Seeing characters in romance stories just jetting between countries at a moment's notice with no thought for visa; seeing airports as sites of triumphant climaxes and romantic denouements instead of places of fear and danger where a sword hangs above your head— it all breaks off little pieces of my heart. They're constant reminders that my people will never be human enough in the colonial world order to be allowed to move freely around it. No matter what your race, those non-refugees living in the Global North will never understand what it's like to be part of a global ghetto where your passport is nothing but a trembling supplication and humiliation.

Suspended Bridges by foresthearts
Word count: 243,553 (complete) / 35/35 Rating: M Trigger and content warnings: A/B/O
Summary: “Steve really needed to get his stupid thing he had with Munson under control. He struggled to find a word for it. It was like an anti-crush or something. The same awareness and panic that a crush brought, but not because he had feelings for the guy. Because of the opposite. Because any time he saw Munson, his heart kicked up in fear, his breathing got shallow, his whole body started to warm. Munson made him want to turn heel and run.”
In which Steve has the opposite of the suspended bridge effect.
(Featuring omega!Steve pretending to be an alpha and alpha!Eddie silently losing his mind.)

Hi! Just a heads up if anyone is a fan of my fanfic Suspended Bridges—I am currently working on editing part 3 of the fic and as I do so I’m realizing I need to change some big-ish things. The resolution is the same but there will be some minor plot changes. If anyone is attached to the current version, feel free to download it—I’m thinking I’ll end up putting up a new, rewritten version end of this week or the week after.
Thanks!! Let me know if y’all have any questions!

HERE IT IS HERE WE GO
FAI VS KUROGANE
BATTLE OF THE CENTURY
The only thing on the line is THEIR HEARTS
What I really want to do here is just intersplice the translation notes we have from @giniroangou to really hammer home all the little subtleties that got lost in the official translation. They bring a lot to light and really clarify more than I could add on my own. For instance:

It's rare
Suspended on a bridge
Green Snake leaves
珍しや
橋に吊るさる
葛の葉や
This plant is native to Japan, but is vigorous and feared in the USA.

I am once again thinking abt how that new dune movie expected me to believe that timmathew charlemagne is the biological offspring of Oscar Isaac as though that were in any way plausible

weird thing about grieving a character's death is that the process is distinctly nonlinear. Grief in general operates in loops rather than lines, but the limitations of human memory contain person-grief to a cycle. It starts and stops and skips and, whether you want it to or not, tends to fade with time. Character grief is entirely unmoored. It's disconnected from human perceptions of time altogether.
Characters can't die. They never lived. You can't kill them. Technically, a character is a tool. It represents themes and images and carries (or drops, or transforms) them through the narrative.
Characters aren't human but they can get frighteningly close to it. If you bond with a character, they become more of a person to you. Hence why representation of marginalized identities in media matters.
But a character becoming a person doesn't negate the fact that they're still a tool. Sometimes the story breaks them. And the grief you feel over this shattered tool is legitimate. It hurts because characters are people and stories are real! Not quite, but almost.
And then you get to the real weird stuff: revisiting that media where your favorite tool dies. You see their face and hear their laugh and you miss them before they're gone. The grief can feel totally fresh. There's no memory buffer. You can experience that death again and again and again.
