OUAT Thoughts Pt.57--Episodes 4-5

I have watched through S6E5; spoilers DNI. Also, spoiler warning for anyone further behind than I am.

—(┛ಠ_ಠ)┛彡┻━┻ That’s it?! I’ve been hoping for Jekyll and Hyde for six seasons and they finally show up and that’s it? What the fricking heck!

—Oh, but the way they died together was beautiful.

—And much as I’m upset that Jekyll and Hyde are gone, their last episode was a terribly good spin on the story. I mean, I adored Dr. Jekyll with my whole heart, but the concept that he wasn’t all good and Mr. Hyde wasn’t all evil was amAzing.

—Seriously, the implication (because I don’t think it was ever really fr stated) that Jekyll split all of his emotions into Hyde and left himself with only the method and the science is intriguing. My brain feels like it’s expanding. It’s a real shame I won’t get to see any more of it.

—I also like that we finally emphasized the ‘mad scientist’ aspect of Dr. Jekyll. What he was doing definitely went against the laws of nature.

—Yeah, also, I’ve waxed philosophical and poetic about Dr. Jekyll’s character, but now Imma be shallow as heck. I was hoping. For some mad scientists. Being gay and doing crimes in the lab together. I don’t usually get upset when my ships don’t happen (except in the case of stuff like FinnPoe or Garashir that is so close to canon you know it would’ve been if the makers hadn’t been cowards/stupid) but I really liked the idea. And I’m not even really upset, just ruminating on the ✨potential✨ Which is what fic is for!…Unless it’s a rarepair, which I’m pretty sure Jekyllstein is. Moral of the story: I need to not rarepair, especially in the case of character who have, like, two seconds onscreen together (WHAT WAS I THINKING?!?!?!?) because I am not emotionally strong enough for it.

—I wasn’t expecting Rumple to get a haircut. I loved his old hairstyle so much that I considered having it done for my hair, but his new one is alright. I agree with Regina—it highlights his eyes. Which, by the way, are a *fine* intermediate shade of brown.

—I didn’t really like Jasmine at the beginning. She went on about her palace and how she’s a princess and then had the audacity to ask Aladdin, a guy who literally has to steal to survive, why he wasn’t doing anything to make Agrabah better. Like, girl, get some awareness.

—I like Aladdin having magic. That was a cool way to bring him into Emma’s storyline, and also a neat method of eliminating the need for the genie.

—Also, the fact that the stupid monkey wasn’t there has me weeping tears of joy. I hate all monkeys and apes, they just freak me out too much, and their noises are obnoxious. Not having to put up with the monkey makes me so happy!

—Jasmine’s clothes are pretty.

—Ack! Archie’s A) a cricket and B) in a cage. Now not only do I have to worry about him being okay, I also can’t hear his soothing voice or see his cute face. Dang it!

—But him having to babysit Robin under threat of death was fun. Most guys look extra cute holding a baby, but especially the homey types like Archie.

—If Regina has to die to kill the Evil Queen, I will not be pleased. She’s a pretty cool lady. And if Emma dies, Henry is going to need one mom left.

—Iago is such a pretty bird!

—I love that Snow wants to be a teacher again. And I adore her deeply for saying that teaching is a noble profession. That’s what I wanted to do with my life once, and even though it can’t work out for me, I think it’s noble, too.

—Hook is going to do something stupid with those scissors.

The Evil Queen took the Princess' hand, leading her to her parents and Prince Henry. "I believe the princess has a little gift for you. Emma, please tell everyone what you just did in your diapers" the queen said.

"Hey, don't ignore me you didn't answer me," Emma whined as she stomped her foot as she was led to her parents. Snow and Charming seeing their daughter withe the Evil queen, "YOU take your dirty hands off of my daughter you vile witch," Charming adn Snowsttod ready to fight if need be. Emma looked at teh floor before going into tears "I made poopy mommy and daddy," the blonde princess informed them, the overgrown baby looked over at the evil queen "happy?" the blonde asked the evil queen.

glossary:

Swan Lake: Swan Lake, Op. 20, is a ballet composed by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875–76. It is now one of the most popular ballets of all time. The ballet is based on a German fairy tale, and tells the story of a prince named Siegfried who falls in love with Odette, a princess who has been turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer

Odette: Odette is the main female protagonist in the ballet "Swan Lake," which is composed by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. She is the White Swan, also known as the Swan Princess/Swan Queen.

