Your fingers tapped rhythmically on the table, moving to turn another page of the file as you took a spoonful of soup into your mouth. Your lunch break was a little lonelier than usual, Mobius was late, which you were used to by now. He hasn’t been showing up as frequently, but would apologize over and over saying ‘next time, next time’, only to flake then too.
You couldn’t be mad at him though, you knew the dedication he had to his job. Finding this variant was extremely important, especially with the growing number of dead hunters being left at the feet of the TVA.
“Need company?” A voice interrupted your train of thought. You looked up from your book. The man in question stood over you with a small, kind smile on his face. You dropped your feet from the chair across from you, letting your boots drop onto the floor loudly.
You sat up in your chair a little straighter, closing the binder in front of you, and moving your soup to the side. “It’s about time you showed up.” You teased, watching him sit across from you with your arms crossed on the table.
“Yeah, yeah. I was stuck in an meeting after the field mission.” He waved his hand, the atmosphere around the both of you light and comfortable.
“Oooo, how fun.” You replied sarcastically, taking another spoonful of soup.
You found yourself falling into an easy conversation with Mobius just like always. He told you about the failed mission at the renaissance fair, how it ended up leading nowhere as usual. The only thing they had to leave with was knowing C-20 was missing in action, and everyone’s faith in Mobius’ decision to keep Loki around wavering more and more.
Anxiety twisted in your stomach, fearing what could happen to the missing hunter. She is one of your best, and to have her in the hands of the Loki variant was not only dangerous for everyone in the TVA, especially the Time Keepers, but also incredibly strange. Never has the variant taken a hostage until now, and the thoughts of what may be happening to Hunter C-20 made you sick.
---
Your soup was finally gone, bowl pushed aside as you read one of the magazines that Mobius got you.
After all the times you stole magazines off his desk, he started to leave you your own, first starting out with a variety and slowly weeding out the ones that didn’t interest you.
So now, instead of reading the entire history of the jet ski you were able to read through detailed pages of different types of fungi or flower species and their benefits to animals or nature on earth. At first it didn’t seem like the most interesting thing in the world, but after a while you couldn’t bring yourself to put it down.
You were reading about different types of wildflowers when your eyes drifted off the page to Mobius’ variant, who was stalking up behind your partner. Your lips twisted at the ugly brown jacket that branded him as a variant. You always hated those jackets.
“Look out.” You mumbled right as Loki rounded the table and stood next to you so he could talk to Mobius, not so much as glancing in your direction.
Mobius quietly muttered an “Oh, god” under his breath, sparing you a quick glance..
“I found something.” Loki announced, holding the documents in both hands.
Mobius didn’t even bother looking up at him as he continued to read his own magazine, only gesturing towards the mischievous variant with his hand as he spoke “No I said, “Don’t bother me until you’ve read all the files”.”
You place your magazine down on the table and straighten yourself in your chair, uncrossing your legs from beneath you.
“I have.” He insists.
“Every file?” Mobius questioned, to which Loki replied with a quick ‘yes’ no hesitancy to be found in his confident answer “Pertaining to the variant?”
You raised your brows, making eye contact with your partner “Trying to give my job away already, Mobius?” You playfully accused him.
“I just wanted to give him something to do while I was at lunch.” He shrugged, raising one hand in defense.
“Look okay, the answer isn’t in the files, it’s on the timeline.” Loki answered, already confident that he has all the answers you have been tirelessly looking for who knows how long. He only acknowledged you briefly when his eyes flicked to where you were sitting, probably having planned on taking your seat. He looked around behind him, pulling an unoccupied chair from a different table, and sat next to you so he could be across from Mobius too. “He’s hiding in apocalypses.”
You moved yourself away from the tall variant and more towards Mobius. Body temperature rising nervously at the close proximity of him invading your personal space. Your mouth twisting in displeasure at his rudeness.
The disturbance of you moving only caught the attention of Mobius. He grabbed your empty soup bowl and moved it off to the side of the table while you grabbed your magazine, the glossy paper smooth against your fingertips.
Once settled comfortably, you listened attentively to the theory Loki so proudly claimed to have, followed by a ridiculous display of destroying Mobius’ lunch.
He talked a lot, which wasn’t surprising. But it was with the way he talked, sentences carefully constructed with confidence that soaked into every word. He knew how to spin a lie and make it sound true, he knew how to make you doubt your own thoughts, and he especially knew how to betray others. Because he’s the trickster, the God of Mischief himself.
“Oh, Mobius, come on!” Loki persisted, “Why not let your lovely colleague here do it then?” He said, gesturing towards you, emerald eyes meeting yours briefly “What could possibly go wrong. We gotta properly test this theory.”
“Absolutely not. ” Mobius shuts him down immediately with a wave of his hand, “You really think I’m just gonna send my partner out with you of all people? In the middle of an apocalypse just so you can lure her out in the middle of a field and stab her in the back? That is not a risk I’m willing to take.” His voice was stern, giving Loki no wiggle room to argue.
Loki’s mouth hung open in offense at Mobius’ truthful accusation, immediately jumping to his own defense “I’d never stab anyone in the back. That’s such a boring form of betrayal!” You couldn’t stop the soft chuckle being blown through your nose, shaking your head.
The older man sighs “Loki, I’ve studied almost every moment of your entire life. You’ve literally stabbed people in the back, like, fifty times.”
“Well, I’d never do it again, because it got old!” The variant insists, trying with all his might to convince the agent.
Mobius chuckled once again, only replying with a simple “Okay.” already tired of the back and forth.
“Okay, look, you don’t trust me, you can trust one thing. I love to be right.”
The table fell silent. Mobius crossed his arms over his chest and stared down at his now destroyed salad. Salt, pepper and juice all mixed together in a disgusting concoction that Loki used as his theory.
Whether it made sense or not, it was a risk, and you were sure Mobius was thinking the same. Nobody wanted another missing Loki, and both of your jobs would be at risk if this ended up going sideways.
“What do you think?” Mobius asked you, breaking the tense silence that had woven itself around the three of you.
“I think it’s a stupid plan.” It was true, this plan could prove deadly in the end if you two weren’t careful. Someone ending up dead in a field could be a very real possibility, “We’ve been looking for this variant for so long… and I don’t trust him,” You narrowed your eyes at Loki, who was watching you intently “But if what he’s saying is true... It could be huge.”
Loki’s wide smile returns and he hits the table triumphantly making you jump “Well there you have it Mobius, two to one. Looks like your partner and I have a trip planned after all.”
Mobius shook his head and chuckled “She’s not taking you anywhere. You’re goin’ with me or you’re not goin’ at all. And that’s only if I consider doing this.”
“I don’t care who I go with,” Loki says “But I know I’m right about this, just let me show you. You won’t regret it.”

STORY MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
You felt tiredness nipping away at every little nerve you had left. The pile of files stacked higher and higher on your desk, fingers stiff from turning page after page regarding the missing Loki variant.
Being Mobius’ partner meant you were often tasked to look deeper into the variants he’s going after or working with, sometimes delving deeper into other variations if needed. Usually Mobius would help, but a meeting pulled your friend away earlier than you had wished.
You leaned back in your chair, stretching your back and groaning as your spine cracked loudly, echoing throughout your empty office. It was no surprise that your legs felt stiff much like your fingers, as you haven’t stood up from your chair in who knows how long. A sigh left your lips, your skin feeling warmer around your spine and thighs, a dull ache radiating from both areas.
Mobius has been so occupied recently with securing another variant’s place amongst your employers, insisting regularly that he could be of great importance to the mission of finding the escaped Loki variant. He hadn’t said much about the new variant, mainly because he didn’t have the time, but Mobius had insisted that he could be useful. You knew not to interfere with Mobius' plans, knowing that even you wouldn’t be able to talk him out of it. You just wished he would stop shouldering all of the burdens that fell onto the TVA, and you wished that you could do more to help.
After reading the same three sentences over and over you finally sigh and roll backwards away from your desk. Tiredness clouded your brain, your eyelids drooping as you stared at the door. So with one last glance at the manila files laying askew in front of you, you groaned in defeat. You knew that if you kept going you’d find yourself in a pool of drool and ruined soggy files by whatever was considered morning in the TVA.
Your office was colder than usual, making you shiver as you picked up your bag slowly, arms as stiff as your legs. “Fuck.” You groaned when feeling your spine crack again, sounding louder in the silent room. Your fingers twisted the knob and opened the door hearing the faint creak of rusting hinges. The chatter amongst your colleagues served as a reminder that the office never truly went silent. Employees were always sitting at their desk working away, waiting for their shift to end and be filled by another worker. Like bees in a hive.
The sound of your boots against the tile was drowned out by the rustling of paper, and fingers hurriedly typing on keyboards. You walked down the familiar hallways, fingers feeling the ridges on your bag’s strap as you walked.
Your mind drifted to Mobius, wondering how he was doing with the new variant. He had seemed especially stressed today, but as usual he insisted that it wasn’t anything to worry about. Of course it was pretty hard not to though, especially after the same variant he was working with tried to make some grand escape the second he saw an opening.
Mobius was probably the closest person to a family you had in this big place, a firm connection established by trust and spending almost all your time together. A small smile made your lips curve upwards briefly, your wandering fingers prodding the files in your bag.
You cursed quietly when you felt the smooth spine of a binder against your fingertip, completely forgetting you had borrowed something from the library earlier in the day.
’Well I guess I should return it.’ you thought to yourself, letting out a tired sigh and continuing down the hall with your new destination in mind.
The library was always so dark, shelves upon shelves lined up neatly with thousands of books and files holding all kinds of important timeline information. You went up to the front desk, sliding the book towards the lady sitting behind the counter. You rang the bell and stood silently waiting for her attention to be drawn to you.
“Yes?” She asked in a monotone voice, not bothering to turn away from her computer.
“Returning this binder.” You answered with a tired smile “Oh, those case files I asked for yesterday, are they back in?” She sat for a second thinking over your words before nodding.
“They were brought back earlier today.” You instinctively looked towards one of the bookshelves in the distance of the vast room, “I’m sure you can find them, Agent.”
“Thank you.” You pushed yourself off the counter, taking off towards the bookshelf.
Your eyes scanned the binders carefully. It was a binder of case files Mobius had been looking for on all the locations the Loki variant has gone to since escaping, hoping that analyzing the steps she’s taken would open any new doors or if it would be a dead end like always. It felt like the closer you got towards stopping her, she was always ten steps ahead, outsmarting even the smartest and strongest minute men. You just wished there was something more you could do rather than sitting in your office-
“Oh shit-” You gasped, accidentally bumping into another person when you rounded the corner of the bookshelf. You quickly distanced yourself, looking at the man in front of you. “Sorry, I didn’t see you.” You chuckled quietly. Knowing you probably looked as tired as you sounded.
“It’s quite alright.” He smiled charmingly at you. You looked at him for a few more seconds before nodding and walking past him, continuing your search for the files on the escaped Loki variant.
---
“Look what I found!” You said cheerfully as you slapped the files down on Mobius’ desk, as if finding them were some impressive feat harder than any other. Smiling down at him proudly, taking a seat in the chair next to his desk. He picked the files up and flipped the first one open, scanning the first few pages that documented encounters and all the information regarding her escape.
“Well I’ll be damned.” Mobius smiled at you, “Maybe there’ll finally be something that sticks out this time.” He praised, sliding it across his desk towards you.
“I doubt it. But hey, it's worth looking at I guess.” You answered, kicking your boots off and crossing your legs in your chair. You always spent more time in Mobius’ office than in your own, finding it easier to be with him while looking for clues so you could bounce your ideas off of him.
Once you were fully settled into your seat you looked back up at the man across from you, his brows drawn together in concentration “I ran into your little Loki variant last night. I didn’t know you were letting him free-roam.” You chuckle.
Mobius looked up at you over the rim of his coffee cup “I wanted to keep him busy while I was in my meeting. But either way he’s practically harmless compared to that other Loki.” He said, sliding in closer to his desk and setting his cup back down.
You played with the string sticking out of your sock lazily, “Didn’t he give you the slip recently?” You smirked.
Mobius rolled his eyes, smoothing his mustache down with his thumb and index finger “Yeah, yeah. I already had Ravonna get onto me for that one, I don’t need to hear it from you, again.”
A quiet laugh came from you, and you crossed your arms over your chest, cocking your head to the side and narrowing your eyes at him, “Mhmm… I’m just saying, I think it’s a stupid idea.” You raise your hands up in surrender, and open up one of the folders, flipping through the first few pages, “I trust you Mobius, I just don’t want this variant getting you into any trouble.”
Your partner sighed softly, taking another sip from his coffee mug. “I know… I just don’t know what else to do at this point.”
You knew what he meant. The never ending game of cat and mouse was getting tiring, the hunters always on edge when preparing for a mission, your nerves wearing thin from the endless searching, and Mobius’ stress only stacking higher as he tries his hardest to find a possible solution. You all wanted this to come to an end, and if using a Loki to find a Loki would help, then you would reluctantly take that route.

STORY MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
If someone had told you yesterday that you’d be trapped in an apocalypse trying to break into a woman’s house with two variants, you probably would have laughed.
Yet here you were, standing with the blonde Loki variant that went by the alias Sylvie, while watching Loki put on the illusion of an older man. He slouched and trembled as he walked up to the woman’s now open door, way too confident in his own ability to upstage Sylvie, who failed to even set foot inside the small home.
“He doesn’t think this is actually going to work does he?” Sylvie asks, glancing at you out of the corner of her eye.
“Oh I'm absolutely sure he does.” You reply quietly, crossing your arms.
Just when Loki takes another step towards the door he’s launched like Sylvie had been. Flying backwards, the force of the pulse weapon destroys his illusion in the process. He slides across the dirt to where Sylvie was crouched. You shook your head, watching him sit up with a grunt, dusting his hands off and running a hand through his hair.
You look back at the house where the woman still sat.
“Patrice never said a thing that nice in thirty years. You’re not travelers, you’re devils.” She says, talking about who you assumed to be her husband, the man Loki had presented himself as.
“Yikes…” You whisper looking back down at the two variants.
Sylvie lightly pushed her hand against Loki’s arm “Which one was that? Diplomacy? Or-”
“Don’t. Just don’t.” He interrupted her, waving his index finger in front of himself. Sylvie chuckles, placing her hands on her hips.
The woman stepped out of her house, heavy weapon in her hands. You could understand the paranoia. It was the end of the world and having three strangers try to get into your house, with one of the strangers taking on the form of your deceased or missing husband, attacking was a reasonable response.
“What do you devils want with me?” She asked, squinting suspiciously at the three of you.
Sylvie held her hand out in surrender, “We just wanna ask you a question.” She spoke calmly, “Where is everyone?” Both variants stepped closer to the woman’s house, Sylvie lowering her hands.
“The ark.” The woman replies, seeming shocked that she would even ask, “The evacuation vessel.”
Sylvie looked over at Loki saying that the ark would be just what you needed in order to recharge the TemPad.
You glanced towards both of them before asking the older woman, “How can we get to it? The vessel.”
