Every photo was available publicly on twitter and I have credited the posters, but please be respectful and don’t draw undue attention to these fans. If anyone contacts me wishing for their photo to be removed, I will do so.

Ashido: "Cuteness is justice!" Todoroki: "Cuteness is justice? Then this Kannon is a good omen for heroes." Asui: "'Cuteness' is profound, too."
Class 1-A is visiting Sado Island's Chokokuji Temple, where a 20-foot tall rabbit statue has been erected to show appreciation for the temple's domestic rabbits tended by the priests, who roam the grounds freely. Just behind Todoroki actually stands a second, much smaller rabbit statue. The goddess of mercy, Kannon, is carved into the rabbits' chests.

Tokoyami: "The torrential flow of power liberated from prohibition... Those of us who have freed a once-sealed power feel the same, don't we, Todoroki?" Todoroki: "No, not particularly."

This is Omicho Market in Kanazawa, the capital of Ishikawa, a very busy market with fresh seafood, vegetables, fruit, and local specialties!

Izuku: "Sauce katsudon originates in Fukui prefecture! ︎ The deep flavor comes from the sour sauce seeping into the cutlet! You could say the sauce is saving the cutlet, and the cutlet is saving the sauce. It's a food that embodies the concept of being able to save to win and win to save. I don't think it's an exaggeration to call it the soul food of heroes. Ahhh! I can't stop thinking that I want everyone in Japan to know more about this..." Uraraka: "He's saying it's tasty."
One of Fukui's specialties is "sauce katsudon" wherein the pork cutlet is battered, coated in crumbs, deep fried, and then coated in a thick, sweet, tangy, savory sauce. "Katsu" means cutlet but it is phonetically identical to the word for win--the same one that's in Katsuki's name. Izuku is such a nerd, dear god. Special thanks to @pikahlua for saving my skin with Izuku's dreaded mumble-speech!

Mirio: "There's... A RIPE PEACH! There's... RIPE GRAPES!" Kaminari: "The Yamanashi Prefecture Tourism Ambassador Hero...!" Sero: "Have we got a chance!?" Kirishima: "Sempai, you went out of your way just for this!?"
Yamanashi is one of Japan's big fruit providers with many orchards and vineyards, specializing in grapes, plums, and peaches. Mount Fuji is visible in the background! But Mirio... what were the ripe grapes!?

Iida: "Everyone!! Assemble here for a group photo!!" Uraraka: "Let's all do the gasshō pose, okay!!" Sero: "That's great!!"
The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-gō and Gokayama are part of a World Heritage Site protecting the traditional gasshō-zukuri houses unique to the area. The style is named for the arch of the roof looking like hands in prayer; the area gets substantial snowfall every year, and the shape of the roof and structure of the walls are optimal for protecting the integrity of the house. I got to see and step inside this style of home at the Japan Open-Air Folk Museum, and they are absolutely incredible. The informational placards said that in years when the snow piles high enough, the second story windows are used as entrances!
Shizuoka

Yaoyorozu: "The reason Mount Fuji looks blue is because its size is so great that one must view it at a distance. This distance puts a thick layer of air in-between, scattering the light and causing the mountain's surface to appear blue. The sky is blue for the same reason." Ashido: "Yaomomo's like a walking encyclopedia!" Aoyama: "A beautiful blue mountain, you say? Why, there's one right here~!"
Viewing Mount Fuji from Shizuoka's famous tea fields. Shizuoka provides 40% of Japan's green tea! I've had a few varieties unique to their area, they were very flavorful and soothing. Aoyama is bein' vain because his surname means "blue mountain."

Satou: "All right, all right, now this is what I've been waiting for!" Yaoyorozu: "It's delicious!" Todoroki (thinking): "Half-Sweet Half-Salt..."
They are eating Ogura toast, a dish originating in a Nagoya cafe in 1921. Ogura jam is a sweet spread made out of adzuki beans, and it is often served with butter -- the butter being salted is the source of Todoroki's stroke of genius. I've had it several times, it's tasty!!
That's all for Day 3! See you soon for Day 4.