Anna Pavlova: Anna Pavlovna Pavlova was a Russian prima ballerina of the late 19th and the early 20th centuries. She was a principal artist of the Imperial Russian Ballet and the Ballets Russes of Sergei Diaghilev. (basically, every ballerina’s idol)

first position: In the first position, the heels are together, with toes turned out until the feet are in a large, open V or a straight line.

relevé: Relevé is a French term meaning "raised up." It is one of the basic ballet moves. The dancer starts in a demi-plié (a move where the dancer bends their knees halfway while keeping their feet on the ground) and then rises up into demi-pointe (on the balls of the feet) or en pointe (on the toes), either on one foot or both feet.

“Let’s take it from the top, Y/N. More turned out this time. And your ‘wings’ aren’t flowy enough. You are the very Swan Princess, not a struggling cygnet. You die gracefully.”

You blew air threw your nose a little more forcefully than you usually would, trying your best to follow your ballet teacher’s instructions.

“Ah, Gwendolyn! So nice of you to join us.”

That statement was usually used sarcastically in most settings. So why did your teacher’s voice take on a note of adoration? You resisted the urge to roll your eyes, not even looking at the new arrival. All she ever did was drop into class half an hour late - without even doing her hair in a proper bun - and get showered with praises for everything she did. Always Gwen this, Gwen that. You were so sick of it.

“Gwen, if you decide to try out, you would be a perfect fit for the White Swan,” Your teacher eagerly told her, and your ‘flowy feathers’ tightened into fists. Just brilliant. In her eyes, you had no chance at Odette, did you? Once again, Gwendolyn Stacy would swoop in and snatch up something you had worked so hard for, spending hours upon hours on late nights at the studio practising alone, all because the teacher thought she was the next Anna Pavlova. But every time, you bit your tongue and kept your head down. One day, you would show them. You would show them all how good you were. And little Gwendolyn Stacy, the number one teacher’s pet, would watch and weep.

You cleared your throat to jolt your teacher out of her rambling. “Miss? My audition?”

She blinked as if she were just noticing you. “Ah, right. Yes, you may continue.”

You were ready to hurl your pointe shoes at both of their annoying faces, but you focused on making yourself extra turned out and extra graceful. Oh, how the tables would turn when you got this role.

You risked a glance out of the corner of your eye and noticed with a smug satisfaction that Gwen was staring at you, eyes wide. Completely enthralled.

Ha-ha, Gwendolyn Stacy. Look upon actual, hard-earned talent and despair.

You finished the Dying Swan - the Swan Lake piece you were doing for your audition - and bowed, standing in first position with your head held high.

“Thank you, Y/N. That was very nice. Everyone, let’s get started. Get your shoes on and get into your positions at the barre, please.”

Ugh, the barre positions. Your arch-nemesis, apart from a certain Gwen Stacy. Well, maybe not apart from her, since your barre position was right in front of her.

“One, two, three, four - hold, two, three four…”

You tuned out the voice of your ballet teacher; the exercise was purely muscle memory to you by now, and her voice was only distracting you at the moment.

“Hey, Y/N.”

You were pulled out of your intense focus by the voice behind you. Once you realised who it was, you had to resist the urge to scoff. “What is it?”

“I, uh… I just wanted to say that you did amazing. It was very graceful. You’ll make a good White Swan.” That almost made you lose your balance in a relevé and twist your ankle, because what?

Gwen Stacy thought that you’d get the role?

Oh. That was new.

Or maybe it wasn’t, and you were just imagining the whole ‘undeserving slacker’ thing and painting her as the bad guy…?

You almost giggled at that. Nah. This was definitely some ploy to get you to relax a little, to stop practising almost obsessively. Yeah, she was just trying to ensure you weren’t a threat. The moment you let down your guard, she would snatch up the role of Odette. You just knew it. Well, she could try all she wanted; you would not make it easy for her.

“Oh, I know,” You replied coolly, ending the exercise with everyone else and turning to offer her a politely bored smile. “But thank you.”