“Train station’s on the edge of town. But you’ll never get a ticket.” She replies.
And with that you were off, Sylvie leading the way while you trailed behind both her and Loki.
You could only pray they didn’t end up just leaving you on this moon. You hoped they didn’t decide that you were going to be too much trouble and that you needed to go, leverage be damned.
You just wanted to get back home to Mobius, still holding onto hope that he was okay.
When you all got closer to the train station you saw how long the line was “Oh god…” You say quietly “There’s so many people.” Your heart clenches, watching all of them beg hopelessly to be let on the train, but none of the guards budged from their places. “How are we ever going to get on the train without starting something?”
Sylvie looked at you, seeing your sorrowful expression as you watched the crowd before turning back to Loki “I’m going to enchant a guard, have him lead us through the crowd, and if anyone gives us any trouble…” She trailed off, leaving it open to interpretation.
Loki fills in the rest “Make him start shooting? And then what, kill every guard and hijack the train?” You looked at the both of them with widened eyes, hoping that wasn’t the plan they would actually settle on. If so they were more monstrous than you thought.
“Whether or not there’s a fight is entirely up to them.” Sylvie replies.
“We’re doing this one my way.” Loki whispered, grabbing Sylvie by the shoulders and manifesting the same outfit the guards were wearing onto himself in a green glow. “How do I look?”
“Like someone with a shit plan.” Sylvie says, looking up at him.
“It’s a great plan.” Loki defends himself leaving Sylvie to only hum, looking sceptical.
You looked at him up and down “You look ridiculous.” Sylvie nodded.
“Oh just come on.” Loki urged, going to stand between you and Sylvie, leading both of you through the gate and to the train with a hand on both of your backs.
The people in line shouted to be let on, yelling at boarding passengers and the guards that they were only letting the wealthy board. Even though you knew that it wouldn’t matter, that everyone would meet the same fate, it still made you feel guilty. Not able to help all the people that were being treated with injustice even during the end of the world.
You looked at the crowd, seeing a woman crying while cradling her child, whispering in her ear while rocking her.
You guessed Loki could feel you slowing down because he leaned closer to you “You can’t save them all, you know?” He said. Your eyes lingered on the crowd for a second longer before you were finally able to tear your eyes away.
“I know.” Your voice was but a whisper.
The two people in front of you wore fancy, intricate clothing, with a material that almost resembled wrinkled tablecloth. That being said, the clothes weren’t entirely flattering. They handed the guards their ticket and boarded the train, not paying any mind to the people they were leaving to die.
The three of you tried to enter the train directly behind them, hoping that Loki’s disguise alone would help, but it was never that easy.
“Woah! Hey!” The ticket guard said, walking in front of you with his hand.
“Taking these two to Shuroo.” Loki said, putting on a voice.
“Okay. And the tickets?” The guard asked.
“Orders come from the top to get them on this train.” Loki urges.
“Sir, this-” He started, being cut off by Sylve grabbing his bicep.
The other guard that was standing off to the side turned around. You gave him a closed-lip smile when he made eye contact with you, turning to his colleague to ask if everything was okay.
“Yeah, everything’s fine. I just remembered that headquarters radioed in their request for them this morning.” The man sounded winded suddenly, swaying back and forth on his heels while clutching his gun.
The other guard sighs, saying “Okay.” in a monotone voice. The guard Sylvie had touched stepped to the side and let you all past. Sylvie and you walked up the stairs first, Loki following last. The door to the train car hissed as it opened, Loki giving his greeting to the passengers, still putting on the act of guard.
The room was overwhelmingly fancy. The walls are mint green, some seating areas a salmon pink while others were lavender. Sylvie was the first to sit, and you followed sitting on the opposite side. Loki immediately voiced his complaints by saying he can’t sit backwards on a train.
“Well, I never sit with my back to a door.” Sylvie says, glancing between her male counterpart and you.
“What?” He looked around the car, “There are doors on both sides.”
“Just sit down Loki.” You let out a sigh, sliding towards the middle of the U shaped booth so he had enough room.
Sylvie leaned forward on the table, looking at Loki and saying “FYI, that wasn’t even a plan.”
“Oh really?” Loki asks.
“Plans have multiple steps.” Sylvie started, both of you watched as Loki acknowledged two passing guards by bowing his head “Dressing as a guard and getting on a train is just doing a thing.”
Loki didn’t reply, the table falling quiet briefly.
You tried not to fiddle too much, not feeling entirely comfortable being wedged between the two variants. Especially when one wanted you dead, and the other wanted to use you as leverage and then probably kill you. Your hands stayed in your lap, fingers played with a button on your blazer while looking at the circular light placed in the center of the table.
A yawn cut through the silence making you look up at Sylvie who had a hand hovering in front of her mouth.
“Oh, you a bit tired? Feel free to, you know, get some rest.” Loki teased.
Sylvie let out a grunt ”I can’t sleep in a place like this.”
“You can’t sleep on a train?” He asked, his brows knitting together.
“No. I can’t sleep around untrustworthy people.” Sylvie said, looking at both you and Loki.
“Oh, right. That me?” He whispers back, crossing his arms on the table, quickly looking at you “Sorry. Us?” he pointed between you and him, you nodded.
She ignored him, “But you feel free to take a nap.”
Loki leaned forward a little more saying “Nice try.” and smiling.
Sylvie rolled her eyes “I’m not gonna waste my time rooting around for the TemPad when someone taught you fairly decent magic.”
The conversation was surprisingly calm, both variants actually talking to each other like people instead of fighting or trying to one up each other, aside from the occasional quips.
They talked about their lives before the TVA, Loki reminiscing about his mother, and Sylvie revealing that she doesn’t remember much about her own. Which didn’t surprise you; she was only a child when she was arrested.
Loki went on to talk about the little bits of magic his mother would do for him, like turning a flower into a frog, or casting fireworks over the water and how impossible it seemed.
“She told me that I’d be able to do it too because… Because I could do anything.” He recalled, speaking softly, looking up at Sylvie who had a small smile on her lips, her eyes glassy. “You wanna see?” Loki opened his hand, tiny fireworks flying from his palm.
Sylvie and you watched them whistle and crackle for a few seconds before she just says “Not bad.” While shrugging.
Loki closed his hand, the fireworks sizzling and fading away. He continued his storytelling, saying how his mother was the type of person you’d want to believe in you.
“Sounds like she does.” Sylvie says.
Loki looks down at the table and nods “Well, she did.” There’s a brief pause, “So how’d you learn to do the…” He mimicked what she had done earlier in the mining shack when she put her hands on his neck, reaching towards her but not actually touching her “You know, the… Whatever is it?”
“I taught myself.” Sylvie smiles.
“You taught yourself that magic?” Loki raises his eyebrows in surprise, tilting his head.
“Yeah, I did.” She nods, smiling a little wider at the thought of her impressive abilities.
“What do you just… You just go into their minds and project some sort of illusion?”
“Really it’d be easier if I just sho-” Sylvie started moving her hands close to him.
“Enchanted me and take the TemPad so you can leap out the train? No, thank you.” Loki interrupted, speaking quickly.
“Well then don’t ask.”
“Okay.” He whispers in reply, narrowing his eyes.
A woman walked up to your table, “Champagne?” a tray of three flute glasses balanced carefully in her hand.
“Ah, yes. Thank you very much.” Loki says grabbing a glass, the lady offers one to Sylvie which she rejects “Oh, I’ll take hers. Thank you.”
She then offers the tray to you, you grab the glass carefully, smiling at the lady kindly “Thank you.”
“Cheers.” Loki smiles, clinking both of his glasses together and then one of them with yours “To the end of the world.”
“And pity the old woman that chose to die, don’t you think?” He placed his drink down, bringing up the lady with the pulse weapon that directed the three of you to the station.
You nodded slowly, taking a swig of your own champagne. It was citrusy, with a hint of peach, the taste of alcohol not too overbearing but just enough to be decently okay.
“She was in love.” Sylvie replies.
“She hated him.” Loki states.
“Maybe love is hate.” She shrugs.
Loki placed his glass down, sitting there for a second “Should probably remember that” He conjures a quill and parchment looking back up to Sylvie “What was that? “Love is… Love is hate”.”
You chuckle quietly at Loki’s antics while taking another sip of your drink.
The conversation went on smoothly from there, the both of them asking the other about their own love lives which were painfully similar. Occasional partners, but nothing that was ever real enough to call love, you guessed you could say the same for yourself though.
The TVA never really opened up many opportunities to have a relationship, the work was constant and you didn’t have time to waste on something as trivial as a relationship that wouldn’t stick. If you were being completely honest, it wasn’t even something you really thought about until they both brought it up, making you realize that the only real connection you have with anyone is with Mobius.
Loki comments how he would probably have to get another drink if he were to really delve deeper into the topic of love. Immediately drowning the rest of Sylvie’s rejected drink, which she tried to dissuade, saying that you all should rest. But Loki merely smiles, saying that she could rest her way, just like how you and him would do.
She gave him the smallest smile before rolling her eyes, resting her head on her crossed on and closing her eyes.
A few minutes passed before Loki looked at you, his brows drawing together, “So, why exactly wouldn’t Miss. Renslayer let you join the task force in finding Sylvie? I thought you were Mobius’ partner?” He asks, playing with the stem to the empty flute glass still in front of him.
You looked at him, thinking his question over a few times trying to figure out whether or not you even wanted to say. Even if it wasn’t something he could use against you.
“You tell me something first.” You said, taking another drink of your champagne, “What did you do with Mobius when you decided to betray him?” You asked, narrowing your eyes at him.
Loki shook his head softly with a smile, “Don’t worry your precious agent is still fully intact. I didn’t touch him.”
The silence stretched long as you weighed his words in your mind. You could only hope that he was telling you the truth, and for now it’s all you have to rely on until you’re able to escape this moon, if they even allow you to leave with them.
“My job was to go to different locations where there were spikes in the Sacred Timeline, gather evidence, and bring in the more dangerous variants. Stuff like that.“ You explain, looking down at the table with a sad smile. “I loved my job because I felt like I was actually making a difference, like I was helping take steps towards peace and saving people who needed saving.”
You sigh, crossing your arms over the table, “Okay.” You nod softly.
“Believe it or not, I was actually allowed to leave the TVA at one point.” You start, your fingers playing with the button on your blazer’s sleeve, “In fact I used to lead my own field missions.” Loki’s brows furrowed, but stayed quiet as he listened.
“So what changed?” Loki asks, tilting his head a little with intrigue.
“Oh you know, I got stabbed.” You shrug, watching Loki’s brows shoot up in surprise “I mean sure I’ve had my number of close calls while on the job. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve almost gotten killed by pissed off variants. But this one was just so quiet...“ Your hand clenched as the memories flooded your mind.
“I was walking to Mobius’ office to ask him if he wanted to get lunch, and the second I walked around the corner I got a letter opener to the gut.” Loki winces, “Yeah. And it fucking hurt by the way, still have the scar from it.” You chuckled bitterly.
Loki signalled the woman at the bar asking for two more glasses of champagne, when she came over Loki handed you a glass and took one for himself, handing her the empty glasses from earlier.
“Thanks.” You whisper, taking a drink and sitting in silence for a few seconds “After I got stabbed, I don’t really remember anything… I don’t even remember hitting the floor.”
“Nothing?” Loki asks.
You shook your head, “Nothing.” you gulped down more of your drink.
“I was in recovery for a while. But when I was fully healed I was so ready to get back to work.” You smiled softly, remembering how hard you had trained. “Of course, Ravonna had other ideas though, she said that ‘it would probably be for the best if I stayed in the background for a while’. Doing paperwork, helping Mobius find answers for his cases, and doing variant research, which I suck at.” You shook your head, swallowing harshly around the rock forming in your throat.
“Basically after that I wasn’t allowed to go back on the field.” You went quiet, remembering how disappointed you felt when she broke the news to you.
“The guy who stabbed me wasn’t even my variant, which is what always gets me. It felt like I was being punished for something that wasn’t even my fault.” You said, shaking your head to yourself. “I tried asking why she wouldn’t let me go back to my actual job. But she always just gives me the same answer, “you’ll be able to work when you’re ready”.” You couldn’t help but roll your eyes.
You downed the rest of your champagne and smiled at the raven haired variant, “So yeah that’s why I wasn’t allowed to go with you guys. Happy?”
The drinks kept coming after that, and so did the conversation. It was a lot easier talking to Loki thanks to the alcohol. He was surprisingly good at listening, but he was also good at talking just enough for the both of you.
He was telling you about his brother, Thor, a fourth glass of champagne in his hand. He had a smile on his face as he told you about a time when they were eight and Loki turned himself into a snake, resulting in his brother being stabbed by Loki’s blade.
You couldn’t hold back the laughter that bubbled from you “That’s horrible!” You said, listening to Loki laugh too.
It wasn’t long before things started to go off the rails. Loki had noticed one of the passengers had a cello case sitting next to their leg. Which led him to getting up and asking if she could play anything.
Soon enough you had taken Loki’s seat, watching him sing with the other passengers in the train car. They were clapping, singing, and dancing along with the trickster. You were smiling wide, swaying from side to side, giggling quietly to yourself as he danced with one of the passengers. It was so hard to believe that he had hurt so many people when you saw how he was now, happy and a little drunk.
You looked over at Sylvie, watching her slowly raise her head from her arms. “Oh Sylvie, you’re awake.” You say, smiling at her kindly, your words slurring a little.
It probably wasn’t a good idea trying to keep up with a god while drinking, but even then you somehow still felt okay.
She stared at you for a second, not saying anything before turning her head to look at Loki, straightening in her seat a little waving at the trickster to get his attention, he looked at her waving back wildly.
“Where’s your uniform?” She asked him quietly, but he just continued singing.
You lean your face in the palm of your hand, a smile still plastered to your face as you watch Loki shush the other singing passengers, leaning against the bar in the middle of the car. He was the only one singing now, his eyes on you as his beautiful voice washed over you, giving you goosebumps.
The moment didn’t last long though. He started the upbeat singing once again, clapping his hands, and the passengers joined him once again.
The song was coming to a close and he said “To Y/N and Sylvie everybody!” downing the rest of his martini, his face screwing up a little before yelling “Another!” And smashing the glass against the bar.
You covered your mouth, a loud laugh coming from you partly from shock.
Sylvie was suddenly up on her feet walking over to Loki and pulling him closer to your booth “You’re both drunk.” She said, looking back at where you still sat in Loki’s seat.
You giggle drunkenly, nodding.
“No, I’m just full. But bear in mind, I’m very full. She on the other hand is drunk.” He said with a smile, pointing at you. “Now, I need you to try this. It pairs very nicely with the Figgy Port. Who’s got the Figgy Port.” He looks around the car, looking at her again “You have to take my word on the Figgy Port.”
You got up from the booth, swaying a little on your feet and letting out a string of giggles. Loki looked at you, catching your wrist just in case you fell, laughing with you. He pulled you a little closer making you stumble forward and bump into him.
