SVT HHU - Orange Peel Theory // Drabble

orange peel theory is making it's rounds on local tiktok and twitter. this is my humorous take on how the HIP HOP UNIT discuss/deal with the orange peel theory with their significant others.

"would you peel this for me?" she placed a tangerine on his desk – not caring if he was in the middle of playing his video games.

without having to ask twice, seungcheol hid his character behind a container, away from his opponents shots and reached for the fruit. "cover me, wonwoo." he mumbled into the mic, peeling the citrus with ease. "just one?"

standing from his seat, he made his way to the bag of cuties they had purchased at the store – peeling two more.

"that's enough." she laughed, stopping him from peeling a third one.

wonwoo's head tilted to the side, puzzled by the point she was trying to make. "why would it be hypothetical? you asked meaning you want it. it's okay i can get–"

"baby it's a tiktok trend." she placed a hand on his shoulder.

"to ask if i would peel an orange?" he asked slowly.

"they said if you would peel an orange for your significant other, you would do any mundane task for the–"

"i need you to understand i'd peel the earth for you."

throwing her head back, she let out another laugh. she knew he was joking but his delivery had sent her over – keeping a straight face as he replied the most outlandish way possible.

MINGYU

she knew he would peel the orange for her, she didn't need to ask.

in the three years they had been together, not once had she had to open a canned drink, twist open a cap off a bottled water, plan a single date, open her own doors – hell, she hadn't had to put her own gas in her car since she began dating the king of acts of service.

he had done it without being asked.

but she also didn't think it would be such a hot topic when she had showed him the tiktok of the orange peel theory.

"fine, you want peeled oranges?" mingyu grumbled, walking over to their fruit bowl, peeling the citrus and placing it in front of her. "here."

looking at the bare fruit, y/n couldn't help but wince. not because of his actions.

but because she hated the sight of the white pith. she hated peeled oranges.

it was far too messy to eat and the texture of the white fuzz surrounding it gave her the heebie-jeebies – shuddering just at the thought of touching it.

"exactly." mingyu grabbed another orange and a knife – slicing it in quarters. "i can't peel it because you like it sliced."

she stood there dumfounded as he left the kitchen chuckling.

he won this round.

"that's dumb." vernon snorted as his girlfriend showed him the third tiktok of someone's boyfriend failing miserably at their significant other's attempts to ask them to peel an orange for them.

"it's also kinda funny." she laughed.

"i'm one step ahead though."

furrowing her brows, she gave him a look from the other side of the couch.

"that," vernon pointed to the small potted plant resting by their window sill. "is gonna be an orange tree."

he had recently been very into assisting her with finding decorations for their new shared home, at times coming home with various plants and art works. she had gotten accustomed to his random home-good shopping sprees, she didn't dare bat an eye when he had come home with a real potted plant the other day. it would just be another addition to their countless ones that he used to brighten up their home.

"you bought an orange tree– plant?" her eyes wide. he never was the green thumb, killing the cactus she had bought for him years ago. she figured she would be the one to tend to this new plant.

"anyone can peel an orange." he shrugged. "i'll move it to the yard when it gets bigger."

giggling, she finally had taken the hint; taking her eyes off the television and looking over at him. "yes, honey, can i help you?"

"everyone else's girlfriends are asking for oranges..." he pouted. "peeled."

joshua wasn't much to keep up with trends, let alone be chronically online the same way his members were. she didn't think he would be well aware of the current debate taking over social media – and frankly, she didn't care for it.

it was just an orange.

"did you want me to ask if you would peel an orange for me?" she asked with raised brows.

"duh..." he nodded. during today's practice, he had overheard seungcheol and mingyu exchange stories of how their significant others had tested them with the theory – the rest of the boys soon joining in. everyone else seemed to have their own share of stories... but him.

"i– it's hypothetical though. it's more of if you're willing to peel–" she watched as he pouted once again. "would you peel an orange for me?"

joshua grinned, digging into his hoodie's front pocket to pull out two oranges, a banana, and an apple.

"apple?"

"i'll use my teeth."

"no!" she cried, grabbing the fruit from him.

