Summary:

Deep in the heart of the Ministry lies the Beast Division: a hidden room where ancient beasts roam, and winged creatures soar, and grumpy giant ferrets eat all your biscuits unless you keep them well hidden. Draco Malfoy would know – he’s been working there for five years now, after all.

Meanwhile, on Level One, ex-Golden Boy Harry Potter is stuck in another interminable policy meeting, completely unaware of the mysterious comings and goings just three floors below. But when a giant snake emergency requires the assistance of a Parselmouth, Harry finds himself thrust, unprepared, into Draco’s weird and wonderful world – and naturally, he can’t keep away…

Excerpt:

With a triumphant snarl, Potter rips his canines out of Harry’s hand. “Later, fuckfaces!” he hisses before charging back across the room at full pelt, leaving Harry, on hands and knees, a purple puddle spreading around him, staring in his wake.

“Fuck,” Harry says.

“You can say that again,” Draco agrees, sorrowfully. “Ten more seconds, Harry. Ten more seconds and it’d have been done. As it is, I’ll have to suffer a repeat of that whole bloody rigmarole. And he’ll have his guard up now, you mark my… Harry?”

“Hmm?” Harry answers, absently. He’s busy staring down at his thumb, watching as thin strands of crimson blossom out into the surrounding liquid, and feeling… really rather odd. Sweat has begun to gather on his brow, and there’s a rushing noise in his ears which muffles the sound of Draco’s voice, making it sound as though he’s speaking to Harry from very far away.

“Merlin, you’re a bloody liability aren’t you?” he’s muttering, tugging Harry to his feet and wrapping one arm firmly around his waist. “I have no idea why I ever assumed you were an Auror, when you’d quite clearly have gone charging in on the first mission, tripped straight over the pavement and blown yourself up.”

Draco’s assessment is such an uncannily accurate account of Harry’s brief, unpleasant experience of Auror training, that even in his current state Harry has to work to suppress a laugh. “Shuddup,” he mumbles, but Draco just tuts in response, preoccupied. Harry’s vision’s gone blurry, all the lights in the room surrounded by little rainbow halos, but he can just about make out Draco’s anxious expression as he squints down at Harry’s injured thumb.

“S’OK, right?” asks Harry, trying to work out if he should be more concerned himself. He finds it’s impossible to care though; somehow, despite the throbbing in his hand, he’s more comfortable than he’s ever been, and every single worry in his mind has sort of… floated away. It makes sense; Harry’s so light that he probably could too – could just drift right up to the ceiling alongside the birds – if it wasn’t for the anchoring effect of Draco’s arm keeping him tethered in place.

“It will be,” says Draco, grimly, wrapping the bottom of his own t-shirt around Harry’s thumb, wiping away all traces of potion, and then, before Harry can even work out what’s happening, taking Harry’s thumb into his own mouth and sucking.

“Wha—?” says Harry, but of course he doesn’t receive a reply, only the wet heat of Draco’s mouth, but before he can really start to process what’s happening, his vision begins to clear at the edges, and he feels himself returning, grounded once more, body flooding with heat at the sight of Draco’s lips pursed around his thumb, clearly drawing the last of the potion from Harry’s bloodstream.

He clears his throat.

“Draco, I—”

Draco stops sucking and looks up at Harry, eyes searching. Whatever he’s looking for, he seems to find it, the edges of his mouth curling up into a sly smile. His eyes, dark with intent, don’t leave Harry’s for a second as he lets his mouth go slack, and really, that’s probably a signal for Harry to take his thumb back, to make a joke and lighten the mood… but he doesn’t. Instead he presses down slightly, a weight on Draco’s tongue, testing Draco’s reaction. Draco bites down, just gently, and Harry smiles, thumbing playfully at his lower lip, watching as Draco’s tongue darts out to lap at the smear of blood he leaves behind.

Harry steps forwards, breath coming fast.

“Oh,” says Draco, softly. “You’ve got a—”

He reaches up, indicating Harry’s jaw – the earlier bite, which Harry had all but forgotten about – trying to tilt Harry’s head to the side so he can get a better look.

“Fucking leave it,” Harry grits out, “just—”

“Yes, okay, I suppose we can—” Draco mumbles, half to himself. His eyes are fixed on Harry’s lips, but his body’s tense, his movements still careful. It’s as though all his usual confidence has deserted him – as though he’s waiting for something. For Harry to close the gap, perhaps.

So Harry does.

It’s a gentle press of lips at first, barely there, but enough that Harry can taste his own blood, mixed with a candyfloss sweetness that must be the potion, and it’s not quite right, is it? That’s not how Draco should taste. That’s not how this should go. There’s just enough doubt in his mind that Harry inhales, making to pull away… until Draco lets out a disapproving hum, a sound so deeply, familiarly, and fondly Draco that Harry can’t help but smile, exhaling with relief. Draco’s smiling too, his lips moving against Harry’s own, mirroring him, and then they’re kissing again – properly this time – and god, Harry thinks, this is how it should go.

