Best Sport for Introverted Kids
Tumblr media
In the photo above you can see a group of kids aged from 7 to 11, along with 3 instructors.
At the far right you can see Rodney, the head coach at Southern Cross Jiu-Jitsu Academy. His story is one in which he is passionately trying to replicate in all the others.
At 12 years old he started high school at Newington College. Which in 1990s was a school of over 200 boys per year, and when they were lined up from tallest to shortest for the Year 7 photo, there were only one or two kids smaller than he.
Given Newington's proud history with rugby (Phil Kearns and Nick Farr-Jones being two recent ex-alumni Wallaby captains), Rodney was keen to be part of the team.
But he wasn't. Instead he was pushed around and belittled due to his speech and size.
So with rugby not working out, he enrolled at Southern Cross Goshin Ryu Ju-Jutsu in Sylvania Heights. There he was taken under the wing of sensei Gordon Griffiths, someone would guide and mentor Rodney even to this day.
Over the next 6 years Rodney competed in many martial arts tournaments, and lost them ALL in the very first round. But Gordon knew how to keep him believing in himself.
Fast forward to 2009 to when Rodney won all the major amateur and professional grappling tournaments in Australasia at the highest levels - Pan Pacific BJJ, Abu Dhabi Pro Gi and the ADCC Submission Fighting < 77kg division.
Back to this photo, there are few kids in the almost identical situation - they tried playing footy (rugby and/or league) and were constantly being beaten up. So now they're loving training jiu-jitsu - a contact sport where they're getting their physical contact, but in a far safer environment. An environment which is long-term and will yield far greater results.

Beast of the Charred Forests | Scottish Folklore
Tumblr media
This one has many names. Sometimes, it is called the Beast of the Charred Forests, other times Dhu Guisch, or The Beast, or The Dragon. They all involve the same story, though, so I decided to join them.
In the stories, there is a great winged serpent that breaths a fire so hot, that whole forests are reduced to charred remains. In fact, some say that this creature burnt down every forest in Scotland.
“It lived in fire, and its breath burnt all the forests of the Highlands…” The Folk-lore Journal, Volume 6; Volume 21: The Folk-Lore Of Sutherlandshire (Pg232)  by Miss Dempster
In other stories, it was only the forests Southerland.
“In Sutherland the destruction of the ancient forests is laid to the charge of a fierce and powerful monster, which roamed over the north of Scotland, breathing fire wheresoever he went. As proof of this, the more elderly inhabitants point yet to the charred stumps of pine-trees embedded in the peat-mosses. The entire populace fled for safety whenever the monster was reported to be stalking the land. Lie came to be known among the folks of Sutherland as the Beast of the Charred Forests.” “The peat-fire flame : folk-tales and traditions of the Highlands & Islands” by Alasdair Alpin MacGregor (1937)
Tumblr media
Eventually, the dragon flew to Dornoch and yelled down “Pity of you, Dornoch.”
A man named St. Gilbert took up a bow, yelled “Pity of you!” and killed the beast as it flew overhead with a single arrow.
“Pity of you, Dornoch!” roared the dragon.“ Pity of you, Dornoch!” said St. Gilbert; and taking with him five long and sharp arrows, and a little lad to carry then, he went out to meet the “Beast.” When he came over against it he said, “Pity of you!” and drew his bow. “ The Folk-lore Journal, Volume 6; Volume 21: The Folk-Lore Of Sutherlandshire (Pg169)  by Miss Dempster
The dragon is said to be buried under “the beasts stone” which is between Dornoch and Skibo. I have made a Scottish Folklore map with the suspected location here.
“Now, the towns-folk buried it under a large stone situated on the moor between Dornoch and Skibo, and known traditionally as the Beast’s Stone. And, until a few years ago, it was quite usual for the folks of this neighbourhood to compute local directions and distances in relation to their being in such and such a direction and so many yards or miles from the Beast’s Stone.” “The peat-fire flame : folk-tales and traditions of the Highlands & Islands” by Alasdair Alpin MacGregor (1937)