JIHOON

"have you guys heard of the orange peel theory?" soonyoung asked, shoveling a spoonful of rice into his mouth.

she and jihoon shook their heads at their unsolicited guest who somehow managed to make himself a little too comfortable in their shared apartment; claiming that before she came along, he was jihoon's babygirl.

she didn't care to fight soonyoung over it; jihoon did enough of that himself.

"isn't that a gym?" jihoon quipped.

"that's orange theory, babe." y/n corrected, grabbing another shrimp from the middle of the table.

soonyoung always came over unannounced, but never empty handed – arriving today with seafood boil for all three of them to share.

"ah..." he nodded, taking the shrimp from y/n's plate – peeling it for her.

she was shit at peeling her own shrimp and jihoon was more than happy to make sure she didn't ruin her perfectly manicured nails.

soonyoung rolled his eyes at the couple who never stayed up to date with the latest internet trends. "sickening." he mumbled.

peeling shrimp was far more romantic than peeling oranges, anyways. but if anyone were to ask jihoon, he'd skin anything she asked him to.

including their unannounced guest.

SEOKMIN

he didn't exactly fail her humorous attempts to test him on the orange peel theory.

but he didn't pass either.

in his defense, she had asked him in the middle of the night – waking him from his slumber to ask if he would peel an orange for her, only to reply "tomorrow."

and he knew she wasn't mad. there was no reason to.

it was a silly tiktok she had seen while she scrolled next to her boyfriend who was deep asleep – practically shaking their walls with his loud snores.

but seokmin felt guilty after he had read the groupchat he had shared with his members, each of them sharing how their significant others had managed to bring up the hot debate topic circulating social media.

if he had known....

"babe... why is our fridge full of peeled oranges?" she laughed. she had originally gone into the kitchen to grab a drink only to be distracted by the lack of bottled waters.... and an abundance of orange filled tupperwares.

"i'm sorry."

glancing over her boyfriend who stood at the doorway of their kitchen, she let out another laugh – walking over to pull him into a hug. "did you peel all those?"

he nodded into her shoulder, making her giggle.

"i didn't take it personally."

"i did." he pulled away, bringing his fingers up to her face. "and now i smell like an orange."

SEUNGKWAN

"look what i brought!" he sang as he kicked off his sneakers, shaking the bag in his hand.

seungkwan had paid his family a visit, coming back from the tiny island just south of the mainland with various treats he enjoyed growing up.

including a bag of tangerines.

"ooooh!" she clapped, following him into the kitchen – digging into the bag of his mom's homecooking. "these are going to be so good. can you–"

before she could even finish her sentence, he had placed a peeled orange on top of one of the containers; a large smile on his face.

"thank you?" she reached for the fruit hesitantly; wary of the strange smile on his face.

"i'd peel oranges for you."

popping a slice in her mouth. "i know... thanks."

"any mundane thing, i'd do."

she nodded, still quite confused with his actions. "i know."

"just getting that out there." he clicked his tongue.

"okay... weirdo." y/n chewed.

seunkwan frowned at her reaction.

"i take it back." he snatched the fruit from her hand.

"hey!"

Seventeen had just clinched a prestigious Daesang award, and you were out celebrating the hard-earned victory with the group.

the night begins with celebratory drinks, as Hoshi's friends convince you to join in the festivities.

and that's it you guys were out, partying hard celebrating your boyfriend's success

although Hoshi had been there too to make sure you didn't go overboard

what caught him off guard was your unexpected assertion of not recognizing him

"Get your hands off of me you pervert!"

he was shocked, to say the least

but gotta admit, he felt kinda proud seeing you stand your ground and not let some random guy touch you, even if that guy happened to be him.