Gwen’s smile dropped a little and her eyebrows scrunched together slightly, her piercings glinting in the studio’s warm light. “Okay, well… I’ll see you around, I guess.”

She reached down and grabbed her duffel bag, unceremoniously dropping her teal pointe shoes into the mess of clothes and who knows what else she kept in it.

You kept your eyes on her until she disappeared out the studio’s door after a quick goodbye to the teacher. She was like a ghost, always appearing and flickering out just as quickly as one. And somehow always getting away with it, every single time. Not to mention… she was also somehow really good. Despite missing classes and coming late.

“Remember, class. Now that I’ve seen all your auditions, the roles will be up next week. Don’t be late,” your teacher called as you all left the building.

You kissed your teeth in annoyance. Yeah, don’t be late. Unless you’re Gwen Stacy.

Good grief, that girl would be the death of you.

Part 2

Opening my eyes I see I am riding on a horses back through the forest until I pulled the reins stopping outside an old castle in a clearing. Dismounting the horse a light yellow dress falls down my legs. Slowly twirling around I had to admit that the dress was beautiful but I don't understand how this is possible. Tucking hair behind my ear a sudden voice with a giggle makes me nearly jump out of my skin. "How did you stumble onto my grounds, dearie. I'd hate to take that heart of yours so soon." Holding my hands up in front of me I gulped seeing a man dressed in snake skins smirking directly at me. Moving my left foot backwards I stay beside my horse who made a noise to the man or should I say creature. "What's your name, sir...I'm Astrid." He does a bow before red ungolfs him and he reappears wearing a tux and a cane. "Rumplestiltskin..." Rolling the R in his name longer than I expected him to. He slowly walks up to me where I froze in my place unsure if it was done out of fear or something intriguing inside my mind.

Ever since I was a little girl I've had my head wrapped around the hope that maybe my life could be a fairytale. I should have given up on the childish thoughts years ago but growing up in the foster system with my sister I needed to have some hope. My older sister by only 2 minutes gave up when she became a teenager while I still keep acting like I am child. Rumplestiltskin holds out his hands seeing my hesitation to put my hands in his. "I'd like to give you something, Lady Astrid." Shaking my head no I corrected the man with brown eyes staring down at me softly. "I am not a princess, Mr. Rumplestiltskin...you know what that's too long. How about I just call you, Rumple hmm?" Rumplestiltskin smiled suddenly giving me a tiny twirl underneath his arm like we were dancing yet I knew we weren't. "You can call me whatever you'd like Lady Astrid. Let me give you some advice though free of charge." Leaning up on my toes he didn't get the chance to finish his sentence.

The door to my apartment I share with my sister Emma gets opened and she walks in dropping her shoes at the door. Sitting up on the couch I rub the sleep from my eyes not intending to fall asleep in the living room. Tonight she was putting herself back into the dating world but it clearly didn't go well when she shut the door a little aggressively. Swinging my legs over the couch I rest my elbows on my knees asking. "What was the guys problem tonight, sis?" She sat a box down on the countertop opening it to reveal two simple cupcakes that she had bought for our birthday. Which is today number 28 to be exact. "He's married. That's the problem, Astrid. Come on candle time." She flipped her blonde hair over her shoulder when I rose to my feet intertwining my right hand with hers. Closing my eyes I didn't know it but we wished for the same thing, to not be just the two of us on our birthdays anymore. Suddenly the doorbell rang as I started eating my cupcake until she called my name sounding concerned.

"Uh. Can I help you?" Emma asked barley holding the door opened where I see a small boy smiling up at us. He has brown hair and bright eyes with a bookbag over his shoulder. "Are you Emma and Astrid Swan?" He asked us both with hope in his eyes. Leaning around my sister's arm I answered him. "Yes...can we know who you are kid?" He nodded never dropping the smile from his face. "My name's Henry. I'm your son." He declared eyeing my sister. He moves around entering the apartment searching for juice. Running my fingers through my hair I flopped back on the couch. "So let me get this straight. You ran away from home and came searching for your birth mother?" The boy Henry nodded yes pointing a finger at me. "I want you and my mom to come home with me to Storybooke." She rolled her eyes about to call the cops until I grabbed her arm giving her the puppy dog eyes. "Come on, Em. He's just a kid." She puts the phone down changing into a red leather jacket walking down to her yellow bug on the street.

