Regarding the transgender and autistic coding of Octodad: Dadliest Catch.
To preface: this essay will be in two parts. One with spoilers, and one without. The spoilers will be hidden under a cut, and optional.
youtube
Octodad: Dadliest Catch is a 2014 action/adventure game in which the protagonist, known only as “Octodad”, is an octopus masquerading as a human man. If it sounds ridiculously goofy, that’s because it is. Octodad rarely takes itself seriously, and that works to its credit.
Now, before going any further, I want to take a moment to lay some groundwork for the premise of the game and how it relates to otherness. Octodad, being an octopus, is fundamentally Other. He is a nonhuman in disguise, he is living a lie, et cetera. The concept of beings that disguise themselves as human is an old one, from Greek gods seeking hospitality to changelings left behind as supernatural brood parasites. They are shapeshifters and deceivers, whose stories are born from the fear of Otherness. And more often than not, these beings have malicious intent.
But Octodad, fundamentally, does not. He is a loving father and husband who hides his identity out of fear. He is Other, and this otherness isn’t portrayed as predatory or evil in any way. And viewing this story through the lens of Octodad, controlling his actions, the player gets to know a little bit about him.
Back to the trailer— Octodad’s gameplay is showcased, and it’s immediately obvious that the control scheme isn’t exactly typical. Players must control each limb individually, resulting in sloppy, uncoordinated movements. Octodad stumbles through the grocery store, across a play set, leaving destruction in his wake. He isn’t trying to make a mess, unlike a certain goose, but rather, this is the natural result of what he is. He’s literally a fish out of water— and yes, he is a fish if you’re pedantic enough about cladistics, which I am going to be for the sake of this metaphor.
The control scheme is deliberately messy, a stylistic choice that forces the player to constantly remember that Octodad is something Other, and the resulting mistakes have consequences. The levels are designed in such a way that even an experienced player will have to make a mess at times, and it comes with a sense of shame— after all, a normal protagonist could do this. Mario could platform his way through this grocery store with no problem! But Octodad can’t. He slips on banana peels and breaks open crates and spills fruit all over the linoleum. And the UI forces you to be constantly aware of when others are watching, furthering that sense of shame.
The game won’t punish you for slipping up sometimes. But the mess you’ve made, the judgmental gazes of the NPCs, will. You are an imposter, facing a constant uphill battle to perform difficult and unnatural tasks that are effortless for the humans around you. They cannot see that you’re an octopus. They do not know that you’re an octopus. So long as you are wearing your suit, no one can tell, even with the tentacles and bulbous head and suckers on your limbs. But they can see your mistakes, and your failures.
How does that relate to autism and transgenderism? Well, let’s start with autism, since the transgender coding is mostly in story spoiler territory, while the autism is largely in the gameplay mechanics. Autism is a pretty broad spectrum, and it’s difficult to point at something and definitively call it autistic-coded when the autistic experience varies so drastically from person to person. But Octodad and his Otherness, even as a silly octopus, strongly parallels autistic masking.
Octodad’s enforced sense of shame strongly resonates with the autistic experience— constantly aware of eyes on you, always messing up because no one explained the rules to you properly, or struggling with sensory issues or executive dysfunction when everyone is trying to convince you that your experiences are normal and you’re just being dramatic. And in that sense, it’s cathartic to see Octodad, because he is unmistakably and undeniably Other. You cannot say “Oh, honey, everyone’s a little octopus, you’re just not trying hard enough,” to an octopus the way that neurotypicals often do with autistic people. You cannot deny him his Otherness which causes his struggles.
Remember the changeling story I mentioned earlier? Changeling myths and autism are inextricably connected, and far too often, they demonize autism. The problem with trying to define humanity in a way that excludes imposters that pretend to be human is that you will inevitably end up excluding and hurting people, particularly those who are neurodivergent, queer, disabled, or otherwise in a minority. So, if you cannot define humanity without excluding humans from the definition, then it serves to reason that broadening your scope will include non-humans. And this is portrayed as an unambiguously good thing, to acknowledge the humanity of an octopus.
Real life isn’t like Among Us, where the imposters are murderous freaks who unhinge their jaws and chomp off the top half of their fellow crewmates before hopping into the vents. Sometimes, they’re scared people who go through life hurting because they tried to be normal until they forgot who they were.
And now, let’s examine the story and talk about the further coding it contains. The first thing that catches my attention is Octodad’s morning routine— coffee. It seems innocuous at first, but it’s later revealed that this is the only reason Octodad has the ability to walk upright, because he’s constantly self-medicating with caffeine.
