Aesthetics for February: 💌

Valentines, heart shaped paradise, red lipstick kisses and baking 💋

Now it is February, I can fully embrace the Valentines aesthetic. I want to go all out this year, and so in this post I’m going to tell you how I plan to do it 🥰

Aesthetics for February:

- Classic coquette

- Valentines

- Red downtown girl

Classic coquette:

When I say classic coquette I mean the original, 2018 Tumblr Coquette. I remember scrolling through (when coquette wasn’t what it is now) and seeing faded pictures of Heart shaped sunglasses, Brandy Melville cami tops, Gold heart lockers and Mary Janes, and this is what I class as the “Classic Coquette” aesthetic. 💌

Valentines:

I feel that the “Valentines” aesthetic is so niche because it only comes round as one day a year. But I really want to make the most of it this year. The red and pink cards, anything heart shaped or patterned, baking, red lips, flowers and red and pink literally being everywhere. I am going to write a separate post on how I plan to spend Valentines this year ♥️

Red downtown girl:

I see the “Downtown” girls all over my Pinterest, and whilst I don’t live in a city, I’ve always admired their cool style and edgy but classic outfits. This month I really want to invest in a Red faux leather jacket and pair it with a pair of Mary Janes, I think that would look adorable for this time of year 💋

Clean girl:

Recent I’ve just been obsessed with the whole “Clean/It girl” aesthetic. It really motivates me and even just reading blogs, manifestation tips, and watching videos on it can inspire me. I’ve been loving red and pink self care items, lip gloss, cleansers etc, anything girly 🌹

I’m aiming to wear only the color-scheme of pink, red, white, cream and black this month, to really get into the Valentines mood. I am going to write out a separate post on Coquette February and Valentine’s Day, and the fashion that comes with them, but I hope you have enjoyed reading! I love you all so much, thank you for all of the love at this very loving time of year.

Suddenly, Letters from Watson dumps us in the middle of the Great American Desert (part 1 of "On the Great Alkali Plain," 2/7/24). This is not anywhere I expected to be transported from London, and the contrast makes the Mountain West feel exotic for a minute.

The Great American Desert -- stretching from about Grand Island, Nebraska to the Sierras and pretty much the entire north-south length of the U.S. -- had become a thing of legend since explorers' accounts in the 1820s. When Dad and I drove across it in 2022, we talked about how incredibly daunting it must have been for emigrants seeking their land of milk and honey on the Pacific coast.

The way we went, out I-80, Nebraska shifts from green to gray as it rises toward the Rockies. After a while, the wind picks up as you go uphill into Wyoming. There's a lot of Wyoming, and after Cheyenne and Laramie (both of which would be small towns in most states), it's very, very empty. When we finally started the descent toward Salt Lake City, and the little valleys beside the road turned green with running water, it was truly like entering paradise.

Of course, in 1847, Salt Lake City was just barely being settled, as Brigham Young led his Latter Day Saints west from Council Bluffs, and its location wasn't part of the U.S. yet.

The Mexican-American war had started the prior year, 1846, and was still going. Spring-summer of 1846 saw the Bear Flag Revolt in California, followed by the U.S. just annexing the state. Gold wouldn't be discovered at Sutter's Mill until 1849, so while emigration to California happened -- the Donner Party made their ill-fated trip in 1846-47 -- it wasn't anything like the scope of movement along the Oregon Trail.

As far as I can tell, "Sierra Blanco" is not a real place. There's a Sierra Blanca in New Mexico -- which would fit with all the specific landscape, plus White Sands National Park in New Mexico specifically has alkali flats. Last time I drove through New Mexico on I-40, in late 2018, it was delightfully desolate, so I can buy that in 1847, it seemed completely empty, with even the native peoples avoiding some stretches.

Why anyone would be crossing New Mexico is a mystery, since neither Arizona nor southern California were much settled by Americans. There was some sort of wagon route across New Mexico used by U.S. soldiers during the Mexican-American War, so if I'd expect anyone to be about, it'd be the U.S. Army.

Utah, now, is downright famous for its salt flat, but that's west of the site of Salt Lake City.

Regardless, parties screwing up their trip to the west by taking an imprudent shortcut or mistaking the route was definitely both a thing that happened and, thanks to the Donner Party, a trope. Our haggard and starving traveler sounds about right.

Then he reveals a Plucky Innocent Victorian Child.

That "pretty little girl of about five years of age" is the absolute ideal of Victorian childhood, being perfectly behaved, utterly imperturbable, determined to see the best in all things, sweet, trusting, and looking forward to being reunited with her mother in heaven.