Sitting in the backseat I peak my head over seeing the ten year old reading what could only be an old fairytale book. My sister obviously noticed raising a brow to him. "What's that?" He doesn't look away from the page he's reading till he mentions my name. "I'm not sure you're ready...Astrid is ready though." My sister focused her attention back on the road when I leaned forward in my seat confused at what he meant. "Henry, what are you saying exactly?" He turned in the seat showing me a picture of a man wearing skins and leather inside a cell. "Have you ever seen this man. Because I can see it in your eyes, belief." Blinking my eyes a few times I tilt my head slightly recognizing the man from my dream. "I guess...it was only in a dream.." Emma glanced back to me through the mirror. "Just because you believe something doesn't make it true." She scoffed to where he replied back. "That's exactly what makes it true." He leans back to the seat with my eyes trained on the book.

Snow White and Prince Charming where desperate for an answer from the only man who could tell them anything, Rumplestiltskin. Walking down to his cell she rested her hand on her belly suprised that he had a solution. A solution she didn't agree with. Because it involved putting their lives in the hands of their unborn child. That she would never get to raise her child like a mother always dreamed. Charming grabbed his wife's arm pulling her away from the dark man. "I've heard enough we're leaving." Rumplestiltskin started shaking the bars screaming. "We had a deal. I want her name. We had a deal I need her name!" Charming stopped correcting the monster. "Her, it's a boy." Snow paused in her steps when he spoke again. He was the most powerful magician in all the realms so of course he knew all. "Missy, Missy. You know I'm right...tell me what's their names." Charming stared at his wife not knowing that there were two babies. "Emma and Astrid. That's their names." Snow revealed leaving the dark one inside his cell.

SO THIS IS THE GRIPE WITH EPIC WINTER

I HAVE RESISTED IT! I HAVE RESISTED MY OWN RAGE! I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE TALK SALT ABOUT EPIC WINTER AND I AGREE WITH THEIR POINTS AND I DO NOT WISH 2 ADD NEEDLESSLY 2 THE DELUGE.

HOWEVER.

there is one thing!!!! i have not seen people discuss and it is the thing that pisses me off the most. i am NOTHING if not a keeper of Lore!!!! so here this is: my manifesto.

i feel like i am not making a bold claim when i say that in order for the moral and story of ever after high to function appropriately, destiny must not have any intrinsic, immovable influence over anyone's life. you can choose to follow your written destiny, of course! you can also choose not to follow your written destiny. i feel as if this is very much baby's first observation about ever after high. destiny is simply the societal expectation placed upon people to uphold the existing system, and if you do not follow it, you do not disappear forever in a wormhole. destiny is not the decider of your fate; you are. this is dare i say! the point of the show!

epic winter!!!!!! destroys this idea entirely!!!!! actually, you could make the case that dragon games does as well! but more on that in a second!

epic winter looks at daring, a boy living his life after the storybook of legends - the artefact that supposedly is the one thing that binds a person to their destiny - has been destroyed without him ever laying a finger on it, let alone signing it, and decides that today, he will fulfil his destiny! the one he wasnt even aware he fucking had, lending him absolutely no agency in this matter!! ...!!!?!?

SO RIDDLE ME THIS!!!! WHAT'S THE POINT THEN!!!!! what is the point of ANYTHING raven or the rebellion has done or anything they believe about writing your own story if destiny is, in truth, very concious and intentional and likes fate very much actually and will funnel ur sorry little ass into a story regardless? the workings of destiny were apparently not contained in the book, so raven's actions on legacy day meant nothing and seemingly did all her actions thereafter, just sweating herself 2 death in her little exercise in futility because you have no control actually :) fate exists and it can make you the evil queen whenever it wants! or the swan princess! or little miss muffet! just because destiny might not manifest in the way you expect does not mean that it is any less worth fighting against, and i find the idea that destiny is suddenly perfectly acceptable in this instance because daring ending up actually liking rosabella, objectionable, to say the LEAST.

