About two weeks until school starts 😶 Since I’m coming into to new position, I’ve been playing around with fun ideas of how to teach musical literacy. And with the over abundance of colored tissue paper I have from preschool craft, decided on a weekly Decoding Tunes game/challenge for my classroom. Check out my story for the 15 weeks I’ve prepped so far🎶 It is really important to teach music student to be active in their engagement with music. Standard western notation can be a lot to process for the majority of our students. Listening and imitation can help a lot with supporting these students; in my case, these the older students have a need to develop a strong foundation in music reading in preparing for high school and pre-college music making. Most importantly, although there is a “correct” answer for all of these, I am encouraging my students to be able to defend their own correct answers because after all their is a finite amount of ways to organize ‘traditional’ pitches and rhythms. Excited to be teaching my first live #suzukigroup class @levine_music since the pandemic restrictions began last spring! Our #youngmusicians enjoy the challenge game. Each #youngviolinist randomly chooses a piece they can play well and performs it according to a randomly chosen challenge. I adapted this idea from a @twosetviolin video which featured Hilary Hahn @violincase performing a Paganini Caprice while hula hooping! (Definitely look this up on YouTube!) We don’t hula hoop in my class but we have many fun and educational challenges to choose from. Three videos: 1) Choose your piece. Today’s winner is #waltz by #johannesbrahms ~swipe left~ 2) Choose your challenge! Play the piece with the opposite bowings! ~swipe left~ 3) Perform for the class! Depending on the child and the combination of piece and challenge, if I see a child struggling I may simply do the challenge myself (and include some funny mistakes), or have the child choose a different challenge, or do it all together as a group. In my experience the favorite challenge is “lie on your back while playing!” Note: I am using #decidenow , which is a free app for creating your own custom spin wheels! Children enjoy pushing buttons as well as opportunities to “game-ify” practice. Letting children choose their piece and challenge gives them a feeling of ownership of the practice process. #dailypractice is a non-negotiable part of #violinlearning One of my dedicated #suzukiviolinmethod families at @levine_music sent me a picture of a roadside #violinpractice while on vacation in #shenandoahnationalpark Families who practice daily will be more confident in their playing and enjoy practicing and playing more. Each day skipped, “eats” a day of your hard work resulting in regression of skill and motivation. Every day skipped on a regular basis results in 2 months lost for every year. If a family practices 6 days a week they will loose 52 days, which is almost two months. Add to that some sick days and two or three weeks of vacation with no practice and hardworking families may unknowingly be skipping 3 or 4 months of practice yearly! It’s the job of the #violinteacher to communicate this and follow up with families at weekly lessons. #practiceviolin daily, 7 days per week, including lesson days! Parents are accountable for practice when children are young and pre-teen. It’s actually easier for families to practice daily rather than 5 or 6 days per week if they establish the habit early. Recently enjoyed #tenetmovie the most recent film from director #christophernolan The film explores the idea of objects moving forwards and backwards in time. #jsbach explored this idea musically in his #crabcanon from #musicaloffering in which the music is played forwards and backwards simultaneously! Needless to say, this is an incredible compositional technique which #bach accomplishes effortlessly! The #retrograde motion is extremely difficult to hear so I recorded each part separately as well as together. If you have trouble hearing this motion, listen to the beginning and ends of each part. Advanced Twinkles from a recent #suzukiviolin #groupclass #violinconcert As a grand finale, our #youngviolinists performed #twinkletwinklelittlestar in multiple keys and multiple rhythms. The key and rhythm assignments were decided on stage by the performers just seconds before the performance, so the exact assignments were not rehearsed ahead of time! We enjoy these transposition and rhythm games in our weekly #violinclasses Games like this encourage curiosity and keep us “on our toes” with listening closely to each other because we don’t know exactly how it’s going to sound ahead of time! I find a #rubberband helps #youngviolinists with #bowdistribution in some pieces. The #upbowstaccato in the #trio of #minueting by #beethoven is easiest when played almost entirely in the middle of the #violinbow The series of 4 up bows per measure often take #youngmusicians to the frog where this bow stroke is difficult to control. Placing a rubber band approximately 1/3 up from the frog is a wonderful #kinestheticlearning activity to train bow allocation. After bumping into the rubber band a few times, children will learn to manage the up bows in order to avoid collision! Two videos: 1) #minuetingmajor trio practice with rubber band. ~swipe left~ 2) Performance version. Advanced students may begin including off the string strokes for some or all of the up bow #staccati however I teach on the string in the middle of the bow when first learning this piece. Additionally, I teach with only a slight #ritardando toward the end (last repeat only) and no ritard at any of the repeats or anywhere else. Amended #violinpractice🎻 post! I inadvertently forgot to add the third #violinperformance version video to this morning’s post discussing the challenging triplet passage in mm 133-152 of #violinconcerto in #aminor by J.B. Accolay. This passage contains a tricky bowing pattern as well as many string crossings. Here’s how I practice and present this passage in my lessons: Three videos: 1) First I practice the slur pattern using a customized version of #perpetualmotion by #shinichisuzuki from #suzukiviolinmethod I modify this piece to create a 6/8 meter in which I can practice the bowing pattern, making sure to accent slightly and vibrate the main beats. I also change the key to A minor. Any etude will do, but I like to keep things simple so I can focus on the bowing right away without having to learn a new piece. Students who regularly review Suzuki repertoire will be able to learn this version in a few practice sessions, if not after a few minutes. ~swipe left~ 2) String crossings - there are many “drops” to the E string, usually for a repeated open E. It is essential that the entire arm drop to the E string even though this passage is fast. This ensures the best control and tone quality throughout. I announce the string crossings out loud as follows: “Drop” - arm drops to E string “Reach” - hand reaches to a lower string. Notice how it’s just my hand. My forearm doesn’t go up to the lower string. Announcing the string crossings out loud engages more of the brain and makes the practice more thoughtful and powerful. It also slows students down so they think about what they’re doing! ~swipe left~ 3) Performance version - The bowing and string crossing patterns are organized. Tone is pure on all strings. #practicingviolin #concertoinaminor by #antoniovivaldi #3rdmovement #presto mm 75-91 #metronomepractice suggestion: 3 videos: 1) Set metronome at moderate tempo, play one measure at a time, waiting a full measure (two clicks) between measures. 2) Same or slightly faster tempo, now with one beat (1 click) between each measure 3) Performance version. Practicing in this manner does several things: 1) Keeps the brain engaged and allows the brain to “catch up” during the intervening rests so the fingers won’t be practicing stumbling into each note. 2) Improves steadiness - hearing the clicks between each measure gives the student a chance to reset the tempo if any rushing has occurred. 3) Improves stumble recovery during performance - Students who practice like this are building in multiple starting points so if they happen to stumble in a performance recovery will be swift. Student who only practice from beginning to end will have trouble recovering from stumbles. Practice tips: Many children will struggle with the interruptions at first. Help them by prompting “wait, wait” during the resting clicks.
