The intro scenes hit a bit different this morning, when my beloved Swords Bard finally landed on the beach in Balanced Difficulty Mode after five months of absolutely stomping through Explorer Mode. Yes, I'm playing the same character and build again. And yes I got him out of that ridiculous Volo-jerkin as soon as I could.
Tumblr media
And yes I'm still salty that we don't get whips as weapons. That's what he used in 5e and it was great. And no, Thorn Whip doesn't count (he can't attack twice or flourish with it). Come on, Larian. Gimme that d4 finesse damage with ten-foot-reach. Have none of you played Castlevania or enjoyed Indiana Jones?
Tumblr media
(I should belatedly note that I can’t mod bc MacBook, so I’m stuck with vanilla gear and have mostly made my peace with it, just not for the bard jerkin)

Venza Tavrus "Tav" Steelsong, a tiefling swords bard.
I've had so much fun designing this Tav! The character builder served as the reference. Venza was my chance to play around with colors and lean wholeheartedly into the gaudy bard aesthetic.
Some character roleplaying facts: he tells everyone who asks (and especially those who don't) that he got his scars in a fierce battle with a hippogriff—(or was it a chimera...? Or maybe a baby hydra...let's just agree to say it was all three)...but in actuality he got them when he tripped during swords practice as a young boy, fell, landed on his dropped blades and cut his cheek open.
His favorite color is purple (except for Tuesdays, when it changes to maroon), he plays the violin, he would die for his best bud Volo whom he's met all of two (2) times, and whenever the lockpick breaks while he's "investigating unfortunately unyielding chests," it's the lockpick's fault, not his, damn it.
For all his attention-seeking tendencies, he gets unexpectedly shy when complimented and prefers to work on new songs in private until he feels ready to share them.

Underfoot
Character I’m actually currently using. A Bard that plays almost like a Rogue. My third attempt at a Dragonheist Campaign and it’s going well so far. His name is a homage to a Halfling from another game I was in by the name of Halffoot.
Halfling (Lightfoot) -  Bard (College of Swords) - Criminal - Chaotic/Neutral
Concept: Halfling (Lightfoot or Ghostwise) - Bard/Rogue/Warlock? - Criminal/Smuggler Former member of a WereRat Thieves Guild. Left after getting cold feet over a particularly bold scheme, inadvertently sabotaging it, and is now on the run from the WereRats. Plays the Lute or a Balalaika. Cowardly and skittish by nature.
Note: Possibly change Class. Doesn't strictly need to be a Bard, and unsure how being a Bard actually plays into it. Rat Bard partially inspired by Omen Sight.
Martin Redwall, nickname "Underfoot". Cowardly. Former member of a Wererat Thieves Guild. Got cold feet about a particular job and bolted. Group was known as the Wharf Rats. Probably from Waterdeep?
Maybe make him older, drop the high cracking voice, re-work cowardice, and make him the former leader of the Thieves Guild, or a higher ranking member. Got cold feet and tried to get the others caught before making his escape. Still on the run.
Backstory Used:
Born Martin Redwall, in the lands bordering the sea of fallen stars, his was a childhood stricken with poverty and very little else of interest. In his latter years, and for a long time, he was member and leader of a gang known as the "Wharf Rats", a band of Wererat Thieves plaguing the coastline. Being the big cheese was the good life, at least until it wasn't. One of the other members became increasingly zealous in his call for the group to aggressively expand their operations and influence. Worse yet, a number of others agreed. Concluding perhaps he was getting a little old for these games of cat and mouse, he hatched a plan to get the entirety of the gang caught minus himself. Setting up a job, he then discreetly informed the local authorities to turn it into a trap…and a right fiasco. A generous description would that things didn't go to plan. On the positive side, the chaos was more than enough to make his escape, sitting in the negative column was the fact wererats didn't really allow people to leave a clan.
Fleeing west under the guise of a travelling Minstrel, he was able to obtain the services of a Cleric of Waukeen in removing the wererat curse in return for a "generous donation to the church". Eventually his flight took him to Waterdeep, a good place for one to disappear thanks to it's size. Unfortunately being on the lamb tends to mean one owes favors, and one such favour was about to be called in.
Notes:  - Loves Cheese. - Cheese Puns - Cagey
Appearance: 3′2, 40 lbs. Heterochromia, one blue one hazel. Black hair, tan skin. Scar over one eye. Hair and beard/mustache are immaculate and positively dashing. Red shirt with a high collar kept closed. Long boots and long leather gloves, both black. Gloves are fingerless for that light touch. Black hooded cloak with a clasp, furred collar. Belt for tools pouch and potions. Wields a rapier and a parrying dagger.  Has three tattoos. Two on the right bicep, and one on the left. On the right: Two stylized rats around a solid circle forming a lock, their tales make a band around the arm and look like waves. The second is a stylized rat wearing a crown with a crescent moon on it. On the left: A pair of coins, one with the profile of Waukeen, the other Tymora, both facing forward. Once again heavily inspired by https://paleo-punk.tumblr.com/ take on Halflings, so very hairy. I suggest you check them out, their artwork is fantastic.

