Hao Shuai: Have you had this kind of weird experience before, where you feel like you’re being played by someone… but at the same time you can’t catch that person’s weakness? Sun Yi Qiu: When I first got to know you, that was the feeling.

I’ve watched 11 episodes of Tientsin Mystic so far and there’s a lot I’m enjoying. Spoilers.
I didn’t realize this was a procedural crime show even though it should’ve been obvious, so that’s on me lol. I’d just watched Burning Ice, so I wanted to watch something that was not procedural crime to change things up. But anyway, this show has been fun to watch so far so whatever.
Despite this show being set in the Republican Era, it’s not the typical glamorous Republican Era Shanghai backdrop that we see throughout this show. We’re not walking down roads and passing by grand clubs. We’ve seen that, but it’s rare when it comes on screen. Because of Guo Deyou and Gu Ying’s more traditional backgrounds, we see a lot more of the older architecture and buildings that haven’t been taken down or renovated into more Western-looking buildings.
Speaking of Guo Deyou and Gu Ying, I did think their costumes were a bit strange at the beginning, but they’re kind of growing on me because they act as an extension of the characters’ personalities and self expression.
I think it’s very cool that mysticism plays such a big role in this show, seeing as how a lot of Cdramas tend to shy away from that stuff to steer clear of the censors. I don’t know if you could call the smoke technique superpowers or anything though. If anything, they seem more like heightened awareness, so I guess that’s why they’re on the safe side right now.
I would consider the first arc to be all of the events leading up to Hushu revealing to Ding Mao that he killed his father. I thought it was very cool that the "side mysteries” are actually directly related to Ding Yiqiu’s death, so they didn’t feel like side mysteries and yet they technically were.
This next arc seems to be about zombie type creatures being controlled by some sort of bug. I’m not so sure about this (seems to be leaning towards the supernatural and imaginary science), but I’m willing to suspend my disbelief.
There are times when the show moves a little bit slowly. For example, Guo Deyou, Ding Mao, and Gu Yi did take a while (in terms of on-screen time) to research Sun Laoqi’s death. But the thing is, they filled up a lot of that time with a mix of realistic discussion between fellow investigators, and cute moments between friends.
Even though the four main leads are young, this show doesn’t feel like an Idol Drama. Things about the characters and premises are subtle. The main characters are likeable, but it’s shown in a way that’s less showy. Plus, we see that all the characters do have their own flaws.
Despite there being four main leads, all of them contribute to investigations in their own ways, which I love. None of them are there “just for kicks.” Some people might argue that Gu Ying is just tagging along but from time to time, she gets them out of sticky situations, or cons other people into revealing information. Xiao Lanlan does have considerably less on screen time than the three other mains though. I wonder if that will change in the future.
When Guo Deyou, Gu Ying, and Ding Mao were sneaking into the hospital full of corpses, I thought the sneaking around scenes were really fun to watch! They didn’t make use of too many gimmicks to drive up suspense. We saw it all in the acting and the timing, and I really enjoyed it.
At this point, in episode 11, all of the characters have already established friendships with one another. Guo Deyou and Ding Mao were a bit wary of each other in the beginning but now? They’re bantering best bros. I love that all the characters don’t let the small bullshit get in the way of what’s important, which is getting down to the truth.
Anyway, I’ve been really excited about watching this show lately :3

I love the small details like Hao Shuai going “Your small face’s become so skinny these days! I’m so sorry I was so busy I didnt come and see you...” and Sun Yi Qiu: “You came over twice today” and also Lin Yu Ming picking up Sun Yi Qiu’s phone and going “You’re looking for Sun Yi Qiu? He’s gone out - oh it’s Hao Shuai? No, don’t come over.” Even when he’s not there on screen Hao Shuai basically has half a foot in Yi Qiu’s office space all the time and I love it
