Thank you for the link anon, I think everyone needs to read this & what else is on the Instagram page.
But incase you don’t want to read it, this account is addressing millie o’connell’s cultural appropriation (both in svn and before) and her lack of apology or recognition of it. This page addresses aimie too. (I did make a post a while ago about asian cultural appropriation with the qipao millie was wearing but not about the other things incorporated in the post.)
Now I am not a poc so it’s not for me to preach about how this affects those cultures, but it is important to actually acknowledge this. Many fans of svn and millie have straight-up not brought this up/continue to argue they haven’t done anything wrong when they clearly fucking have. This is my opinion and someone please call me out if I’m out of line, but you’re allowed to like a person and their music while simultaneously wanting them to be held accountable for their actions. I’m incredibly disappointed in these women who have continued to do these things and they haven’t even apologized. I understand it’s hard to look at people you idolize and like with criticism, but it's more important to realize what they’ve done is wrong. Just because they haven’t apologized for it doesn’t mean it's not worth an apology.
Truthfully, I have no idea why they haven’t said anything, maybe they think it's too late or it doesn’t matter (both are incorrect) but I really hope they do bring this to light and have a legitimate apology. Perhaps they really were ignorant about it and didn’t understand it was wrong, but that doesn’t excuse why they haven’t apologized for it, especially after so many people have brought it up to them. These things need to be addressed and it’s better late than never because leaving it out there is hurting other people.
(A reminder that you should never cancel people, this isn’t a call for cancellation or bullying or for people to go around insulting them because it solves absolutely nothing. Canceling people is toxic, calling for accountability is vital, and no they are not the same thing.)
I’m sorry to anyone who’s seen my post about how pretty I think millie and the members of svn are and thought it was me supporting their actions because I absolutely don’t. I am sorry, and I will be more aware of that in the future. I also wasn’t aware of their (millie & aimie) darkened skin tones in one of the svn photoshoots, I assumed it was the lighting, but that is my ignorance and I am so sorry.
Again, I am not a poc so i have no right to say how poc should feel about this, but I didn’t want to post this anon without an explanation. Thanks for reading. Please other people feel free to add on, this is a conversation that people aren’t having enough of.
