A FILM YOU SAW RECENTLY

The last film I watched was Kung Fu Panda 4. The plot centered around Po and Zhen going on a journey to defeat a new villain called The Chameleon. Critic reviews were disappointed with the movie and so was I. In my opinion, it was a discredit to the franchise.

MY HOMETOWN

My hometown is Gampaha. It is located in the Western Province and consists of a few large towns and smaller villages clustered together. Gampaha is well known for betel production, as well as for being a peaceful place to live. While I did not grow up there, I enjoy visiting it often.

THE LAST BOOK YOU READ

The last book I read was a book called ‘Inspired’. It was a collection of biographies and short interviews centered around notable figures and activists in Sri Lanka, categorized into various sectors.

SUMMARIZING - NOTES

A summary is a more condensed version of the original material, which still preserves its key points.

Summaries are generally written in a neutral tone, and in the third person, and contains only ⅓ of the words contained in the source material.

A good summary aims to do the following:

Eliminate redundancy.

Eliminate long-winded statements and excessive wordiness.

Change passive voice into active voice.

Avoid examples and long lists.

Avoid metaphors, similes and descriptive words.

These are the steps to writing an effective summary, as suggested by lecturer Ms. Tharangi Jayasekara:

Skim read the information. Note sub-headings, the first and last paragraphs and topic sentences.

 2. Read the text carefully. Use a dictionary if necessary.

 3. Write notes in point form using key words and ideas.

 4. Rewrite it in your own words.
