The Best UK Surf Schools and Beaches to Learn to Surf

There are some really great surf schools in the UK based in some of the best surf locations the UK has to offer. Most of the best ones you’ll find are around the Devon and Cornwall area and there are a few options in Wales too.

The Surf Club Cornwall

This school is run by Nick Tiscoe who has been surfing for over 20 years and is a qualified Level 2 Surf Instructor. They run the surf school at Mawgan Porth Beach which is a good surf spot for beginners with right and left-hander waves. They offer a variety of lesson types which includes private one on ones and group sessions.

Price: £75 for private lesson, £80 for two people, £30 per person for a group of three or more

The Surf Sanctuary

Based at the Headland Hotel in Newquay, Cornwall. The Surf Sanctuary offers beginners surf classes and private lessons. They also offer stand-up paddle boarding lessons for quieter days as well. Best time to visit is in summer to catch the 1-4ft waves but if you are wanting more of a challenge and are more experienced then visit between autumn and spring to experience the 4-12ft swells.

Hunter Surf School, Woolacombe

They offer lessons and courses to suit all ages and abilities. The school is based on Woolacombe beach in Devon which I already recommended in a previous blog for beginner surfers due to its small wave sizes in summer. The instructors are all GB qualified and as well as showing you how to surf they also teach safety in the water and about the riptides for that specific beach area.

Price: £38 taster session, £50 taster session with equipment, £200 private family lesson (up to 7 members)

Croyde Surf Academy

Very friendly instructors with a guaranteed to get you standing attitude. Their head coach has worked with some of the best coaches in the UK and abroad. The school is run out of a blue double-decker bus that overlooks Croyde Bay in Devon. They teach all abilities and and also offer other activities too like coasteering.

Outer Reef Surf School

Based in Wales on the amazing Pembrokeshire coastline. This school is is run by professional surf coach Dean Gough who has coached Team GB. They run at weekends women’s surf and stand-up paddleboard breaks. The surf school caters for all ages and abilities. It was originally established in 1999 and has been running surf lessons and equipment hire ever since.

It’s better now, but I used to get mini panic attacks in the water.
