to anyone wanting to read about palestine / israel, i highly recommend mornings in jenin by susan abulhawa. i wrote my dissertation on this book. it has so many layers, it's so complex, and it's a really good novel if you're looking to develop a better understanding of the history between palestine and israel

We curated this feminist reading list as a resource for anyone seeking new feminist reading by Palestinian authors. Many Palestine-focused reading lists have been created, but we did not find one centering on feminism. In consultation with Palestinian authors and publishing professionals, we created a list of recently published books for adult readers in various genres. We were focused on including resources published within the past five years, although a few older essential reads are also included. This is not a comprehensive list by any means. We define feminist broadly, but as feminists who create syllabi and reading lists, we work in the context of many feminists overlooking Palestinian work entirely. We create this resource as an intervention of sorts, given the rising censorship and suppression of Palestinian authors and writers. Our intention is to create a resource for anyone seeking new reading, hosting feminist book clubs, or adding new options to their feminist course syllabi. The Problem of Susan Fic Recs

For many reasons, The Last Battle is probably the most contentious addition to the Narnia canon. The standout, though, has to be the infamous Problem of Susan, wherein the Pevensie children are all killed in a train crash and brought to Narnia 2 Electric Boogaloo aka heaven, then declare that Susan is no longer a friend of Narnia because of her interest in “lipsticks and nylons”. Hardly any time is spent on this, but the implications have been the ground for a lot of argument and discussion. What exactly would happen to Susan, and should it have happened? Over the years, dozens of fic writers have thrown their hats in the ring and weighed in on the subject, making the Problem of Susan almost a prism for the fandom: everyone shines through it a bit differently, resulting in a wide spectrum. Here’s some of the highlights under the cut.

Starting with the fic that coined the term, written by Neil Gaiman himself, this fic is a reflection and deconstruction of the idea that Susan would be able to find Narnia again by delving into the trauma that the experience of losing all her family at once as well as the social injustices that a young woman of her time would’ve faced, something that the narrative of The Last Battle never really addresses. It took off for a reason, as it presents a lot of good food for thought, but it’s also got some pretty weird shit that can feel like it’s conflating adulthood with edginess. Well worth a read for all the points it raises, but if you’re fond of canon you probably won’t like the way it takes a hammer to it.

Now this one is exactly what you’d want to read if you wanted some feel-good time. This story is probably the closest to how C S Lewis would’ve written Susan’s return to Narnia, detailing her rediscovering all the things she put away as well as what led up to her rejecting Narnia in the first place. It falls more to the end of being almost uncritical of canon, with the focus on Susan basically having the same sort of religious rediscovery that C S Lewis himself had in his life. Because of how she was treated in canon, that can be pretty frustrating, but the ending feels nothing short of joyous.

Swinging back to the other end of the spectrum, this fic is very critical of the idea of The Last Battle being a pretty happy ending for everyone, unambiguously stating that life is always worth living for all the Pevensie kids. It explores what their lives could’ve been like if they didn’t die, being a rebuttal of C S Lewis’ themes rather than a continuation of them while feeling equally as happy as the fic directly above.

And this story feels like a midway point between the above two. It dives really deep into the emotional damage that Susan would’ve suffered before and after the train crash in some absolutely gorgeous prose, showing both her and Aslan with great sympathy while maintaining that what happened to her is not a punishment in any way. Bittersweet and very, very good.

Heading back towards the more critical end of the spectrum, this fic presents a Susan who is not interested in finding Narnia again, only her family. She is very much a character straight out of an ancient myth rather than a teen trying to make sense of a senseless situation here, filled with determination as much as desperation. It’s probably the closest fic on here to having something close to a plot as well as a character study, with the exception of The Queen’s Return and one other:

Being a crossover with what’s pretty much the antithesis of the Chronicles of Narnia, His Dark Materials, it’s probably easy for you to guess which side of the spectrum this story falls on. It’s more of a HDM story than a Narnia one, but the two worlds blend together surprisingly well, and it gives us a rare look into a Susan who’s lived decades of her life when the story picks up. She’s pretty much the Professor and it is fascinating, as is everything left to interpretation by this gem of a fic that is ambiguous yet deeply satisfying.

¡And here’s Susan as a Doctor Who companion! This isn’t directly a Narnia story so much as it is one about two people much older than they look mourning the loss of their worlds, with a Susan who is a queen wise beyond her years. Reading it is like taking an ice shower. It doesn’t hold back on the grief, and as a result it manages to feel honest as it reaches a warm ending.

Despite also being a crossover, this is in some ways the opposite of touch the sky with two arms. Susan is more of an everyday young woman than a queen, and [SLIGHT SPOILERS] Narnia itself does feature directly. But y’know, that’s part of what makes fandom so interesting. Not everyone is going to have the same take on everything, and the ending of this leans more happy than melancholy.

¿A shipping fic that’s also a crossover with Peter Pan that features neither Neverland or Narnia? Yes, this one probably has the least to do with Narnia or Aslan, but it tells a very compelling story about living life and growing up, something that isn’t perfect but can be good if you find someone you want to spend your life with. Susan Pevensie and Wendy Darling are a really good couple, pinky promise.

Technically more a series of ensemble oneshots, but Susan features very prominently in a lot of them, and they will make you feel every feeling that everything else on this list might’ve given you. Satisfaction, devastation, simple joy, just go give it a shot.

Which books would the Hallowoods characters read?

Happy HFTH season 4 day! I'm so excited for the new episodes, and I want to celebrate by recommending some books I think some of the main characters would love.

