Tony gets so used to carrying Morgan inside after she's fallen asleep during car rides. Something about it lulls her to sleep nearly every time, although usually whenever they leave the house it means an eventful day ahead, so it makes sense for her to get tuckered out.
But because he's so used to it, it's almost muscle memory. That's why, when he opens the door and reaches to unbuckle the seat belt, it takes him a split second to remember that it's Peter this time, a nearly nineteen year old kid who just got an inch taller than him in the past month. No wonder Happy gives him an odd look.
He still unbuckles the seatbelt, but merely taps Peter on the shoulder to wake him up. "We're here, buddy."
It happens many more times. Rhodey was there for one of them, and Peter was being difficult that time around. Tony stood there for two minutes patiently trying to get him to wake up. Rhodey acted like it was nothing, but after dinner he gave him a bit of a hard time. "That kid really has you wrapped around his finger. Whenever you fell asleep I'd just slap you."
There does come a time where he doesn't wake Peter up. Someone with a grudge pulls Tony out of retirement for the day. By the time the person is apprehended, Peter's pretty beat up and Tony isn't doing too good himself.
Happy drives them back to the cabin, so Tony's in the passenger seat. He still has that muscle memory, and this time when he opens Peter's door, he decides to let him sleep. Maybe it's the rips in Peter's suit that does it, or the dried blood on his forehead.
Tony unbuckles the seatbelt, carefully maneuvering it around him, then sets an arm behind Peter's back and his other under Peter's knees. Tony's wounds ache in protest but he ignores it, along with Happy asking him what the hell he was doing.
He carries him inside and straight to the guest bedroom that's slowly turning into Peter's. He's careful when he sets Peter down on the bed.
"Oh my god," Pepper says from behind him. She walks up to his side, shocked by his condition as well as Peter's. "Is he okay? Are you okay?"
Tony nods and places a kiss to her cheek. He looks back to Peter, and can't help but pull the comforter over him, tucking it under his chin. Then he notices some loose stands of hair and pushes them away from his face.
"Alright," Pepper says with a hand on his arm. "He's all good. Now we need to get you cleaned up."
Tony's reluctant for a moment as she tries to gently lead him away. He adjusts the comforter one more time, then follows Pepper. When he stops in the doorway to turn the bedroom light off, he watches him for a moment.
Tony suddenly smiles and flicks the light off. Peter had been pretending to be asleep, he realized. Morgan had done that to Tony countless times, and even more with all the times she actually got away with it.
Well, with Peter it's different, considering he's nearly an adult, but Tony lets it slide this time. He does say "Get some rest, Pete" before he closes the door, if only to poke fun and make the kid second guess his acting skills.
It's possible that what Rhodey said is true, but as he sits in the bathroom on the closed toilet seat while Pepper picks glass out of his arm, Tony realizes he doesn't mind. Whether it's a potato gun mark II, victory over him in a game of paper football, or getting carried to bed, it's Tony who's been the one to enable being wrapped around their fingers, as Rhodey put it.
He can't say that that's a bad thing.

“Hey, kid?” He calls out, his voice raising at the end, indicating there’s something he’d like to ask.
Peter pulls his face out of his school books and looks up and over at him. He smiles briefly, “Yeah? What’s up, Mr. Stark?”
Tony hesitates for a moment, looking at the kid who’s two tables away in his garage, doing the last bit of homework required before the end of his senior year- and graduation. Tony wonders if he should have not disturbed him for something that seems a bit silly. Regardless, he turns on his stool, clasps his hands together in his lap, and asks, “You know that I love you?”
Peter tilts his head and sets his pen down on his notepad. “Uh, yes?”
“It’s not something that I easily express,” Tony admits. “It was just something my father never did. I have trouble saying it outright, to Pepper even, sometimes.”
Peter turns towards him on his stool, and it suddenly seems silly that they’re talking with a table between them, but neither moves from their spot. Then he shrugs, “I guess I sort of knew without you having to say it. Like me with May or Ned.”
Tony must have not concealed his doubt well enough, because Peter shifts in his seat and says, “I love you too, Mr. Stark.” He says it like he hopes it had been obvious, proving his point of ‘it goes without saying’.
Tony's shoulders relax. He takes a moment to asses the kid’s expression, and from what he can tell, the kid’s curious why he brought it up in the first place. Instead of telling him the reason, Tony stands up and approaches the table between them. He messes with some of the parts that litter the table, and jokes: “If you really love me, you’ll help me with this after your homework.” He raises an eyebrow.
Peter nods and immediately returns to scribbling things in his notebook. “Three minutes, tops,” he promises. He flips a page in his school book, skims the paragraph, then pauses to glance up at Tony. He smiles reassuringly, then goes back to reading.
