AIM: The target of the mission was set to establish a network of supercomputers ranging from a few Tera Flops (TF) to Hundreds of Tera Flops (TF) and three systems with greater than or equal to 3 Peta Flops (PF) in academic and research institutions of National importance across the country by 2022. FEATURES This network of Supercomputers envisaging a total of 15-20 PF was approved in 2015 and was later revised to a total of 45 PF (45000 TFs), a jump of 6 times more compute power within the same cost and capable of solving large and complex computational problems. First supercomputer assembled indigenously, called Param Shivay, was installed in IIT (BHU) and was inaugurated by the Prime Minister. Similar systems Param Shakti and Param Brahma were installed at IIT-Kharagpur and IISER, Pune. They are equipped with applications from domains like Weather and Climate, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Bioinformatics, and Material science.

11 new systems are likely to be set up in different IITs, NITs, National Labs, and IISERs across India by December this year, which will have many sub-systems manufactured and microprocessors designed in India which will bring in a cumulative capacity of 10.4 petaflops. Geared to provide Supercomputing facility to about 60-70 institutions Nation-wide and more than thousands of active Researchers, Academicians, and so on, NSM has gathered momentum and is moving fast not only towards creating a computer infrastructure for the country but also to build capacity of the country to develop the next generation of supercomputer experts. In a meeting among judges, lawyers and the government through the Solicitor General held on Monday, it was decided that only extremely urgent cases would be taken up by a Bench(es) through a video app. The link would lapse automatically by default shortly after the hearing. A researcher working on a vaccine against COVID-19 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Some of the medications are already used to treat other diseases, and repurposing them to treat COVID-19 may be faster than trying to invent a new anti-viral from scratch. To come up with the list, hundreds of researchers embarked on an unusual study of the genes of the coronavirus, also called SARS-CoV-2. To infect a lung cell, the virus must insert its genes, co-opting the cell’s own genetic machinery. The cell begins to produce viral proteins, which are used to produce millions of new viruses. Each of those viral proteins must be able to latch onto the necessary human proteins for the process to work. FINDING: In the new study, the scientists investigated 26 of the virus’s 29 genes, which direct production of the viral proteins. Researchers found 332 human proteins targeted by the virus. Some viral proteins seemed to target just one human protein; other viral proteins are capable of targeting a dozen human cellular proteins. Researchers sought drugs that also latch onto the human proteins that the virus seems to need to enter and replicate in human cells. Intriguingly, some of the possible treatments are drugs used to attack parasites. And the list includes antibiotics that kill bacteria by gumming up the cellular machinery they use to build proteins. But some of those drugs also attach to human proteins. The new study raises the possibility that this side effect might turn out to be an anti-viral treatment. One drug on the list: CHLOROQUINE: kills the single-celled parasite that causes malaria. Scientists have long known that it can also attach to a human cellular protein called the sigma-1 receptor. The effects of pollution on the globe

The world we live on today will not be the same for the future generations of the world, if we continue to behave in a careless fashion. The human race has recently evolved into a state where we use our mind over our body. We have invented machines that can do the work for us so we don’t have to. However, with every advantage there is a side effect: With these new advances we need resources and energy to create them. It is no coincidence that as the world industrialized pollution increased accordingly. Even with regulations on the amount of pollution companies can put into the earth, pollution is still at an all-time high.

Pollution is divided into three sub categories that include air pollution, water pollution and Land/soil Pollution. All of these categories have lasting effects on the Earth. In my opinion the most noticeable pollution in Wisconsin would be land/soil Pollution. Land pollution can range anywhere from plastic bottle laying around, to toxic pesticides being sprayed on crops. In 1962, Biologist Rachel Carson made an argument saying that a popular pesticide called DDT may contribute to causing cancer in humans and killing bird eggs. In 1972, the United states banned the chemical. Then Carson’s claims were found to be true and the chemical was found responsible for killing many bald eagle eggs. However, other countries disagree with these clams, or think the pros outweigh the cons. DDT is one of the most effective ways to fight malaria due to its potency against mosquitos and other insects. The other most common type of soil pollution is trash in the ground. Often garbage contains harmful oils, chemicals, and ink. Even though some of the garbage does make it to a landfill; landfills liners can fail, and when they do the toxins from the trash seep into the soil. Plants surrounding the landfill absorb the toxins and animals eat the contaminated plants and may become sick.

Another major type of pollution is water pollution. Water pollution is a great concern in the Wisconsin with Lake Michigan bordering Wisconsin, plus the thousands of freshwater inland lakes Wisconsin has. Water pollution can range from visually having trash floating in its water to having invisible micro-organisms living in the water. Both types of pollution can be very dangerous and can cause long term damage to both the environment and humans. A good example of poor water conditions is in Delhi, India. The city is home to more than 21 million people, and is very poor. The city lacks a proper swage system to effectively clan its citizens waste so the extra is typically dumped in a local river. This creates toxic and unlivable conditions for both the people and the animals in the area. Due to the contamination it is dangerous to eat the fish or drink the water from the river, even when filtered. Fertilizer can also be a major source of water pollution. Fertilizers can be sprayed on crops or spread on corps as pellets. When it rains that fertilizer often is mixed in with the rain runoff, and can contaminate local rivers and lakes.

Last but certainly not least is air pollution. Air pollution is typically not visible but it can be. Vehicles, factories, and aerosols are the most common causes for air pollution. Air pollution can cause people’s eyes and lungs to burn, and if prolonged exposure occurs; it may cause lung cancer. I had a firsthand experience both viewing and breathing in heavy air pollution. I recently traveled to California for spring break for a fishing trip. When driving through Los Angeles I could see the smog from a distance, as we approached the city I could smell it and even feel it in my lungs. It was absolutely disgusting. Though the air pollution I experienced had mostly only short term affects for little exposure, that is not the case for all pollutants. In 1984 there was an accident in Bhopal, India. A chemical was released into the air and roughly 8,000 people died within a few days of the accident with lung related injuries; and even more were permanently injured. Less dramatic air pollution such as nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide can mix in the air with water and form an acid. This acid can come down onto the earth and is informally known as acid rain. Acid ran can kill plants and pollute waterways and harm ecosystems.

Despite the horrific examples of pollution that happen around the world; governments are making efforts to fight pollution and clean up planet earth. Governments are beginning to pass more laws to encourage recycling and penalize pollution. An example of a law passed to reduce pollution is Kyoto Protocol, passed by the united nations. The Kyoto Protocol is an agreement between 191 countries to limit the emissions of greenhouse gasses. However, the United States, the leading greenhouse gasses producer, refused to sign the agreement and China has failed to meet their goal of reducing greenhouse gasses. Recycling is becoming more and more popular around the world. Recycling reduces the amount of waste in landfills and other polluted areas around the world. Australia and Switzerland have the highest recycling rates in the world with roughly 60% of their waste being recycled. Recycling also creates jobs and stimulates economies throughout the world. Reducing the pollution throughout Earth is benefiting the world in more ways than one.

Pollution, no matter what form is harmful to the environment. Pollution is 100% our fault. Weather it goes into the air, water, or land, it is slowly killing our earth. All pollution comes from biproducts of our own creations. If we don’t change our ways, future generations will not know the same Earth as we do today. It is up to us to maintain earths sustainability because it is the only world we have. We need to put away the greed for money and profit, and start thinking about the whole picture and long-term goal.