This kind of child is why Louisa May Alcott was seen as innovative for writing Little Woman about girls who worked on their character flaws. (This is also the ideal the March girls were being aimed at. Polly in An Old-Fashioned Girl comes closer, but even Polly would have been upset about being hopelessly lost in the desert with no water.) Contrast this with the street urchins that Holmes employs in his investigation, who are good enough sorts but scrappy, resourceful, and street smart.

Ordinarily, a Victorian child who was utterly sweet and pious would be a cinnamon roll, literally too good, too pure for this world, and thus would die beautifully but tragically before long. Being lost in the desert seems ideal for this, but --

She turns to prayer, and since someone must survive in order for this scene to be relevant,

Yes, darn it, I am on the edge of my seat to know what happens. I'm also grateful that crossing the Great American Desert in 2022 was a quicker process. I've been reading Carey Williams' old-but-interesting California: The Great Exception, which has a lot to say about how 19th century isolation shaped California's economy and power structure, not always for good. But that's neither here nor there -- I don't think we're headed to California.

This is Noni cat, and I got her 8 years ago from the shelter. They told me she was maybe six years old when I swiped my credit card for her.

She’s been a pretty active cat for at least the last 6 years; when I was living alone with just Noni as my roommate, she would jump out of my open 3 story window down to the second story window and demand food and pets, which my neighbor was happy to provide. Luckily he only had to do this once, but I was still mortified (especially since I was living in a no pets place and passing off my adoption of a cat as “my coworker is going through a divorce and asked me to watch his cat for a few weeks so that his ex didn’t cause more trouble” and all my neighbors were single older men, and I worked in a motorcycle place with 90% male coworkers so it honestly did fly under the radar…the only reason I was able to get her at all was because I did laundry/cleaning for one of my single coworkers for a week and put his number down as my landlord and he was like “yes, she can get a kitty, she’s done a really good job of keeping things clean and being responsible, I trust her.” FYI, I was also taking his dog on play dates at the doggie park down the street from me on my days off just for my own amusement, so like. He wasn’t my actual landlord but he also wasn’t lying about my ability to take care of an animal.)

Anyway, the only reason I ever ended up with Noni was because on my second date with my now husband I said I didn’t know if I wanted to buy a cat or a gun, and he and I spent 8 hours just bumming around all the pet places and gun shops that we both knew about (and meeting my aunt and grandparents because they live just up the street from one of the best pawnshops in the area, I “have some mail I need to pick up right quick, it’s just a five minute detour” and oh my goodness…you know that feeling when you see your family immediately like the person you’re dating? Yeah.)

So after husband and I move in together but before anything is official…there is a wildly out of control feral cat population in the area his apartment was in. Noni cat was fine, because she only ever hung out in the front or back yard, but the lady two houses up would put out multiple trays of food for 30+ cats. She was very sweet but also wasn’t trapping and spaying/neutering them, and we didn’t have any central ac (so doors open and fans on, we die like men, sleep with ice packs, and scrub the mud daughter nests out with dawn dish soap), so every summer, about once a week, I’d hear typical cat fighting noises, and go charging out to the living room where some random cat had Noni cornered. I stomp and shout and chase the stay cat out, Noni cuddles me for ten minutes in gratitude before the heat is too much for both of us, we move on.

Then me and husband buy a house in 2018. We move into our new suburban paradise, but alas…Noni cat is a straight up gangster cat, right out of Commerce City.

In all the years we have lived in this house, Noni cat has left a minimum of ten bunny corpses on the front lawn. Per summer.

I love her, I really do. And I recognize that cats should be indoor pets, for environmental reasons. But I legit cried when she brought a still alive baby bunny to the door (with every intention of eating it as is on the living room floor) and she accidentally dropped it and it tried to run away and instead of doing anything productive I just went inside and cried to my husband. Who laughed at me, rightfully so.

Anyway, she’s getting older now, and there’s definitely something wrong with her. She didn’t murder any baby bunnies at all this summer, got “old cat skinny and bony” and honestly refuses to go outside at all. She was always super cuddly during winter because cats like warm things, but now she wants cuddles and attention all the time.

With me starting a new job, I don’t necessarily have the money to get her fully checked out. I want to, she isn’t just a great cat, she’s the only cat my husband has ever liked; she’s wonderful and worth every penny, but fuck are we in a tight spot with his medical stuff and me having three jobs in the last 18 months. There’s no fucking ROOM on the credit cards to take care of her.

Husband found a vet that charges a lot less, but is an hour outside of town. What we save in vet bills we spend in gas to get there.

I don’t really have a point I’m leading up to, or a critical argument or analysis…my cat is dying and it fucking sucks on so many levels, because she was so instrumental in how I got where I am.

I just wanted to tell her/my story and have it be shared with random strangers who might have an interest.