Today I bring  you more more Varré headcanons for fic development based on these prompts by @wisteria-lodge
What is the character’s go-to drink order?
Red wine. Preferably a type of the Negroamaro variety, as it is the type of grape that grew on his family's vineyard. He likes the dark color and rich flavor, so he will also order a Rosé blend of this variety. For a cocktail, he would order a Café Brûlot.
1. Because it is fancy and showy, and he would want to show off a bit at a nice place.
2. Because it has coffee in it and it will help keep him awake and also show his guests he is a man that needs coffee to stay awake. (he works hard and needs people to know this)
3. Because it’s got the same strong, sweet flavors he enjoys.
What is their grooming routine?
Varré has never been one to take care of his physical appearance overmuch. He was pressured a lot as a young man by his family and father to always look presentable and he developed a bit  of opposition to that growing up. He never goes out of his way to look bad or dirty mind you - he just doesn’t put in a lot of effort to take care of his personal appearance or himself. He cares more about his work and his passions than his well-being and will frequently run himself ragged or crash. He will pull his hair back so it's out of his eyes, and shave so he isn’t irritated by a beard. He will bathe when he smells bad enough, and fix up his clothes when they are too torn or dirty, so it might be best to say his approach is practical.
He will take utmost care of his mask, though. To him, the mask symbolizes his role in Mohg’s dynasty. Before the dynasty, the mask still mattered a lot to him and was a symbol of the role he played in the war and how he was trying to do what he felt was good work. His image is more important than him.
More specifically in terms of how he grooms himself:
He wakes up in the morning and dresses if he hasn’t slept in his clothes. He will splash water on his face and tie back his hair. Then he will carefully put on his mask and arrange his veil. He doesn’t often brush or wash his hair, it really only happens when he also needs to shave. He smells pretty bad up close, but he does keep a rose-scented perfume he makes himself and wears it liberally to cover the stench of blood.
What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go?
The time he paid an exorbitant price for an "exotic" prostitute at the highest-class brothel in the capital, while drunk, to prove a point.
The Perfumer’s tools and blood rose seeds to start his garden and make his perfumes.
The outfit he wore to the gala at his father’s estate to celebrate his nephew’s birthday.
His disposable income went to alcohol and books, mostly, sometimes  gambling, and food. In the dynasty he doesn’t get paid, so he doesn’t have much disposable income, what he  does have, he uses for books.
Do they have any scars or tattoos?
He has scars on his hands, wrists, and arms from cutting himself with surgical tools and on rose thorns, mostly from his time in Leyndell and as a war surgeon. He has the Mohgwyn spear symbol carved into his back from Mohg’s claws, and the symbol on his forehead that he carved himself when he was fully initiated into the dynasty.
What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances?
Varré cries infrequently, usually it’s from an overwhelming frustration combined with a lack of sleep. If his stress is extremely high, he will first try to deal with it directly, and with violence or threats. If that doesn’t help, he will drink or kill about it. His last resort is to cry. The last time he cried was likely over his state of emotional distress regarding his apparent abandonment by Mohg while he was bleeding out (combined with his loss of favor), his crisis of faith, and his conflicting emotions (regarding Envy).
Are they the oldest, middle, youngest, or only child?
Middle child. He has an elder brother named Artan and a younger sister named Emina
Describe the shoes they’re wearing.
Sturdy, leather boots. He keeps them partially folded down to allow for more freedom of movement, but they are always laced tight. They are worn and dirty, but well-made. He had them made while living in Leyndell in the style of the cobblers from his town. They are of unusually high quality for someone who worked as a surgeon. He really only has this one pair of boots so he does take care of them as needed.
Describe the place where they sleep.
In the dynasty, his room is fairly bare, as he shares sleeping quarters with the other war surgeons. He has his own space quartered off with a folding screen and a velvet curtain draped from a ceiling beam for some privacy. His bed has the standard linen sheets given to all surgeons, and a small side table with some candles. He has spent the extra money to buy himself more candles and has stacked them so they’ve formed a solid section of wax- he just continues to add candles. He also has a candelabra in the corner for some extra light. He keeps his clothing and personal belongings in an iron banded wooden chest- this is the chest he’s had since boyhood and it bears his family crest (that has been sanded off). He keeps a stack of books on his side table and near the foot of his bed and has a threadbare carpet on the floor. His walls have no adornment, as their rooms are in the abandoned dynasty complex and already have ancient carvings on them.
What is their favorite holiday?
Varré was never religious and disliked the holidays imposed by the Golden Order. The dynasty has no holidays, and won’t have any until the day Miquella arises to godhood. That being said, he always enjoyed the spring festival dedicated to the saint of love which was a local tradition in his town. He loved the flowers and the romance of it all as a boy, and as a man, he has sort of co-opted it and folded it into his belief system from the dynasty.
What objects do they always carry around with them?
He always carries his weapons: the rose bouquet, miséricorde, sacred seal, and throwing knives. He has a satchel with his surgeon's tools, a silver dagger, and a pouch with herbs and medicines. Varré tends to travel light and doesn’t keep anything but the necessities on him. If he needs food, he will generally return to the dynasty, or he will have some pre-prepared things to tide him over. He dislikes hunting and will only do it if absolutely necessary.

