The most mouth watering, most deliciously rich black comedy has opened shop again, dare I say it my favourite musical; Sweeney Todd!
For any international fan of Sweeney Todd this is for you. This is a show who’s translation has been such an honour and burden to tackle, and quite different from what and how I have usually translated. Sweeney Todd to me is such a terribly smart and lyrically perfect show so it gives me a lot of anxiety to post this actually,,, but I wanted to show how fun and interesting the Korean production has turned out and wanted to share it with all of you!

hmm not a fan of korea’s 2022 staging of epiphany, they have sweeney threatening lovett and lovett reacting with fear. that is not the dynamic. I like korea’s 2007 staging with sweeney basically climbing out of the window and wailing and shrieking and throwing himself to the ground and lovett walking up to him like sooooo you done or

3, 8, and 28
3. 3 movies I could watch forever and not get tired of?
Yay I get to pick 3 more lol. Sweeney Todd, Coraline, and Silence of the Lambs.
8. Any reacquiring dreams?
Tbh I’m not sure if this means dreams like in my head at night while I sleep, or like lifelong dreams. I’ll go with sleepy dreams, and say no, because I never remember my dreams.
28. Do I collect anything?
I have a ridiculous collection of coffee/drink cups. It started when I worked at Starbucks for 4 years, and now I collect a “you are here mug” when I go somewhere new. And I have friends and family get me mugs from places they go. I have a Starbucks mug from the big roastery in Milan, Italy my brother got me, a Starbucks mug from South Korea my friend brought back to me, and then several from different states here in the US. And then many, many more. I also collect different kinds of coffees. But I go through them quickly lol. As I’m packing my house, I counted 6 boxes dedicated to coffee and coffee paraphernalia alone.
Ask me!

What a handsome man he is after all.
I think if there was a musical Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street in Korea again, he would definitely play it.

Unfortunately, exact weekend totals are unknown but it is estimated at $6 million raising its international total to $43 million so far. It would need to lost more than 40% from last week's total and that's not taking into account its openings in South Korea at $1,515,672 and second place, its $110,000, third place debut in Finland, $86,000 in Russia, $50,000, second place debut in Hong Kong. Overall the film brought in $3 million on 1,200 screens in 40 markets for a international box office of $136.4 million.Īfter gathering in all the data the winner for the race for fifth place is Million Dollar Baby, I think. Bad news, it dropped 37% during its second weekend in the market, which is really steep for Japan. The film remained in top spot in Japan with $2,330,027 on 349 screens for a $9,011,671 running tally in the market. It was a good news, bad news kind of weekend for Constantine. International: Constantine Continues to Climb The film now has $90.3 million internationally and could break $100 million if it continues to show strong legs in Japan. Golden Week helped Shall We Dance? climb 19% to $2,250,195 for the weekend and $7,270,348 during its run. There are several that are worth picking up, but only Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Baker Street - 2-Disc Special Edition was a contender for DVD Pick of the Week. Part II can be found here.Ī mixed week when it comes to top-notch releases and there were very few that caught my eye. On a side note, it is another week where we had to split the list into two due to the size. But I am also giving an honorable mention to Two Fat Ladies - Buy from Amazon. But the best of the best, and the DVD Pick of the Week is Stargate - Continuum - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray. There are also a couple of special edition releases that are easily worth picking up: Dark City - Director's Cut - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray and WarGames - 25th Anniversary Edition. Granted, many will find Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay worth picking up, but it is not a top-notch release. The bold credits above the line are the "above-the-line" credits, the other the "below-the-line" credits.Īnother slow week without a single first run release that was a must have, or even a contender for DVD Pick of the Week. Production and Technical Credits Danny Leiner New Line Cinema, Senator Entertainment, Kingsgate Films, Endgame Entertainmentįor a description of the different acting role types we use to categorize acting perfomances, see our Glossary. Autobiography by Jason Yi
My name is Jason Yi and I was born on November 7th, 2000. I lived in California most of my life with my family. Both of my parents were born in South Korea and they moved to the US around the 1980s. I graduated high school in 2018 with a GPA of 3.6. I am majoring in Criminal Justice in SFSU.