and while we're here, a note on dragon games! i think it can be somewhat excused from this philosophical tangle because the whole instance of apple fulfilling HER initial destiny (getting poisoned by the apple) was completely intentional on faybelle and the evil queens part. they capitalised on her existing nature and pushed destiny upon her. as for the kiss well!!! that's what i consider the tip of the iceberg before epic winter plunges fully into the ice-cold depths of this arctic shitstorm. daring is not subject to the same circumstances as apple. the snow king has no idea who he is when he curses him, and rosabella does not know he will be the beast either when she first starts speaking to him!! its all so terribly, hauntingly organic. everyone is a pawn, orchestrated entirely by fate, and the original moral core of the show lies blugeoned in some dark corner, reduced to ruins by the all-consuming inevitability of destiny.

OUAT Thoughts Pt.61--Episodes 14-15

I have watched through S6E15; spoilers DNI. Also, spoiler warning for anyone further behind than I am.

—Once again, Regina is serving 💅looks💅 Those black coats with the big skirts? I love those. And the hats are really impeccable. Plus, she’s worn her hair in an updo with zero loose bits lately, which declutters the aesthetic.

—May I point out how much I adore that Captain Nemo told Hook he needed ‘family’? That word specifically is so much more important to me than if he had told Hook he needed love, or a soulmate, or something like that. Family is as big or as small as you make it, so even just Emma would count as his family, but so would Henry and the Charmings.

—That thing where the enchanted arrow led Regina to…Regina? Yeah, that’s genius. Sad, but genius.

—On the one hand, I really respect that instead of Emma being mad about Hook killing David’s father, she was upset because he was hiding it from her. On the other hand, she’s really forfeited any right to be upset about people hiding things, cause she’s basically the queen of it.

—Ne’er-do-well! That’s the word! I’ve been trying to come up with that since the new Robin showed up and I just couldn’t. Bless him (or maybe it was the Evil Queen?) for saying it for me!

—For a princess, Jasmine isn’t very tactful. And for some reason I’m finding it hard to believe her ‘journey’ from feeling like she doesn’t deserve love to being more confident. Maybe it’s because she acted so snooty in her first episode.

—Regina’s short haircut looks soooooo cute when it’s curled.

—It was funny when Jafar knocked out Jasmine’s friends and Ariel and Hook fell onto a nice, soft bed and Aladdin just—fell on the floor.

—It was kind of weird of Emma to just assume that Hook had abandoned her after everything they’ve been through together.

—I love that the Evil Queen got a happy ending with other Robin because Regina accepted her evil past. It works for me on so many levels. Although, in that realm, aren’t the Queen and Robin both low-key being hunted down by the law?

—Jasmine’s accessories are so cute. The shawl, the copious amounts of jewelry….

—Is Gideon playing an angle here? I find it hard to believe that after the lengths he went to trying to kill Emma, he wants her to defeat the Black Fairy for him. Also, I’m mad at him for banishing Hook.

—Mermaids need to come up with a technology—something like a submarine carriage, maybe?—that can let them transport other people across realms. It would solve so many problems.

—Regina is shaping up to be that one friend who threatens you with good vibes. It’s awesome.

—I love the way Hook talks about Emma. That right there is true love.

—I can’t believe the thing Ariel got arrested for was stealing a fork. And then later she made a fork alarm system for her house. I love her.

—Can we just hurry up and solve the Charmings’ curse already? They’re still making me sad.

The 13th post: More than a Disney Prince

“Hans is a prince. He is a Disney Prince, but he’s more than a Disney Prince. He is many things. And there are a lots of secrets and twists and turns that we take with Hans.” "A lot of the scenes I recorded did not end up in the movie" Santino Fontana on Hans.

From Admiral Westergaard to Prince Hans of the Southern Isles

As you will already know, Frozen is an adaptation from the tale “The Snow Queen” by danish author Hans Christian Andersen. Disney had been trying to adapt “The Snow Queen” for decades. Different ideas were developed and a lot of changes were made in the process (you have a really interesting post about Frozen’s development by @greatqueenanna here).

We know that at some point, when Elsa still was a villain, the idea for Hans’ character was a nameless “Admiral Westergaard”, who was Anna’s love interest.

