Maybe I just don't run in the right circles but I'm reading CS Lewis's autobiography, Surprised by Joy, and I can't believe I haven't heard more people talk about it. He says some things that were genuinely a bit shocking (in a good way) to hear a prominent Christian thinker and writer say in the 50s - at the very least, it's a master class in avoiding judgement, humility, and giving grace to other people who are struggling with their own lives and burdens. I didn't think it was possible for me to love Clive Staples more but it turns out it may have been!

In honour of C. S. Lewis’s birthday: a few of my favourite of his books, as interpreted by the “Dream by WOMBO” AI art app. Though it didn’t take much from me, I felt this was a fun way to view his works, and I quite like the results. ❤️
In order: The Chronicles of Narnia, Till We Have Faces, The Four Loves, Surprised By Joy, and lastly, two different interpretations of Perelandra, because the colours in each evoked different things within me and I couldn’t choose a favourite!
Happy Birthday, Jack. You never cease to inspire me.

"[T]he greatest service we can do to education to-day is to teach fewer subjects. No one has time to do more than a very few things well before he is twenty, and when we force a boy to be a mediocrity in a dozen subjects we destroy his standards, perhaps for life."

Surprised by Joy
- William Wordsworth
Surprised by joy—impatient as the Wind I turned to share the transport—Oh! with whom But Thee, long buried in the silent Tomb, That spot which no vicissitude can find? Love, faithful love, recalled thee to my mind— But how could I forget thee?—Through what power, Even for the least division of an hour, Have I been so beguiled as to be blind To my most grievous loss!—That thought’s return Was the worst pang that sorrow ever bore, Save one, one only, when I stood forlorn, Knowing my heart’s best treasure was no more; That neither present time, nor years unborn Could to my sight that heavenly face restore.

Waste of Time
I can hardly regret having escaped the appalling waste of time and spirit which would have been involved in reading the war news...
To read without military knowledge or good maps accounts of fighting which were distorted before they reached the Divisional general and further distorted before they left him and then “written up” out of all recognition by journalists, to strive to master what will be contradicted the next day, to fear and hope intensely on shaky evidence, is surely an ill use of the mind.
Even in peacetime I think those are very wrong who say that schoolboys should be encouraged to read the newspapers. Nearly all that a boy reads there in his teens will be known before he is twenty to have been false in emphasis and interpretation, if not in fact as well, and most of it will have lost all importance.
Most of what he remembers he will therefore have to unlearn; and he will probably have acquired an incurable taste for vulgarity and sensationalism and the fatal habit of fluttering from paragraph to paragraph to learn how an actress has been divorced in California, a train derailed in France, and quadruplets born in New Zealand.

Sometimes I hate all of this.
And sometimes? I can’t help but love all of this.
Some days all I see is darkness and I question it.
Other days I say contrast. How the shadows brighten the suns rays. I stare amazed, in awe of the light creating colors on the canvas of shadows.
Sometimes, my mind lies.
Tells dark riddles in the night.
Fear a lullaby, and hope an old wives tale. A fable.
“I have questions! I have faults! I see my own brokenness glaring at me, stalking me, planning my death and it’s revenge.” - I say
“Find answers then!” -they say
“Isn’t there a better answer?”- I plead
I need
Hope
I need to be surprised by joy.

reading CS Lewis' autobiography for the first time is a trip because you learn THINGS you didn't expect to learn; all I'm saying (and perhaps I'm stating what everyone knows already) is that a gen Z CS Lewis would have been writing explicit Loki fanfiction and getting into tumblr wars

Narnia, and the Danger of Becoming an Accidental Christian
"I don't think I ever really feel in danger of accidentally believing... or stumbling into it." Laura Miller
I’m listening to the Unbelievable? podcast replay of the discussion with Holly Ordway & Laura Miller: A convert and skeptic in Narnia. As always, I find the conversation on the Unbelievable! podcast intriguing and thought provoking, as the podcast usually engages people on opposite ends of the thought spectrum. Holly Ordway and Laura Miller had similar experiences in reading the Chronicles of…

I just want to say thank you for this page!! I discovered the Three Pines show in December and got the first book as a Christmas present. I’m now on book 11, having feverishly read books 5-10 in like ten days. SO intense; I hardly slept or ate because I honestly was infatuated with Jean-Guy’s character and I was so concerned for him. I’ve never been affected so much by a character.
While I’m disappointed the show ended, I now see that they were probably going to go in a different direction with Jean-Guy (did I detect some tenderness with Lacoste?) and I’m glad I have the books, my imagination, and Rossif Sutherland’s acting talent and his gorgeous face to keep my fantasies occupied.
From one obsessed fan to another, you have my deepest gratitude ♥️
Hello, there! Thank you so much for this lovely message. Same here, once I picked up the first book, I couldn't stop! It's such a great series and the characters are a little like family, aren't they? Louise Penny, unlike greedy "gods of television", won't let us down. I'm certain she'll write more novels for us to cherish.
*sigh* Amazon really messed the whole thing up. They could've had a hit, if only they'd noticed its potential. Oh well! Maybe someone else will try to adapt it in the future, but would we want another Jean-Guy or Armand? ;)
Again, thanks for dropping by <3

We are taught in the Prayer Book to 'give thanks to God for His great glory', as if we owed Him more thanks for being what He necessarily is than for any particular benefit He confers upon us; and so indeed we do and to know God is to know this. But I had been far from any such experience; I came far nearer to feeling this about the Norse gods whom I disbelieved in than I had ever done about the true God while I believed. Sometimes I can almost think that I was sent back to the false gods there to acquire some capacity for worship against the day when the true God should recall me to Himself.

Surprised by the Movie SURPRISED BY OXFORD
If you loved Carolyn Weber's book, I think you'll love the movie.
Carolyn (Caro) Weber’s very personal memoir, Surprised by Oxford, is one of my favorite books. I have read it at least twice, I’ve discussed in the book club I attend, and I’ve given it to members of my family. Imagine my delight when I noted the book had been made into a movie (2023) and was available on Hoopla at my cottage area library. While eager to watch the movie, I did wondered if I would…
