Patting Zoya Akhtar's back for casting a dark-skinned actress to play the rich, desirable, popular mean girl in The Archies (2023) when a light skinned Khushi Kapoor was available to play that role but instead did not.

The Archies - my two cents
just finished watching The Archies and i understand that it's not a perfect film. To be honest suhana was very stiff and not at all charming and Khushi certainly could've been better. Agastya as Archie was a mistake because he just doesn't give that main character energy but honestly to write off the entire movie as horrible is just not right. It was a very warm coming of age film with tender moments that made me realise how far we've come in terms of cinema because the "bad boy" instead of bullying the queer kid, not only stands up for him but also respectfully tells him that even though he might not reciprocate his feelings, he will always be there for him. this one instance alone made me feel so comforted for some reason. and then betty and veronica showing up at Archie's house and calling him out and just ultimately deciding that a boy is not worth fighting over? the song where they essentially teach Archie (and the audience) the importance of politics in an upbeat song that could pass off as a jingle? I liked this movie for the sheer audacity of making a film that doesn't take itself too seriously all the while handling sensitive and political issues with as much seriousness as they deserve. don't even get me started on the cinematography, the color palette and just the visual experience of watching such a stunningly shot film. it's not perfect but it was definitely a great experience to see such a film coming from Indian cinema. thank you for coming to my ted talk!