Evil Elsa deleted scene

Elsa was then changed, from a villain to a villain who had a redemption thanks to Anna, while Admiral Westergaard became a surprise villain.

Fast-forward to the final act: Elsa creates an army of snow monsters to attack our heroes while Kristoff has “a Han Solo moment” and comes to help Anna. To halt Elsa’s attacking army, the two-faced Prince Hans triggers a massive avalanche — not caring that the avalanche also puts Anna, Elsa and all of Arendelle in jeopardy. Anna realizes Elsa is their only hope, so she convinces her to use her powers to save the kingdom (...) Elsa’s heart is then unfrozen allowing her to love again.

At some point, Admiral Westergaard was changed to Prince Hans of the Southern Isles. This is a strange change for a villanous character if you ask me: they not only made him a Disney prince by birth, but also gave him the first name of the author of the original tale. Besides, keeping in mind that the names of the main characters in Frozen are meant to be a Hans Christian Andersen reference (Hans Kristoff Anna Sven), prince Hans would somehow be the most important, because he’s the one who was given the author’s first name. Makes sense, doesn't it?

Oh, but maybe it's just a coincidence.

Besides this, there is the fact that the kingdom’s name, Arendelle, is based in the norwegian town of Arendal. The isles located south of Arendal are, in real life, Denmark. And Hans Christian Andersen was danish. So they gave prince Hans not only the name but also the nationality of the author.

Also a coincidence?

Disney gave us a huge, very important clue with the Frozen Fever map.

On the top left corner there is a map of real Arendall with Denmark on the south; and the Frozen Fever map on the right. It is clear "The Southern Isles" are the danish isles of Fyn and its surroundings.

Hans Christian Andersen was born in Odense, capital city of Fyn.

In the bottom of the picture we see the Egeskov Castle in Fyn, whose tower reminds of the one we see in The Southern Isles in the Frozen Fever map. It looks like it the castle was still under construction in the Frozen Fever map (there are 13 princes, so they need a huge castle I guess!). It's quite hard to me to think all of this is just a coincidence.

But that is not the only Andersen reference. Hans having twelve older brothers reminds of Andersen's tale The Wild Swans. That tale is about a princess who has eleven older brothers. The princess is named Eliza, which reminds of Elsa and, not unlike her, she is taken for a witch and is almost killed for that reason.

It is also known that Disney planned to make a movie about the danish author's life which started developing in the 1940s (the same time period in which they started trying to adapt The Snow Queen).

That project was later abandoned. Nevertheless, Disney has adapted many of the danish author's tales.

So... could it be that when Frozen was finally made, the creators decided to pay homage to the danish author by making him a Disney Prince?

But wait... there is more.

Thanks to @thelittlehansy I knew Hans Christian Andersen himself appeared as an animated character in an episode of The Little Mermaid animated series, called "Metal Fish". So, if Disney already had an animated character design for H.C. Andersen, and Prince Hans was a tribute to the author, it would make sense they would look alike, wouldn't it? They just had to redesign the character to make him look young, regal and handsome. Let's have a look at how did the animated version of the danish author look like. I found the episode in swedish language on Youtube:

They look pretty similar to me. Ginger, big nose, large chin, with sideburns, wears a vest and, in the last scene, a tailcoat. Even the fringe is similar. If you still think all of this is a coincidence I have to disagree. As the Duke would say: The can be no doubt now.

Frozen Fandom: But that's not posible! Making the author a villain, not very important for the story, and the center of silly jokes?! That would be so disrespectful!

Well, I have spent two years trying to prove Frozen makes perfect sense withouth Hans being a bad guy. Santino Fontana said a lot of the scenes he recorded weren't finally included in the movie, so it's safe to think we miss a lot of information about the character. The movie is not badly written; it's too well written in fact: the plotholes are part of the plot.

Frozen Fandom: But Hans is the villain!! He plotted a whole plan to take over the kingdom, took advantage of Anna's vulnerability, leave her to die when she needed him the most and let's not forget almost decapitate Elsa after lying to her about her sister's death.

*Sighs in frustration* All you can accuse Hans of is being a jerk to a dying Anna, being in a very stressfull, life-or-death situation. But let's deny these accusations one by one.

