DRIVING TO COUSINS WAS ALWAYS RELAXING.
it was so calming and the scenery was gorgeous.
steven was driving while molly sat in the passengers seat, belly behind her and laurel behind steven. can't do better by kim petras was booming through the speaker while belly sang her heart out with charismatic gestures to follow.
molly laughed quietly at her sisters loud singing. laurel couldn't help but laugh too when she started acting as if she was beating on a drum kit beside her. even steven's lips upturned slightly as she shouted "you can't do better," at the top of her lungs in key with the song.
"uh, can you guys turn it down a little?" laurel asked sweetly. "please."
steven agreed with a chuckle. "yes, please." he reached over and turned the dial slightly to lower the volume.
"thank you," she said. "i want you to be better about helping out this summer. like, don't just leave your dishes in the sink. load them into the dishwasher. and not just your own dish either, steven. i want you to be good houseguests."
"mom," he started. "susannah has people who clean, doesn't she?" he asked.
laurel reached forward and swatted him on the side of the head. "steven."
"ow!" he exclaimed, ducking away from her hand. molly and belly stiffled their laughs. "all right. all right. sorry."
laurel had always been weird about money. the fact that susannah had a lot and they didn't.
"just be considerate and act like i raised you right," she pleaded. "steven, that means don't stay out too late."
he immediately tipped his head back and rolled his eyes. "mom, i'm too old for a curfew!"
"wait, what about me? i don't have a curfew either, right?" belly asked hopefully.
steven laughed. "what do you need a curfew for?" he teased. "you don't go anywhere."
"don't be a jackass, steven," laurel chimed in.
"what?" he laughed again.
laurel sighed. "belly, we'll talk about it when something comes up."
"and what about molly?" steven asked. "she can come to parties with me and jere now, right mom?"
she looked out the window and thought for a minute. "as long as you're not out too late, and you guys all stick together."
he held his hand up to his younger sister who immediately smiled and high fived him.
belly simply rolled her eyes. "oh, and don't forget, you promised you'd take me driving," she said to her brother.
laurel turned to look at her. "belly, i told you i'd take you," she said.
"yeah, but you're too judgy," she said awkwardly.
"excuse me?" asked as the other two laughed.
belly his her head in her hand and smiled. "yes, i'm sorry."
while the laughter died down, steven pulled into a gas station and parked the car next to a pump. the girls all got out and headed inside, molly and belly immediately heading for the candy and chip aisle.
belly quickly opened up a bag of cheetos before stuffing a few into her mouth. feeling some eyes on them, they both turned to the right, seeing the cashier staring. "hey," he said nonchalantly.
molly made a disgusted face and grabbed her younger sisters hand then pulled her away and further into the aisle. belly held her bag of chips close to her while molly grabbed a bag of sour patch kids and a pack of air head extremes for their brother.
they headed over to the fridges that contained the drinks and each grabbed a cherry coke, molly grabbing another for steven. then unfortunately, they made their way to the counter with the creepy cashier.
"are you two new this summer?" he asked them, looking both up and down not so secretively.
belly looked around to assure he was speaking to them and chuckled. "uh, us? no."
"really?" he hummed. "thought i knew every pretty girl in cousins." and while the youngest conklin smiled and looked down as a pink blush painted her cheeks, molly simple rolled her eyes and looked around for laurel. "comin' to the bonfire tonight? first of the season."
"uh, maybe," belly nodded. her sister looked to her and raised an eyebrow.
he smiled. "come. i'll introduce you to some of my friends."
"maybe i will," she smiled.
thankfully to molly's luck, laurel had appeared by her side. "after we get settled, do you girls want to go to whale of a tale with me so i can pre-sign stock before the signing tomorrow night?"
"uh.." belly's face began to turn red in embarrassment.
laurel smiled as she reminisced. "remember how you girls used to sit on my lap when i did signings there?" she asked, twirling with molly's long curly locs. "you two insisted on drawing little whales on every book i signed."
the youngest shook her head. "no, i—i don't remember that," she chuckled.
the cashier held out the card to belly, which was swiped away by her mother. "i'll take that. thank you," she grabbed the card before turning back to the girls. "i'll make you a deal. i'll let you guys pick out tonights dessert if you come with me and keep me company," she said as she headed towards the door.
"i'll see you later," the man said as belly walked towards the door laurel was holding open.
"what's later?" she asked her youngest.
belly stepped out in embarrassment and headed towards the car. "nothing."
once they were all seated in the car, molly handed steven his snacks and he slipped a few sour strings into his mouth before turning the key and starting the drive to the house.
and seeing that 'entering cousins beach' sign held a feeling like no other. they truly felt at home there. and it was so, so great to be back.
but pulling into the driveway made the two girls anxious. they looked a lot different then they did the last time they were here. and a lot had changed too.
steven turned the car off and grabbed the keys, honking twice with a smile for what was to come. and almost immediately, the door was opening with a very excited jeremiah fisher. "what's up?" he asked happily as he ran out to hug laurel, who was the first out of the car.
