RWBY Fight Scenes Ranked (Volume 9)

So this is a series I’ve wanted to do for a while. I love RWBY’s action, but a lot of times it’s hard to distinguish a fight scene from just an action sequence. With Volume 9, it’s been a little easier to understand which parts of the episode are full battles. I’ll be ranking them based on my standards

5.) WBY & Jaune vs NeoCat

This was just a quick teaser fight for the actual showdown in the finale. I do wish we got more fighting of NeoCat. Their fighting style & movements were very interesting. This was the last chance for a Yang vs Neo rematch, but whatever. Jaune however had some pretty solid animation, although short. He’s finally getting what I like to call the “Monty Treatment”, one on one grounded high-tempo choreography (I hope that made sense). We got a tiny glimpse of it in V8 against Ironwood but here it’s a little longer. The Pyrrha sneak was cruel but exciting.

4.) WBY & Jaune vs Jabber Walker

Another quick battle. Was expecting a little more quicker paced based on the teaser in the trailer, but it’s understandable based on the later fight against the Walker Clones. The bird was an interesting addition to the battle, wish we saw more of him (RIP). Jaune’s entry was amazing, he mostly used Juniper (MVP) but he helped a bunch. Weiss Blake & Yang have great chemistry, always following each other’s attacks perfectly. Weiss grounds the Walker, Blake restricts its attacks, and Yang deals the blows. Short & sweet.

3.) WBY & Jaune vs Walker Clones

These last three fights had amazing animation, but this one was a standout in terms of fluidity. Not a lot of people talk about this battle. The camera angles, the movement, everything was done so good. The “couples” were paired with each other, which was fine with me. Blake & Yang steal the show yet again. A lot of interesting combos. Yang’s supersaiyan switch in this fight was cool to see, the bees going back & forth with the Walkers was amazing, the bungee jump maneuver was interesting. Weiss & Jaune did great too. They made up for each other’s slip-ups. I’ve noticed by this fight that Weiss’s reflexes have increased significantly, catching Jaune’s sword almost instantly. Jaune’s gravity maneuver was pretty cool too.

2.)Team RWBY vs Final Form Cat

It was really hard to decide between this and the first pick but I chose only because I had more time with the other one. This fight was amazing. Ruby hasn’t had a consistent performance like this since Volume 4 (yes 4, not 3 like people keep assuming). I’ve always said that V4 was peak Ruby Rose action, using her semblance to zip around and slice away with her scythe. I’ve only had one request for the finale and it was to have something like this, and it definitely delivered. Weiss continuing to carry the battle being a quick support for her teammates to attack the Cat. That whole part with the glyph atmosphere was amazing. Seeing Ruby, Blake, & Yang zip around the Cat gave me huge Sonic Heroes vibes. The final strike with all 4 girls was a perfect finish.

1.) Team RWBY vs Red Prince

The infamous chess match. I was already excited for this volume, but THIS is when I was locked in. There were quick snippet matches with each girl before the actual fight, I just wanted to shoutout Blake’s part. Her quick whip movements were cool to see. The actual fight later kicks in & immediately Blake & Yang are doing their signature swinging move. Weiss handles some Red Pawns with ease & confidence love that for her. You can tell she’s starting to fight like Winter here. Always enjoy seeing her use her semblance to skate around. Blake has the least firepower of the three, but she makes up for it in movements. She does some cool flips & maneuvers around the board with her shadows. The fight really kicks in after Ruby boosts them up. Weiss really proved her statement in V1 that she would be the best teammate. She was projecting gravity glyphs for Blake WHILE activating a Nevermore summon then did it again WHILE catching Blake’s weapon WHILE activating a sword for Yang, which by the way was peak RWBY action. Yang is usually the one to deal the heavy blows, but it’s so much better when she has assistance from her teammates. This fight, as well at this whole episode, was a great callback to Players & Pieces, one of the most famous episodes of RWBY, & it’s so funny because they’re fighting chess pieces.

Alot of people thought Volume 9 wouldn’t deliver on fights because it wa said to be a more “toned-down” season, but honestly they haven’t missed on a single fight this Volume. My only gripe is that we didn’t get one with Neo, and I’m not counting the Tea Party because it was just Ruby getting her ass beat. Besides that, the fights definitely delivered for me. Can’t wait for more!!