You smiled at him, saying “Thanks.” and walking over to the bar, trying not to step on the broken glass on the floor. You asked the woman behind the bar for some water, at least wanting to try and sober up a little before charging the TemPad. She handed you a glass bottle of water, smiling at you kindly, you thanked her and walked back to your booth and sat down again, not feeling like falling on your ass in front of everyone.
“I think something’s happening.” Sylvie said.
“Yes.” Loki pointed up at the glass ceiling, “Uh, that planet is about to crash into us.”
“Don’t be an ass. I saw some people looking at you weirdly.” Sylvie says, rolling her eyes.
“What?” Loki looks around, the small dish he was holding clattering to the ground when he attempted to place it back on the bar. He looks down at it for a second before looking back up at Sylvie.
“When did you get so paranoid?” He asks
“It must have started when I spent my entire life running from the omniscient fascists you both work for.” She says. You tilt your head a little not entirely understanding what she meant by that.
Your water was halfway gone at this point and you were starting to feel better, your brain less foggy.
Loki sighs, looking back down at the food he dropped, pointing at it “It’s a shame to let that go to waste.” Sylvie uncrossed her arms, looking from him to you, “Hey! Change of subject.” He stepped a lot closer to her, his hands out in front of him “I thought of an answer.”
She backed up “To what?”
“Your question. Love is a dagger.” He conjures a small dagger into his hand “It’s a weapon to be wielded far away or up close.” He held the blade up, “You can see yourself in it. It’s beautiful.” He turns the blade back on himself “Until it makes you bleed,” the handle facing Sylvie now “But ultimately, when you reach for it.” And she does, the dagger disappearing before she can close her fingers around the handle.
“It isn’t real.” She finishes.
“Yeah.” Loki nods.
“Love is an imaginary dagger.” She smiles.
Loki furrowed his brows “Doesn’t make sense, does it?”
She shakes her head “No. Terrible metaphor.”
You chuckle, looking at the both of them “Oh trust me he’s never been good at them.” You say remembering the long, drawn out metaphor Loki used while ruining Mobius’ salad.
“Damn, I thought I had something there.” He sighs, making Sylvie shake her head.
Before she could say anything the doors to the train car hissed open, both her and Loki looked at both doors, guards walking into the car. “Uh oh” you mutter, downing the little you had left of your water.
One of the guards came up to Loki asking for his tickets.
“You again. Hello.” Loki chuckles smiling wide at him, you slowly stood from the booth, standing by your table.
Loki chuckles, “Um, tickets. Yes, of course. Here they are.” Loki raised his hand, more fireworks firing from his palm, instead of the tickets he was probably planning to conjure. “Oops. Still it looks lovely doesn’t it?” The guards behind him grabbed one of his arms, forcing them behind his back. “Look, is this really necessary? There is a simple explanation.”
A guard put a hand on his chest trying to stop him from struggling against the guard holding him “Hey.” Loki said, placing his own hand on the guard’s chest.
Before you knew it Loki was pushing the guard in front of him back by his helmet, whirling around and grabbing the guard behind him by the wrist, twisting the guard’s right hand until you heard a loud crunch of his wrist.
He elbowed the guard he had pushed in the helmet right before he could hit Loki with his baton. The fight was quickly executed, Loki’s skills impressive even when drunk.
You watched a guard walk up to Sylvie, and another came for you.
The guard in front of you brought down their baton, which you were surprisingly able to dodge. You braced yourself, turning your body and putting your full force into the kick you delivered into the guard's side. They stumbled to the side, giving you the time to grab them by the back of their uniform and slam their helmet into a nearby table. They tried to get back up, but you delivered another blow to their helmet with your boot, kicking their helmet forcefully leaving the visor cracked and the guard knocked out.
You pant softly, bringing your hand to your head as you stabilize yourself against the wooden bar. Yeah, drinking was definitely a bad idea.
You could hear Sylvie struggling, a guard behind her having his arm around her neck. Loki tried to throw a dagger, but completely missed as he hit the doorframe, which you were slightly thankful for because it almost looked like it was going to hit Sylvie.
Before you could go and help her, you felt a hand grab your forearm. You reached for the closest bottle on the bar, smashing it against the guards helmet and grabbing them with your free hand, pulling them down so you could slam your knee into their visor, hearing them groan. They straightened themselves back up and you kicked them roughly in the chest, sending them backwards into one of the open salmon colored seats.
You heard glass break and a yell as Loki kicked one of the guards out of a window, waving after them. Two guards caged him in and threw him out the window after them.
“Shit!” You yelled, wide eyes looking over at Sylvie.
“TemPad.” She says, ripping her sword out of the wooden top of the bar. Pushing past one of the guards and diving out of the window after Loki.
“Oh fuck...” You whisper. “Okay.” You jumped up and down a few times, shaking off the nerves and running towards the remaining guard who went to look out the window. You grabbed him by the back of his uniform, wrenching him away from the window and throwing him to the floor.
You let out a quick breath and diving out the window before you could psych yourself out. Broken glass cut into your hands, bicep and thigh as you jumped, and the impact when you hit the ground knocked the wind out of you, but luckily nothing felt broken, and the pain was a lot better than being arrested and dying on this damned moon.

After the endless pestering from Loki, Mobius finally caved and they were off to Pompeii, Italy. On the off chance that what Loki is saying is in fact true then it could be a big step to finding the escaped variant. And as usual, Mobius threw caution to the wind and agreed.
So here you sat at the small table in your kitchen, anxiously toying with the handle of your coffee cup while you waited for Mobius to return. The coffee was bitter, not enough sugar, but you couldn’t force yourself away from looking out the large circular window in your kitchen. A much needed distraction after the eventful lunch you had.
You had tried to read, finding it was too hard to focus on the words. Hell you even tried to work, but without fail Loki’s apocalypse theory would begin swirling around in your head, mocking you.
You felt bested by the variant. This was something that you have been working tirelessly on, losing sleep over, yet he was able to find a possible answer so easily. Further proving that Ravonna made a mistake demoting you to variant research.
A frustrated sigh left your lips, fingers tapping rhythmically on your mug while you brought your other hand to your mouth, quickly getting lost in your thoughts.
“If you keep chewing on that nail you won’t have a thumb by morning.”
You let out a gasp, your body flinching violently at the unexpected voice behind you, your coffee sloshing over the rim and onto your lap, the liquid still scalding hot.
“Fuck!” You cursed, quickly standing and spinning around to see Mobius standing in the archway of your kitchen, worried and already rushing to grab the towel sitting by your sink. “Mobius, what the hell?! Don’t sneak up on me like that!”
“Sorry about that. I called your name, but I guess you didn’t hear me.” He gave you an apologetic smile, handing you the purple towel.
You let out a sigh, annoyed with your own jumpiness. “How’d the apocalypse test go?” You changed the subject while trying to dab the coffee out of your pants, knowing it was useless.
“It worked. Loki was right, when the volcano erupted there was no variant energy detected.” Mobius was excited, finally seeing a break in the fog you had all been in.
You couldn’t help but feel relieved too. Hoping that this could be exactly what you all needed to catch up with Loki’s counterpart and arrest her before she killed more hunter units. Finally bringing an end to the bloodshed and allowing the TVA to go back to normal.
“So where’s Loki?” You asked, looking behind Mobius to see your living room was empty.
“I left him in the library so I could come find you. We’re gonna be reading up on the other apocalypses to try and pinpoint where this Loki variant is.” Mobius answered, “You’re more than welcome to join us, we’re gonna need all the help we can get.”
You shrug, turning around to pick up your mug and sit it in the sink, “Sure, I mean I don’t have anything else better to do, right?” You smiled, “Let me just get changed first.”
“Oh yeah, ‘course.” Mobius says, going into your living room and sitting down on your couch “I’ll be here.”
---
You couldn’t stop the yawn that forced itself from your mouth, tiredness and non stop reading made your eyes burn. When you looked up it was hard to focus on anything, your vision blurry and an oncoming headache already making itself known. While you were happy to finally be doing research with Mobius again, it was still just as exhausting as ever.
“God I’ll tell ya, I sure don’t miss doing this.” Mobius groaned from next to you, closing the file he was reading about the California tsunami of 2043.
“Thrilling isn’t it?.” You chuckled humorlessly and closed your own file, letting out a long sigh and rubbing your tired eyes.
Mobius hummed “Oh yeah, can’t get enough.” He replies sarcastically, gently bumping Loki’s arm with the file he had been reading “Hey.” Loki lifted his head, blinking up at you and Mobius  “Come on, let’s take a walk.”
You stretched your arms over your head, back popping and another yawn coming from you as you followed behind, hands comfortably placed in the pockets of your blazer. ’God I need more coffee.’ you thought to yourself, rubbing at your eyes once again as you made your way down the long halls with Mobius and the variant.
The three of you walked inside the cafeteria, the room was almost entirely empty besides one man. Mobius opted on taking one of the bigger tables that had four chairs.
You immediately made your way to the coffee station, pouring the still steaming brew in an orange cup and putting a generous amount of sugar and creamer in after, stirring it together with a small plastic spoon. After concluding that it tasted okay you joined the two back at your table, careful not to disturb the conversation they were having.
“You know, some things…. Actually, most things in history are kinda dumb and everything gets ruined eventually” Mobius says, drawing your attention. “But in the early 1990s, for a brief, shining moment, there was a beautiful union of form and function, which we call the jet ski, and a reasonable man cannot differ.” You hummed, having heard this same speech time and time again when talking to Mobius about jet skis.
“You ever been on one?” Loki asks, smiling a little.
“No…” Mobius shook his head, looking down at the floor “No. I think a TVA agent showing up on a jet ski on the Sacred Timeline, that would create a branch for sure.” You nodded along, watching them talk from over the rim of your cup.
Loki tilts his head “It’d be fun, though.” He comments.
“Yeah, it’d be really fun.” Mobius muses, a small smile forming on his lips.
“So why read about them?” The variant asked, talking about Mobius’ magazines.
“Just helps remind me of what we’re fighting for.” Mobius says. “It’s the simple things that keep us going.” Mobius says, looking at you with a small smile. You return it, taking a sip of your coffee that was doing a good job of keeping your hands warm.
Your eyes wandered around the empty cafeteria, not really paying attention to the conversation anymore as hunger started to claw at your stomach. There was a small snack cart next to the coffee station. It was half stocked with packets of nuts, cookies, and small pastries. You quietly excused yourself, careful not to completely interrupt them but still listening intently to their back and forth on how ridiculous everything sounded in retrospect. Mobius saying how the TVA may have sounded unbelievable, but it was just as unbelievable as Loki’s own life, you heard your partner list off various things to prove that point.
“It’s not the same.” Loki insists.
You turn around on, two bags of cookies and pretzels now in one hand with a cup of coffee for Mobius in the other. “I don’t know… it sounds pretty similar.” You chuckled, sitting back down across from the trickster and next to Mobius, setting his coffee and a pack of cookies down in front of him.
“Thanks.” He smiles at you kindly, taking a sip from the coffee only to draw back with his lips puckered “That’s a lot of sugar.”
“It’s not the same, it’s completely different.” Loki argues, now looking between the both of you.
You shrug, batting away Mobius’ hand when he tries to reach for one of your pretzels.
“Uh, actually, it’s exactly the same.” Mobius starts, chewing on one of the small cookies, “Because if you think too hard about where any of us came from, who we truly are, it sounds kinda ridiculous.” He takes another sip from his coffee, thankfully not cringing this time as he became accustomed to the sweet taste “Existence is chaos. Nothing makes any sense, so we try to make some sense of it. And I’m just lucky that the chaos I emerged into gave me all of this… My own glorious purpose.” Loki scoffs at that, but not saying anything letting Mobius continue talking “‘Cause the TVA is my life. And it’s real because I believe it’s real.”
Loki stares at him for a second, then looks over at you, you nod in agreement to what Mobius had said.
“Fair enough. You believe it’s real.” Loki starts.
Mobius responds with a quiet “Yeah.”
“So everything’s written. Past, present, future. There’s no such thing as free will.” The variant states.
“Well, I mean, you know, it’s an oversimplification.” Mobius nods.
The conversation was beginning to get muddy in your mind, even with the coffee, exhaustion from stress and lack of sleep gripped at your body. Making it hard to focus on any one thing, let alone grip onto the existential conversation they were having. You tilted your head back and looked up at the lights on the ceiling, blinking slowly. Letting their conversation of how the TVA would end drift into the background briefly.
“No chaos? It sounds boring.” Loki says, drawings his brows together, hand sliding against the table.
Mobius shook his head a little, lips drawing in a line before saying “I’m sure it does to you.”
“You called me a scared little boy.” Loki states suddenly.
’Where the hell did that come from?’ you thought, lifting your head to look at Loki, confused at the dramatic shift in the conversation that you had only been half listening to.
“I called you a lot of things.” Mobius says.
“You did. You’re wrong though. You see, I know something children don’t.” Loki’s voice was much more serious now, ominous in tone as he leaned forward in his seat.
“What’s that?” Mobius asks, tilting his head.
“That no one bad is ever truly bad. And no one good is ever truly good.”
There was a beat of silence before Mobius spoke, “Scared little boy.” he whispers.
“Yes, it was quite patronizing. I thought it was a bit too far, actually.” Loki said, drawing his brows together.
You chuckled quietly before glancing at Mobius, watching him stare at Loki. You could practically see the wheels turning in his head before a metaphorical lightbulb went off over his head.
“You’re very clever.” He said to the variant, getting up from his chair and making his way to the door.
“What?” “I know?” Both you and Loki said at the same time.
You watched Mobius’ retreating figure, looking back at Loki. “Where the hell is he going?” You ask, only receiving a shrug before Loki was up to his feet too, and you were quick to follow the both of you following Mobius.
---
After Mobius’ sudden departure you were back in the library. Splitting files between the three of you looking for a connection between apocalypses and the evidence Mobius had found on a kid not too long ago after a unit had been killed. While reading about disaster after disaster between the years 2047 and 2051, Loki finally found the one you were all looking for.
The Loki variant was in Haven Hills, Alabama, in the year 2050 during a class ten apocalypse that had a tragic casualty of 10,835 people, all of them fallen victim to a category eight hurricane. After the discovery Mobius was up and moving, wanting to discuss the most recent discovery with Ravonna and plan an immediate field mission.
“Do you think she’ll agree?” Loki asks, looking from Ravonna’s office doors to you, who had opted to sit on the opposite couch as him.
You shrug, playing with a piece of fuzz inside your blazer pocket “It’s hard to say. She can be pretty stubborn sometimes. But when it comes to Mobius... She trusts him, so we’ll just have to see if she trusts him this much.”
“Wow…” Loki stares, a small smirk on his lips, “That’s probably the most I’ve ever heard you speak.” You roll your eyes, looking at the floor.
“Yeah well, It’s hard to talk when someone doesn’t shut up.” Loki’s brows shot up in surprise, “And you talk a lot, like, a lot.” You chuckle, smiling at the trickster briefly before your eyes shift to the hourglass patterned double doors that lead into Ravonna’s office.
“And you’re very rude.” Loki says.
The door opened before you could reply, watching Mobius walk through the door hastily saying “We’re on.” Loki stood and so did you, Mobius quietly said your name, looking at you sadly.