There’s a very domestic portion of the game where you see just how much Octodad adores his family, he does the chores for his wife whom he loves a lot, and then— he survives a couple murder attempts. His neighbor knows he’s an octopus, is a chef at the local grocery store, and is the main antagonist of the game. He breaks down the fence between their yards with some sort of nightmarish combine-harvester machine that nearly sucks in Octodad, but the situation is resolved quickly enough. Then, just a little later in the day, he goes out to the grocery store, where the chef finds him and chases him with a knife, threatening to turn him into moderately priced sushi. Interestingly, though, is the fact that Octodad seems more worried about his wife finding out than the fact that he’s an octopus than the threats on his life. We don’t know how often these happen, but he just brushes this off and hopes to keep up the masquerade a little longer. He has to be human, he has to be normal in order to be loved, and nearly dying alone to his murderous neighbor is a small price to pay. And… it’s sad, honestly.
Tumblr media
The real meat of the game, though, is at the aquarium. Octodad is frankly terrified of this place, but he can’t tell his wife why. There was a scene that stuck with me— it’s meant to introduce you to the fact that the Biologist enemies are a threat who will recognize and out you, but it made me think about TERFs. They always claim they can spot trans people, as if there’s some secret sense for it, as if a world in which women are subject to random and invasive genital inspections is somehow better than a world where the lady in the bathroom stall next to you is standing up to pee.
Tumblr media
After getting through the first part of the museum, Octodad has to find each member of his family and do some minigame puzzles. The kids are absolutely adorable, but what struck me was the conversation with Scarlet, as she grows frustrated with Octodad’s secrecy. He sleeps downstairs, he somehow “made more” when the printer ran out of ink, he lost a limb in a plumbing accident but it somehow grew back, and he’s keeping things from her. He won’t have an honest conversation, and she’s getting frustrated.
Take a moment to imagine the veneer of metaphor peeled away. Imagine you have been married to a man you love for ten years, but you know he’s hiding something from you. He doesn’t sleep in the same bed as you, never wanted to consummate things, and you’ve respected his privacy and consent, but he won’t explain why. He’s ecstatic about raising kids together, but he doesn’t want biological ones. There are these instances you can’t explain, like his sudden insistence on buying a shark plushie from IKEA, or the time you caught him mailing a tank top (was it a tank top, really, because you never got a good look at it) to someone and he looked guilty. You find a list of names, some of them crossed out, and wonder who these women are. He never wants to look in the mirror or have pictures taken. You love him and you want to respect his privacy, but the secrets are driving a rift between you.
Imagine it from the other side, now. You have been married to the woman you love for ten years. She doesn’t know you’re trans, and you’re terrified she’ll leave you if she finds out.. She didn’t seem to mind when you told her you didn’t want to get horizontal, but she doesn’t know it’s because sex in this body makes you dysphoric. You love your children so much, they’re the light and joy of your life, but you can’t help but wonder if your wife wanted to have them the old-fashioned way. You try to escape what you are but it’s getting harder to repress. You know she suspects something. You ended up with a binder, and sent it to someone you met online. You bought yourself a Blåhaj and you don’t know why it was that desperation had seized up in your chest when you saw it. You spent ages on name websites, looking for the perfect one, writing them down to see how they felt. You have the most amazing wife in the world and she is slipping away because you couldn’t keep pretending.
Scarlet asks Octodad to meet her at the shark tank when he’s ready to have a real conversation. And the shark tank is where things get interesting— the chef is there, waiting. He cuts off Octodad’s clothes with a cleaver, and tosses him into the tank, yelling, “Go back where you belong!”
The thing about the coding of Octodad is that it’s never a consistent one-to-one. That particular line? Could be read as immigrant coding, out of context. But then, looking at how easily he moves in the water compared to the flopping rag doll movements on land. He no longer has to mask, he no longer has to hide himself and navigate a world that is hostile and judgmental to him.
And he’s miserable. He misses his family. And he’s determined to find them, and save them from the chef. So he sets off to do exactly that.
There’s a series of objectives to complete to get there, but the one that stuck with me? Sneaking into the women’s bathroom. Granted, it’s for the purpose of going through the vents and causing a diversion in the break room, but it still strikes me that Octodad, who presents as a male human, has to sneak into the women’s restroom. And this is presented not as some scandalous affair of a peeping Tom, not a forbidden thing, but just an objective. That’s where the proper vents are, after all.
On a sillier note? You walk into the aquarium in a shark suit, and you have to cause a diversion. So now, rather than Octodad’s clumsiness being a source of shame, it’s his strength, and it’s a point of pride. He’s an octopus! He’s excellent at making messes!
Tumblr media
And then there’s the grand finale— it’s corny and dramatic and there’s a cafeteria on fire, and the truth is out. He’s an octopus.
