Oscar is HOME!!! This precious little muffin arrived home from UC Davis yesterday after several weeks in the hospital to have a large amount of cloacal stones removed. He’s still not out of the woods yet as he needs to pass all the feces that was backed up in his GI tract due to the stone obstruction, but they sent him home because there wasn’t anything they were doing in the hospital that we couldn’t do here at home. They are concerned his intestines could rupture if he can’t get the fecal material out on his own, but surgery is even riskier so this is the best plan. At home he’s getting antibiotic injections, fluids and stool softeners through his esophageal feeding tube, and warm water soaks. He goes back for a recheck st the hospital next week. We still have about $2000 to raise to cover his $6500 surgery/hospitalization bill, so if you’re feeling generous, he (and we) would be very grateful! #loveoneanother #sulcata #oscar #tortoise #sulcatasofinstagram #vetmed #reptile #reptilemedicine #exoticvetmed #exoticvet #sulcatatortoise (at Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmNxHQmr6u6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Great God Om is happy that the dandelions are back. Halfway through filming this video, I started to regret the green nail polish. If I don't learn my lesson, I'm going to lose a finger one of these days.

[ My family rescued a pair of baby sulcata tortoises that were randomly dropped off at our auction house. I've already arranged for one of my associates in the HERPS community of vendors to take them in for rehabilitation. But before that... enjoy this one little guy on a keyboard. ]

How Long Do Tortoises Live?
Introduction
tortoise lifespan : How long do tortoises live? That’s a great question!
The lifespan of a tortoise really depends on the species. Some tortoises can live for over 100 years, while others have a lifespan of only 10 or 20 years.
So what affects a tortoise’s lifespan? Well, things like diet, environment and genetics all play a role. But the most important thing is to make sure you provide your tortoise with a healthy diet and the right living conditions.
The Lifespan of Different Tortoise Species
So, how long do tortoises live? That depends on the species.
Some tortoises can live for up to 100 years, while others only have a lifespan of 10 or 20 years. The Galapagos tortoise is the longest-living species, with a lifespan of up to 100 years.
The giant Aldabra tortoise comes in second, with a lifespan of up to 80 years. And the African spurred tortoise is third, with a lifespan of up to 60 years.
As you can see, the lifespan of tortoises varies depending on the species. So if you’re thinking about getting a tortoise as a pet, make sure you do your research and find out how long your chosen species can live.
Factors That Affect Tortoise Lifespan
So how long do tortoises live, you ask? It really depends on a variety of factors, such as the species of tortoise, the environment it lives in, and how well it’s taken care of.
For example, a Russian tortoise can live for up to 50 years, while a Mediterranean tortoise can live for up to 160 years. The lifespan of a tortoise also depends on its diet and whether it has been spooked or not.
If you’re thinking about getting a tortoise as a pet, it’s important to do your research and find out what the average lifespan is for that particular type of tortoise. That way you can make sure you’re prepared for the long haul!
How to Ensure Your Tortoise Has a Long and Healthy Life
Now that you know how long tortoises can live, the next question is: how can you help ensure your tortoise has a long and healthy life?
There are a few things you can do to make sure your tortoise stays healthy. The most important is to make sure your tortoise has a balanced diet. They need protein, fruits, and vegetables to stay healthy.
You also need to provide your tortoise with plenty of fresh water and make sure they have a place to hide and get away from the sun. And lastly, make sure you take your tortoise to the vet for regular checkups.
Conclusion
Tortoises are a great pet option if you’re looking for a long-term commitment – they can live for decades! But before you bring one home, be sure to do your research to make sure you can provide the best care possible.
Tortoises require a lot of care and attention, and they’re not a low-maintenance pet option. They need a warm, dry environment and plenty of space to roam. If you’re considering a tortoise as a pet, be prepared for a long-term commitment – they could easily outlive you!

Well, didn’t expect to be crying when I got the mail today, but here we are… For as many difficulties as we had with UC Davis’ large animal staff during Cromwell’s medical journey (if you’re just joining us, we had to take him to Purdue last year to get the lifesaving care he needed), the team of doctors and entire staff at the UCD’s Companion Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery Service (CAPE) couldn’t have given us more thorough and compassionate care for Oscar. Beyond two surgeries, CT scans, X-rays, hospital stays, medication, tube feeding, vibration therapy, and continuous lab work, they were available to advise, listen, and above all, not give up on our brave little guy. When I showed up sobbing with an unresponsive Oscar in the middle of the ER on the weekend, they tried for a very long time to resuscitate him, and when they could not, spent their valuable time consoling me. Today I received this thoughtful gift in the mail…an imprint of Oscar’s two back feet which I often told the doctors I adored because they looked like little brontosaurus feet. With it came a card with beautiful messages from both of Oscar’s doctors and all the staff members who worked with him. Not just the standard, “Sorry for your loss,” but heartfelt, personal messages, many expressing how staff connected with Oscar and would never forget him or how hard we all worked to save him. I will make a longer post soon sharing Oscar’s full autopsy results, but today let us take a moment to sit with our gratitude for these kind, innovative, dedicated veterinarians who did so much for Oscar and continue to work hard each and every day for our animal friends. @ucdavisvetmed @ucdavisvetmed_vcct #drsosa #drmegan #grateful #sulcata #sulcatatortoise (at Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp9YayiurOb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