Lying to Elsa about Anna's death: Technically, he wasn't lying, as Anna was dying because of ice magic and Hans though (because of Anna's own words!) Elsa willingly attacked her.

Almost decapitated Elsa: Already explained in the 11th post of this analysis.

Leave Anna to die: Hans was sure there was nothing he - or anyone else - could make to save Anna, and let's not forget the overall situation: people in the kingdom was in inminent risk of dying because of the winter (remember the Duke's words: if we don't "do something" ( = kill Elsa) soon, we all will freeze to death), and he was really shocked (see 9th post of this analysis) to know Elsa had attacked Anna.

Plotted a whole plan to take over the kingdom: The only evidence for this is his own "villain monologue", which I don't think we should take seriously for reasons already explained in the 9th and 12th posts. Telling Anna he wanted to marry her and then arrange "a little accident" of Elsa is more him being a jerk than confessing an evil scheme.

Took advantage of Anna's vulnerability: I have to disagree. I think he manipulated her a bit, but not all of the time. If we look at their "date" from an objective point of view, we realize that for the most part he was just being friendly. Dancing, taking a walk, eating something is not something particularly romantic.

There were not ardent love expressions, he didn't even tell Anna he loved her. Can we really say he "seduced" her? The shoulder bump is romantic? It's more a friendly gesture, that is coded later in the saga as a "sibling thing".

We are led to see the scene in a subjective way, through Anna's eyes. But if we rewacht the scene from an objective point of view, all we see is a friendly interaction.Things don't get really "romantic" until "Love is an Open Door". And let's not forget it's Anna who begins it and this is Hans' first reaction:

Then he basically plays along with her, and at the end of the song - when he proposes to her - that's where the manipulation begins.

Another reason against Hans being a villain would be his facial expressions. He only has facial expressions that could be labeled as villainous in a few scenes (already explained in previous posts). I find it very telling that when he sentences Elsa to death, creators chose to give us a close-up of his face expressing sadness - when a smirk would be more fitting, since this happens after the betrayal scene. It's like they wanted to tell the audience: "No, Hans is not happy to sentence Elsa to death; he is devastated".

Frozen Fandom: He`s faking to the Duke and the dignataries.

It could be, but it's unusual for Disney characters to fake to the audience. Gaston makes villanous expressions since he first appears, so the audience can easily identify him as a villain... but everyone in the town think he's a great guy!

And Mother Gothel... think how interesting would it be if the audience wasn't given the backstory at the beginning of Tangled. But still in that case, we would be able to analize her expressions and realize they are different from those of a worried parent.

Frozen Fandom: well, so who do you think is the villain then?

Simple: there is no real villain in Frozen. But there are two fake villains. This pair.

Before we continue we have to make the following question: who is this Elsa?

But was she the cursed princess to be saved, or the wicked witch to be vanquished? And what was his role in this story? (A particular understanding, by @fasadi)

Elsa: A witch in distress

While most of the audience identifies Elsa as a princess, making Frozen a "two princesses movie", this is only half truth. Anna is "the princess" and real protagonist in Frozen, while her sister shares some traits with other kind of classic Disney characters. Let's see: Elsa...

Is older than the princess

Has magical powers

Lives isolated

Has a position of power (she's the princess heir and becomes the Queen)

Wears heavy make up

Wears purple clothes (her coronation cape) and uses purple eyeshadow

Curses the princess and the kingdom

Her actions have a huge impact on the plot

Has a great (villain) song

Is (almost) killed by the prince

The 13th Disney princess shares these characteristics with these ladies:

From my point of view, the Evil Queen from Snow White is the one that has had the biggest influence in Elsa's look. I found the following description of the Evil Queen on the Disney fandom wiki very fitting for Elsa:

"From the outside, the Queen appears to be calm, regal, and sophisticated, but in reality, this collected and stately facade hides an extremely sadistic, hateful, cold and sinister person" (Elsa's facade is similar and also hides her real self) "The Queen is an icily beautiful woman with a serene, unfeeling face and a slender figure. She has pale skin, red lips, green eyes, and seemingly penciled-on eyebrows"

They both wear a long cape with a pendant. You can't really blame the Duke for thinking Elsa was "a wicked witch conspiring to destroy us all", can you? After all, this is a fairy tale. There has to be a witch!