You could already feel the pit forming in your stomach already knowing what he was going to say “She said you’ll have to stay behind.” He placed a hand on your shoulder, squeezing gently.
“Yeah that always seems to be the case, doesn’t it?” You mutter, tucking your hands back into the pockets of your blazer.
“Well,” You let out a long sigh, stopping when you all got to the elevator, you look down at your scuffed boots, annoyance bubbling in your stomach “Catch that variant will you?” Your smile was forced, face softening a little when you saw the sympathetic look on Mobius’ face.
“I tried to convince her…” He started, but you waved him off, placing your hands on his shoulders.
“It’s fine Mobius.” The hug you pulled him into was tight, a worried, ‘you better come back to me in one piece’ kind of hug. Loki watched the two of you with silent curiosity, his hands tucked into the pockets of his variant jacket while waiting for the elevator. “Alright, alright. Go. Please be safe.”
Mobius chuckled “Aren’t I always?” He asks, ruffling your hair making you groan.
“Ugh, I’m serious.” You chuckled, smoothing your hair down again and pushing Mobius’ shoulder playfully. You waved to him as you backed away, beginning your long trek down the long halls.

STORY MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
It’s been weeks since the TVA was no longer under the watch of He Who Remains. A lot of people were lost on where to go now, what they were going to do now that their job was meaningless. A lot of others still continued monitoring the timeline closely, any nexus events being watched closely without interfering. And The Time Theater was a much more active place now, people requesting access to their memory tapes that had been hidden stashed away with the other variant’s tapes.
Meanwhile you were spending a lot of your time exploring other places by yourself. After being kept from field missions for so long, it was a literal breath of fresh air when you stepped out on earth-19999. This time without an assignment, you were there by your own volition.
The streets of New York were bustling, people walking to and from their jobs, obvious tourists ogling the buildings that towered overhead, and others just walking through the streets looking for something to do much like you were.
“Alright, where are we going?” You jump when you hear Loki’s voice, his hands adjusting the bottom of his black blazer as he seemingly popped out of nowhere.
“What?” You answer dumbly “Why are you here?”
“Mobius was busy, Sylvie is still sulking, and I’m bored.” He shrugs, turning to you and tucking his hands into his pants pockets.
You stare at him for a few seconds before sighing. You knew he had been feeling just as suffocated, especially with Sylvie shutting everyone out, he needed a break much like you did. So you weren’t going to deny his company. It was just strange that Loki suddenly wanted to spend time with you, as he hadn’t really paid much attention to anyone aside from Mobius ever since He Who Remains was killed.
“I like the new outfit.” You comment, looking at his fully perfectly tailored black suit, no doubt conjured by the man himself. You couldn’t deny it was definitely doing a lot more for him than the outfits the TVA had provided.
“Yes, well, I couldn’t stand those scratchy dress shirts anymore.”
You hummed in agreement “Yeah, they are pretty uncomfortable. I think I’ve just gotten so used to them that I don’t notice.” Your fingers grazed over the front of your own boring dress shirt.
The both of you started walking down the sidewalk holding a somewhat steady conversation about how the timeline was going, Sylvie’s reluctance to talk, and your exploration of various different planets after earning back your free will.
A storefront caught your eyes when you walked by, the door wide open and soft jazz playing from inside. You slowed to a stop to look at the sign that read ‘Louise Floral’ in pink chalk with a fifty percent off sign for Thyme at the bottom. There had to be at least thirty different potted plants outside, pots ranging in size and color, all of them beautifully taken care of. You couldn’t help but stare at all of them in awe, looking back at Loki hopefully.
“Would you like to go inside?” Loki asked, a small smile on his lips.
“Just for a second. If that’s okay with you.” You looked at him.
“I don’t mind.” He follows you inside.
The shop smelled of roses with a hint of citrus, large skylight windows illuminated the shop. There were also many different display tables of flowers, seeds, pots, and even an entire bookshelf full of flower scented candles.
You snap out of your daze long enough to give a small wave to the owner, complimenting her how beautiful her shop was and the amazing care put into her flowers.
The older woman smiled gratefully, thanking you.
You went to look around the rest of the shop, admiring the table of beautiful bouquets before finding yourself over at the table of seed packets. They had a really good selection, various cistus species, rhododendron, and epiphyllums. There was also a decently sized shelf that had various gardening catalogues, books on different flower species, and even a book about flowers and their meanings.
Loki was over at the candle section, popping the top off of each glass holder and bringing it to his nose, strands of dark hair falling in front of his face as he looked down at a lily scented candle.
“Ready to go?” He asked when you walked closer. You nod, looking at the store one last time.
“Yeah, I think so.” You nod, wishing you had money to at least buy something.
Loki puts the candle back where he found it, gently tucking it into the vacant space. You both walk out of the store and continue walking down the sidewalk like you had been before.
Loki says your name softly, making you look at him “I need to tell you something important. Something I’ve been meaning to bring up since setting the TVA free.” He starts, looking at you while you both idly walk along the streets of the city.
“What is it?” You ask curiously, brows knitting together.
“It would be best if I told you in private.” He says, guiding you to an alleyway and walking deep enough inside that you won’t be spotted. He takes out the TemPad he was borrowing from Mobius, opening a Timedoor and walking inside.
You were quick to follow behind him, walking through to see the beautiful meadow. This place was beyond beautiful, the wildflowers spanning out over hills and into the forest, clouds becoming pink from the sunset, and the sound of ducks splashing in a nearby pond. You walked over to where Loki was standing, hands tucked into his front pockets of his pants as he looked up at the sky. You both stood there for a few seconds, watching the clouds move as the sky grew darker.
“When Mobius was pruned something happened.” Loki starts, not looking at you.
“Like what?” You ask.
There was a beat of silence before he spoke, “Have you ever considered the possibility of having powers?” He asks, seeming to change the subject, you look at him with a raised brow but still thinking it over.
“I mean, I’ve thought about it. Like a ‘what-if’ scenario, you know?” You reply with a nod, “Like ‘oh what if I had powers? That would be cool’ kinda thing.”
Loki nods, “I see.”
You furrowed your brows, “What does this even have to do with Mobius being pruned?"
He sighs “When I had tried to calm you down after Mobius was pruned something happened to your eyes. They were glowing, like nothing I have ever seen before.” He replies bluntly.
You couldn’t help but burst out into a fit of laughter, “Mhmm, like laser eyes or...?” You joke.
“You really are like Mobius sometimes.” Loki mutters to himself, shaking his head. He gave a frustrated sigh, “I’m trying to say that you may have some kind of power.”
You smiled at him “Okay, okay, I’m sorry. I mean, it’s just, you can’t be serious. Like there’s literally no way that’s possible.” You chuckle, “So is there something you actually wanted to talk about or was that it?” Loki rolled his eyes in annoyance, turning to face you with his hand reaching out for yours “What are you-”
”It’s simple.” River said, his smile wide and his eyes glowing a bright blue. “You just go from one place,” He disappears “To another.” His voice was now behind you. You whirl around seeing him now sitting on the rocking chair on your porch.
“Yeah, seems so simple.” You say sarcastically, crossing your arms.
“Just try it.” River urges, “It’s just like walking from one place to another. You just have to know where you want to go, and focus all of your power on it.” You blinked and he was next to you, the rocking chair now empty. “You don’t have to do anything too crazy. Just take baby steps until you get a hang of it.”
You nod and look down at your feet. For a second it felt like the ground had fallen from beneath you, your ears popped loudly, the ringing in your head was almost deafening and it felt like you were being electrocuted. A warmth spread through every entire body, but your veins filled with ice and you were unable to catch yourself as you fell backwards, your body locking up for a second as the pain continued coursing through you.
You gasped for air when you came out of the memory, your throat felt tight and you felt like someone drenched you in ice cold water. You ripped your wrist out of Loki’s crasp and shoved him away from you, cradling your hand closely to your chest.
“What the fuck is wrong with you Loki?!” You scream, mind still reeling from the memory he had forced you to remember.
“What? You didn’t believe me, so I showed you.” He looked like he genuinely didn’t understand what he did wrong. You shook your head, glaring at him and backed up, grabbing your TemPad from your back pocket. “Oh what? Now you’re mad because I was right?”
“No, you asshole! I would just like it if you at least asked before deciding you want to prod around in my brain like I’m your little fucking experiment! You have no idea what that could have done to me! You’ve enchanted something, what? A grand total of once?! Do you even care how dangerous that could have been?!” You rage, glaring daggers at Loki as his eyes widen just a fraction.
You let out a growl and yanked your TemPad from your back pocket, and opening a Timedoor that would bring you directly to Mobius’ office. Your partner looked up from the file he was reading, his brows knit together when he saw the Timedoor close behind you, your back facing him.
“UGH! He's such an asshole!” You yell, turning around and throwing yourself down on the couch angrily, taking your boots off and throwing them onto the ground so you could cross your legs. You look down at your lap where you held your hand, thumb continuously feeling over the spot Loki had touched.
“Uh oh.” Mobius says “What’d Loki do now?”
You groan, leaning your head back against the couch and slowly running your hands over your face, “What hasn’t he done?” You just stared at the ceiling, “It was all nice and fun, we were walking around New York. And it could have stayed like that, but nooo he just had to barge into my mind just so he could prove a fucking point.” You felt the ghosting pain of the memory surging through you again, just as real, just as clear as it had been when he forced you to remember.
“What point?” Mobius asks, getting up from his desk and coming over to sit next to you.
A humorless laugh came from you leaned back against the couch arm, facing him and tucking your feet beneath his thigh “Oh you’re never gonna believe this one. Apparently I have powers.” Mobius raised his brows, a small smile creeping onto his face “No I know, ridiculous right? Well not so much, because either Loki learned how to project illusions into someone’s mind in three weeks or I’m able to fucking teleport.” You sigh, run your hands through your hair.
“I’m sorry, you’re able to teleport?” Mobius laughs, “Wow… What else are you able to do? Shoot fireballs out of your mouth?” He jokes, you tried to keep a straight face but it was impossible as he stared at you like he always would when he’s trying to get you to laugh.
You shove his shoulder and chuckle softly, your smile slowly slipping away. “It just really bothers me that he didn’t ask first. It felt like he was using me as some kind of guinea pig.” You sigh, resting your head in your hands.
You both stayed quiet for a good bit, your fingers idly playing with the buttons on your dress shirt and Mobius was reading the back of his jet ski magazine but continuing to keep you company. He lowers it to his lap and situates himself so he’s facing you, his foot tucked underneath his other thigh.
You sigh “Well, you wanna go get lunch? You can tell me about how boring your day was.”
“Sure thing, I haven’t eaten today anyway.” He answers, getting up from the couch and waiting for you to put your boots back on.

STORY MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
The smell of cherry pie permeated through your home, the windchimes singing on the porch, and the breeze blowing softly through your kitchen window where a pie sat.
You brushed the pastel yellow curtains aside so you could set down a small mason jar of freshly cut lilacs next to it, planning on using them for soaps. The smell mixed with the pie made you hum softly with a tranquil smile on your face.
“That’s gonna get bugs.” River comments, hopping up on the counter sitting next to the sink.
He had a small smirk on his face when you jokingly glared at him. “Shut up.” You push his knee softly “I’ve always wanted to do this since I was a kid.” River hums his sarcastic ‘mhm’ with a small chuckle.
“Oh, the crows came back.” River changes the subject, digging through his pocket and pulling out a small object “They brought you this.” He places it in your hand and you couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Wow. They’ve really outdone themselves this time huh?” You joke, you turn the object in your hand, inspecting the small blue and green brachiosaurus toy while taking a sip of coffee from your mug, accidentally spilling some onto your shirt. “Oop-” you look down, placing your mug down and pull at your shirt inspecting the damage  “Well there goes Kermit’s face.”
River hands you the dish towel with a chuckle, looking out the window “I’m gonna need you to wake up.” He says pointing at the horizon, the clouds dark just beyond the field.
You looked at him, “What?” you asked, confused.
“I said, you need to wake up.” River’s voice warped, his face fading away.
You felt a hand on your shoulder, gently shaking you. Completely disrupting your dream, it took a second for you to open your eyes, wishing you could have just stayed a little longer.
Mobius was crouched in front of you, his concern evident when he looked at you, but his smile was just as soft as always.
“There you are.” He whispers softly “How you feelin’?” He asked, picking up one of your hands and examining the bandages.
You slowly sat up, back against the cushions of the couch in his office, and crossed your legs. After your visit at the infirmary you had been escorted to Mobius’ office. The events on Lementis left you feeling hollow, and with no more tears to shed the only real option you had was to pass out on Mobius’ couch. But apparently Sylvie poking around in your mind had broken a damn of somesorts, your dreams now flooded with brief memories of your life before the TVA.
“I’m okay. So what happened with Loki and Sylvie?” You ask, fearing for the worst.
“They’re fine.” You let out a relieved sigh “I have Loki in a Time Cell and Ravonna is taking care of Sylvie.”
He got up from where he was crouched in front of you and took a seat on the couch. “Loki said some stuff to me, some stuff that I really don’t want to believe. But when I went to Ravonna’s office she was dodging all the questions I asked. Why wouldn't she let me interrogate Sylvie, when did she notice something was up with hunter C-20. She was acting... defensive.” He shook his head looking at you
“She said that the reason she wouldn’t let me interrogate the variant was because she was trying to protect me. That C-20 lost her mind and that she could barely talk.” He pulled a TemPad from his blazer “Then I distracted her for just long enough to take this.”
You looked at him with wide eyes “That’s Ravonna’s?” you ask, slightly shocked.
Mobius nods saying “I think it has the answers we need.” He opened it, clicking on C-20s profile and waiting for it to load. Her picture showed up, her number below it. Mobius moved closer, your shoulders pressing together as you both looked at the screen.
“Status, deceased.” You whispered “What the hell happened while I was gone?”
“We… We found her in the Roxxcart we went to in Alabama. She was fine when we brought her back, but I didn’t see her after that.” Mobius answers, not looking away from the screen. He clicked the most recent file on her profile, which opened immediately. It was a mission debrief after getting back from Haven Hills. The video came up on the screen showing C-20 sitting at a table.
“You’re not hearing me. I was there. This was real, what I saw. This is a place that I’ve been. This wasn’t the TVA. This was a memory. I lived down there. I went to that bar. I had friends. I had a whole life on the Sacred Timeline.” You nod, knowing exactly how she felt.
Someone says in the background told her to calm down
“Calm down?” She repeats. “I’m a variant. So are you. So is every single person in this place.”
“I’m ending this.” The person speaks again, they walk into frame, looking straight into the camera as the recording comes to an end. Mobius zooms in on her, Ravonna.
Both you and Mobius stare at the screen before he finally closes it, dropping his hands into his lap and looking at the wall across his office. You placed a hand on his forearm, knowing how betrayed he must feel right now. You felt it too.