Character Ideas Day 17: Swords Bard
You’re a dancer by trade, and a very well regarded one at that. Your career comes to an end quickly when you are drafted into your local military, where you traded a stage for a battlefield and a banner for a blade. You make the most of it, making your fighting style into a sort of dance and impressing your superiors effortlessly. Now, the war is over and you’re ready to leave the soldier persona behind, reconnecting with the music you love.
You make your living as a historical re-enactor, fighting off historical bad guys while portraying the part of a long disbanded adventuring group. But when the threat the group once faced rises again, they call you, hoping to help expand their arsenal by doubling up on the skill set of a friend.
As a gift from your thieve’s guild, you were given a magical sword that frankly, seems broken. You’re informed by a mentor that unfortunately, it works on honor, and you’re… hardly the type to be considered worthy. So, you learn both some magic and your way around a sword, in case something changes.
When a warlike clan attacks your home, you manage to charm your way out from under the blade, going to live with and learning the ways of the clan. Now you’re striking off on your own, finding yourself too brutish for bards and too fine tuned for barbarians, to make a name for yourself and the offbeat way you learned to fight.
As the beloved jester of a less than beloved royal family, you learned swordsmanship to help thwart many attempts on the lives of your bosses. The more you talk to locals, though, the more your loyalties waver, and now you seek a new place to use your talents, hopefully becoming someone the people you were supposed to serve can finally begin to trust.
Born the child of the only magic user in a down on their luck guild of thieves, your lack of innate magic came to the steep disappointment of your guild. Desperate to have them look at you as anything but a failure, you learn some bardic tricks to accompany your blade work, but it never seems to be enough. Maybe, you think, a big score or noteworthy heroic act will finally earn their pride. And maybe this group of rowdy strangers is the right group to do it with.
You’ve always thought bard school was dumb and full of nerds, so you slacked off all the way through. You were only really there for the swordsmanship team, which you were the star of, but your disciplinary record and lackluster grades made that short lived. So now, you’re drifting, not wanting to start up your education again (or go anywhere near most other bards) but still wanting to hone some of your skills, and maybe create a new reputation.
You recently took the position of replacement for a beloved bard found dead under mysterious circumstances in a local bardic troupe, and though the locals find your hiring off putting, you’re actually there to solve your predecessors’ murder using the magic you learn with the troupe and the weapons you learned with the local law. Quickly though, you realize you’re in way deeper than you thought, and join up with a group of adventurers to help you find connections in the game you found yourself in the middle of.
The elders at a local temple are convinced a near-forgotten minor celestial is trapped in an unassuming sword, and have tasked you , a low level bard, to guard it seemingly at random. As you hone your bardic skills, some become convinced you’ve bonded with the celestial (that is very much not within your new weapon) and you gain a reputation as the celebrated warlock you unequivocally are not. Scared to tell them the truth, you set off to connect with the celestial legitimately, hoping against hope that it still somehow exists, and won’t hate you for your perceived lies.
You run a tourist trap centered around a dragon attack years ago, with the centerpiece being “the sword that felled the mighty beast itself!!” It is very much a budget rapier you snagged from your local shop but with your charisma? Who could know. Eventually though, the gigue is up, and someone finds out your lie, threatening to put you out of business if you don’t think of something fast. So, you go out with the sword on adventures of your own, hoping to add legitimate credits to the lie that made you famous.

Day 18- Sword of the Bard
Sword- The Bat-tle Cry
This blade has a uniquely designed handle composed of rings that give its user a better grip. It can be unhinged and used as two swords- either for combat or to juggle between sets for a delighted crowd.