(Full comic here. A very fun comic showing Hans has all the traits of a classic Disney Prince. I'd love to see something similar with Elsa as a classic Disney Witch!).

At the end of the day, Elsa mortally attacked her sister and almost killed her whole kingdom because she had a massive anxiety attack. But even if she is, technically, a Disney witch and the villain of the movie (in the sense her actions are those of a villain) Elsa is not evil. Her thoughts, feelings and motivations are very different of those of a villain. She can't control her powers and feels unable to cope with the problems she has created, so her response is to run away.

This learned helplessness makes her another classic character: the damsel in distress. Elsa has to be saved from those who want to kill her to end the eternal winter and save the winter. She is first saved by Hans, who risked his own life entering the Ice Castle to save her from the Weselton guards and was able to stop her with a sentence that basically meant "I trust you" (whole analysis in the 7th post) and later saved by Anna. And, just like Hans saved Elsa from killing two men, Anna saved Hans from killing Elsa.

But, just because the audience "knows" Elsa they fail to identify her as the witch of this tale. They fail to understand that the Duke's reaction and prejudices against Elsa were, in fact, quite logic and understable. They fail to understand that (almost) everyone in Arendelle feared Elsa and wanted her dead, so the curse disappeared. The audience has all the information they need to realize Elsa meant no harm but... do the audience has all the information they need to understand Hans' character, and his sudden change at the end of the movie? I'm pretty sure we miss essential information.

Remember my interpretation of the gloves parallel in the analysis of the betrayal scene? One glove off = fake villain reveal. Now look at the Hans and Elsa dolls. "Hero and villain" series, and there are TWO sets of dolls. The first one: Elsa as the Snow Queen (hero), Hans in his fake villain reveal clothes (villain). The second one: they are in their coronation clothes, Elsa as a Queen who is secretly a witch (villain), Hans as the perfect Disney prince (hero). And the looks of complicity are very obvious.

And if Prince Hans' inspiration was the danish author himself, is there some real life woman behind Elsa?

The answer is Yes.

Hans Christian Andersen's inspiration for the Snow Queen was the most important of his (long) list of imposible loves.

Jenny Lind

Johanna Maria "Jenny" Lind (6 October 1820 – 2 November 1887) was a Swedish opera singer, often called the "Swedish Nightingale". One of the most highly regarded singers of the 19th century, she performed in soprano roles in opera in Sweden and across Europe, and undertook an extraordinarily popular concert tour of the United States beginning in 1850. She was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music from 1840.

Yes, I know she doesn't look like Elsa. But still, she was the inspiration for the Snow Queen, and Elsa is inspired on the Snow Queen, so... she somehow "is" Elsa.

From Wikipedia:

She toured Denmark where, in 1843, Hans Christian Andersen met and fell in love with her. Although the two became good friends, she did not reciprocate his romantic feelings. She is believed to have inspired three of his fairy tales: "Beneath the Pillar", "The Angel" and "The Nightingale".[4] He wrote, "No book or personality whatever has exerted a more ennobling influence on me, as a poet, than Jenny Lind. For me she opened the sanctuary of art."[4] The biographer Carol Rosen believes that after Lind rejected Andersen as a suitor, he portrayed her as The Snow Queen with a heart of ice.

One of his stories, "The Nightingale", was written as an expression of his passion for Jenny Lind and became the inspiration for her nickname, the "Swedish Nightingale".[46] Andersen was often shy around women and had extreme difficulty in proposing to Lind. When Lind was boarding a train to go to an opera concert, Andersen gave Lind a letter of proposal. Her feelings towards him were not the same; she saw him as a brother, writing to him in 1844: "farewell ... God bless and protect my brother is the sincere wish of his affectionate sister, Jenny".[47] It is suggested that Andersen expressed his disappointment by portraying Lind as the eponymous anti-heroine of his Snow Queen.[48]

So... if I'm on the right track, and Disney created Prince Hans' character as a tribute to Hans Christian Andersen, wouldn't it make sense they planned to give him the happy ending he did not have in real life?