“It’s true.” You whisper. Mobius looks up at you, hurt in his eyes but not towards you. “Sylvie showed me one of my memories. I was so at peace, and I had a friend, family. The place I lived in was beautiful, right on the edge of a forest with my home facing out to a huge field of wildflowers.” You muse, a smile on your face at the memory, it makes your vision go blurry. “I guess even being kidnapped by the TVA didn’t stop my obsession with botany and caffeine addiction.” You both chuckle sadly.
“Are you sure these weren’t just planted by the variant?” He tries to theorize.
You shook your head immediately “Absolutely not.” You state firmly “When she showed me those memories I could literally feel them, everything, I know it was real.”
“I can’t believe this.” Mobius leans over, his head in his hands “Loki was actually telling me the truth?”
You nod mostly to yourself “I’m honestly kind of surprised he told you.” You say “They’re not that bad though, I mean sure, at first they may have wanted to use me as leverage to overthrow the TVA. But if it weren’t for them I would have probably been crushed by a meteor or a whole building. Oh yeah and I guess the heart to heart I had with Loki over too many drinks probably helped too.” Mobius looked up at you, his eyes wide “Yeah… It’s a long story.”
“You got drunk?” He asked, a smile forming on his lips.
“Oh, don’t act so surprised.” You move yourself to lean against the arm of the couch, throwing your legs into Mobius’ lap.
“No, I’m not.” He puts his hands up “I’m not, I just never thought you’d get drunk with two Lokis of all people.”
You shook your head “It was just the one Loki. Sylvie was taking a nap. But yeah…” You chuckled, trailing off.
“Wait, so how did you get all these cuts? I thought it could have been from fighting Loki.” Mobius asks, picking your hands back up and looking at the white bandages.
“Oh yeah, that was from jumping out a train window, broken glass. You should see the big ass bruise on my back from the landing. Thankfully the nurse gave me some pain meds so I’m fine right now, but I already know that shit is gonna hurt when they wear off.” You flexed your fingers, “We need to get them out of here Mobius. Both of them.”
---
Walking to the Time Theater was much more daunting this time when knowing the truth. The truth of this place being a lie, the people you passed and the halls you walked down, all created on the foundation of a falsehood. You felt sick at the thought, but your anger outweighed that.
Once inside the room, Mobius opened Loki’s Time Cell and you both stepped through.
Vines crept up one wall where two benches sat, eight torches lit around the beautifully crafted balcony that looked over the rest of Asgard. Loki was standing there, facing away from where Sif had been coming in as the memory rewound itself again and again.
“What are you doing?” Your partner asks the second you're both inside.
“Passing the time.” Loki jokes looking at both Mobius, then to you.
“Do you care about this variant?” Mobius walks closer.
“Sylvie? I’m not sure if care is the right word.” He talks quickly “We’ve covered this back in there.”
The trickster is cut off by Mobius “Shut up!” he steps closer “Do you really think you deserve to be alone?” Loki stays quiet, not answering him “Loki!”
“You told me to shut up.” Loki says.
Mobius repeats the question “Do you really believe you deserve to be alone?”
“I don’t know.” The trickster answers.
“Well you better figure it out quick, because the nexus event the three of you caused, I think whatever that connection is, can bring this whole place down. So we better understand-”
“We?” Loki asks, interrupting him.
Mobius took a deep breath, looking at you and then back to Loki and asking “Do you swear she didn’t implant those memories into Hunter C-20 and my partner?”
You couldn’t help but feel a little offended that he wasn’t just going off of your words alone, but you knew it was just his way of double checking, making sure you truly weren’t under the influence of strong magic.
“Mobius, no. I believe her.” Loki looks at you  “Even more so when I saw how your partner here reacted after Sylvie enchanted her mind.”
“So, I just have to trust the word of two Lokis?” Your partner asks.
Loki sighs, looking off towards the sky and the ground before softly saying “How about the word of a friend?”
Mobius nods, continuing to tell Loki that he was right about the TVA from the very beginning and that if he wanted to save Sylvie he needed Loki to trust him. Loki agrees.
“Good.” Mobius pauses before saying “You can be whoever, whatever you wanna be, even someone good.” Loki stares at him, his mouth open slightly “I mean, just in case anyone ever told you different.”
Loki smiles at Mobius, both of them walking through the Time Cell and you following quickly after. They both came to a stop, you almost bumping into Loki’s back you moved to stand between them, understanding why they had stopped so suddenly. Ravonna was standing just a few feet away, with four minutemen surrounding her, and what you assumed to be Mobius’ TimPad in her hand.
“I think you have something of mine.” She states, looking at the three of you, then at only Mobius.
Mobius reaches for his pocket “Yeah, I got all the way down there before I even realized I picked up yours.” He showed her TemPad, handing it to the guard who walked up to him. “What’s going on?” Mobius played dumb “What’s the problem, Ravonna?”
The silence was tense, your hand going to touch Mobius’ forearm anxiously looking for someone to ground you. A pit began to open in your stomach.
“You know where I’d go if I could go anywhere?” He starts “Wherever it is I’m really from. Yeah, wherever I had a life before the TVA came along. Maybe I had a jet ski. That’s what I’d like to do.” The guard in front of you grips his baton, turning it on “Just riding around on my jet ski.”
“Prune him.” Ravonna commands.
“NO!”
The guard thrusts the baton towards Mobius’ stomach.
You feel your world slow down, your fingers hurriedly clutching Mobius’ disappearing arm. Hearing his scream echo in your head, and your mouth going completely dry. Your knees hit the ground before you even noticed you were falling, hands laying flat on the tile as you slouched over in shock, clutching your stomach. Painful sobs left you as you felt like your soul was being ripped from you, your only friend, a man that had been like a father to you, was gone. Sobs wracked your body as you trembled, rage and despair boiling inside of you.
“He was your friend!” You scream, looking up at her from where you knelt, seeing her take a step back before you look down at the tile again “He was your friend, and this is how you repay him?!” Loki placed a hand on your shoulder, urging you to stand “Get your hand off of me.” You growl, head snapping up to look at him.
Loki flinched back, his hand merely hovering over your shoulder “Your eyes…” he whispered.
“Prune her too.” Ravonna says. You didn’t have any time to react before you felt the pruner touch your shoulder. A searing pain traveled through you and ripped a scream out of you as your body disappeared before your own eyes, before finally there was nothing.

STORY MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
You stood slowly, dusting yourself off with a pained hiss. You looked down at your bloody palms, picking away the small shards of glass still stuck in your skin. You could feel the fabric of your shirt and blazer sticking to your bicep, the sleeve torn open and blood soaking through the cloth, your dress pants suffering a similar fate on one leg.
You were lucky the injuries weren’t worse. The possibility of having broken your arm or twisted your ankle was extremely high, but you made it out with only a few bad scrapes and probably what would be a pretty gnarly ache in your back from the landing.
“God this sucks…” You whisper to yourself as pain radiates throughout your body.
With one final look at your injuries you decided to make your way to where Loki and Sylvie had landed. You could hear Loki groan, his hands on his hips and Sylvie shaking out her hair of any dirt.
It was darker outside, whether it was a shadow from the looming planet or if it was becoming nighttime you weren’t entirely sure.
“Well, that’s not ideal.” Loki says, turning around.
Sylvie draws her blade, putting it up to Loki’s throat “Give me the TemPad.” She demands.
“All right all right. Okay.” Loki says, breathing heavily.
You watch carefully, knowing it was for the best not to step in.
Loki moves his hand behind his back and then holds it out, palm facing upwards as the TemPad starts to manifest with a green trail of Loki’s magic. Once fully revealed the TemPad sizzled, smoke coming from the destroyed object laying on his palm. Sparks of electricity come from it’s smashed screen.
You felt your throat tighten, a rock sinking in your stomach ’Oh fuck… We’re doomed.’ Sylvie lowered her weapon, putting it back in it’s sheath, staring at the device
Loki fumbled for an excuse “Well, I did take quite the tumble.” he pointed at the TemPad as evidence of his fall.
“You asshole. You killed us.” Sylvie spits, taking one step closer towards Loki. You walk forward too, standing just a few feet behind Sylvie.
He held it in both hands “Maybe I can fix it. Okay? Um…” not even a second after saying that the TemPad practically crumbled apart in his hands, falling to the ground pathetically. He looks quickly back up at her, and then to you.
“You’re not a serious man.” Sylvie glares.
“You’re right. I’m a god.” Loki says, defending his pride.
“You’re a clown. You got drunk on the train.” Her anger was all too obvious, the peace that had formed between the three of you now gone.
“I’m hedonistic. That’s what I do.” He holds his arms up, not knowing what else she wanted to hear from him.
“I’m hedonistic. A lot more than you, I assure you. But never at the expense of the mission.” Sylvie says.
“Oh, the mission? The mission?” He raised his brows “What, your glorious purpose? Give me a break. You can’t beat them.”
Sylvie didn’t even bother arguing, she turned on her feet walking away from you and Loki. Her hands were balled into fists and she screamed, a ripple of her power making the dirt kick up, it made your feet feel like they were vibrating where you stood.
She sat down on a small dirt pile, heaving a sigh and looking out at the rest of the planet. You looked at Loki, also not saying anything before following after Sylvie, sitting down on a different pile to her left, one elbow resting on your knee and your chin resting on your less injured hand.
“Okay.” You heard Loki say quietly from behind you, his footsteps approaching the two of you.
Sylvie sighs, her shoulders slouching in defeat. Loki stepped over the pile of dirt Sylvie was sitting on, sitting next to her, and not looking at either of you. The silence between the three of you was tense, the inevitability of your deaths beginning to sink in.
Loki looked at Sylvie “Did the, uh, scream help you feel better?” He asks.
When she looked at him you could practically feel the rage radiating off of her. But she stayed silent, merely staring at him until she slowly looked away again.
“Yes, it did.” She says, voice calm and even “You should try it some time.” Loki sighs looking off to the distance where Sylvie was looking.
You stare at the dirt, mind drawing blanks as you try to think of any possible solution “What now?” You ask, voice so close to breaking.
“I don’t know. Your drinking buddy broke the TemPad.” Sylvie replies bitterly, Loki tried to talk but she interrupted him “And that planet is about to crash into us.”
“Well. yes, but…” Loki started, being interrupted once again.
“Yes, but what?” Sylvie looks at him, eyes narrowed.
“Well, the entire moon is destroyed, right?” He asks, looking up at the sky.
“Yeah. And everyone on it is killed.” Sylvie nods.
“Including us.” He finishes, looking at her.
“Yes, including us.” Sylvie parrots, her voice rising in annoyance.
You could practically hear your heart pounding against your chest as they talked, your mind spinning.
“What about the ark?” Loki furrows his brows.
“The ark never leaves because it’s destroyed.” Sylvie shrugs, shaking her head.
Loki tilts his head a little, looking at you then Sylvie “Never had us on it.” He states making Sylvie scoff.
“So what? We hijack the ark and make sure it gets off the moon.” She asks skeptically.
You looked at them shaking your head a little “That probably wouldn’t work.” You say, drawing their attention to you “Since the ark is supposed to be destroyed, if we take control of it and are actually able to successfully leave this place, the TVA will find us immediately. It would create a nexus event.”
“I bet that’s what you want though isn’t it?” Sylvie retorts. Her glare suddenly reminded you why you were here in the first place, “Then you’d finally be able to get rid of us variants. Job well done, huh?” You just stared at her, not wanting to provoke her anymore by speaking.
If you were being honest, a part of you didn’t even want to go back to the TVA. Your time working behind your desk day after day has worn you down into almost nothing. The only person that was driving you forward at this point was Mobius, but even he can’t save you from the perpetual exhaustion your job had gifted you.
While being kidnapped against your will was less than ideal, you still had found yourself somehow enjoying the company of the two variants. You felt like, for the first time, you could breathe. And if you continued to be honest with yourself, you would rather die here rather than behind that desk.
“We don’t have many other options.” Loki says “It’s not that bad of an idea” Loki smiles at you.
“Okay.” Sylvie says, standing up and walking past you.
The walk towards the ark was long, your legs aching and your body begging for a break. You lagged a little behind Sylvie and Loki, wanting to give Sylvie as much room as she needed right now, not wanting to cause any more problems that would end up wasting time. So you just walked silently behind them, listening to them talk to each other.
Loki had made some comments about her magic, asking about it only to be shot down. Loki said how he had told her many things about himself but she had yet to reveal a single thing, and how he just wanted to know if he could trust her.
“Okay fine. You want to know how enchantment works.” She pauses “I have to make physical contact and grab hold of their mind.”
“How?” Loki asks.
She goes on to say it depends on the mind, and how some are easy to overtake someone instantly while others are strong, guarded. It could be tricky. How she’s in control but they’re also there, in order to make a connection she has to make a fantasy from their memories.
“And you call me a magician.” Loki jokes.
“That young soldier from the TVA, her mind was messed up. Everything clouded. I had to pull a memory from hundreds of years prior, before she even fought for them.”
Your ears perked up at that “What?” Loki and you asked at the same time. They both stop walking, Sylvie turning back to look at you “What’d you just say? Before she joined the TVA? That’s not possible.” You almost laughed. This must have been some kind of trick, there was no ‘before she fought for them’.
“Yeah. She was just a regular person on Earth. Just how you probably were.” She says.
“Just a regular person?” Loki asks her. She looked at Loki, tilting her head a little.
“Loved margaritas.“ She shrugged.
Loki furrows his brows “I was told that everyone who works for the TVA was created by the Time-Keepers.”
“We were.” You reply confidently. You furrowed your brows, annoyance rising in you.
“That’s ridiculous. You’re all variants like us.” She looked at you.
“They don’t know that.” Loki said.
There wasn’t even time to let her words fully sink in before an announcement played on a loudspeaker, echoing across the vast emptiness of the moon.
You were just forced to walk in a stunned silence, not even able to think of anything, your mind gone completely blank. This was a trick, a lie told from the mouth of a trickster goddess, trying to weave her way into your head before even laying her hands on you.
The city was packed full of people, it was a loud, writhing mass of uneasy people. Impatiently waiting to be let into the ark. People were chanting, more and more people weaving through the crowd to get as close as possible to the ship.
Loki stood on a box, looking at the crowd that was gathered at the gate.
“They’re gonna let these people die.” He says almost bitterly.
“We have to get on and make sure it takes off.” Sylvie says.
“How?” You ask her.
She grabbed Loki’s hand, pulling him off the box and saying “We go around.” Both you and Loki whispered your okays at the same time.
The three of you begin to run, turning a corner between two buildings, weaving around the frantic people before coming to a sudden stop, looking around for a possible direction. There were fires, and screaming people everywhere you looked, people running past you and fights breaking out before your eyes.
A loud cracking boom echoed throughout the entire city, the planet that was making its descent onto the moon splitting open like a mouth about to swallow you whole. The planet’s rocks broke through the atmosphere of the moon, catching fire as they hurtled towards the surface, crash landing into skyscrapers, and some landing only a few feet from the three of you. You all immediately took off running, knowing it was now or never.
You weren’t able to get very far as one of the large meteors landed right in your path, sending you all flying backwards onto the ground. Sylvie landed on top of you, both of you grunting as your ears rang loudly. You laid there, feeling a hand grab you and haul you to your feet again. Your eyes met Sylvie’s green ones, she gave you a quick nod and you all started running again, this time through a circular opening with bright blue fluorescent lights that led into a neon bar.