"hi. oh my god," she smiled as she approached him with arms open.
he jogged up with his signature smile. "hello." he bent down and wrapped his arms around her, lightly swaying her from side to side. "long time no see."
"good to see you," she replied as she let go and went to hug his mom. susannah, like her som, jogged over to her best friend and embraced her.
steven and jeremiah were hugging it out behind them while belly got out quickly and stood up, waiting for him to notice her. and when he did, he was all smiles again. "look who came back all grown up," he said, walking towards her. she wrapped her arms around his neck while his went around her middle as he swayed them back and forth.
molly could feel her heart pounding in her chest. she missed her best friends more than anything, and now she was finally here with them. she got out the car just as the two let go, them uttering something to each other then laughing.
he turned around and she could immediately see the familiar glint in his eye return. he didn't even need to say anything. he was smiling harder than ever as he charged toward her and lifted her with ease. she squealed when he picked her up and laughed as he spun the two around in circles. "god, i missed you so much," he mumbled against her hair. "hows my girl been?"
"i missed you too jere," she laughed at his typical flirting and ignored the other question. "now put me down." he placed her on the ground, arms still wrapped around her, holding her close.

tagged by @chiropteracupola like a month ago at this point ;_; thank you, and here it is now.
rules: list ten books that have stayed with you in some way, don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard - they don’t have to be the “right” or “great” works, just the ones that have touched you.
Leviathan series by Scott Westerfeld
The first alternate history books I ever read; also, crossdressing girlboy soldier Deryn Sharp was a big deal to me when I was in middle school.
2. Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susannah Clarke
This is one I have to go back periodically and reread every year or two-- one of my favorite books. Best Regency-era fiction and best eerie fantasy at the same time.
3. Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg
Every time I read Stone Butch Blues I tell myself I will not cry. Then I cry.
4. The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin
I love Le Guin, and this is one of my favorites of hers. In true nerd fashion I read passages from this book to document my voice changing.
5. Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer
Weird science fiction, and not in my usual area, but something about the writing and concept of this book really grabbed me by the throat. This story was maybe the one that got me into horror.
6. Life Mask by Emma Donoghue
I only read this book a few months ago but I think it will be a favorite for a long time. I love historical fiction that is obviously written by someone who wrote their thesis on the subject, and the highly detailed late 18th century British political history + lesbianism really gets me.
7. Fairyland series by Catherynne Valente
These books probably influenced the way that I think about fantasy and magic and imagery in writing forever.
8. The Years of Rice and Salt by Kim Stanley Robinson
Alternate history that makes me emotional about real history.
9. The Evening and the Morning and the Night by Octavia Butler
Short story, not a book, but every time I read it I have to sit down and stare at a wall for a little while. Octavia Butler is really good at getting horrific things across in as few words as possible.
10. Doomsday Book by Connie Willis
Time travel fiction about academic jockeying at Oxford, humanity, and the Black Plague, which looking back I read before the pandemic?? Maybe I need to read it again so it can get me even harder.
tagging @sailorpants, @sanguinarysanguinity, @jellosaladseance, @gilliagandy, and anyone else who wants to share!

Charade (Stanley Donen, 1963)
Cast: Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau, James Coburn, George Kennedy, Ned Glass, Dominique Minot, Jacques Marin. Screenplay: Peter Stone, Marc Behm. Cinematography: Charles Lang. Art direction: Jean d'Eaubonne. Film editing: Jim Clark. Music: Henry Mancini. Charade was dismissed in its day as a pleasant but derivative entertainment, with touches of Hitchcock and a bit of James Bond in the mix, a film that would be nothing without its star teaming of Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant. It would also inspire other star-teamed romantic adventures with one-word titles, like Warren Beatty and Susannah York in Kaleidoscope (Jack Smight, 1966) and Shirley MacLaine and Michael Caine in Gambit (Ronald Neame, 1966), and Charade's director, Stanley Donen, would even repeat the formula with Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren in Arabesque (1966). But Charade has survived today as a classic when the others have mostly been forgotten. The star teaming has a lot to do with it, of course: Who doesn't want to see the two most charming people in the world together? Owing to Grant's genetic gift for looking much younger than he was, even the 25-year age difference between Grant and Hepburn only slightly tests the limits of what one can accept in a romantic pairing.* But the film also makes sly references to the difference in their ages, and wisely makes Hepburn's character into the more active one in initiating a relationship. Charade also has an exceptionally witty screenplay, with Peter Stone largely responsible for the final script from the story he and Mark Behm had been unable to sell to the studios until they turned it into a novel that was serialized in Redbook magazine. It has a near-perfect supporting cast, including three actors at turning points in their careers: Walter Matthau, James Coburn, and George Kennedy. All of them would move out of television and into the movies after Charade, and all three would win Oscars for their work. And in  Donen it had a director whose lightness of touch had been honed in MGM musicals, including the greatest of them all, Singin' in the Rain (1952).