Pecan Day
These buttery, versatile gems can be sprinkled on salads, baked into pies or cakes, or simply enjoyed as a snack.
Whether eaten on their own or included as part of a myriad of creations in the kitchen, the pecan tree yields a versatile nut that is the only naturally occurring major nut tree in North America. While they began in the US, they have since been planted on every continent except for Antarctica. Even so, it is still estimated that 80% of the world’s supply of pecans comes from the United States.
Healthful and delicious, pecans are a treat that has an interesting history as well as a tasty future!
History of Pecan Day
Pecans have a documented history that dates back to the 16th century, although they were likely around long before that, growing in the wild. This tree grows well near water and the nuts are easy to get the meat from the shell. As the pecan is native to the southern parts of North America, it is sometimes called “America’s own nut.”
The first cultivated planting of a pecan tree in the United States is recorded to have taken place in 1772 in Long Island, New York. Not long afterwards, on March 25,1775, a pecan tree was planted by George Washington at his Mount Vernon estate. That particular tree’s famous roots grow even deeper as the sapling was gifted to him by Thomas Jefferson, who had planted a few pecan trees from the southern US at his own estate in Monticello, VA.
During this same period, settlers used community gardens to plant pecan trees along the Gulf Coast in the southern parts of the United States, eventually leading to the growth of this important industry. By 1919, Texas had honored the Pecan tree by making it into its state tree. While contested by some, Albany, Georgia, is considered by many to be the pecan capital of the United States, boasting over 600,000 pecan trees in the locale.
Pecan Day was established to celebrate this deciduous tree that was enjoyed by the founding fathers of the United States and continues to be shared with the world. First cultivated by Native Americans, it has been transplanted to other countries around the planet, but has failed to achieve as wide of use or popularity outside of the United States.
In any case, the pecan is a nut that is certainly worth celebrating anywhere in the world, and Pecan Day is the best day to do so!
How to Celebrate Pecan Day
Just a little bit of thought can encourage people to come up with all kinds of creative ways to show their love for pecans – like grabbing a handful to munch on, adding them to salads, making a delightful pecan pie, eating pecan crusted fish for dinner, or having pecan ice cream!
Take part in celebrating Pecan Day by using some of the following ideas, or come up with some creative ones of your own in honor of the day:
Throw a Pecan Day Party
Invite some friends and family over and share the joy by throwing a fun Pecan Day party! Pecans are a wonderful party snack that can be served in a variety of styles such as popular praline-flavoured pecans. Pecans are extremely versatile because they work with many different flavors, whether sweet or savory, spicy or mild.
Delectable items that could happily be served at a Pecan Day party include:
Pecan Pie (a pastry pie crust with corn syrup and pecan filling)
Pralines (nuts coated in sugar, corn syrup, milk and butter)
Pecan-crusted Fish (tilapia, salmon, trout, halibut, or others)
Pecan Turtles (candy treat with chocolate and caramel)
Pecan Shortbread Cookies
Chicken Salad Sandwiches (made with pecans, grapes and mayonnaise)
For more recipes, try the website for the American Pecan Council, offering not only recipe ideas but much more information about the entire pecan industry.
Grow a Pecan Tree
Plant a lovely and productive pecan tree to make it a memorable day to always come back to. If planting a sapling, it may take an average of 6-7 years to see a yield of nuts, so it’s a long-term investment to wait for the harvest. But certainly, it’s a worthwhile investment that is good for providing food as well as putting oxygen back into the air and doing something good for the earth.
Practice Pronouncing Pecan
North America is a large place with many different subcultures and local accents. The Pecan is just one of many words that is pronounced differently depending on the location. It’s a highly debated topic that has a lot to do with the divide between north and south in the United States.
One legitimate pronunciation of the word is: “puh-KAHN”. The accent is on the second syllable and it is pronounced with the jaw dropped.
But another, equally legitimate, way to pronounce the word is: “PEE-can”. Here, the accent is on the first syllable and the mouth makes a wide smile while saying it.
The first pronunciation is particularly northern and the second is southern but also could be related to whether people live in the city or in rural areas.
Considering that the trees first grew in the south, it’s possible that the second is the correct pronunciation. However, going further back, the nut was actually named from an Algonquin (Native American) word that described “nuts which required a stone to crack them”.
So, it’s likely that neither of the above pronunciations is exactly correct and an Algonquin Native American would need to be consulted to find out the true pronunciation!
Share the Health Benefits of Pecans
When making treats out of pecans and sharing them at a party, don’t forget to tell friends and family about the nutritional value that pecan nuts can bring. Check out these health benefits that pecans can provide, including:
Protein, Healthy Fats, and Fiber that help with energy
Important Vitamins and Minerals including Iron, Copper, Manganese, Zinc, Vitamin E, and Phosphorus
Ability to lower LDL cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol levels in the blood
Contains Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium to help reduce blood pressure
Acts as a healthy snack to replace sugary snacks, which helps those with diabetes and heart health issues
A good sources of healthy, Omega 3 Fats that can help to reduce inflammation pain that leads to problems such as arthritis
Filled with antioxidants that can help to protect the cells from damage
Buy a Nutcracker
The pecans that are purchased in-store have been packaged and processed but, for people who are serious about pecans, it might be fun to buy the whole nuts and crack them at home.
Nutcrackers can come in all shapes and sizes, from the very functional to kitschy and decorative. Sometimes they come in a set, with different levers, tongs, and ratchets, that can be used in different capacities.
For purists and die-hard pecan lovers, it might be worthwhile to invest in an electric nutcracker. But those who prefer a more rudimentary method can use a hammer or mallet to crack open the outer shell. Pliers could also work as a way to crack the nutshell. Then, once it is open, use a fork or other sharp object to pick out the nutmeat. And enjoy!