Well, the reason why he asked clearly wasn’t an issue anymore.

“Did you hear what I-? Are you asleep?”
Peter jolts up like someone had shouted ‘BOO’, looks around to remember where he is, and ducks his head to hide the heat creeping to his cheeks. “Sorry, Mr. Stark.”
He glances over but it was too quick so he glances once more, and catches Tony's unamused expression. Tony makes a show of tossing a web shooter down onto the table like it doesn't matter, but then he asks, "Did you hear any part of what I've been saying for the past half hour? I already gave you the quick version, I can't condense it any more than that."
Peter stares down at the other web shooter that's still on his arm, trying to dig his finger under it to scratch his irritated skin, and mumbles, "I heard the beginning..."
Tony raises an eyebrow, questioning him further.
"Y'know, the— About the web distance-weight ratios...?" He squints and it's obvious he doesn't believe it either. Peter wasn't sure if Tony said that or if that was something he had thought about himself.
"So you heard nothing," Tony deadpans. He sighs and turns on his stool, and taps at a 3D hologram of the web formula. "Luckily for you, I just needed your input. I'll do this on my own. I've done it before, the first two times, right?" He's clearly being extra and feigning being so offended, but it still makes Peter worry.
"No— Mr. Stark, I want to help! I'm sorry, really. I promise, I'll listen this time." He leans forward to give him his full attention, but only a second passes before he glances away as he tries to itch his wrist.
Tony grabs his arm, "Stop that." He takes the web shooter off and tosses it onto the table. "I'll have that fixed," he tells him, and that's that. He turns back to the 3D model. "So, not getting enough sleep?"
Peter holds back a groan. "No, no. I get plenty of sleep." He doesn't, and they both know it, but he's already getting lectured about it by May. He doesn't need it from anyone else.
"Define plenty; you were practically going to fall off that stool." Tony, for emphasis, kicks one of the stool's legs. "You have school, kiddo. Believe me when I say you'll regret falling asleep at every class."
"Well I didn't sleep much last night," Peter admits, "but usually I do. I swear." On cue, he has to hold back a yawn. He really does feel tired, exhausted even, but he had promised to swing by the Tower and work with him, and he won't make the same mistake twice. "I'm wide awake," he lies, and tries to reassure Tony with a bright smile.
Tony looks like he wants to say something about that, but he hesitates and merely looks at him for a moment. Then he turns his head slightly, "FRI? Can we get a coffee for this kid?"
"By what means, boss? Dum-E, Pepper, or through a delivery service?"
"The last one."
Peter furrows his eyebrows. "I don't drink coffee; it's too bitter."
"With extra sugar, FRIDAY," Tony adds. "Of diabetic proportions."
Peter chuckles a bit at that. Still, he can recall the last time he had coffee and it wasn't a pleasant experience. He isn't sure it will affect his energy at all, either.
Tony turns his attention back to the 3D model and starts explaining the changes he made while Peter had started to doze off.
Peter stops listening a bit after that, preoccupied with the thought of a delivery man climbing all those steps since the elevator was broken. He knew he should mention it to Tony and have FRIDAY cancel the order, but his thoughts start to get a little fuzzy and mush together.
"Pete, you with me?"
"Hmm?" He slumps down and rests his elbow on the table. "Yeah...molecules, compounds..." He yawns openly and tries to hide it a good two seconds too late.
"You don't have anything to add?" Tony presses. They both know Peter usually likes to talk about this stuff. "My voice is that awful, huh," Tony half-jokes.
Peter's eyes close but he forces them open again, if only for a moment. "Mm no, it's calming... relaxing.." He smiles at him, both to reassure him and because of the comparison he just thought of. "Like those radio stations, where they just talk." He hesitates, trying to think of a particular one, and his eyes nearly close again. "NPR."
"Should I be honored or offended?" Tony mumbles.
"Why did May listen to those," Peter continues, ignoring him. "They made me fall asleep...always, as a kid."
"That's probably why."
Peter frowns at that slight insult, and folds his arms on the table to rest his head on them. "Well," he says, but he doesn't finish voicing the thought.
He hears Tony stand up from his chair, then say, "The coffee's mine, then, if I'm going to make sure you don't start hibernating. Aunt May said back at five. FRIDAY? Put a note and tell the delivery guy I'll meet him at the door. I just remembered that the ele..."
Peter falls asleep before Tony can finish.

A Embarrassed Teen on Halloween — fluff w/ peter
The logical thing for Peter to dress up as for Halloween would be, well, Spider-Man. There would be no costs, no time spent waiting as May struggled to understand YouTube sewing videos, among other reasons.
