thinking about the fact that despite their being complete opposites, SpongeBob and Squidward both end up alone in some way during the musical. Squidward deliberately sectioned himself off from everyone else to try and fend for himself and convincing himself that this wasn’t truly the case, and that everyone actually loves him despite the fact that when he got the chance to prove himself and his worth, he blew it because of his temper and acidity towards others. On the other hand, SpongeBob strives to join with the others for a common cause but they all leave him alone, with Patrick going to be the super sea star savior and Sandy coming this close to abandoning the town because of the hate and stress brought to her by the citizens, and Sponge had to fight to convince her to stay. In the end, he had his friends by his side, but for a short moment he was completely alone and hopeless, with nobody there to support him.
In the end, Squidward ended up alone because of his own self-destructive and emotion driven impulse decisions; SpongeBob was alone because of the actions of others and their haste to save themselves before anybody else. The difference between them is SpongeBob fought to get someone, anybody back on his side, while Squidward let his anger rule him and spited anybody trying to encourage him, pushing everyone away.

one small detail that i love in the SpongeBob Musical is these lyrics in Super Sea Star Savior
the sardines make it sound like they are his one source of support, and the only ones that will be around and help him “for a change.” they try to isolate him from SpongeBob and Sandy because they know he probably won’t leave his friends unless they really lay it on him that they are the only important ones that care about him.