And Scarlet? She says she was expecting so much worse. She loves her octopus husband exactly as he is, and no matter what adjustments she has to make, she knows her family will be stronger for it. Because now, she has the chance to love her husband in his entirety, in his Otherness, and she takes it.
Octodad is a story about an octopus walking around in a suit and pretending to be a normal human man, but it’s also a story about being closeted, masking, living in fear, and finally realizing that the love remains. That there are people who will love you as you are, genuinely and truly, tentacles and all.

Human turned Vampire variations
From the classic bite of Bram Stoker's novel explained to some really convoluted metamorphoses, here are 6 ways humans are turned into vampires throughout modern media.
Tumblr media
Shiki
This series had a slow process, similar to the classic Dracula. The shiki chooses one victim to feed off of over the course of three nights and holds said victim entirely under their sway through a means of hypnosis. Growing increasingly more anemic and unable to tell their family and friends what's happening, the victim eventually passes away from heart failure.
However, the vampire bite itself doesn't guarantee a new vampire. It's caused by an unspecified genetic factor that responds to a vampire bite. The shiki in the series gather around the grave of their latest victim and wait for signs of life, digging up their new member if they do and giving up if they start to smell the body decaying.
It led to a pretty devastating moment for one of the vampires who desperately tried to turn the rest of her family, but none of them had the genetic factor and she ended up killing all of them for nothing.
Tumblr media
Hellsing
Vampire bites virgin human of the opposite sex.
Okay, seems simple enough, but what exactly are we considering virginity here? This is an arbitrary concept with a definition that has changed multiple times over history, not to mention the 'loss of virginity' definition today varies according to who you ask. What are we considering gender? Are we strictly adhering to an individual's biological characteristics or is transgenderism/gender-fluidity at play? What about intersex individuals?
This one seems straightforward until you consider all the non-heteronormative angles, but really...I'm pretty sure no one watches this series for the plot. I think we all just showed up to see a vampire annihilate the Third Reich.
Tumblr media
Twilight
I've never read/watched the books/movies, but I've heard it's venom in this series. Is it venom? If so, that's an interesting take.
Tumblr media
Vampire in the Garden
Saliva.
The vampires of this series are the result of a genetic mutation and can change another human into a vampire by introducing an unspecified pathogen/chemical found in their saliva into the human's bloodstream.
Tumblr media
Soulless (or the Alexia Tarrabotti novels)
All right, this book series is fun and I highly recommend. British sass, steampunk Victorians, LGBTQ+ representation, fabulous vampires, and dorky werewolves, I love it.
Anyway, vampires in this series have what's called 'feeder fangs,' but the female vampires have a second smaller set called 'maker fangs.' So only a female vampire can create a new vampire.
Also, the supernatural system of this world revolves around souls. People can have an average 'amount' of soul, for lack of a better word, an unknown percentage of people can have 'excess soul,' and a rare number can have no soul. Excess soul lingers after death, so people with excess soul become ghosts when they die. Or, if they are bitten by a vampire or werewolf, they can become that supernatural being and gain immortality.
But since there's no feasible way to measure how much soul one has, becoming supernatural is a roulette with death. Similar to Shiki, immortality by vampire bite is not guaranteed.
Tumblr media
Vampire Knight
Vampires can reproduce with each other and give birth to children, essentially making them just a long-lived, virtually immortal sub-species of humanity that needs blood to survive.
There's also a vampire hierarchy of which only the rare 'purebloods' can create new vampires, but the former human vampires are unstable and often become mindless, blood-driven monsters, adding to the classicism of the upper hierarchy.
(If I remember right, it's been awhile since I read these.)
...
These are all the methods I can think of, but reblog if you can think of another method or one that's similar to the ones above.

So besides "all religion is a pathetic cope" what exactly is the point of all your recent posting?
Religion isn't a pathetic cope! Religion is fundamentally hard-wired into who we are. This is something both Dan McClellan and David Bokovoy talk about quite cogently: we are evolved to detect agents in the world around us, that agency-detection mechanism errs on the side of false positives rather than false negatives (bc false negatives tended to get eaten), and that plus other cognitive systems like our relentless pattern-matching ability and our capacity for theory of mind produce some quite complex intuitions about the world, out of which a sense of the supernatural almost inevitably falls.