Despite this, curiosity in Mustard had declined within the 1700s, partly due to the introduction of latest spices from the Far East. In 1856, Jean Naigeon of Dijon, France substituted verjus (the acidic juice from not fairly ripe grapes) for vinegar in prepared mustard. Thus Dijon Mustard, the smooth gourmet mustard recipes, less-acidic Mustard was born and created renewed interest in the condiment. This secured Dijon, France because the world's capital of Mustard. The Jewish History of Bazooka Bubble Gum
From a penny candy business to a global cult sensation.
Chew on this: One of America’s most iconic gum brands was originally a Jewish-owned tobacco business.
In 1891, Morris Chigorinsky emigrated from Russia to the United States, where in the early 1900s he assumed control of the American Leaf Tobacco Company. But by 1938, Chigorinsky’s (who by then had changed his surname to Shorin) business was flailing. His four sons, Abram, Ira, Joseph and Philip decided to save the family from certain penury by starting a new penny candy business, Topps Chewing Gum, Inc., whose name was borrowed from an eponymous Chattanooga candy company they purchased.
Following the end of the Second World War, the Shorin brothers aggressively set about supplanting their then-dominant competitor Dubble Bubble, manufactured by Fleer, through the launch of Bazooka Bubble Gum. The gum cleverly capitalized on the nation’s post-war patriotic pride in the wake of their recent victory, not only via its name (derived from the rocket-propelled weapon invented and deployed by American troops) but also through its red, white and blue packaging.
The product sold well, but in 1953, Topps made an alteration to the design that proved to be a game changer: the inclusion of small comic strips starring Bazooka Joe, a swashbuckling kid who donned a black eye patch and got into various scrapes and adventures with his crew of streetwise companions. The wrappers (of which there were ultimately over 1,500 manufactured) also featured fortunes and immediately became a collector’s items among consumers and candy enthusiasts, who still vigorously buy and sell vintage strips on online auction websites. While the original flavor continues to be the bestseller, Topps has also introduced variations, such as Grape Rage, Cherry Berry and Watermelon Whirl.
In 2012, Bazooka discontinued the inclusion of comics in favor of “brainteaser” wrappers and subsequently found themselves in a sticky situation. Loyalists were displeased and chewed out corporate honchos for the most unwelcome change. In 2019, Topps responded to the call to adhere to the original look by issuing a Throwback Pack intended to be “inspired by the brand’s iconic original packaging” with “nostalgic 1980s graphics and Original flavor Bazooka Bubble Gum wrapped in classic comics.”
Testaments to Bazooka’s enduring popularity have bubbled up over the years in sitcoms such as “How I Met Your Mother,” “Seinfeld” and “King of Queens.” The candy made a particularly sweet cameo in an episode of “30 Rock,” in which NBC exec Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) erroneously and hilariously claimed Bazooka’s founder inherited a quarry of pink rocks, then baked them to transform them into gum.