The kiss itself is a bit of a mess – Harry feeling rather frantic, while Draco’s still clearly pretty tense. His eyes are squeezed shut as though he’s concentrating very hard, and one hand is twined tight in Harry’s hair, gripping it and tugging it so hard it almost hurts, while the other is resting lightly against the small of Harry’s back, as though he doesn’t know quite what else to do with it. Harry’s collar is soaked with blood and his feet are wet through with potion and dirty ferret water, and in the distance Harry can hear the usual animal noises, wings flapping and hooves thudding, and it’s all… well, pretty perfect, actually. But then it’s been ages, of course, whole years since he’s kissed anyone like this – so long since he’s wanted anyone like this – and this is Draco, isn’t it? It’s not some anonymous hook-up or quick one-nighter to burn off energy on tour.

This is – this is something new.

Something important.

19. What’s your favorite character headcanon?

i've gotten this one a bunch of times, so we're going to do a few different headcanons today! one of my faves is definitely that the malfoys genuinely love their kid, even if they're not great parents/good people. i love digging into malfoy family drama and exploring messed up dynamics surrounding a core of love (sometimes a blessing and a curse!!) and i don't usually buy into the opposing narrative of them being outright abusive.

WIP Snip

Nearly finished this fic, final extended scene is a go atm. In this snippet, Harry has just arrived unexpectedly at the Manor where Draco is undercover pretending to be a Death Eater. CW for wandpoint confessions and mild angst.

Draco’s eyes narrowed but he put his hand inside his robe and then, quicker than Harry could have hoped to notice, Draco had his wand out and was holding it to Harry's throat, pressing hard so the wood bit into the tender skin under his jawline. "You are Harry, I suppose? You seem right, of course, but there’s always a chance that someone enterprising might come along with a stash of Polyjuice and a gift for impersonation.” “Oh, fuck off,” Harry managed, and the point of Draco’s wand wormed slowly deeper into flesh. “You knew it was me the second you saw me.” “Mmm, I suppose that’s true,” Draco murmured agreeably, something suggestive about how the sound travelled through the small space between them. His free hand strayed to Harry’s forehead and he brushed his fingers lightly over the dried blood that Harry could feel tightening on the skin there. “But indulge me. Tell me something only you would know.” Harry scoffed, though he was thinking with his throat tight of Arthur knocking at the door of the Burrow in the middle of the night long ago, and Molly blushing, and how they had exposed the long intimacy of their marriage for safety's sake. “There’s a lot I could tell you,” he said tightly. “If you’re really sure you want to hear it.” “By all means,” Draco said, eyes on Harry, searching for something in his face. “You fucked me in that bed and afterwards you asked me not to leave because you wanted to wake up with me? Remember?” Draco wanted to look towards the bed, Harry could tell by the way his eyes flickered, but he resisted, and so Harry went on. “You told me you wanted us to win this war just so you could take me back to London and feed me my favourite ice-cream off your spoon. You told me the only thing you miss about France is how you and your mum really got to know each other properly, and that when she gets back you want to take her for dinner to that little French bistro we went to that time in Edinburgh. I know you remember that, you said the wine was better than anything in the cellar here.” Draco nodded shortly, and almost regretfully pulled his wand away from Harry’s neck. He didn’t move away. “Yes, fair enough, I believe you.” But Harry couldn’t stop, didn’t know how to shut up now he had started. “The last time we were together, you told me that I’m generous with my love. Do you remember that? And I wondered then… because I’d never said it, had I? Not out loud, anyway. Neither of us had. But I thought, maybe— Maybe it meant that you knew.” Draco was staring, his eyes wide and shocked, a blush crawling up his neck, blotchy with heat. Neither of them moved, the silence between them growing until Harry could practically feel it. Draco almost raised his hand to Harry then; Harry sensed the arrested movement, the enforced stillness. He didn’t know what he’d do if Draco touched him. But he didn’t have to find out, because that’s when the knock at the door sounded.

Hello! I'm getting back into fandom after many years and was hoping you could recommend the best (or most popular) drarry fics to come out in the last 5 years?? The longer the better! I'm having such a blast re-reading old favs and would love more to read! Thank you so much!

"It's... it's not good," Harry tells them lowly. "They've given him a month's time, only." There is so much he needs to explain, but his head is foggy and exhausted and he can't think properly, can't think of how to relay all that he's learned. "Have you heard of Alucinatio?" is what he starts with. "The Daydream potion," Hermione says. "The person who intakes it experiences very vivid and realistic daydreams of all they could ever want, but is essentially in a severely catatonic state out in the external world, incapable of any basic functions." Harry nods. "Somebody's given it to Malfoy." He remembers the tattered remains of a black coak wrapped around Malfoy. "I think it might have been Professor Snape." They take a minute to process that. "And... the cure?" Ron asks. "Tears of anyone the experiencer craves love of," Hermione answers.