I like to describe myself as a quiet person. Whenever I meet someone new, they would notice that I don’t talk much. But that is only because I like to listen to the person and learn something about them. Once I know more about them, I would share something about me. Sometimes I don’t like to share my sense of humor with other people because I’m afraid that they wouldn’t understand it and they might think that I’m too weird. I am also an open minded person. I like to learn and understand other people’s opinions whether it’s political or religious views. I believe that everyone should be more open minded because sometimes we tend to act hostile to anyone who has different opinions.
I like to draw as a hobby. I’m not really good at it, I still need to improve my skills, but I think that some of the things I draw are decent. I mostly like to draw military soldiers, knight, and sometimes superheroes. Whenever I draw new characters, I would come up a background story for that character. So far I have drawn characters that fought in WW3, fighting against a demon army, and fighting a war that last for over 100 years( So, yeah theirs a lot of fighting in my stories) Here is my most recent drawing:
Tumblr media
I like to watch movies. My favorite movies are Schindler’s List, Beauty and the beast(the good one), Saving Private Ryan, and The Lord of The Rings trilogy. I mostly like to watch war movies like Fury, Saving Private Ryan, and 1917. I enjoy the historical aspect of these films and I also find them exciting and epic. Sometimes when I watch films based on historical events, I would do some research after watching it because I want to know if everything I watch from the movie was true. I don’t like to be misinformed on things that I don’t know or I will feel like an idiot. I also like watching movie musicals. My favorite movie musicals are Sweeney Todd, Les Miserables, La La Land, and most of Disney animated films.
Currently I am still a student in SFSU and I hope that I would graduate by 2022.

I’m currently trying to find a production of Sweeney Todd that played in Korea a while back that for some reason was largely performed in English. I have very distinct memories of watching videos of it, like how they staged Mrs. Lovett’s death and a bit of “A Little Priest,” but I can’t find any record that it existed. Does anyone have proof of its existence? I may have gotten the country wrong, but I can’t find anything about an East Asian production of the show that was performed in English.

My interpretation of Sweeney Todd.
In 1810 a South Korean woman called Yook Soonee came to London as a ship stowaway in search of a new life. During this time period, South Korea was dubbed the “hermit kingdom,” for its reluctance to engage in relations with the outside world. Upon arriving in London, Yook Soonee caught the eye of London-born landlord, Henry Barker. He thought she was “exotic” and was interested in getting to know her just because he had never seen someone of “her kind” before.
In 1812, they had a son out of wedlock and Henry tried to be open to the idea. He even named him Benjamin, hoping that giving the baby a biblical name would help him feel more attached. He decided to abandon Yook Soonee, pretending that he’d never known the “crazy wench”, but took their son in the hopes of raising him to take over in managing his properties when he retires. Not long after she was abandoned, Yook Soonee unfortunately succumbed to Typhus Fever after being forced to live in terrible conditions.
Benjamin was raised by his father, but the two didn’t connect. They often butt heads due to Henry disliking Benjamin’s strong personality and sense of self. He tried to send him off to a boarding school, but it was clear that Benjamin couldn’t stay there due to the frequent fights he’d find himself in with other children. These fights always started because his peers were racist towards him and Benjamin refused to let it happen. From the age of nine to thirteen, Benjamin was home-schooled.
At thirteen, he announced that he had no desire to be a landlord like his father. Instead, he wished to become a barber. He was fascinated with everything to do with the profession and was intrigued by how the razors worked. He manged to get hold of a razor and a pair of scissors after stealing them from a shop. With them, he would practice his craft for hours on mannequin heads and wigs. His father knew he couldn’t talk sense into the boy if he didn’t let him “get it out of his system”, so he allowed his hobby. However, that hobby grew into a passion and so did Benjamin’s skills. By the age of fifteen, he had started to practice his craft on homeless people by offering food in return. It was at this point that he began to practice the delicate art of shaving as well.
Henry wished for Benjamin to find a wife and settle down as soon as he became eighteen. While Benjamin had nothing against women, he didn’t intend to marry so young. He was much too invested in starting his own barber shop and managed to do so with the help of his exasperated father’s connections. The shop was opened above a bakery that belonged to the Wood family (the parents of Amelia Lovett) His business, reputation, and skillset continued to grow until the age of twenty-three.
This was where everything began to fall apart in Benjamin’s life.
An upper-class man called Judge Turpin was someone who lusted after young women — far younger than himself — and often stalked the ones he desired. One of his targets was a blonde woman who he managed to corner in an alleyway near Fleet Street. Benjamin heard her screams from his shop and rushed to her rescue. He threatened to fetch the police on Turpin, saying that he didn’t care if he was judge — nobody was above the law.
Unfortunately, Turpin had friends in the law that were just as corrupt as he was. This resulted in Benjamin being arrested for assault despite him never actually attacking anyone. Turpin gave testimony that said he had been attacked by a “laughing madman wielding sharp razors.”
Due to his position in society, evidence was planted by his friends in high places. Nobody questioned his lack of injuries or even brought in an attorney for Benjamin. As expected, racism played a large part in the case against Benjamin. After a lengthy trial process, in the end, Benjamin was deemed unfit for society and suffering from psychosis by a doctor brought in by none other than Judge Turpin himself. Benjamin was shipped to a mental institute in Australia. It’s here he spends the next fifteen years of his life, dreaming of revenge against Turpin...
In 1850, an Australian lawyer took an interest in his life and, through a lot of work, he was finally released. He took the next boat back to London and found himself back in the wretched city he’d come to loathe. After losing a long stretch of his life thanks to the man still in power there, Benjamin completely discarded his old identity and took on a new one: Sweeney Todd.
He returned to his old shop on Fleet Street only to find that the entire building (bakery and barber shop) was now fully owned by a landlady called Mrs. Amelia Lovett. The two meet officially for the first time despite knowing of each other’s existence fifteen years ago. They agree to work together to rid London of the scum that rules its streets...