Pecan Day
Whether eaten on their own or included as part of a myriad of  creations in the kitchen, the pecan tree yields a versatile nut that is  the only naturally occurring major nut tree in North America.
And enjoy!

July 18th is...
Caviar Day - Caviar is Sturgeon fish eggs. There are several species of Sturgeon fish.  As a result, the caviar produced varies in colors depending on the species. Caviar is full of protein and vitamins making the delicacy a healthy meal. The United States led distribution at 600 tons per year until around 1900. However, due to the over-harvesting of Sturgeon fish for the caviar, the U.S. banned harvesting for a time to protect the sturgeon fish from becoming extinct. The population has never recovered sufficiently since the ban, resulting in caviar’s continued status as a luxury item. Since then, harvesting, import, and export are restricted.
Ice Cream Day - Thousands of years ago, people in the Persian Empire put snow in a bowl, poured concentrated grape juice over it, and ate it as a treat. Even when the weather was hot, they would savor this sweet treat. Their trick? They placed snow in underground chambers known as yakchal where the temperatures kept the snow from melting. The Persians also hiked to the mountain tops by their summer capital to gather snowfall. The Chinese, under the Tang Dynasty around 697 AD, took to freezing dairy with salt and ice. However, the results aren’t exactly the ice cream we enjoy today. Frozen treats and beverages later, culinary folks point to Naples, Italy as the birthplace of the first ice cream. They give credit to Antonio Latini. He was born in 1642 and created a milk-based sorbet.
Nelson Mandela Day - He was an anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and activist. Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first black head of state. He served as President of the country from 1994 to 1999. During his leadership, Mandela focused on dismantling apartheid. He did so by tackling institutionalized racism and fostering racial recognition.
Sour Candy Day -  In the candy world, sour candy is the young, energetic, and fun member of the candy family. It awakens the taste buds and adds a punch of youthful energy. Every flavor combination out there creates a dazzling taste sensation.

@alienfuckeronmain tagged me in this and I almost missed it because tumblr didn’t notify me! What a website! Anyway I love these things here we go
rules: tag nine people you want to get to know better/catch up with!
favourite colour: Purple! All kinds of purple! I think it is a peculiarly queer, and peculiarly excessive color. It is never the most correct color for any ocassion
currently reading: Cycle of the Werewolf by Stephen King-It’s Stephen Kingy *shrugs*; Beauty by Robin McKinley, this is my favorite Beauty and the Beast novel; The King of Crows by Libba Bray, this is the fourth and last book in a series called The Diviners, I highly recommend it; Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse, fantasy setting is based on pre-Columbian Americas, also highly recommended and I hope it has a sequel; Octavia’s Brood, a collection of science fiction stories by activists and while I get the project um…21st century activist-essay language often clunks severely when it shows up in dialogue.
last song: Actually don’t know what I last listened to but I’ve had “I’m Looking For A Miracle” by Albert and Gage stuck in my head quite loudly for a while
last movie: Sour Grapes, which is a documentary about wine fraud, objectively the best crime. The movie was not as much on the side of the fraudster as I wanted it to be. I think more people should commit wine fraud. Look. The point of wine is to taste good and get you drunk. If someone thinks they need to spend $20,000 or more on a bottle of wine to do that, they deserve to have their money stolen.
last series: Finished? She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Series with an episode I watched most recently? Penny Dreadful. OMG this show sucks but I’m watching it with friends. There are elements that I would be into but the show is doing them all in the worst/dumbest way. HOW
sweet, spicy or savory: I’ll go with savory though I really find questions like this very difficult. There are different moods and occasions for all flavors!
craving: The opening of the US-Canada bordeeeeeer. I guess I could also go for some fresh-baked bread, which has the advantage of being something I can actually do something about.
tea or coffee: Coffee, though it absolutely does keep me awake and exacerbates my anxiety. The market doesn’t understand my need for decaf cold brew.
currently working on: Well I had a pair of wide legged pants that inexplicably ripped in the dryer, so I’m turning those into a skirt. Also I think that the trend for this summer should be metallics, so I’m going to make another skirt with alternating layers of silver lame and royal purple chiffon. The goal is to be shiny enough to take down planes in flight on sunny days. (I have no idea what actual fashion trends are. It’s simply metallic time.) I’m also knitting opera-length gloves with kind of an intense cable pattern on the arm, can’t even think about how long that’s going to take. Writing-wise, I’m editing another novel to self-publish (almost done but then I meet formatting, my old enemy), lightly editing another story to finally go on ao3, getting bogged down in what was meant to be merely an enthusiastic exercise in problematic smut but now the second half turned into musing about how to deal with isolation and the different levels of being screwed over that are part of contemporary capitalism, and procrastinating on that project with what SO FAR is the start of a familiar and comfortable blacksand short. Phantom of the Opera fic and my space opera are not forgotten but they are not as active as all these other things. Also I’m homebrewing mead but all I need to do for that is let it sit.
I tag @tejoxys, @marypsue, @queerpyracy, @purplebloodedmajesty, @incurablenecromantic, @ducktoothcollection, @cenobitesquid, @airagorncharda, @rachie-neyiea if you want! And everyone else please be aware that my selection process for tags is somewhat haphazard!