My AO3 Wrapped: 16 Drarry Recs

This year I’ve embraced a change of pace and read way less than I intended to. This made me feel a bit disconnected from fandom but also allowed me to put this list together in record time so let’s not complain too much 😂 this is shorter and lacking my usual commentary but I didn’t want to break the tradition of sharing my fave reads of the year! Be it for their creativity or peak romance, these 16 amazing fics made my heart beat faster and got me even more in love with Drarry. I’ve read most of them in the first half of the year and it was interesting to see so many fics over 40k, as my usual sweet spot is 10k - 20k. I love the mix of tropes featured here and am very excited to rec authors I’m reading for the first time. ps: I haven’t included any Erised fics since the fest is still ongoing.

Thank you dear creators for sharing so many brilliant works with us this year! 2023 wasn’t my best year fandom-wise, but life has been so generous in other areas that I can’t help but feel humbled today. Caught out, Draco blushed. Harry took pity on him. “To answer your original question though: yes, I came to the ball alone.”

“And now you’re out here with me.”

“And now I’m out here with you.”

Draco stepped closer still, boldly moving his hand upwards so that his palm rested against Harry’s chest. He followed it with his gaze, pale fingers skimming over soft black fabric, gratified at the way the rapid rise and fall underneath his hand belied Harry’s calm exterior. He tapped his fingernails lightly against the Order of Merlin. In the absolute silence between them, the clinking sound seemed amplified a thousand-fold.

He let his eyes stray to Harry’s face. Harry’s head was tipped back, still against the pillar, and his eyelids were half-closed. His lips were parted – wet, obscene – and here, too, Draco could see his breath coming fast, unsteady. Dizzy with the force of his want, Draco brought his other hand up next to Harry’s head, bracing himself on the pillar. Harry’s eyes – so green, like fresh spring leaves and new beginnings, like shouted curses and the Firewhisky bottle under Draco’s bed – widened slightly at the movement, mouth curving up into a lazy smile, and Draco was lost.

Without another moment’s hesitation, he grabbed a handful of his robes, and in one smooth motion, pulled Harry against him. He felt the small, surprised “oh!” against his lips, and then they were kissing. Harry’s mouth opened sweetly underneath his, as Draco’s fingers curled around the nape of his neck, combing through soft black curls.

Warmth spread across Draco’s chest, bubbling through his veins, as their mouths moved together. Finally, finally, he’d found it – the thrill he’d been chasing ever since that first hit of Felix, the only thing in the world that could compare to that feeling of absolute power. This – utter, mindless bliss – was everything he’d craved for so long; everything he’d been looking for in the arms of Muggle strangers, or racing around a Quidditch pitch, or at the bottom of a bottle.

He moved to deepen the kiss, tongue slipping inside to claim Harry’s mouth, breath hitching as Harry’s hand came to rest just below the small of his back. Harry’s little finger dipped down further, hesitantly, making Draco growl and press forward, until his whole weight was pinning Harry to the pillar. He thrilled at Harry’s sharp intake of breath as their bodies slid together, Harry’s hard length insistent against his hip. Draco ignored it, slanting his head and continuing his assault on Harry’s mouth.

They were both breathing heavily by now, hands growing bolder, tugging at clothing, grasping at flesh. Draco drew back slightly to take Harry’s lower lip between his teeth, nipping at it softly until Harry let out a long, broken moan. It echoed around them, far too loud, almost pornographic in the enormous room.

It was this sound which seemed to shock Harry back to his senses. He brought a hand up between them, ostensibly trying to push Draco away even while his mouth still continued to seek Draco’s, pressing little kisses to the corners as though unable to stop. Draco nudged at Harry’s nose eagerly, their lips barely touching.

“What?”

“Draco.” He sounded desperate, wrecked. “We can’t – not here. Someone will see.”

“There’s no one around.” Draco realised as he spoke that it would sound ridiculous – they were in the Ministry Atrium, for Merlin’s sake – but imbued with a healthy dose of Felix, he knew with total certainty that no one would spot them. Impatient, desperate for more, he pulled Harry in for another searing kiss. Harry returned it for a few seconds, laughing helplessly against Draco’s lips, before turning his head to the side, forcing them apart. Draco gave a small moan of displeasure.

“Someone could walk in at any minute. We’ll be – stop it!” he grinned, trying to bat Draco away as he continued kissing down the side of Harry’s neck. “I mean it! There are reporters here. We’ll be on the front page tomorrow if you’re not careful. Let’s go somewhere. Preferably somewhere with, you know, a bed.”

A bed sounded good to Draco.