“You okay?” Loki asks you.
“Yeah.” You look back at Sylvie as if to pass the question on to her.
“I’m good.” You felt Sylvies hand on your back, trying to keep her balance as her head still pulsed.
You didn’t get far inside before Sylvie was yanked back by her cloak, she was quick to remove it, twisting it around and pulling on it with all her strength, making the guard fall violently to the ground. The other guard didn’t even have a chance, Loki firing his wispy green magic at them, making them collapse.
“Hold it! Stop right there!” Another guard said. Loki delivered a brutal punch in the abdomen, throwing him onto the floor. The last guard was struck down by Sylvie’s blade quickly.
She sheathed her sword “Let’s go.” She said, all of you running back outside, attempting to dodge any debris from the meteors landing near you. Alleyways were collapsing, people screaming in pain and horror, and your heart was stuck in your throat.
“Over here!” Sylvie says, running towards cover, the three of you crouching down for only a second before taking off again through an archway created by the destruction and paused again, looking around frantically for a place to go.
The building you were standing in front of gave a loud groan, buckling in on itself, a large chunk of it falling and making its way right for you. “Run!” Sylvie urged, pulling you out of the way just as the huge satellites hit the ground followed by the rest of however many floors, shaking the ground violently beneath your feet with a deafening boom.
You all turned a corner, “Watch out!” You scream.
“I’ve got it!” Loki shouts, using his power to stop an entire building from crushing you. It was only inches above your heads, making your stomach clench and your heart thud like a jackrabbit’s.
Loki raised it back to its place, while Sylvie ran ahead. “Come on, let's go!” She yells at Loki, who snapped you out of your frozen state by grabbing your wrist and tugging you along.
He let you go to shove a guard out of the way, more coming, some still armed with their batons.
One of them grabbed Sylvie, dragging her backwards, You grabbed them by the shoulder, violently kneeing them in the spine making them let go of Sylvie and collapse on the ground.
“You two, come on!” Loki urges, still fighting off one of the guards.
You all ran forward, just a few feet away from the gates that led to the ark. Only to stop in your tracks as a colossal meteor tore through the vessel with ease.
The crowd behind you cried out, some collapsing to the ground, and others falling completely silent like the three of you had.
You felt your heart completely break in your chest, any last hope you had to leave this godforsaken moon reduced to rubble. A single tear trailed down your dusty cheek slowly at the sight, your mouth going completely dry. Your lungs burned with every breath, but the pain turned out to mean nothing in the end.
Sylvie turned on her feet, walking towards the crowd and away from the gates. You followed after her, your fingernails digging painfully into your injured palms.

You opted out of going back to your apartment, and instead you walked down the long halls to Mobius’ office. The exhaustion of the day was weighing down on you, tugging your eyelids closed and inevitably caused you to fall asleep on the couch he had in his office, the blanket he had only half covering your still fully clothed body, you hadn’t even bothered to take your boots off before collapsing on the cushions. Your fingers twitched around the edge of the blanket, wanting to tug it up higher, but not able to find the strength, sleep enveloping you quickly.
Lately you have found yourself more and more tired, constantly staring at papers for hours and hours with none of the words truly sinking in. The exhaustion had a grip on your throat, slowly squeezing, crushing you more and more.
You were never really the research type of person, always finding the task tedious and no matter how hard you looked, the answers always seemed to breeze right past you. You had no idea why Ravonna saw this as a fitting job for you.
You turned around on your back, the warmth from sleeping in your clothes waking you up. The blanket was on the floor and you briefly wondered how much time had passed. Tired eyes focusing on the patterned ceiling before finally forcing yourself to sit up, boots softly hitting the tiles. You felt a lot better now that you slept. Even if your mouth felt dry and your head kind of hurt from the heat, you didn’t feel tired anymore.
“Ugh, god.” You groaned as you stood, joints popping loudly when you stood up and stretched. You bent down to pick up the fallen blanket, folding it like it had been and draping it back over the couch and smoothing down the creases.
This wasn’t your first time falling asleep in Mobius’ office, in fact you spent a lot of your time on this couch. Whether it was to bother him while he was working or simply because you couldn’t be bothered to go all the way back to your own apartment. Mobius had always welcomed you with open arms, saying that he didn’t mind the company, he never did.
With a sigh and one final look around the room you opened the door and walked outside, wanting to go back home and fix yourself something to eat.
The walk was slow, still trying to wake up from your nap. The wall branched into another hall, one that led towards Ravonna’s office. You stopped walking for a second, staring at the hourglass patterns on the double doors.
”She said you’ll have to stay behind.” Mobius’ words from earlier echoed in your head, the questions you had for Ravonna forcing itself to the front of your mind. You wanted answers
“Hey. Is Ravonna in?” You asked the minutemen standing guard at her office.
The other turned towards you, giving you a short, kind greeting before saying “She should be back- Hey!” He yelled right before you felt someone yank you back by the collar of your blazer, and a boot violently kicked you in the gut. You were sent flying backwards towards the left side of the waiting area into the open space between the wall and couch.
You wheezed for air, your hand placed over your stomach as it pulsed painfully. The fight that transpired between the guards and your attacker was quick. One minuteman was pruned and the other was knocked out with a kick to the face, collapsing on the couch you were thrown next to.
The woman turned back towards you, eyes meeting, she was breathing heavily as she stepped towards you. You had nothing to defend yourself, and your fighting was rusty thanks to the never ending work, never giving you the time to even think about training.
So basically, you were screwed.
Approaching footsteps stopped her in her tracks. The woman stepped back and drew a blade from a scabbard hidden by her long cloak, preparing herself for another fight.
“A few questions.” A familiar voice said.
’Loki?’ You thought to yourself, yet not entirely surprised. He was a variant and the god of mischief, the inevitability that he was planning to betray you all was high and everyone knew it.
“Have you got nothing else to do?” The woman asks.
“Rude.” He said, they circled each other, weapons drawn. The woman’s eyes flicked from Loki to you, keeping an eye on you just in case you decided to make a run for it. Loki didn’t look at you, either not noticing you were slumped in the corner or not caring. He pointed one of his blades at her “Are you sure you’re a Loki?”
’Holy shit’ You thought, eyes widening as you looked up at the both of them ’She’s the Loki variant?’
“You’re in my way.” She states.
“You are my way.”
The woman seemed to grow tired of Loki talking, her blade hitting against his with a loud metallic clang. She was a skilled fighter, her moves were quick, practically predicting Loki’s moves and sending him stumbling down the hall.
Loki was out of your line of sight when he started talking again.
“I thought perhaps we could work together.” She kicked him in the chest, forcing a grunt from him before he sighed loudly, panting “But now I see you lack vision.” The other Loki groans, turning around back towards the doors to Ravonna’s office “So either you’ll come willingly-” He placed a hand on her shoulder, earning a sword being lunged towards him in return which he dodged, twisting the woman’s arm behind her back and forcing her to bend forward “Or you won’t. Either way, that’s how I get to the Time-Keepers.”
You slowly picked yourself up, the searing pain in your gut finally starting to go away. Their backs were turned and you could run.
“Oh, god. shut up!” She screamed, using her strength to throw herself backwards and flip over Loki’s body. Her head whipped up to look at you, boot kicking Loki violently backwards towards the couch when they both stood. She grabbed your wrist just as someone else rounded the corner.
“Hey!” Ravonna yelled. The woman holding your wrist whirled you around, pressing her blade against your throat. Ravonna had two minutemen behind her, all three sporting batons.
“Come any closer and I’ll kill her.” The woman behind you threatened, holding you tight against her chest, making sure you couldn’t try and escape this time.
Ravonna’s face kept it’s neutral expression, not showing any fear “I wouldn’t do that.” She said, fingers tightening around the baton.
You hadn’t even noticed Loki was up until his hand grabbed the TemPad in the woman’s cloak and pressed it, opening a timedoor beneath the three of you.
---
Thankfully wherever you landed was somewhat soft, you lay there watching the timedoor disappear. Dread closing its claws tight around your heart, fearful of what would come of you while here with two dangerous variants and nothing to defend yourself.
’Oh god Mobius…’ You thought fearfully, was he okay? Did Loki do something to him? You could feel tears welling up in your eyes at the thoughts of what could have possibly come of him.
The second of silence was shattered by a grunt, and quick rustling, both Loki’s wrestling for the TemPad. You sat up quickly, moving yourself out of the way just in case they decided to move closer to you.
“Get off my leg!” The woman shouted, being shoved to the side and the other Loki grabbed the device, his victory short lived when his face was slammed into a flimsy table. The blonde Loki stood, TemPad in hand, “Goodbye, variant.”
Miss Minutes' voice echoed through the small room “You’re out of juice.”
“Oh fuck.” You mutter, closing your eyes and running both of your hands through your hair slowly, already beginning to accept your fate.
“It’s not working.” The woman said, her brows drawing together.
Loki stood back up dramatically, and she didn’t give him a second to speak, drawing her blade and going to stab him. But he was quick, vanishing in an emerald glow and materializing behind her, using his strength to practically fling her into two shelves. One shelf fell over, clattering loudly on the floor.
“Right.” Loki sighs, bending down to pick up the TemPad.
“Just give it to me. You don’t even know how to recharge it.” The original Loki variant said, anger very much evident in her tone.
Loki looked at her, hair a mess “Of course I do. You’re not the only tech savvy Loki.” You couldn’t help but roll your eyes, waiting for them to stop their almost childish arguing.
“Don’t ever call me that.” The woman says.
“Tech savvy?”
“No, a Loki.” Both you and Loki looked at her confused.
She went to snatch the TemPad from her counterpart, but he used his power to dematerialize it. The smile he gave her was cocky, his arrogance much more obvious now that he dropped the ‘I want to help you’ façade.
“You’re just fully a magician then?” The woman jokes.
“Fine. For my next trick. I’ll make you disappear.”
You groaned at that, finally standing up “Oh my god, can you two please just shut the-” You were cut off by something blasting through the ceiling and hitting the ground with a loud boom making you let out a yelp in surprise “Fuck!”
“Was that one of your powers?” Loki asked his other self.
“Where did you send us?” She asks, looking at Loki.
You pushed past them to the, heading straight for the flap that led outside on the far end of the storage-type container you were in. Both variants followed quickly after you.
Lamentis - 1, 2077. It wasn’t an apocalypse you studied heavily but you knew it was bad. A planet slowly getting closer to the surface of the moon and destroying everything and everyone. It was a dangerous place to be and if Loki continued to hog the TemPad like a child, you would all die.
The giant rocks crashing into the surface of the ground just feet away from you didn’t give you time to think about your possible demise. You all had the same idea as you started to run, the woman explaining to Loki just how bad your situation was. She pulled him out of the way of a giant rock heading straight for him, the three of you running to take cover under a big wheeled truck.
“By the way, I thought you wanted me dead.” Loki says.
She scanned the area as she said “I don’t know where you put that TemPad but you blow up, it blows up, and then I end up blown up.” She stood up, not giving him time to reply with some witty remark “There!”
“So we’re a team now?” Loki yells over the loud crashes.
She scoffed “Oh, God, no! I’m not teaming up with you, and I’m especially not teaming up with that damned TVA agent you’ve got us stuck with!”
“Me?! You were the one threatening her life! We would have been pruned if it weren’t for me!” Loki pulled you closer to him aggressively, keeping you from getting crushed by a particularly huge piece of rubble “Watch out!”
“Thanks…” You gasp out, staring at the rock for a second before running after them.
You heard him tell the woman to get down as you caught up. Pushing her out of the way of more space rocks hurtling towards the both of them.
“I didn’t need your help!” She yells, glaring at the man who was now running in front of her.
“You’re so weird!” He says back.
Loki struggled to open the door at first but finally got it open, the three of you quickly rushing in, finally able to catch your breath. It was quiet inside, the only sound being your collective panting. You braced your hands on your knees, standing back up and watching as the woman started walking closer to Loki, bringing her hands up to frame around his neck. A green glow came from her hands, bright for a second only to fizzle out.
“What are you doing?”
“What are you doing?” She turns the question back on him.
“You trying to enchant me?” He accuses, still panting “It won’t work.”
She drops her hands and asks “Why? Because you’re a magician?” You chuckle to yourself, she whirls around, pointing at you with a searing glare “You shut up!” You put your hands up in surrender, lips tilting up in a small smile.
“No, because my mind is too strong.” He points to his head then to her.
“Fine!” Her blade was out again. Loki did the same, drawing the daggers he had.
Loki sighs “Look, are we really about to do this here? Again?”
She drops her defensive stance “Well what do you propose instead?”
“How about you stop fighting?” you suggest crossing your arms. She glares at you, but Loki gestures towards you, agreeing.
“Yes. Why not a truce?” She scoffs “Listen, we’re not getting off this rock if we can’t get that TemPad turned back on.”
“Where do you have it hidden?” She grits her teeth, pointing her blade at him.
“In my heart.” Loki places his hand on his chest.
“Well, then, I’ll cut it out.” She threatens.
“Oh my god.” You muttered, rubbing your temples softly while listening to them bicker back and forth.
“Nice, very droll. Lovely.” Loki says sarcastically “Okay, yes, I do have the TemPad, but we’re not gonna get very far if you keep trying to kill me every thirty seconds!”
“Well you’re full of it because you need me to get that thing recharged. That’s the only reason you saved me out there!” She spits.
“That’s not true, actually.” Loki says gesturing towards you, “I could just kill you and have her do it.”
“I’ll kill her before you can even take a step towards me.” She threatens, pointing her weapon towards him again. “In fact, why don’t I just go ahead and take care of her.” She grabs your wrist, yanking you towards her and twisting your arm behind your back, pressing her blade against your throat for the second time.
Loki steps forward, hands out in front of him “Wait!” his eyes widened a little.
“Ohh, what is it? This your girlfriend?” She teases.
“God no, but she could be useful. She’s a TVA agent, we could use her as leverage.” He suggests.
She looks at him for a second “Fine… She can live for now.” She shoved you forward into Loki, his hands steadying you before stepping past you.
Your fingers grazed against your throat, thankfully no blood had been drawn. And for once. you were thankful that Loki stepped in, whether it was for his own selfish reasonings or not.
Silence enveloped the small mining shack, the woman staring at the wall before finally looking back at Loki “The plan you interrupted was years in the making. Years!”
“Okay, got it.”
“And as soon as I turn that TemPad back on, I’m going straight back to the TVA and finishing what I started.” She sounded so angry, hatred laced in every word she spoke about the TVA.
“Good.” Loki nods, hands on his hips while looking from her to the floor briefly.
“I’ll kill you then.” She concludes.
“Or I’ll kill you.” Loki argues. She scoffed, turning and walking towards the door.
Loki’s hands drop from his hips “Where are you going?” he asks.
“There’s power somewhere on this moon. We just need enough of it to travel through inter-dimensional time and space.” The shack rattled, dust falling from the ceiling onto the floor “Jeez.” she muttered, walking out the door.