The Oriental Cocktail - A Life Saving Secret Recipe
Tumblr media
American Engineer Gives Filipino Doctor The Formula In 1924
In August, 1924, an American engineer nearly died of fever in the Philippines, and only the extraordinary devotion of Dr. B— saved his life. As an act of gratitude, the engineer gave Dr. B— the recipe of this cocktail.*
Quite the story. If true, Dengue Fever, a mosquito-borne disease closely related to Yellow Fever and prevalent in Southeast Asia at the time might be what the American engineer was afflicted with.
So, was the good doctor sufficiently rewarded for his heroic life-saving efforts?
Well, the Oriental Cocktail formula is the drink recipe that he gave to Dr. B— and in 1961 its lemon-based second iteration became one of the original 50 IBA Official cocktails. A very prestigious honor for sure. Especially considering the thousands and thousands of possible drinks to choose from that didn't make the cut.
You be the judge.
History Of The Oriental Cocktail
What's In A Name?
There's nothing really ‘oriental’ about this drink's ingredients or flavor profile. So, regardless of whether the narrative above is fact or fiction, it probably got its name from being associated with the Philippines in Southeast Asia which is generally considered the Orient or Far East (versus the Near East or Middle East).
In fact, Manila, the capital of the Philippines, has long been called the Pearl of the Orient.
Timeline
1930 - The Oriental Cocktail debuts in print along with an eyebrow raising account of how it may have been passed down to future generations.*
1933 - Oriental Cocktail No. 2 replaces lime juice with lemon and this adaptation becomes the 1961 International Bartending Association Official Cocktail.†,‡
Then grab a shawl and go into your dance.1
1934 - No. 3 a.k.a the Bronx Silver Cocktail is introduced as being the same as the gin based Bronx Cocktail along with adding an egg white and a pineapple slice to the mix.2  No. 4 swaps lemon juice for sweet and sour.3
And finally in this busy year for the drink, a head scratcher. Oriental Cocktail No. 5 is essentially a Daiquiri, which itself is said to be named after a small mining town in Oriente Province of Cuba. So that's apparently the connection. Why the alias after 30+ years remains a mystery, but Trader Vic and others followed suit by including this version in their bartending books as well.4,5
Luckily at least two varieties of the similar sounding Oriente Cocktail add to all this confusion. Cheers!
1935 - No. 6 has Italian bartender Elvezio Grassi shaking up a mixture of Italian vermouth, grape juice, dry gin and Angostura bitters.6
1937 - A lemon based Daiquiri of sorts which alters No. 5's formulation via the Havana Yacht Club.7
1948 - American tax attorney and mixologist, David Embury, says the Alaska cocktail is sometimes called the Oriental in his famous bartending bible.8
1956 - After assigning his (gin) Oriental Cocktail the name Bronx Silver in 1934, Patrick Duffy tells the reader seeking information on the (whiskey) Oriental Cocktail to "see Derby" referring to the Derby No. 2 drink recipe on page 97 of this edition. Its a standard lime based Oriental, but is garnished with a mint leaf.9

The “grab a shawl” quote cited above from this book is probably a reference to the Paul Jones Square Dance named after the whiskey which along with Four Roses Whiskey is recommended by this author for his Oriental cocktail recipe. He changes the formulation a bit too to ½ Four Roses or Paul Jones Whiskey, ¼ Italian vermouth, ⅛ curacao and ⅛ lime juice.