I know that atomix was an OT7 dinner, and i know that we don’t have much information on Paradise hotel but we do know that taekook did a tiktok there. So where is this Namsam date from? Do you know where this information is coming from and when taekook were at Namsan? I usually don’t trust stuff coming from taekookers.

I'm glad you trust me! Sorry I took so long to reply! This one is true and accurate, probably not like whatever tkkrs make it sound like.... But they did go out to Namsam for dinner together. An ARMY spotted them while they were at the same place with their family and got their autographs and spoke to them briefly. It seemed like a sweet interaction. That ARMYs post and photos:

What are some tk moments for you that made you completely sure of them being together? Like those moments where you can just cannot pretend that they aren't a couple 💜

Hi 😊 hmm, when I think about it, rather than specific moments, my belief is based on all the moments, big and small, that have happened over the years. They might not mean much on their own, but when you put them all together, it becomes quite clear and creates something beautiful. But there are some that stand out to me, and these are a few of them.

▪︎The ily sign during their Chile concert in 2017 - it's the way Tae subtly shows Jungkook the sign behind his back and the way Jungkook acknowledges it by gently nudging Tae's hand with his own. I just think it's such a raw and tender moment between them. Even though they're standing on a stage in front of thousands of people you can tell that moment was meant to be something private between them. It wasn't fanservice, I don't think it was even really meant to be seen at all. Tae was worried about Jungkook because he wasn't feeling well, and showing him ily was his way of letting him know that he was there for him.

▪︎Jungkook asking Tae, "Am I your friend?" During Summer package 2018 - although it's more about Tae's reaction to what Jungkook says for me. Jungkook was being cheeky and basically put Tae on the spot, causing him to appear quite flustered and speechless. The word (chingu) isn't the issue as all the members were using it to introduce each other during that segment. Jungkook even referred to Yoongi, who is his hyung, as "chingu." It seemed to me like Jungkook wanted to tease Tae about the status of their relationship being more than "friends," and Tae's reaction was very telling.

▪︎The "Private conversation" comment - we all know by now that k-army have said the "Private conversation" phrase is usually used in a romantic sense between couples and that it's also slang for "making out." Both Jungkook and Jimin's reactions to what Tae said is interesting. Jungkook looked slightly taken aback, instantly checks how long he's been on vlive, and then says, " Everyone, I guess I have to end it quickly." Which is funny because at the beginning he said that he was going to stay on live for a really long time, but as soon as Tae tells him to stop, he does. And then Jimin's reaction is to get close to the camera and start making kissy/teasing noises while smiling. Although quite bold, this moment doesn't really surprise me because taekook were pretty wild at times back in the day. Over the years they've obviously matured and learned to be more subtle and discreet.

▪︎Hiding in each other's lives - it makes no sense as to why they would need to hide the fact that they're sharing a room, or hide the fact that they're in the room when the other one is on live. This isn't an issue with any of the other members, and it relates to them being separated and their interactions together being reduced on screen. There's enough evidence (behaviour and voices in the background) for me to be confident that this has happened multiple times. One instance I'd like to point out is a Jungkook live in 2019 where Jin, Jimin, and Tae join him in his room whilst he's on live (the one where when asked what they where doing Jungkook replied "date" causing an awkward silence and Tae to start randomly clapping). Tae asked, "Who's room is this?" Which caused Jin and Jimin to look surprised because taekook were sharing the room but trying to hide it. Later on during the live, Jungkook asks Tae when he's leaving, and he says, "weren't we using the same room?" Exposing them both. And then when Tae finally does leave, he only pretends to because after he's "gone," we see the wrapper from the sweet he was eating earlier being thrown from a direction off screen and Jungkook keeps glancing to the right, the direction in which Tae "left."

▪︎Dates/trips for just the two of them - the most important thing to note about the Atomix date/Paradise hotel stay/Namsan date is that as far as we know, they were alone. There were no staff or managers with them. Those dates were something they did on their own for just the two of them. The Atomix date was on a day the restaurant is usually closed, so it's safe to assume they were the only ones dining that day, and you need to book in adance so it was something they had planned. I don't need to say that staying at the Paradise Hotel together sounds like a romantic staycation. The Namsan hotel also required booking in advance, and if I'm not mistaken, you have to book a hotel room to eat there. These all seem very much like intimate and romantic dates to me rather than two friends having a casual dinner.

Everyone and their mother is doing energy drink reviews these days but they all look laughable to me. They're out here reviewing RedBull and Crazy Tiger Lemon like we're in 2018.... aren't you ashamed to post such basic stuff? What are you doing? We're way past that. You look stupid. Anyway. It's been a while... Let me show you my sexy selection.