He does wear the spider suit, but it becomes an undersuit for a much bulkier, heavier one.
Peter ends up going as Iron Man. He knew there was no possible way to imitate some of the newer nano-tech models, so he designs a suit after the older, more simple ones.
It's not just shapes out of cardboard. He finds scraps of metal, and some red and gold paint, and with the help of Ned he's got a suit that's not half bad. After some thinking he designs a fake arc reactor to be round, to fit the suit model, although he's pretty sure Tony's newest one is a vague diamond shape.
Ned, who had convinced him in the first place to dress up for Halloween despite almost being an adult, says to go for the facial hair too, and before Peter can even begin to say how ridiculous that is, there's brown marker lines on his face.
That had been courtesy of MJ, who surprisingly hung out with them regularly now and even more surprisingly thought the facial hair was funny. She had been the one to draw it on him.
Frustrated, a bit embarrassed, and confused that MJ even liked the idea of Halloween (but, he thought, of course she does. Besides its weird pagan origins, everything about it is something she likes), Peter heads out in the evening as Iron Man, with a nameless vampire and Qui-Gon Jinn beside him.
Few people seem to care that they're older when they go trick or treating. For the few people that do, MJ manages to convince them that they're all just chaperoning their little siblings, and then things continue on smoothly.
"I can't believe it! Extra large candy bars!"
"Did you see him? Those candy bars costed him less than his watch."
"Guys, it's kinda hard to see in the dark with sunglasses on."
They all stop walking down the sidewalk, and the two look to Peter as he takes the sunglasses off that he had borrowed from MJ, who had borrowed them from her father.
"But the look's not complete without them," Ned tells him.
"Well...I have the same eye color as him. Isn't that good enough?" Peter shrugs. He puts the sunglasses on his pile of candy in his bag. "We should hurry, it's getting late."
They walk quickly, stopping briefly at the house at the end of the block, before venturing towards the heart of the city. They avoid Halloween house parties that spill outside onto the streets as they make their way to a certain destination.
Some companies are putting out a lot of candy for anyone who's letting their kids walk through the busy city to their company offices late at night. That happens to mean Iron Man, a vampire, and Qui-Gon Jinn.
Ned begins to lead the way, excited when a brightly lit building is across the street from them. All the lights are on, shining through the windows, and animated Halloween decorations wait by the front doors.
Peter sees several people moving about inside the lobby and frowns. "Are you sure it's not an office party? I don't know if we should go."
"We definitely should."
"What?"
But Ned's already crossing the street, so Peter rushes to catch up with MJ close behind. Sure enough, by a cobweb covered skeleton there's a witch's cauldron of candy and a sign saying "one per person please". It's in front of a pillar a few yards from the doors, and as Ned sneaks two pieces of candy, Peter can't help but look at who's inside.
There's men and women waking and talking, drinking alcohol and eating platters of cheese, but they're all in formal clothes rather than in costumes.
Peter feels one of his friends dump candy into his bag for him, but it's not enough for him to look away. He thought he saw someone vaguely familiar, but now their back is turned and they're walking away. Before he can see them disappear out of view, someone cuts in front by the doors.
Peter pales when he locks eyes with the person, and suddenly remembers that he's got brown fucking magic marker on his face.
"What!?" Peter grabs MJ's arm and makes a run for it. Ned yells at him but catches up, and the three of them spill candy as they round a sharp corner and dodge a woman getting into a cab.
Peter briefly glances to make sure the sunglasses are still there. He doesn't slow down until they're four blocks north and MJ pulls her arm away to stop and catch her breath.
"God, Peter! What was that about?" Ned gasps, hunched over.
Peter sighs and picks up a candy bar that fell out of Ned's bag. "Sorry, man." He returns the candy bar to his bag, then looks at Ned with hesitation. "I saw Mr. Stark. He was there, at that office party."
MJ narrows her eyes, but not in an accusatory way. "Why would Tony Stark be at an office party on Halloween?"
"Maybe it was a charity event, I don't know. But he saw me, he saw me like this." Peter gestures to himself.
"Are you sure he saw you? It's dark outside."
"There were streetlights, and I have a glowing circle on my chest, Ned. I think he knows what that is. It lights up like half of my face."
He goes over to planted flowers nearby and sits on one of the four low brick walls that acts as the flower pot. The trio is silent for a moment. MJ starts to shiver as the cold night wind picks up.
Then Ned speaks up and says, "Isn't that a good thing? Tony Stark saw your awesome costume of him. He saw that you chose to be him for Halloween. It's like, an honor to be someone you would want to dress up as."
Peter doesn't know how to respond to that, but he's flattered.
