What really sold me on Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs was the part of the movie where Snow can't get the shoes off (because deep down she's no longer so sure that she wants to be who she is without them).

It's one of the most realistically accurate scenes I have ever seen in an animated kids' movie.

I think it said something like “Not sure if I can go perform an exorcism with a head the size of Gehenna, bottom text.” I didn’t think until the next day that it probably wasn’t socially-acceptable to tell the Paladin you weren’t coming on a job via Tumblr style memes. When i woke up, i found that he’d printed it out and taped it to the fridge.

My #1 post of 2022

Apparently my best friend has never seen any of the How to Train Your Dragon movies, and I'm due for a rewatch, so we're watching them together.

We're about halfway through the first and there's two things that really stand out to me this time around:

Hiccup is funny. Like, really funny. (Sure, he's funny in the later movies, too, but there's something uniquely amusing about the self-deprecating humor of an awkward and lonely fifteen year old with absolutely no filter. It's great.)

All things considered, Stoick is actually.... a pretty decent parent. I mean, I've been reading a lot of HTTYD fics lately, and many of them portray him as this awful, domineering guy who doesn't care about his son AT ALL until he becomes "useful" or whatever. And watching the OG movie, especially from a more grown-up perspective on things, he's really not all that bad. Sure, he's not exactly getting any 'parent of the year' awards. He's a human, and he makes mistakes, but, considering the circumstances, he really is trying his best.

Hey, Bill? Do you know anything about breaking the... language barrier, so to speak, between humans and pokemon? It's an idea that's always fascinated me, but I've only heard scattered rumors, not enough to confirm or deny. Something about a meowth who taught himself human language keeps cropping up, though? And a young man raised by pokemon as a child? If you know anything of substance, or even just more rumors, I'd love to hear it!

It’s actually something I’ve been studying on the side. One of my dreams as an inventor, in fact, is to break that language barrier and enable humans and pokémon to share their thoughts, hopes, and dreams freely with one another.

That having been said, I can tell you about the practical details as they stand at the moment. First, all pokémon can understand each other, as if they themselves speak a universal language. This isn’t to say they understand one another via body language or whatnot. This is to say that they have their own spoken language that every species seems to understand, regardless of what form that language comes in. This is the first key to better understanding how language between our species works.

The other half of the equation is that it is indeed possible for humans to interpret that language. In a sense, anyway. Ignoring the very real ability some unique individuals have for understanding the pokémon language as if it’s Common, it’s possible to interpret what a pokémon might be trying to say simply by understanding their body language and tone of voice. It’s true that the longer you own a pokémon, the more likely you are to be able to understand what different vocalizations or motions mean, even if you don’t understand their literal speech. But it’s also possible for a human to pick up cues even with pokémon they barely know, if you know what to look for. Of course, it’s important and rather obvious to point out that you won’t be able to understand a pokémon’s spoken language, which is what you’re likely asking about, and at best, you might only be able to guess what a pokémon is trying to say because very few wild pokémon have the ability or desire to sign. But it is meant to say that the language barrier is at least approachable for us humans at the current moment. Whether or not we can cross it as a species is still a challenge we have yet to surmount, but I believe it’s possible, perhaps through technology.

As for the rumors concerning pokémon who can speak Common and humans who can speak the pokémon’s language, both are actually ... very true. Or at least, I may not be able to verify the specific cases you’re talking about, but there are plenty of documented cases of both. Some pokémon known to have spiritual or psychic abilities have also been known to develop the ability to speak to humans the more powerful they become. Likewise, bird pokémon that can be taught to mimic speech (such as chatot and murkrow) eventually learn how to put the words they’ve learned together into coherent thoughts, though not all of them can do this. The talking meowth is also very real, but no researcher has ever gotten close enough to it to fully document its abilities.

Meanwhile, humans who have the ability to understand what pokémon are saying are called pokémon interpreters. It’s an extremely rare ability that up until recently has been thought to only occur among people of Johtonian descent, particularly those born in Violet City or Azalea Town. However, recent information has uncovered an interpreter who apparently is from Unova, so suffice to say, we don’t entirely understand the origins of this ability. Still, it should be noted that a very, very small percentage of the human population is known to have this ability; it’s actually more common to be telepathic than to be an interpreter, to be honest.