Authors note: Think I’m going to be getting rid of the upload schedule because it’s been really hard for me to keep up with recently. So instead I'll be posting when I personally feel like it.
But don’t worry! I’ll still finish this story. Just please be patient with me, I’ve been feeling a little mentally icky recently, and I’ve been insanely focused on preparing my island for the animal crossing update that I keep forgetting to write KDJHFKJ
STORY MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
As you slowly woke up, you could hear the gentle turning of pages, Mobius leaning back in his squeaky chair. You cuddled the blanket closer to your shoulder, trying to ignore the increasing pain of your unmistakeable hangover. Slowly you opened your eyes, looking over to see Mobius sitting behind his desk facing towards you, a magazine in his hands. He looked up from the pages and smiled softly.
“Look who’s finally awake.” He said, voice unusually loud to your ears. You couldn’t help but let out a strangled groan. Your left hand came up to your ear to shield it from any other sound, while the other pressed a little harder into the pillow under your head.
“Ugh, just give me, like, five minutes.” You mumbled into the pillow, clenching your eyes shut as your head gave a particularly painful throb. ‘At least the lights are dim.’ you thought to yourself.
You heard Mobius’ muffled apology through your hand, he slowly got up from his desk chair and carefully walked over to you, his shoes quiet against the tile floor. He nudged your shoulder making you crack one eye open and look at him. He had a glass bottle of water in his hand, holding it out to you with a gentle smile.
“I snagged this from the cafeteria after I found you in here” He says just above a whisper, setting it down on the floor in front of you “I’ll be here if you need anything.” He smooths the blanket over your shoulder down gently, walking back over to his desk and sitting down.
The blanket slipped from your shoulder as you slowly sat up on the couch, but you were quick to pick it up and slide it behind your back and over your shoulders, hugging it close as you reached down to pick up the bottle of water.
Your fingers swiped through the condensation, unfortunately still remembering all the things you had said to Loki. Even though you had been right to be so angry, you still felt bad. Whether it was the way his face shifted with the way you spoke to him, or if it was just your own personal guilt for being so rude, you weren’t entirely sure.
“So do you want to talk about what happened last night?” Mobius asks, closing his magazine and pushing it to the side.
“Not really…” You reply quietly, thumbing at the cap on the water bottle idly “Just a lot of remembering.” Mobius stayed quiet, giving you enough room to speak your mind “I do think I realized something though.” You say, sadness squeezing at your throat “I think I want to leave the TVA. It's just… I hate being here so much, but I would feel so bad leaving you behind to deal with everything alone.”
“I don’t blame you for wanting to leave.” Mobius says with a small smile “And you don’t have to feel bad about leaving, if it makes you happier to be out of this place I say go for it. You deserve to live your life how you want, don’t hold yourself back because of me.”
You nod slowly, grateful that he was able to understand “I’d still visit though. You can’t get rid of me that easily.” You smile softly after hearing Mobius chuckle.
“I wouldn’t dream of it.” He replies.
---
After having a long conversation with Mobius you decided it was time to go back to your apartment. Mobius offered to give you back the bottle of wine you brought to his office, but you told him to keep it, and walked out the door. You pat your pockets not feeling your TemPad tucked inside of any of them.
“Shit.” You whispered to yourself, realizing that it must have dropped out of your pocket when you were trashing your office.
You dreaded having to look at the damage you had done a lot more than having to see the office itself. Knowing that the destruction would only serve as a reminder of how utterly lost you felt in the moment, not knowing what to do with the life you have, wishing you could just go back to how your life once was.
You stop in front of your office, taking a deep breath before reaching out for the door handle and turning it, a lump forming in your throat as you keep your eyes trained on the ground. The door closes behind you before you cave in and turn the light on, the dim lamps on the ceiling lighting up the room and leaving you to furrow your brows in confusion.
The office space was completely cleaned up, the only remaining signs of your tornado of destruction being the gutted chair and the missing shelves on the bookcase. All of the files were picked up and stacked on your desk, one loose piece of paper being weighed down by your TemPad that laid in the middle of your desk. You look around the room in slight shock, noticing the shards of glass had been swept up, and all of your mission trophies had been placed back on the bookshelf, a lot of them put into the wrong places which erased the possibility of Mobius doing this.
You looked back at the piece of paper and slowly walked over to your desk and picked up your TemPad so you could read what was written.
‘Meet me at the location set on your TemPad when you find this, Loki.’
It was hard to suppress the groan, crumpling up the piece of paper and throwing it into the trashcan next to your desk. ‘He really does not know how to take a hint, does he?’ you thought, looking down at the TemPad in your hand, the set location was a place you vaguely recognize in Norway.
A sigh pushed through your lips, fingers brushing against the edges as you contemplated the possible outcomes of whatever he had planned. Your mind immediately went back to what he had done last time you were both outside of the TVA together. While you wanted to have more faith, and believe he would be smart enough not to do that again, he was still Loki.
You turned around to look at your office, realizing that it really hadn’t been Mobius who cleaned it for you, and possibly Loki. In a way it did bring you the littlest hint of comfort, such a simple display making you wonder if this was his way of apologizing for the pain he had caused you.
The timedoor opened in front of you when you pressed the button on your TemPad, the curiosity driving you forward. You walk through the translucent orange door and out onto a stone path, the door closing behind you. The path leads to a small stone staircase now covered in moss where you see Loki standing with his hands behind his back, staring out at the vast ocean just beyond the crumpled down wall he was standing behind.
You make your way up the path towards him, a small table coming into view just a little ways away from the stairs. The table had two chairs and a signature green tablecloth that was swaying with the little breeze that came in from the ocean.
“What is this place?” You ask, stopping just a few feet behind Loki.
“It’s the remains of a castle I once dined in with Thor many centuries ago. I thought it would be nice to switch things up a bit.” He turned around with a small smile on his lips. “Coffee?” He asks, gesturing towards the table. You watched as two coffee cups manifested onto the table, “It’s from this fantastic shop I found just after Mobius let me leave the TVA. I think you’ll like it.” He ushers you towards the table, taking his seat.
You sat down across from him, reaching out to grab the coffee cup. The cup was warm against your skin as you cradled it close, “Did you just steal the cups and run or something?” You ask looking up at him before taking a sip of the warm liquid. Loki wasn’t wrong, it tasted amazing.
“They’ll be returned eventually. So I believe it’s just called borrowing.” He said, taking a drink from his own cup.
“Riiight.” You say, not able to fight the small smile forming on your lips. You both stayed quiet for a few minutes almost afraid to shatter the fragile atmosphere that had formed around you. “You cleaned my office.” You state, looking down at the coffee in your cup.
“It was filthy.” He said, looking at you over the rim of his cup.
“Yeah that was kind of the point of my breakdown.” You chuckle softly, “It’s not exactly easy finding out that your life has been stolen from you, not just once or twice, but three times, and in the moment you’re just waiting for everything to be taken from you once again, being forced to relive the process of forgetting and remembering over and over again.” Your tone became increasingly bitter as you talked, heat rising on your face as you thumbed the rim of your cup.
“Three times?” He asks curiously, straightening his back a little more in his chair.
“Yeah, turns out I’m adopted.” You nod, taking a particularly loud sip from your drink “And that’s not even the weirdest part, but I won’t bore you with the details.”
Loki didn’t force you to elaborate thankfully. He merely looked at you with squinted eyes and set his cup down, clasping his hands on the table and looking out to the skies where some birds flew overhead. You both sat quietly enjoying your coffee and listening to the crows caw from one of the withered windows.
You leaned back in your seat, crossing your ankles and looking up at the blue sky. The clouds look particularly fluffy, moving slowly across the sky with the wind. You thought back to your conversation that you had with Mobius about leaving the TVA, an idea swelling in your mind. You sat up in your chair, straightening yourself.
“My memory tape…” You whispered quietly to yourself. Loki looked up at you with furrowed brows, asking what you said.
In a way you had been avoiding looking for it ever since the TVA was taken down. You were scared of what you would find, and wanted to take it at your own pace, or like Sylvie said, taking baby steps to remembering. But with the increasing urge to get away from the TVA, you wanted to go back to your home on Earth, you wanted to see River again.
You stood from your chair, Loki following quickly after, furrowing his brows in confusion.
“Where are you going?” He asked, stepping out from in front of his chair to stand beside you.
You fished through your pocket for your TemPad, “Sorry, but I have to go find something.” You say as you open a timedoor back to the TVA, looking back at Loki and giving him a small smile. “Thanks for the coffee.”
“Wait-” You heard Loki say just as you stepped through the timedoor, too late to turn back and hear what he had to say as it closed behind you.
---
The tape vault was packed full of memory tapes of every single person in existence, whether it’s someone as unknown as a father of three, a prominent figure like a king, or president. Their whole lives were documented and placed in this vault, a place that would be literally impossible to walk through if it hadn’t been for TemPads. And luckily since all of the TVA employees' memory tapes had been hidden away by He Who Remains they were now placed in specifically marked areas towards the front of the vault. You applauded the people who went through the effort to find and organize all of these.
“Agents, agents, agents.” You whisper to yourself as your fingers graze the boxes on the shelves, you smile a little wider once you find the boxes, taking one off the shelf and sitting down on the floor with it. “Claire... Ronnie... Abner... Jada…” You whisper as you read the labeled tapes, picking one up after the other and setting it beside your thigh so you could put them back in the box once you were done.
Box after box you went through, you found Mobius’ tape, but you still haven’t found your own. You had gone through a grand total of seven boxes, and there was only one more left, and you already felt the pit forming in your stomach as you picked up the last box, placing it in front of you and slowly lifting the cardboard top.
It only had a few tapes laying inside so you slowly picked them up, reading the labels one by one “Bailey... Kristín… Leo... Gina… Thomas... What the hell.” You mutter as you come up empty. You sat the last tape down in your lap, staring down at it.
It was hard to pinpoint one exact emotion, confusion, sadness, and disappointment all swirling together into a chaotic tornado in your stomach.
“So this is where you ran off to.” A voice spoke next to you making you jump, having been so absorbed in your thoughts that you didn’t notice someone else was here.
Loki stands over you, looking at the boxes you caged yourself in with. “Did you find what you were looking for?” he asks, his dress shoe bumping against one empty box.
You sigh, shoulders slumping, gently placing the tapes back in the box and close it “Not really.” you stand up and dust off your legs and hands “I couldn’t find my memory tape. These boxes are supposed to have the memory tapes of every agent in the TVA, former and current. So why isn’t mine here?” You’re mainly talking to yourself now, voicing your confusion aloud. With a long sigh, you rub your hands against your face “Do you mind helping me put these back on the shelf?”
“Not at all.” He replies quietly, stepping around you carefully, and helping you place the boxes back on the shelf.
Once you were done you took a step back, staring at the blue labels on each box one last time, turning to walk down the aisle towards the door that led out to the time theater. Loki followed after you quietly, letting you close the door behind the both of you. You stop at the table that had the holoprojector sitting in the middle.
“Are you okay?” He asks, stopping a few feet behind you.
“Yeah, just a little disappointed I guess.” That was an understatement, but you didn’t want to make this his problem.
“Maybe it’s just been misplaced. You’ll find it eventually,” He gently places a hand on your bicep “And if you don't, at least you have Sylvie and me to help you.” He winks, making you roll your eyes. You hum sarcastically, smiling softly.
Sure, you’ll admit it felt nice to actually be able to talk to Loki normally again. You didn’t feel as angry as you did yesterday, you guessed coffee really did make you feel a little better. Which reminded you...
“Hey, so, did you want to talk earlier when we were having coffee?” You question, leaning against the table a little.
“I just felt like having coffee.” He shrugs, “Either way, it’s not important right now.”
You squinted at him suspiciously, but decided not to pester him about it. If he wanted to tell you what it was some other time you were sure he would do so.
“Alright… Well, do you wanna go get lunch with me?”
Loki tilts his head a little, nodding softly after thinking over the question “I wouldn’t mind getting something to eat.” He nods.

You woke with a gasp, hand going to your chest where your heart was pounding. The sky above was cloudy, the looks of a storm swirling about. The grass you were laying on brushed against your arm with the gentle breeze, you were quick to sit up, looking around to see demolished buildings off in the distance, a wasteland of destruction and death.
The Void, the place the TVA sends variants when pruned.
You’ve been sent to die by someone you had believed to be a trustworthy colleague.
There was a flash of lightning and a loud crackling roar in the distance, a gigantic cloud-like beast destroying and consuming an entire ship, and making its way right for you.
“Oh fuck.” You whisper, scrambling to your feet quickly and running in the opposite direction.
You could hear the metallic crunch of cars being eaten up, utility poles splintering and snapping under the pressure, and the beast steadily getting closer to you. You saw a cliff just ahead, your heart racing in your chest as you tried with all your might to race to the hill as quickly as you could before you too were consumed by the monster.
There was a ringing in your ears, a warmth spreading through you, the taste of bile rising in your throat, and you closed your eyes hoping you weren’t about to pass out. Suddenly your feet were off the ground, the wind stopped blowing for just a brief second before you hit the ground face first with a grunt.
Every part of your body felt like it was on fire yet numb at the same time, and your eyes felt like they were about to burst from your skull. Your head gave a violent pulse when you opened your eyes, black dots swirling your vision and leaving you feeling sick to your stomach. You could barely move an inch before the darkness took over your vision and you passed out in the grass.
You felt something brush against your side slowly waking you up from your unconscious state, as you become more coherent you flinch, the feeling of lightning rippling painfully through the place they touched. You lifted yourself with shaking arms and backed yourself away from the looming shadows, your back hitting against a rock.
“Who is that?” You heard someone ask.
Someone said your name softly but all you could do was stare at the ground and your bandaged hands, everything feeling and looking so much clearer than before.
They crouched down in front of you, finally making you look up at their face and your vision slowly goes back to normal.
“Are you okay?” He asks.
“Loki?” You whisper, looking up at the two other people standing just a few feet behind him “Who are they?”
He looks back at the older man and child “Ah, these are my friends. Other Lokis. I’m surprised you wouldn’t know.”
“I didn’t really deal with Loki variants that much.” You say softly, looking down at the hissing reptile walking closer to you “Who’s the alligator?” You raise your brow while looking at the scaly beast who sported gold horns on his head. “Wait a second, is the alligator a Loki too?” It only growls in response “Wow… Well, you’re very adorable.” You say to him, groaning when your head gives another painful throb.
He stands up and puts a hand out for you to grab, which you do. You’re hauled to your feet quickly regaining balance on your wobbly legs. You dust yourself off, finally taking in the area around you and walking to the edge of the cliff, looking down at the grassy field of destroyed automobiles and foundations where buildings once stood.
“Car.” The child said.
“What?” You ask looking over your shoulder at him, going to stand next to the Loki you were most familiar with.
“Along the horizon.” The older one replies.
“Is that bad?” The Loki next to you asks. All of you watched the headlights break through the light fog, driving right towards you on the overgrown path.
“Well, it usually means cannibalistic marauders or cannibalistic pirates.” The child says.