Then: "...yeah," MJ agrees while avoiding their gaze. "It is pretty, uh, cool. And you did good on your costume..."
Peter looks at both of them, and heat spreads to his cheeks. He stands up. "We should go home," is all he says in response. "I'll give you all the sour candy," he tells Ned. And to MJ, "Uh, you can have all the white chocolate I got."
"Oh...Thanks."
They take a moment to see where they are, then head their way back to May's apartment, where Ned will spend the night and MJ's mother will pick her up. Despite the cold, they walk slowly, not wanting the night to really end.
Iron Man, a vampire, and Qui-Gon Jinn get to May's apartment quite late, and MJ's mother is already there waiting. The two say goodbye, then head inside.
Armor comes off, then the spider suit, and in their place Peter puts on sweatpants and a comfy sweater. While Ned sorts the candy and puts the white chocolate to the side to give to MJ later, Peter checks his phone which he hadn't been able to take with him considering the suit had no pockets.
"Ned," Peter blurts as he stares at his phone screen.
"What's wrong?"
Peter turns his phone around and shows him the text message.
Hey kid. Was that you out there? Gotta say, the suit was impressive. Say hi to your friends and Aunt May for me, and don't let all that candy rot your guys' teeth.
Also, nice touch with the beard. But just don't ever tell me if you used Sharpie.
-T.S.
"...I can never show my face in front of him again."
Ned bites his lip. "Uh, about that...? You've still got the beard."
Peter groans, and shoves his face with candy.

Prompt #14:Tear-Stained |Whumptober
Tony finds him curled up on the hardwood floor of the kitchen, his mask laying a little ways to the side of him. Peter's knees are tucked against his chest tightly even though he's in deep sleep, like his muscles are afraid to relax.
When Tony walks closer, he sees that Peter's face is red, puffy, and blotchy from dried tears staining his cheeks. Tony's eyebrows furrow in confusion and worry. He rarely sees the kid like this, and it always digs into his heart.
Tony calls to Karen softly and asks her what happened.
"I'm not sure. He's been feeling down all week. Maybe something to do with MJ? I heard she was going to move away for University."
Tony sighs. Poor kid, he thinks. He looks up from Peter and at the apartment around him. It's small, Peter had been against anything bigger than the one he used to share with his aunt, so the kid's room is close by and it would only take a few paces to get the kid in his bed.
Unfortunately, Tony's made of ones and zeroes and there's no solidity to his form. He has to ignore the parental urge to scoop Peter up and put him in bed where he'll be more comfortable.
Instead, he crouches but makes sure he isn't too close. He says his name a few times, until the kid's eyes open and he sits upright. Tony smiles. "Hey buddy."
Peter, disoriented, looks him up and down, then spots his mask and picks it up. He stares down at it while he talks. "...Hi. I haven't, y'know, seen you in a while."
Tony agrees that he hasn't put on a physical form for quite some time. There's something nice, though, about going from an AI on the entire worldwide internet to just a hologram in a room, his boundaries outlined by sensors in the ceiling.
"I didn't want to wake you up, but you looked so uncomfortable on the floor like that."
Peter nods. "Thanks..." He slowly gets up and stands, then realizes just how awfully curled up he had been and stretches his arms. He tosses his mask down onto the kitchen counter, then looks back to Tony.
Tony waits for him to say something. He notices how the kid's face is still red, and decides to take the initiative. "It seems like something happened..."
Peter nods, then shrugs.
Tony doesn't know what that's supposed to convey. He does know, however, that Peter doesn't like to talk until he's ready. "How about you go get some sleep and we can talk about it later," he suggests. "You can get out of that suit and into soft pajamas. I'm envious, really." He winks, well aware that he's dawned a holographic business suit. It's become a habit.
Peter smiles and nods again. "Okay," he agrees. He turns and heads to his bedroom, shutting the door softly behind him.
Tony wanders to the sitting room, and starts to pace back and forth between the couch and coffee table. He worries that Peter might not want to talk about it when he wakes back up. He wonders if it had been about MJ, or something else.
Worries and questions fill his head and he starts walking through the coffee table without realizing it, his lower legs disappearing and reappearing with every turn and pace.
"Stark," Karen calls, and he stops. "It's alright," she assures him.
Tony nods. "Right." He remembers Peter's smile about the envy joke, and knows that she's right. Tony knows that smile. It was true, genuine, a 'im a tiny bit better already' smile.
Still, it had to have been rough for Peter to give up in the kitchen and just lay on the floor, defeated. But that's what Tony knows he is there for, to help Peter, including getting him back up on his feet (in both senses).
What he can do is limited, considering the circumstances, but he thinks he's doing an okay job.