This one seemed fun since I miss traveling
survey by –rainboweyes–
When you think of this country, what first comes to your mind?
Argentina: Patagonia
Brazil: Football/soccer. I did a report on Pele in elementary school.
Canada: Toronto. I went there in 8th grade. One of my first times outside the country.
Denmark: I’m literally blanking right now.
England: Definitely the music. The Beatles and Queen are two of my favorite bands.
France: Paris. And how people keep telling me to watch Emily in Paris.
Germany: Munich. Beer. Football again lol.
Hungary: I didn’t know what to expect when I visited Budapest. I really enjoyed it and there’s some beautiful architecture. However, there’s a lot of corruption over there and there is a lot of poverty in Budapest, not sure about the rest of the country.
Ireland: My time studying abroad there and how much I loved it. The people are hilarious and some of the kindest people you’ll meet.
Italy: Florence, Venice, and Rome. Also the art, whether that’s the Vatican, David, or any of the other museums.
Jamaica: My catholic high school did a mission trip there. I never went though because we didn’t exactly have money for it.
Japan: Tokyo and the fashion.
Korea: Skincare lmao.
Libya: I honestly don’t know enough about it.
Morocco: How colorful it is.
Norway: Northern lights. lol same.
Poland: Pączki. and how sad I don’t live in Michigan now lmao. I didn’t get any on Fat Tuesday.
Romania: Isn’t Black Widow from there?
Russia: Moscow. Which makes me think of the Queen’s Gambit and how great that sow is and how I need to actually finish the book.
Spain: I’ve been saving a lot pictures of Spain on pinterest. I wish I had made it over there when I was abroad.
Tunisia: I feel so dumb but nothing.
Turkey: All that political shit from like 2018 and 2019. I should research this since I’m not sure what the current situation is. Also the Byzantine Empire. I guess something from high school was actually retained.
Uganda: There was this children’s choir from Uganda and our school “adopted” one of the kids to send him money and new school uniforms and whatnot.
United States of America: Lol my home country. It’s a complete shit show politically, but I hope to visit the national parks.
United Kingdom: I don’t like how England and the United Kingdom are both on here as if the person who wrote this doesn’t know England is in the UK. However, I think of Scotland.
Australia: Kangaroos.
New Zealand: The climate.
List 3 movies you like in each genre.
Action: I don’t really watch action movies besides superhero movies.
Comedy: 22 Jump Street, Elf, Superbad
Drama: Imitation Game, Good Will Hunting, Forrest Gump
Fantasy: Star Wars, Harry Potter, The Princess Bride
Horror: Sinister is the only “true” horror movie I like. I also like Sweeney Todd but that’s more of a musical.
Kids/Animated: Hercules, Mulan, Tangled
Romance: The Notebook, When Harry Met Sally, Dirty Dancing
Sci-Fi: Okay so Star Wars should probably be here. I hate movie questions I don’t know genres.
Thriller: Lol I don’t watch these.
Western: Again, I don’t watch these.
Answer just in numbers.
Number of brothers you have: 2
Number of sisters you have: 1
Number of the house you live at: It’s an apartment
Number of close friends you have: Like 2 or 3
Number of pets you have: 0 because technically my dog is my parents dog and she lives with them.
Number of times you shower a week: 5 or 6.
Number of concerts you’ve been to in your life: I’m just guessing because I don’t feel like thinking but I believe 6.
Number of cars your household has: 1
Number of serious relationships you’ve been in: 2
Number of movies you’ve seen at the cinema this year: 0 lol.
Number of people who live in your house: 1, myself.
Number of plug sockets in the room you’re in now: 4 but only 3 of them actually work lol.
Some more randomer questions.
What food do you have cravings for the most? Mexican food for sure.
What TV shows do you hate to miss on TV? I don’t remember the last time I actually watched a weekly show. Well right now the Mandalorian gets a new episode every Friday but I wait until Sundays to watch it because it’s a nice little ritual.
What do you tend to lose the most? Chapsticks or my keys lol.
The last time someone shouted at you - why were they shouting? My mom was pissed at me for something but I don’t remember why.
Would you rather have a cactus or a bonsai? Cactus.
What scary story freaks you out the most? I can’t think of one.
Are you better with gadgets or cooking? Lol gadgets. I suck at cooking
How would you rate your own looks? Personality? Like a 5 or 6 for both lol.
What accent is the most attractive? French accents, when speaking English.
Do you get annoyed when people spell your name wrong? No. I grew up with everyone knowing my last name and the second they hear it they asked who my parents are lol. (big family lol) So it’s nice living somewhere where people don’t necessarily know it and they might compliment it because it’s unique to them lol.