Dan McClellan in his interviews on Mormon Stories in particular talks about the cognitive science side of religious studies, and the experiments done to try to get at the underlying intuitions, and he points out that in these experiments it becomes pretty evident that both atheism and the more philosophically complex forms of religion most readers of this post are probably accustomed to are the result of highly reflective attitudes toward the world; the intuitive sense of supernatural agency tends to ascribe very humanlike qualities to supernatural agents--I am reminded of some of the stuff @transgenderer has posted about the Mbuti and the Ainu and their beliefs in a parallel "spirit world" that is very much like our own, where the spirits live lives very similar to the ones we do.
When you add in the ways that religion taps into other important human social functions--collective mythmaking, social organization, the creation of networks of trust and reinforcement of particular identities--it becomes clear that religion is something which fulfills what are for many people important psychological needs, and that (in some form) we will always have something like religion with us. Now, "religion" itself is kind of a tricky category--in religious studies it is apparently accepted as a truism that "religion" is just "anything we call a religion," because it lumps together what are often some quite heterogeneous phenomena, and the original formation of the category was in discourse by mostly-Protestant Europeans trying to understand the cultures and traditions of the rest of the world mostly with reference to (again, mostly Protestant) Christianity. So as long as we're aware that this is a very loose category, and everything above has to be taken mutatis mutandis so far as it applies to individual members of the category, we can talk carefully about religion in general terms.
Dan McClellan, David Bokovoy, and the guy who originated the application of cognitive theory to the study of religion are all religious. So clearly they don't see religion as cope, or as this perspective as one that necessarily implies religion is cope.
What would be pathetic is someone who cannot tolerate the existence of an outside view of religion, either because it causes them to doubt truth claims of that religion in ways that make them uncomfortable (because the truth of that religion is deeply integrated into their personal sense of identity), or because they can only read differing viewpoints as a hostile attack, and who then sends aggressive anons to strangers on the internet as a result. That would in fact be the kind of thing that only someone with really profound insecurities that they are unloading on other people does, because they don't have the strength to deal with those insecurities themselves.

Henry Creel x Ftm!Reader
@ryancreelstrangerthings !!
Summary: Reader comes out as trans
You fumbled with your fingers nervously, sitting across the dining room table from Henry. The two of you had escaped Hawkins Lab and have been dating for about a year. You decided you needed to tell him you are trans male.
"Henry?" Your voice cracked just saying his name, great.
He hummed in response, looking up. "What is it, dear?"
You took a deep breath. Not that that really helped how hard and fast your heart was pounding in your chest. "I'm... I'm uh..." 'Stop hesitating! Just spit it out!' You cursed yourself.
Henry waited patiently for you to speak. He sat up tall, looking you in the eye with curiosity. "Yes?"
You swallowed hard, looking away. You weren't going to chicken out now. You wouldn't let yourself. You had already chickened out at least twice.
"I'm... trans." You said, looking up at him and making eye contact.
Henry saw the nervousness and anxiety written all over you. You were what? 'Trans'? What does that mean? Did you not love him anymore?
"Trans?" He asked confusedly, his eyebrows furrowing.
"Yeah- Yes." You stammered, glancing down and then back up at him.
"What does that mean?" He asked.
You realized being transgender wasn't really a thing when you two were younger, and it was incredibly uncommon still. He had been locked away in that hellish lab for 20 years, of course he isn't aware of transgenderism.
"I'm... I was... born a girl, but... switched to be a boy through surgery." You said simply.
He furrowed his brows more in confusion. "So, you're a woman?" He said confusedly. He wasn't sure how to take this, he was openly gay to you. But.... you were you, and he loved you. Maybe he was attracted to women as well? He felt his attraction to you shift slightly.
"No! No, I was born as a girl, but I had surgery to become a boy." You corrected him. "It's called transgenderism. It's not very common, but it's there. Sometimes people are born in the wrong bodies, and for me, I was a man trapped in a woman's body, but now I'm finally me." You explained. You hoped with all your heart that he would understand what you mean. You were internally begging any supernatural force for him to still be as in love with you as he was before, for him to still see you as a man.
After hearing your explanation, it made a lot more sense to Henry. He understood. "Ah." He nodded. He waited a moment, then said, "I understand now. You confused me at first, but now I see. So, you're a man now, but you weren't always?" He asked.
You nodded, smiling a little.
He looked down and nodded again. "So you are a man now? You have a..." he tailed off.
You nodded. "Yes. I haven't gotten top surgery yet, though. I could only afford one, so... I use a binder. It's like a really really tight sports bra, almost."
Henry nodded, looking into your eyes. "Alright." He gave you a small smile. "So, you still love me?"
"What?" You laughed. "Of course! Why wouldn't I?"
Henry tried to hide it, but he was incredibly relieved. "I wasn't sure what trans meant at first, I was worried you meant you didn't love me anymore." He mumbled.