Carabao Energy Drink: interesting because it goes back to the very origin of energy drinks: Thailand! The first energy drink was created in Thailand in 1975, and was then adapted to create RedBull. So thank you for that. Carabao is the most popular energy drink in Thailand after RedBull. God we're learning so much today! The can size is cute, however it tastes extremely sweet and sour, and is not carbonated at all which was kind of unsettling. Interesting experience though, it's a completely different taste palette from western energy drinks imo. I drank 2 cans and felt nothing, as usual! 3/5 stars.

Onto the next one for a widely different story!

Freez Mix Energy Dragon: I forgot to take a pic but believe me, we did buy that stupid thing. First of all, these drinks are packaged like beer bottles as a 6-pack, which I should have been suspicious of. I found out at the cash register that the 6-pack costs 10€ but by then it was too late, and luckily the cashier was also drinking an orange RedBull so when she saw my face fall at the price, she joked about RedBull being even more expensive instead of making fun of me, so I knew I was in a safe space for idiots and alpha males. So basically when it comes to the taste....it's bad? I'm so sorry for being a hater but this is just not good and not what I expect from an energy drink. Luckily for the Freez Mix company, before I'm a hater, I'm also an intellectual and a scientist, so I looked up their website to understand their intent and creative process. This wasn't hard to do, because on the bottle right nex to the cap was a QR code that said "Scan the QR code to open the bottle safely!". I was like... Do you think I'm stupid? I need a QR code to do what now? And then I opened the bottle and spilled the drink all over myself. This drink is carbonated to the high heavens. So we scanned the code, which links you to a stupid YouTube video where they show how to open the bottle, and they opened it normally just like I did, but they're just full of lies because their drink didn't spill all over. Anyway! So we also checked their website and found out they're really trying to create a line of fancy drinks that will look good at parties where everyone drinks alcohol but you don't. So this is why this energy drink has like a beer fursona. And tastes like shit non-alcoholic beer mixed with energy drink. I also found out that's it's called Dragon because it's supposed to be dragonfruit flavoured? I wouldn't have guessed. To me it tastes too bitter to be an energy drink, but it's not like it's a jägerbomb either. This drink just hasn't found itself yet. It's on a journey. Unfortunately, I needed to be on a journey too since we bought 6 of these, so I had to learn to like the taste, and the fact that every single bottle spills everywhere no matter how you open it. Possibly so you can chug it at frat parties like a real beer? I don't think that would make you very popular. 2/5 stars, this drink was all over the place.

Bang Energy Drink Candy Apple Crisp: so this one sent me in a bit of a crisis. Not much to say about it, but avid readers will remember that I once reviewed a personal favourite, Monster Energy Ultra Paradise, and said that it tasted like the green apple artificial flavour. However, this Bang is now supposed to taste exactly like that but with sugar candy on top. However², I don't see how you can make a drink that already usually tastes fully of sugar taste like more sugar. So this just tastes like energy drink with an artificial apple flavour, but NOT as much as the Monster one that isn't supposed to taste like that at all. Life is complicated. I just feel like this Bang is a travesty of something I love and cherish. 2/5 stars, the flavour was okay but -3 taken for the disrespect of my loved ones.

May! Officially springtime, I wanted my May playlist to key off of 'Les Fleurs' by Minnie Riperton, a song my bff shared in our family discord and has haunted me since (positive).

This playlist put itself together pretty quickly, and basically was in its final form by mid-month. And, since part of the whole point of me even starting doing monthly playlists was because I am prone listening to the same playlists over and over (and over), I had no problem spending two weeks of workdays listening to the same series of songs. It's comforting! My comfort playlist is six songs long and I used to play it on a loop through most of a workday at a Bad Place I Worked. Three hours of syrupy spring joy every day was a delight.

The vibe for May was, if I may quote what I sent my bestie in describing it: "Flowers and joy sweetness and fierceness is the vibes, Middle finger in a lace glove." I mean, I think I achieved that, anyway.

Several covers on this one, like the Cowboy Junkies covering Vic Chesnutt 'Flirted With You All My Life,' which is a hard one to cover for a lot of reasons but this is (to me) a successful attempt. The 'Goodbye Horses' cover by Dead On A Sunday is also a new favourite, it doesn't really change much about it, but it's just a good damn song. The Cardigans singing 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' hit me so unexpectedly, I was delighted.

An Dro's arrangement of the Hieronymus Bosch butt music is probably my favourite version, and I'm grateful to this Tumblr post for introducing this artist to me.

There are two songs from Schmigadoon! season two in here, if you can find a way to watch it (Apple TV+) and are a musicals fan you're in for a treat. It's a damn tragedy how they've got so few clips for this show and were consistently late in sharing what little they had or in making songs available quickly on Spotify. It's a musical show! You're a giant network! Anyway, enjoy this Chicago-inspired piece that is not on this playlist but is a delight nonetheless.
