Swamp Sparrow
The habits of this sparrow have led to a healthy population that appears to have few problems maintaining their numbers.

Lincoln's Sparrow - (Melospiza lincolnii)
Swamp Sparrow - (Melospiza georgiana)
Rio Grande Nature Center (State Park) - Fall 2023
A comparison between two species. I used to get them mixed up a lot when I started birding, despite the very clear difference between their belly plumage. The Lincoln's Sparrow (solo, on the left) is full of streaks along its chest and flanks, and between the streaks is a wonderful buffy band of color. The Swamp Sparrow (on the right) has an indistinct "smudge" of gray, with almost no streaking present. Swamp Sparrow also have a more rich, reddish tone to their wing and back feathers, and more gray to their face than Lincoln's.
These two species, as well as the Song Sparrow, make up the genus Melospiza. With Song Sparrow being near cosmopolitan in frequency, it's then a bit ironic that Lincoln's Sparrow are more common in the West, and Swamp Sparrow are more common in the East.
All banding, marking, and sampling is being conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey's BBL. Permission to share these images was given by Rio Grande Bird Research, Inc. (Instagram: @ birdbanderdude_nm)

Swamp Sparrow
The wild places are full of migrating sparrows. This Swamp Sparrow seemed annoyed. Perhaps the lack of wet areas due to our dry spell had something to do with that.