You turned to Seungkwan, seeking validation and asking him to confirm that this person is not someone you know.

to which Seungkwan awkwardly laughs, caught in the middle of the situation

"Babe, I'm your cute boyfriend"

"Then tell me something only my boyfriend knows?" you question him

He raises his eyebrows and motions you to come closer

"one time you tried to challenge me to a dance battle, but it turned into a clumsy stumble, and you ended up on the flo-"

you put your hands on his mouth to stop him from revealing that embarrassing story

"Okay, okay! you're definitely my boyfriend"

Jun:

Despite being your boyfriend, Jun finds you unable to recognize him while heavily intoxicated.

the boy is pouting and is offended af

"Come on, shake it off," he said trying to grab your arm to get you out of the club

what caught him off guard was you landing a punch square in his stomach

Jun visibly grimaces, feeling the impact of the punch to his rib

"I know how to box sir, so you better keep your distance," you said walking away

At this point, Jun has no choice but to wait for you to head home by yourself, all he can do is follow you home making sure you get there safely

he woke up the next morning with a huge bruise on his side and for the love of god you couldn't remember a thing

"Where did you get that bruise from baby?" you asked innocently

The8:

he tried to play like he was actually hurt by you not recognizing him, but, man, he thought it was so darn cute

he would listen to you ramble about everything in your life, from how your new cat was constantly attacking others to how much your boyfriend loved you

"You know, my boyfriend wanted to name the new cat Pumpkin, but he looks so much like an Oreo, we almost fought but in the end, we named it Oreo"

"Your boyfriend treats you so badly, why would he fight with such a sweet girl like you" Minghao played along

"NOOOO! my boyfriend is the sweetest person in the whole world, don't you dare talk shit about the love of my life," you warned your new friend showing shoving your lock screen of you and Minghao together in his face

He'd chuckle and mumble something along the lines of, "How am I not supposed to love you"

Dino:

Dino got a little pouty when he realized you couldn't recognize him

all he wanted was your affection, but you wouldn't let him touch you, leaving him slightly disappointed

"Babe come on let's go"

"No I don't know you please stop following me, mister" you yelled

poor guy

he's chasing after you trying to convince you that he's not a threat, in fact he's your boyfriend

"I'm your loving BOYFRIEND babe, do you not recognize me?"

"Why won't I recognize my own boyfriend you creep? Stop following me around." you'd say, slapping his hands away

You took out your phone and called your boyfriend trying to explain that a creepy man was following you around

Dino handed you his ringing phone, showing it to you to convince you that he was indeed your boyfriend.

"Babyyyyy!!! you should've come sooner" you exclaimed, throwing yourself on him, wrapping your arms around him

"I'll always be here for you love," he said shaking his head before planting a soft kiss to your forehead.

warmth

a/n. cries in single and waking up alone everyday

genre. i felt a big angsty… but (un)fortunately i’m a big softie so there’s happy ending :)

when you wake up, you feel warmth. not only the covers warmth or because of the heating.

you feel seungchol’s warmth.

his arms wrapped around you, like you’re a teddy bear in his hold. you’re in his embrace, surrounded by him. his chin is resting on top of your head and your face is buried in his chest.

for the first time in two months you’ve woken up next to him.

you lean back a bit, to check if this is real, only to return to your previous position. you don’t want this moment to end.

you don’t even notice when tears gather at the brim of your waterline, threatening to spill out. your hands wrap around him and squeeze his waist, trying to hold in your emotions.

but your breath becomes uneven and even in his sleep, your boyfriend is very attentive.

“y/n?�� cheol hums, voice raspy.

“i love you” you mumble, your voice cracking and the first tear dropping from your eye.

seungchol frowns and reattaches your hands from your waist to grab your face.

“hey, what’s wrong? look at me…” he whispers, genuinely concerned. even though you’re looking down, avoiding eye contact, he can still see the tears steaming down your cheeks and how wet your lashes are. waking up to see you crying wasn’t something he ever wanted to experience, especially when you’re in his hold–

“nothing. i just love you so much” you let out a dry chuckle and manage to look up, meet his chocolate irises filled with love and affection. nevertheless, he’s still worried.

“i love you too, sweetheart” cheol humms and his thumbs caress your cheeks gently. he notices the way you slightly trap your bottom lip with your teeth.

“it’s just… it’s been a while since we woke up like this…” you mumble, burying your head in the crook of his neck as your hands look for his “…together”

seungchol’s heart throbs with pain; he knows, he feels guilty. work was kicking ass but now… he made a promise to himself to wake up with you, no matter what.