Diggory Graves - Unwieldy Creatures

I have a feeling that Diggory might be interested in a nonbinary Frankenstein retelling...

Percy Reed - The Spirit Bares Its Teeth

A transmasc protagonist, ghosts, a t4t love story - Percy would relate to this book so much.

Nikignik - This Is How You Lose the Time War

Even aside from the whole Bigolas Dickolas thing, I think Nikignik would really love this book. It's an epic, complicated, super emotional love story, written in a way that almost feels like poetry - I have a feeling that Nikignik would like that.

Lady Ethel Mallory - Lady Susan

It's short, it's funny, it's a classic, it's from the perspective of the villain and said villain uses the title "lady"? Lady Ethel would love this book.

Riot Maidstone - Gideon the Ninth

It's about a butch lesbian with a sword. That alone would probably convince Riot to read it, but I think she would love the story, too.

Olivier Song - Infinity Alchemist

This book is about an alchemist who is rejected by the magic school he tried so hard to get into, and one of the love interests is genderfluid - Olivier might relate to it a little too much.

Clara Martin - The Grimoire of Grave Fates

It's a murder mystery set at a magic school that moves around the world, and it's told from 18 (!) different perspectives. I think Clara would love reading about all these different types of magic and trying to solve the mystery.

Polly - Good Omens

Polly reminds me so much of Crowley sometimes - to quote this post, they're both "demons sent on a celestial audit of earth and catching more feelings than they signed up for" - so Polly would probably either love or hate Good Omens, no in-between.

Yaretzi - The Salt Grows Heavy

I can't really explain why I think Yaretzi would like this book, but she would. Something about the main character being a murderous mermaid, probably.

Mort - All Systems Red

Mort would definitely want to be friends with Murderbot.

Hector Mendoza and Jonah Duckworth - Silver in the Wood

This is my go-to "Read this if you like Our Flag Means Death" book because the main characters remind me a lot of Stede and Ed, but the book also reminds me so much of Hector and Jonah, especially with the magical sentient forest setting.

Zelda Duckworth - The Remarkable Retirement of Edna Fisher

This book is about a 83-year-old Chosen One who has to save the world armed with nothing but gumption and knitting needles - I think Zelda would enjoy that.

Mx. Morrell - What Moves the Dead

I think a fungal horror book with a nonbinary protagonist would be perfect for Mx. Morrell.

Danielle O'Hara - Pet

Pet is about a trans girl who has to reconsider everything she's been taught and save her friend with the help of a terrifying creature - everyone should read this book, but I think Danielle would especially like it.

i don't usually post fic recommendations, but i'm currently rereading my favorite fic in the entire universe (not an understatement) and i thought hey, maybe i should share this so others can share my brainrot. here's its stats:

title & link: noble heart such as yours word/chapter count: 23,884. says 5/6 chapters, but most of it is in the first chapter, which is a big oneshot basically. the other chapters are little side stories in the universe. what it is: as weird as it sounds, this is a fic where dean thomas and harry potter become best friends with the twist that dean is the son of susan pevansie (yes, from the chronicles of narnia) and her two partners, claudia and abraham

when i tell y'all i cried three times reading this i am legit not joking. it's genuinely the best thing i've read on ao3 and i hope you all check it out and give it some love because it 100% deserves it.

Just finished Servilia and Her Family by Susan Treggiari!

Overall, I really liked it. I disagreed with parts of her portrayal of Caesar, and there were two small factual errors, but otherwise the book seems very solid. Treggiari is very good at distinguishing fact from speculation and educated guesses. She also provides a valuable corrective to sexist assumptions and stereotypes that color our views of Roman women. I felt like I learned not just about Servilia, but about many women and their experiences of the world.

Treggiari's genius lies in prosopography. She is excellent at tracing complex family connections, ties of marriage and friendship, and obscure political alliances. Honestly, I lost track of all the links she described, because they were so extensive and detailed. (It wasn't lack of clarity, it was just a lot of info.) In fact, I'd even recommend this book if you want to learn more about Brutus, Cassius, Cato the Younger, Marcus Livius Drusus, or any of their associates.

I think Treggiari also strikes an excellent balance between painting a clear picture of Servilia's personality and activities based on what we know, and not leaning too much on speculation. Treggiari is good at presenting multiple plausible explanations and telling you what we don't know. But her Servilia still comes across as a resourceful, intelligent, brave woman who was devoted to her family while still maintaining a life of her own.

This Servilia is far more than just Caesar's mistress or Brutus' mother. She is a respected social leader and a skilled political operator. She loves, she worries, she has a sharp tongue when she's angry, she doesn't tolerate any disrespect, she survives multiple civil wars and threats to her life. She's one of the few people who can intimidate Cato the Younger.

Anyway, very good book. Along with Skinner's Clodia Metelli and Schultz's Fulvia, I'm pleased to have another biography of a Roman woman to recommend.

If you enjoy romance and dog rescue this book is for you!

Brenda Malloy hates Christmas, but when the dog rescue she tirelessly volunteers for needs a second transport driver, she steps up to the plate. She has just enough time to help drive from Houston, TX to Avalon, NY and back before Christmas... only nothing goes as it was planned.

Enter a blinding snowstorm, an escaped rescue dog, and paramedic Adam Bellamy and Brenda's plans go out the window. This novel is about keeping the magic of the season, and Brenda finding herself along the way.

The narrator has a pleasant voice and the the novel moves along at a decent pace, creating an enjoyable listening experience. There are some curse words and some sexual situations, so this isn't a completely clean read, but it's a delightful story.