Whoever was in charge of, I don’t know, keeping an eye on somewhat consistent character design within the Outsiders Vol 3 run. Please. I just want to talk about Grace’s hair. Actually also her boobs like holy shit they kept progressively growing and growing and growing over the course of that run.

But honestly mainly the hair. That weird fuzzy cut, short in the back, fluffed up at the top and with the weird side... strands? Was really bad.

The hair that grew in after she got burned was actually really nice, I loved that short hair cut.

The untamed long hair she donned after that was, you know, okay.

But holy hell what in the world is that Son Goku supersaiyan hairstyle she looks like she crossed genres from an anime?? (Also, where did her ribs and hips go?)

The sun-tattoo over her naval aside, I would genuinely not believe these to be the same character if shown out of context.

Grace, I am so sorry for what they did to you, they really did you dirty in the styling department and the “does this character need internal organs to live?” department. You deserve so much better.

DragonBall Rant

I just want to vent about all of my DragonBall thoughts.

1. Transformations lost their shine years ago. SS1 was a game changer, SS2 told us to always think bigger, and SS3 underscored that point. But then it's Supersaiyan God, Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan Blue, Ultra Instinct... it became a raw numbers game. I stopped watching at Battle of Gods because I hated the premise for Revival of F, but damn, does hearing about the nonstop transform barrage make me angry.

2. Frieza. "I'm going to train x months. That'll be enough for me to become stronger." Hated that. Hated how he knows exactly how long it'll take, and how he's basically right.

3. Goku's treatment. Goku seems to have lost a lot of his battle smarts amd early lessons. When I heard of Ultra Instinct, the first thing I thought about was his initial training under Mr Popo. Amd I'm not the only one. Then he makes fun of vegeta for meditating, though he should know exactly what that's worth. He's also obnoxious, and his willingness to risk other people's lives for a good fight is just bullshit.

4. Piccolo's treatment. I get that he's not the main character, but he absorbed Nail and Kami. That should've had a much bigger impact on the series than it did, but was worth nothing. By the Buu saga, he's lumped in with Krillin before Babidi and Dabura even know the saiyans can go super. We may as well have let him permanently die and after Cell shoots him through the chest.

5. DragonBall peaked in the Red Ribbon Army saga. It was a lot of fun and wits until then, but afterwards started to shift towards raw power struggles. DragonBall Z peaked at the Frieza saga, and the Androids and Cell sagas were tolerable but fun. The Cell Games saga was cool, but the way Cell returned after Goku's sacrifice, cheapened his noble courage. And the Kamehameha duel that followed was cheap. I guess it did allow the Cell Games to end on a high note, but the storytelling felt like it was studio driven (i.e. money) rather than plot or character. Buu saga gave us three most excellent battles: Vegeta vs Goku, Vegeta vs Buu, and Goku vs Buu, but it was all over the place. The hyping up of Goten led nowhere.The Fusion dance... was a nothingburger. The Z Sword... was a sauceless, cheeseless pizza. The fight was decided by a spirit bomb, something that came out of nowhere and erased all the setup from before.

So, in summary.

Franchises shouldn't be revived for the 💲💲💲. They should allowed to be retired when their time has passed.

But for now some out of place facts that weren’t mentioned in the original bio I posted of her : D

Edit: some of this info is now outdated

1. Juno tends to rely her psychic powers more than her physical body. While she does have some basic physical abilities for field missions, she usually uses psychic powers to keep her balanced (such as using telekinesis to hold her down on unsteady ground or lift something heavy) since growing up she mostly trained her brain, in both intelligence and in psychic powers . Think of an athlete who skipped leg day.

1.5. Even with physical training, Juno is still rather weak. Since Juno (sometimes legitimately) forgets to eat and doesn’t get much sleep, she doesn’t have much stamina or muscle mass. If she were playable, she’d be slower than Raz and would usually be seen using telekinesis and levitation to support herself while pulling all those 90s platformer stunts (using telekinesis to grab on to tightropes for better balance, using levitation as a bouncy pad for jump boost, etc) and maybe some of her idle animations would be her bending over, trying to catch her breath, or wiping away sweat. (also she doesn’t have acrobatic training). however, her psychic power attacks would be much stronger than Raz’s. She’d also have less base mental health than him, she’s not exactly emotionally stable, The reasons are very backstory heavy.

2. Juno’s levitation ball is purple with yellow lighting circling it. Although she can roll around on the ball form, she’d rather just sit criss cross applesauce on it And ride it. When in “ride mode” it looks like a giant roomba.