Orkneyinga Saga (excerpt)
a Viking text telling of King Hakon’s death
The fleets which now consisted of more than a hundred vessels, for the most part large and all well equipped, was divided into two squadrons, one of which, consisting of fifty ships, plundered the coasts of Kintyre and Mull, rejoining King Hakon at Gigha. A detatched squadron now plundered Bute, and the fleet cast anchor in Arran Sound, from which King Hakon sent Gilbert, Bishop of Hamar, and Heniy, Bishop of Orkney, with three other envoys, to treat for peace with the Scottish King. The negotiations failed, and soon after the fleet was disabled by a storm, and the power of the Norwegian King utterly broken in the battle of Largs. King Hakon, gather- ing together the shattered remnants of his fleet and army, retired slowly northwards, meeting with no impediment until they arrived off Durness, in Sutherlandshire, when the wind fell calm, and the fleet steered into the sound, where seven men of a boat’s crew, who had been sent ashore for water, were killed by the Scots. In passing through the Pentland Firth one vessel went down with all on board in the  Swelkie, a dangerous whirlpool in certain states of the tide, and another was carried by the current helplessly through the Firth, and made straight for Norway. King Hakon laid up his fleet in Midland Harbour and Scapa Bay. He then rode to Kirkwall, and lay down to die. He was lodged in the bishop’s palace, and after having been confined to his bed for some days, he recovered so much that he attended mass in the bishop’s chapel, and walked to the cathedral to visit the shrine of St Magnus. But there came a relapse, and he was again laid prostrate. He caused the Bible and Latin books to be read to him to beguile the tedium of the sick bed, until he was no longer able to bear the fatigue of reflecting on what he heard ; and then he desired that Norwegian books should be read to him night and day — first the Sagas of the Saints, and then the Chronicles of the Kings, from Halfdan the Black through all the succession of the Bangs of Norway.
Then he set his affairs in order, caused his silver plate to be weighed out to pay his troops, and received the sacrament. He died at midnight on Saturday, 15th December 1263. On Sunday the corpse, clothed in the richest garments, with a garland on the head, was laid in state in the upper hall of the palace. The king’s chamberlains stood round it with tapers, and all day long the people came to view the remains of their king. The nobles kept watch over the bier through the night ; and on Monday the royal remains were borne to St. Magnus’ Cathedral, where they lay in state all that night. On Tuesday they were temporarily interred in the choir of the church, near the steps leading to the shrine of St. Magnus. Before his death the king had given directions
that his body should be carried east to Norway, and buried beside the remains of his father and his relatives in Bergen. In the month of March the corpse was exhumed and conveyed to Scapa, where it was placed on board the great ship in which he had sailed on the unfortunate expedition to Largs, and taken to Bergen, where it was interred in the choir of Christ’s Church.

Back to Week 1
Today (Monday) we are back to week one of  the Foundation curriculum.
16 weeks ago, when this last happened (we’ve  had a few short holiday weeks in there), someone came to me and told me he was committing to 3 classes a week  for the entire thing. Well, I think he was sick for one week  (the flu that went around about a month ago), but apart from that, he was  right. I won’t mention his name, but he has been in all of the “top dozen”  lists that I’ve posted since then.
This week in the foundation classes we’ll be  covering how to survive, then escape, from the major pins, which is essential  for newbies - learning to be comfortable being uncomfortable.
And in my classes I’ll be showing escapes  which I expect all brown and black belts to know (think of the omoplata  escape we did a few weeks back), and practise (you’ll often see me letting  people mount and triangle me).
Are you up to the challenge for doing  this? 3 times a week, for 14 weeks? The first month will be the hardest,  during the coldest, darkest time of the year, but each week will get easier  as it becomes a habit!
Coach Rodney
ps. Last week before kids & teens grading week  ... hope to see them all here tomorrow and Thursday!

Beast of the Charred Forests
Variations: The Beast, Dhu Guisch (“Of the Black Firs”)
“Tradition holds that the dense, impenetrable forests of Scotland once covered most of the Highlands and Outer Hebrides, but fell to the Norsemen. The Scandinavians burned down the forests to dominate the trade in timber, and to prevent potential ambushes from forested areas. In Sutherland the destruction of the forests is attributed to a dragon, the Beast of the Charred Forests. This terrifying, powerful monster was born from a fire that burned for seven years and lived in fire. It once stalked over northern Scotland, breathing fire and incinerating trees. There was no escaping its wrath, and people would abandon their villages to the dragon whenever they heard it was near. Only a man who saw it before it saw him could slay it.
But the Beast itself met its match in Saint Gilbert. When it came upon St. Gilbert’s Church in Dornoch, it roared “Pity on you, Dornoch!” Saint Gilbert, who had previously dug a hole and hid in it to see the dragon before it appeared, emerged from his church armed with a bow and arrows, and repeated the Beast’s boastful statement to its face. “Pity on you, Dornoch!” The beast prepared to breathe fire on Dornoch, but the Saint’s first arrow pierced and killed it immediately. It was buried on the moor between Dornoch and Skibo, and a stone – the Beast’s Stone – was placed over it.The presence of charred pine stumps in the peat moss of Ross, Sutherland, and the Reay is evidence of the Beast’s ravages.”
