read to you. Well..... thats what you used to be able to do. Then I updated the app and tah dah the main feature is behind a paywall!!! I can upload 3 files (photo/photoset) only! And if I want more I have to pay THIS fucking much:
Tumblr media
So I updated my app review from 5 stars to 1
Tumblr media
Then a long time later I got this email:
Tumblr media
"One time discount" on something that was fucking free. Its the most basic feature. There were plenty of additional features to pay for and ads prior. Now the ENTIER goddamn app, including the absolute most basic function, above 3 files is behind a $140 paywall. I don't want 90% of the features just keeping files like I could before. Its not even a one time fee; its a subscription. As if my TBI and dyslexia only lasts a year. Not to mention I already deleted my entire library.
I fucking hate how goddamn expensive being disabled it is. The email is an insult.

Realizing that Tumblr users can easily follow my posts, I'm considering how to engage users without accounts. I seek auto email subscription tools to encourage visitor interaction without mandatory sign-ups. Platforms like Medium and Substack offer such services, yet lack theme customization. On the flip side, Webflow, Wix, and Wordpress allow theme customization but lack email subscription options. There's a notable gap, and I believe Tumblr, with its focus on creativity, could bridge this.
Answer: Hi, @shahrishi!
As it happens, we, too, don’t dig anything that prevents non-logged-in people from seeing content on a network either—but it’s also true that requiring an account more often has helped Tumblr grow a fair bit in the last couple of years, so there’s a balance we’re trying to maintain. However, easing up that login wall is unlikely as things stand today. But we do have a suggestion. A loophole, if you will.
We would remind you that every blog on Tumblr has an RSS feed that’s free to use and doesn’t have any login wall—just add /rss to any blog URL, i.e., https://cyle.tumblr.com/rss.
We understand this is probably not exactly what you’re looking for, but maybe in the same direction. We hope it helps either way—and thank you for your question.

SiriusXM is the target of a lawsuit from the New York attorney general’s office accusing the satellite radio company of trapping customers in subscriptions and finding ways to prevent them from cancelling.
On Wednesday, New York AG Letitia James announced she’s suing SiriusXM after an investigation discovered that the company “forces its subscribers to call or chat online with an agent to cancel a subscription, then deliberately draws out those interactions as part of its strategy” to prevent subscribers from cancelling their packages.
In a press release, James said that a company’s difficult cancellation process is illegal. [...]

(As in, how many subscriptions do you have attached to your works? You should be able to find the number in your dashboard statistics section.)

Currently super nostalgic for the days where subscriptions weren’t really a thing online and you could use an endless amount of tools and websites for free with the occasional ad

Quit giving subscriptions your name. Just use initials....
I'll use myself as an example. (These are not made up, these are ones I received in my inbox today!!)
"Judy, what do you think?" - a writer's website I'm subscribed to.
"Judy, you might need a grammar intensive." - ANOTHER writer's website I'm subscribed to.
"Judy, did something catch you eye?" - A stationery/journal website I'm subscribed to.
"Judy, we need to talk." - A film critic website that probably doesn't even apply to me.
NEXT TIME, I'm signing all my stuff, "DARKLORD CHURRO" for just a little bit of anonymity.

I recently bought one of the 'support tumblr medal badges' and was surprised to learn that that didn't include ad-free browsing, as most other social media sites consider supporting their site synonymous with not seeing ads. Are there plans to combine these offerings in the future?
Answer: Hey there, @improbabledreams900.
We would love to say more here, but all we can say is that yes—we’re looking into it. 😉
Stay tuned to the usual channels, folks! There’ll be news here or at @changes—and sooner rather than later, hopefully.
Thanks for your question, and have a lovely day!

Maybe you beautiful people can help me. Since December my PayPal gets charged 6€ by Google. No where does it say what for. When I check my Google account the subscriptions are empty. I filed a complaint and they just said they couldn't find anything wrong. 6€ is not much but I still want to know what I'm paying for on a monthly basis.

Can't believe y'all are out here actually paying a monthly fee for a shitty music streaming service with a botched app. Could never be me. Mmh mmh mhh, I love owning my music and not paying for stuff I don't use. I love better financially supporting the artists I love. I love not worrying about my music being disabled if my card ever rejects a purchase. I love quickly streaming music I don't wanna own or download for free on YouTube.

Publishers still find it challenging to measure readers bypassing their paywalls
Tumblr media
by Sara Guaglione
Publishers began closing loopholes that allowed people to bypass their paywalls with fervor back in 2019, but it’s still a challenge for publishers to measure and block people who are finding those gaps.
A local publishing exec, who requested anonymity to speak freely, said the percentage of their readers bypassing their paywall is “low,” but it wasn’t “a reliable number.”
“We’ve never had really good data about that,” said Michael Silberman, svp of strategy at paywall platform Piano. [Editor’s note: Piano is a contracted vendor with Digiday.]
Publishers can see if anonymous users (those not subscribed or registered) are reading premium content or reading more pages than a metered paywall allows, said Arvid Tchivzhel, managing director at Mather Economics’ digital consulting practice. He estimates about 4-5% of readers are doing this.
But Matt Boggie, chief technology and product officer at The Philadelphia Inquirer, called it an “imprecise” calculation. This is primarily due to the different tactics people use to circumvent paywalls — from ad blockers to web crawlers.