*Compare, for example, the similar age gap between James Stewart and Kim Novak in Bell, Book and Candle (Richard Quine, 1958). After that film, Stewart gave up playing romantic leads. Grant made much the same choice: Charade was his antepenultimate film: Although he would make one more, Father Goose (Ralph Nelson, 1964), that paired him with a younger actress, Leslie Caron, in his final film, Walk, Don't Run (Charles Walters, 1966), he was the older man who serves as matchmaker to young lovers -- a role that was based on the part played by Charles Coburn in The More the Merrier (George Stevens, 1943).

CONSEGUIMOS A SUPERCONDUTIVIDADE EM TEMPERATURA AMBIENTE? CALMA!!!
Thompson-Bullock House
State Route 221 West
Georgetown, Ohio
The Thompson-Bullock House, also known as the Thompson-Klosterman House, a white Greek Revival home, sits majestically at the top of a hill in Pleasant Township, Brown County, west of Georgetown, OH, overlooking White Oak Valley: the property is surrounded by White Oak Creek on three sides. Welcoming guests and family since its construction c. 1852, White Hall, as it is now called, has undergone a seven-year restoration by the current owners, Judy and Ken Klosterman of Cincinnati and the Klosterman Baking Company. White Hall was constructed by John Thompson, the youngest son of Edward and Susannah Thompson. According to local history, the property was given to John Thompson in 1843 by his parents. Two other brothers, James, the oldest, and William also received property from their parents in the same year.
Each of the sons built a home and mill on their lands which are located along Ohio 221; today only two of the homes remain. The history of White Hall after John Thompson includes ownership by a family named Anderson. Then in later years, it was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bullock, who operated a well-known antique store on the property. Always referred to as “Mrs. Bullock,” Virginia Bullock’s antique store drew people from across the area and customers knew when the gate was open, the shop was open; when the gate was closed, the shop was closed
After Mrs. Bullock’s death in the late 1990s, the property passed to her sister. A pending sale fell through, presenting the opportunity in 2000 for Judy and Ken, who were familiar with the Georgetown area, already owning a farm on Ohio 505, to consider buying the 91 acre estate. Today, as one approaches the home with its four Doric columns, it is hard to tell the new western second-level, kitchen, back porch and basement level terrace are not original to the home.
Accentuated by a staircase in the main foyer that winds its way to the third floor, the interior has been meticulously restored and is painted in a soft white throughout the formal living and dining areas and bedrooms. Wherever possible, the original woodwork has been restored and if some pieces couldn’t be salvaged, the millwork of the new pieces blends perfectly with the old. The chestnut floor was damaged and replaced in many areas, but Judy and Ken saved enough pieces to use in the two-story library addition.
The staircase in the library connects to the master suite and was salvaged from a home on Milton Street in Cincinnati, where their daughter Kim once lived. The staircase dates to 1860. Four bedrooms are located on the second floor, each with a private bath or a Jack-and-Jill bath. The third floor has one bedroom and bath, which would have been a maid’s quarters and a large attic space that Ken has converted to house his magic collection.
The “keeping room” where Mrs. Bullock held her salons has been stripped to the brick walls and the drop ceiling removed to expose the timber supports. The room is an early addition to the home, with the exact date unknown. It serves as a cozy family room, with antique chairs and benches, comfortable furniture and a large fireplace. From the keeping room, visitors move through an entryway to the new kitchen addition. The walls are again exposed brick, and unique antique pieces are blended with modern day cabinets, creating a sense the kitchen has always been part of the home. Standing on the back porch, the roar of White Oak Creek can be heard, as it forms a horseshoe around the property. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 23, 1978.

Walter Matthau and Audrey Hepburn in Charade (Stanley Donen, 1963) Cast: Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau, James Coburn, George Kennedy, Ned Glass, Dominique Minot, Jacques Marin. Screenplay: Peter Stone, Marc Behm. Cinematography: Charles Lang. Art direction: Jean d'Eaubonne. And it has a near-perfect supporting cast, including three actors at turning points in their careers: Walter Matthau, James Coburn, and George Kennedy. All of them would move out of television and into the movies after Charade, and all three would win Oscars for their work. And in Stanley Donen it had a director whose lightness of touch had been honed in MGM musicals, including the greatest of them all, Singin' in the Rain (1952).