He was such a sweet baby. "Of course I still love you! I was afraid that you wouldn't love me." You chuckled.
"I wouldn't love you?" He sounded baffled by this, like it was the most absurd thing he had ever heard in his life.
"Well... I dunno, I've lost a lot of friends for being who I am." You said awkwardly. "I... didn't know how you'd take it."
Henry blinked a few times, still staring into your eyes. He only did that when he was incredibly surprised. He rarely ever blinked to the point in which it was a bit unsettling. "I would never leave you, no matter what. You are my everything."

sometimes supernatural is the werewolf transgenderism and fairy nipples show sometimes it’s the bustyasianbeauties.com tentacle hentai show sometimes it’s the thermometer shoved up a guys ass angel watching porn and taking it literally show sometimes it’s the stupidest fucking thing in the whole world but sometimes it’s the show where someone had a breakdown over death and loss and hating the mere thought of it much less the process of actually experiencing and coping with it and that expression of grief was met with someone else saying that even when your loved ones are dead you never stop loving them and cherishing them and when they’re gone it will fucking gut you forever but you never would’ve felt that pain if you hadn’t first known them and cherished them and loved them so they are still with you forever and even if someday when you do stop hurting over it or it hurts less than it used to . you will still never stop loving them.

I’m sorry you’re feeling so down about finding a community to write with. :( I’ve had some really similar struggles the past few years after moving to a new place—it’s SO HARD to know where to start (and unfortunately I’m still trying to figure it out, so this is more an ask to express sympathy than offer solutions).
If it’s not too weird to ask/you don’t mind talking about it, what kind of stuff do you gravitate toward for writing?
Thank you for this lovely message!!
uhhhh what DO I write. Well. In the spirit of Anne Boyer's Not Writing, currently:
I'm not writing a short story set in historical rural ireland which uses the tradition of lifting stones to explore themes about disability, masculinity, and (of course) transgenderism.
I'm not writing a two-person, one-room play called The Immortal Irishman which is about cowardice and trauma and the experience of living through Interesting Times.
I'm not writing a YA novel about a deeply closeted 17 year old figuring out she's queer during Ireland's 2015 marriage equality referendum. I particularly wish i was writing this one because I interviewed quite a few people who were queer teens not of voting age during the referendum & the experience fucking sucked. Plus, we're only a little over a year off All That being 10 years ago & wouldn't it be great to publish a book in time for that comemoration?
I'm not writing a post-post-apocalyptic coming of age/YA novel with the working title Whalefall about a small community living difficult lives in a harsh landscape, who are contacted by a "more developed" culture who want to "trade freely" with this community, and aren't like the old empires no sir we're sustainable now. Specifically this story follows the trainee doctor of this community, who would super love to have access to better healthcare technology, especially as she has a physical disability herself, but still can't quite trust these newcomers are as benevolent as they seem.
I'm not writing a short story or possibly novella about a haunted forest, a tween ghost, and a teenager from the city who doesn't really believe in ghosts but is in this situation anyway.
I'm not writing a BBC Being Human Season 3 Softer-and-kinder AU where Hal, Tom, and Annie get a year or two of peace and healing before the vampire prophesy shit kicks off, and Tom joins a parenting group at the nearby community centre.
I'm not writing the rest of my Good Omens/Daredevil crossover WIP, where Adam turns up.
I'm not writing a novel with the working title Slime Chunks which is about reconnecting with ur childhood best friend who has since got youtube famous. & she's now in legal trouble & possibly she did some very shady things, which should be unforgivable, except that you're realising with dawning horror that you would forgive her anything.
I'm not writing the rest of my Gilmore Girls series about Rory & Paris getting together while Rory figures out the whole pregnancy & motherhood thing, & Lane is being poly with her two husbands and many girlfriends in the background.
Those are the main things I'm not writing! There are other projects too, of course.
My work tends to deal with themes of:
queerness
disability
trauma
surreal shit, the supernatural, goth stuff, etc

the way that i've had this joke stuck in my head that's like girls will claim they're fighting off "supernatural forces" and then the supernatural forces be transgenderism and only now realizing it could literally apply to danny lol

Akechi Goro Information Post
Tumblr media Tumblr media
supernatural hitman. specific murders include: trying to kill his only friend the protagonist and Actually killing his coworker and a pseudo-ally's mom and a Different pseudo-ally's dad (all on his father's orders). transgenderism: this idiot wears argyle sweater vests. what a loser. also i sort of put this in a post before but akechi having to hide his true self under layers and layers of deception to the point where im not sure he even knows who "he" really is? transgenderism. to me
He has t-boy swag imo and is major villain in P5. Also he killed a lot of people. Like so many people.