3. When releasing large amounts of raw power with electrokinesis, Juno’s hair will stick up (or “flare up”) due to static electricity. This can happen involuntarily Such as losing control of bottled up emotions, or voluntarily, such charging an attack and releasing it in a pikachu-Esque thunderbolt. Its basically Juno’s version of supersaiyan hair. The static electricity side effect is half the reason why Juno doesn’t really do much with her hair besides the basic minimum. The other half being that she’s a workaholic and she’s “got better things to do than make vain attempts to look pretty” (the last part she doesn’t actually say, which segues into 4)

4. Juno really hates looking at herself in the mirror. The only times she’ll do it are when she’s getting ready, giving herself a pep talk while trying to calm herself down (“pep” is used very VERY loosely) or when she’s having a particularly bad identity crisis. For Juno, looking at her reflection is like someone else looking at a disaster you can’t look away from. Juno is very conflicted about her sense of self.

She doesn’t know who she is. She doesn’t know what she is. She doesn’t know what kind of person is looking back at her in the mirror. All she knows is that she hates them

5. Juno’s ahoge (hair strand) sometimes changes to reflect specific emotions.

Lighting bolt: Default Question mark: Confusion/ Curiosity Releasing electric sparks- Using large amounts of power, loss of self control. usually makes brief sparks when she feels strong emotions (Usually things like Excitement, Fury, and Mental breakdown. Think of Meilin Lee and her Panda transformation, but more brief). Heart: Love (Platonic and Romantic). Droopy: Sad, tired/sleep-deprived (Low battery), guilty, upset, crippling depression, worried.

6. Juno is an ambivert on the autism spectrum. She has a limited social battery, and has a tendency to overanalyze things. She’s quite friendly (and chaotic) when in her element, she’ll either be nearly dead silent or talk about some obscure ass video game lore for like three hours straight. She has a lot of ideas but she needs time to really put them together. Basically Imagine Charlie Day but as a teenage girl. She also stims but usually tries to stop herself.

7. Juno keeps a tape recorder and makes little logs, Peridot SU style. She also keeps around a little notebook and pen for writing down ideas. These range from detailed to “This probably made sense at the time”. Her handwriting is an uncanny valley between intricately legible and chicken scratch. Her tapes are more personal, and less coherent. They range from machine ideas, random thoughts, notes to self, ugly crying/sobbing, and disproportionately passionate rants.

8. Back at school, Juno was quite popular. Not Queen Bee level popular, but still popular. However, that was more to the fact that she was a straight A student, rich, and had a (Seemingly perfect) life. As a result, Juno ended up gravitating towards groups she shouldn’t really be hanging out with, usually popular cliques of mean kids who she would mostly follow around and do favors for, at worst, she was pretty much a verbal punching bag. (Think Amity Blight before her character development). Unfortunately, she grew comfortable with this being treated this way, and it further enabled her to snap at others and sabotage any meaningful relationships out of fear. Sure they were mean, but at least they were honest about it! They stung, but they didn’t try to hide their stingers with honey. If anything, they were better! She had money, and brains, and status! At worst, Juno would somewhat emulate them, but she never really tried directly hurt or help their victim of the week, just some snarky comments. Of course, she still felt terrible for it/ she was never a leader in any of those groups, she was a lackey, but she had more power than at home, and it was more of a mask than anything. In the motherlobe, she’s nowhere near Norma levels of bullying, but she still snaps at others (After quickly apologizing) and is still scared to take down her walls. Her terrible social life is more of an extension of her terrible home life.

9. Juno has a heavy dislike of gossip, she hears enough of it at her family’s company, parties, and school. It’s especially bad at school, since sometimes she’ll overhear others talking about her, she really does not want to be a part of that. (Think of “Turn it down” by OR30 but with gossip).

10. Juno watches sitcoms, and sometimes anime as a guilty pleasure. (Don’t worry, she’s not full on otaku, she’s not doomed yet).

11. Juno will sometimes listen to music while working. She prefers to listen to 3 types of music: Weird ass techno music in the vein of lemon demon, sonic the hedgehog, and occasionally rock. (In rhombus of ruin, her psyllirium cure song would probably be some sort of break up rock song about freedom. Think set it off meets MCR) basically her music tastes match literally every early 2000s middle schooler. (Look if psychonauts can have a early 2010s boy band in the 80s who’s to say they can’t have dollar store MCR?)