“Delightful.” Loki says, watching as the car approaches “Now they’re slowing down.”
The car parked just outside the eroded white fence. “What are they doing?” The older Loki asks.
“Just stay on guard.” The child said.
The back door opens and someone steps out, slamming it shut again. They looked like-
“Sylvie.” Is all Loki says, running out into the field.
You were quick to follow, the headlights to the car blinding you for a second and almost making you bump into Loki’s back when he stopped suddenly in front of the woman. You place your hand on his back to steady yourself and step to the side, seeing someone else walk in front of the headlights, their face being obstructed briefly before they walk into view.
“Mobius…” You whisper, quickly running over to him, your arms wrapped in a suffocating grip around his neck. You could feel his chuckle vibrate through you and his arms secursing themselves around your middle, hugging you just as tight. You felt the tears flow before you could stop them, the relief crashing down on you knowing that he wasn’t consumed by the void.
All you could hear was Mobius’ saying “Don’t worry, I got you.” softly against your head. You leaned back and looked at him, hands bracing on his shoulder “You didn’t have to go and get yourself pruned just so you could see little ol’ Mobius, you know.” He joked.
You pushed his shoulder with a tearful laugh “Shut up. Asshole.” You look back at Sylvie who gave you a short nod and look back at Loki, seeing the two figures and an alligator approaching from behind him.
Sylvie goes to draw her sword only to be stopped.
“Oh, no, wait, wait, wait, these are my friends.” Loki gestures towards the others “Uh, well, they’re, um… How best to put this? Uh, us as a child,” He points towards kid Loki “Us in the future.” He points at the older one “And us as, uh, an alligator.” He points towards the reptile in the grass. Sylvie looks at him with her brows raised “It’s best not to question it.” Loki nods, dropping his arm to his side.
“You throw a rock out here, you hit a Loki.” Mobius jokes and Loki nods, placing his hands on his hips.
“So you’re all after the giant cloud monster, too, then?” Sylvie asks, looking back out at the sky where the monster resides.
“What?” You ask looking around the group of Lokis.
“Well, we haven’t decided how we’re going to kill it, but-”
“Sorry, come again? Kill it?” Sylvie interrupted Loki.
“Yes, we’re going to kill Alioth.” He replies confidently.
“Oh, my God. That was your plan.” She looks at you “Did you know about this?”
You shook your head “Nope, they found me not long before you guys showed up.”
“Yes, that's the plan.” Loki replies to her question.
“And you all went along with it?” She ignores him, asking the other Lokis.
The three of them all denied saying they had their doubts and were just going along with it.
You couldn’t help but chuckle, “They really are Lokis.”
“Yes, I can’t help but be ashamed.” Sylvie sighs, shaking her head.
“All right, we, well, what’s your plan, then?” Loki asks.
Sylvie sighs “I think the person we’re after is beyond The Void at the end of time.” She tilts her head to the side a little. “And if they are, that thing is just their guard dog protecting the only way in.” She simply says, shrugging.
Loki looks down at the ground, his hands on his own hips “Okay, so, um, how do we get past the guard dog?” He asks.
Sylvie smiles while saying “I’m gonna enchant it.” Loki raises his brows and laughs, Sylvie looks to the side and drops her hands from her hips.
“I mean that’s insane, right?” He asks with a wide smile.
“As insane as what? Paper-cutting a giant cloud to death?” She defends.
You shrug, nodding “She has a point.” Loki looks at you briefly with a small glare making you chuckle.
“Listen. I’ve been down here a lot longer than you-” He tries to say, only to be cut off.
“I’m going to enchant it.”
Loki tilts his head, mouth hanging open slightly and looking at both you and Mobius for any help to defend his case.
Mobius just nods his head and says “She’s pretty confident.”
Sylvie and you just nod, watching Loki place his hands back on his hips in shock. You burst out into a fit of laughter at the look on his face, never have you seen him look so offended.
The child suggested you all find a place to sit and think things over, and maybe eat. Everyone seemed to agree. The older Loki led the way, saying that they knew where you could all rest for the time being, leaving the car behind.
Once you all stopped at what was left of the destroyed building, you helped Mobius and the older Loki gather wood, and the child lit it with his dagger. You sat on the ground between the older Loki and the child, feeling the alligator nudge against your arm and slip into your lap.
“He seems to like you.” The older Loki comments. You stroked your fingers along the reptiles’ scales hearing an almost purr-like sound come from him.
Mobius shakes his head, looking down at you and the Loki in your lap “I still can’t get over that.”
“You really don’t remember him?” The older Loki asks.
Your partner shakes his head “I mean, the TVA arrested a lot of Lokis, but, no, I don’t remember an alligator. I mean, who’s to say he even is a Loki variant?”
The older Loki shrugs, leaning over his chair a little to look at the alligator “He is green, isn’t he?” He looks at you and you nod. He is in fact green.
“I don’t know, he could be lying. The long con. Of course, that just makes him more likely to be a Loki.” He looks at the Loki sitting next to you “It’s always the game within the game with you guys, which I respect.”
You chuckle, gently picking up the alligator in your lap and placing him on the ground next to you. “I’m going to see what those two out there are doing.” You say, dusting the back of your pants off and walking outside.
The sky was still dark, not a hint of blue through the thick grey clouds. It was a dreary place where the TVA dumped people, and for what? The Sacred Timeline? It didn’t seem like a good enough excuse anymore.
You saw both Sylvie and Loki sitting together, a green material draped over both of their shoulders, no doubt thanks to Loki’s magic.
“It looks like you guys are wearing a tablecloth.” You said sitting down next to Loki.
“That’s what I told him. But, he insists it’s a blanket.”
You chuckle softly feeling something brush against your shoulder as Loki makes the blanket longer so it can reach you too. “Oh well now this is just impractical, there’s nothing even covering you anymore.” You say leaning closer to press your side against his.
“Well, I was just trying to be nice. I can get rid of it if you like.” Loki replies with faux seriousness.
“No, no, I’m good.” You say looking at Sylvie who was smiling too, watching it drop slowly as silence fell over the three of you comfortably for the first time.
The three of you look out to the horizon where lighting flashes in the clouds, a storm approaching.
You tried not to think about whatever could be going on in the TVA right now, whatever Ravonna may have been up to. It scared you, how easy it was for her to just get rid of Mobius and you.
Finally Sylvie broke the silence “How do I know that, in the final moments, you both won’t betray me?”
Loki looks at her, “Listen, Sylvie, I…” He pauses, taking a deep breath, and trying to find the right words “I betrayed everyone who ever loved me. I betrayed my father, my brother... “ He looks down “My home. I know what I did. And I know why I did it. And that’s not who I am anymore.” He looks at you too, seeing you slowly nod in understanding then back to Sylvie “Okay? I won’t let you down, either one of you.”
“You sure?” She asks, he nods “‘Cause if we make it, and the TVA is gone, there might be a timeline for you to rule.”
“Ah. And then I’d finally be happy.” They both smile at each other, and Sylvie smiles.
You lean your head on your propped up knees, “I don’t think I could find it in myself to betray either of you.” You say, looking back out at the sky “During my time at the TVA, the only friend I ever really had was Mobius. I was happy for a time, until my accident.” You pause, taking a deep breath.
“I didn’t realize until Lamentis that the yearning feeling I had wasn’t to get back to work, it was to leave altogether. The only person who really kept me grounded in that place was Mobius. And in that short time I felt… free. Even if it might have been against my will at first.” You chuckle, looking at Sylvie “I tried to put myself into your shoes only for you to help me realize that I was already in them, not entirely, but similarly. So even though you wanted me dead or still do, I understand why. Nobody deserves to be robbed of their life for some so-called ‘greater good’, it’s bullshit.”
She merely nodded, not replying but her eyes had grown soft. Silence fell over you all again for a short while, the wind still blowing steadily across the field
Loki looks at Sylvie “What will you do once this is all over?”
She pushes a strand of hair out over her face, wetting her lips, and finally looking at Loki saying “I don’t know.”
Loki nods “I don’t know either.” They look at you, seeing you shake your head, “Maybe… Maybe we could figure it out…” He trails off.
“Together.” You say, looking at them.
“Maybe.” Sylvie sighs, a smile slowly rising on both of their faces.

Your body felt cold, the fear running like ice through your veins. You were sitting on the ground in front of Sylvie with your knees cradled to your chest, your eyes staring forward at the rock she sat on. You couldn’t even bring yourself to cry, your body feeling numb from the shock.
Footsteps approached from your right, slowly taking steps closer before stopping just behind the rock beside Sylvie, Loki walked around and took a seat on it. Silence hung over you all before he apologized. You looked up at him from where you sat, seeing Sylvie nods, not replying.
“I remember Asgard.” She says “Not much, but I remember. My home, my people, my life.” She pauses, sniffling “The universe wants to break free. So it manifests chaos. Like me being born the Goddess of Mischief. And as soon as that created a big enough detour from the Sacred Timeline, the TVA showed up, erased my reality, and took me prisoner. I was just a child”
She let out a shaky breath, “I escaped. Stole a TemPad and I ran for a long, long time, which really sucked. Everywhere and every-when I went, it caused a nexus event. Sent up a smoke flare. Because I'm not supposed to exist. Until, eventually, I figured out where to hide. And so that’s where I grew up, the ends of a thousand worlds. Now...” Sylvie says, her voice straining a little “That’s where I’ll die.”
You looked at her, finally actually seeing her. She wasn’t some horrible variant that needed to be extinguished. But instead she was a little girl torn away from her home and forced into solitude solely because someone believed she shouldn’t exist. She was torn to shreds by the years of running, broken down to only want one thing, revenge.
Silence hung over all of you like a thick, choking cloud.
“Was what you said earlier true?” You ask, your throat hurts, a sickening taste lingering in the back of your throat “About everyone in the TVA being a variant?” Sylvie nods slowly, your eyes become glossy,. “Can you show me?” your breath shudders.
She looks at Loki, who gives her a small nod of encouragement.
Sylvie lets out a sigh, reaching her hand out for you to touch. You hesitated, fearing whatever you may see, but second your fingers grazed her palm, her fingers latched around your hand not giving you the chance to back out.
You carefully weaved the stem through itself, the flower crown you were making coming along nicely. The pink petals of the periwinkles were soft and delicate against your fingertips. The wind picked up a little bit, blowing through the field. The grass brushes against each other and the wildflowers sway under the setting sun, the orange hues reflecting in your water bottle that was placed next to herbs from your garden and bundles of flowers from the field you lived on.
“Don’t you ever get tired of making those things?” A voice asks.
River sat next to you, his shoulder bumping against yours before he laid down on the handmade quilt you were sitting on. A parting gift from your mom when you moved out to the cottage that once belonged to your grandmother.
“You’re just jealous you can’t do it right.” You tease, smirking down at the blonde. His golden eyes glared up at you, reaching for the crown you were weaving “Hey! Hands off, asshole.”
He put his hands up in surrender “Sorry, sorry.” He mumbled, a slow smile forming on his lips.
You didn’t have a second to brace before you were tackled backwards on the quilt, nimble fingers dancing across your sides ripping shrieks of laughter from you. You tried to twist out of River’s hold, but he was a lot stronger than you, his own boyish laughter echoing through the wind.
A tiny sob came from you, tears sliding down your cheek. Loki slid down from the rock he was sitting on, crouching next to you and conjuring an emerald colored handkerchief and handing it to you. Sylvie continued to hold your hand even after she was done enchanting your mind.
Your lungs heaved painfully as your entire reality was collapsing in on you. You felt like a hole was being ripped through your very soul, your chest hurt so much. You felt beyond betrayed by the TVA. .
Nobody spoke, wishing to linger in the silence for a while longer. Loki sat back on his rock, just watching you. You could feel Sylvie’s thumb stroke the back of your hand.
The enchantment felt so real, like you were actually reliving the memory itself.
You could only remember bits and pieces of him, some memories felt too far away, muted in the background of the mess that was your mind. But you could remember his kind personality, and his friendship. He was someone who you trusted with your life.
Finally your sobs began to die down,. “Thank you.” You whisper.
“Of course.” Is all she says. Looking out at the sky, more and more meteors plummeted to the surface of the moon. A few minutes passed, you found yourself getting up, sitting next to Loki and looking at the sky. Watching the rocks float around the moon, signaling your impending doom.
“Not long now.” Sylvie says, watching as the meteors violently crash “Do you think what makes a Loki a Loki is the fact that we’re destined to lose?”
“No.” Loki says, Sylvie looks at him “We may lose. Sometimes painfully. But we don’t die. We survive.” He pauses “I mean, you did. You were just a child when the TVA took you, but you nearly took down the organization that claims to govern the order of time. You did it on your own. You ran rings around them. You’re amazing!” He praises her.
You could see tears forming in Sylvie’s eyes as Loki spoke, her hand touching his forearm.
Loki looks at you “I can only imagine the heartbreak you must be suffering right now. You were fed lies, your life stripped from you and erased from your own memory. You’re a victim of the TVA’s cruelty as well.”
You sniffle, feeling his hand grab your own. You looked out at the sky, watching as the biggest meteor crashed the surface of the moon. The crust was broken through, the surface caving in violently as dust picked up, the cloud quickly heading in your direction.
You reached across Loki’s lap to grab Sylvie’s other hand, looking at the both of them. They both smiled at you and at each other, small smiles of three defeated people who could do nothing else but wait.
Right as you opened your mouth to speak two timedoors opened behind the three of you. You all got to your feet, the loud rushing sound in your ears muting any other. TVA Hunters ran through the translucent doors grabbing Loki and Sylvie’s roughly, placing the time collars around their necks. One guard grabbed you too, albeit much gentler than how Loki and Sylvie were being handled.
You were all rushed back through the timedoor which closed behind you.
“Mobius.” You whispered in relief of seeing your friend, rushing into his arms, his arms hugged tight around you.
He pulled back, holding you at arms length, his eyes glossy but his expression relieved “Are you okay?” He asked, noticing the cut on your bicep and then your hands as he grabbed them.
“I’m fine.” You ask, looking back at Loki and Sylvie who were staring at you. Sylvie’s chest heaved with anger, a look of betrayal flashing in her eyes. “Look-”
“We need to put the variants in lockup. Now.” One of the hunters interrupted.
Mobius looked at him for a second before nodding,
Mobius sighed, eyes moving to one of the hunters “Take her to the infirmary so she can get patched up. We’ll deal with the variants.” The hunter nodded and Mobius looked back to you, “When I’m done we can talk in my office. You’re safe now.”
“But wait-” You tried to argue, but he was already turning around and walking down the hall with the other hunters.
You sigh, heart pounding in your chest staring at their backs as they rounded the corner. It was hard to move, your feet glued to the same spot you were left in. The hall fell completely silent aside from your own breathing and the shuffling hunter.
“Let’s go Agent, we don’t want those injuries getting infected.” Hunter G-34 said from behind you, her hand softly touching your shoulder.

Tumblr media
The cafeteria was quiet, the tables were generally empty as you and Mobius were getting a late start on eating. You just opted on getting a sandwich while Mobius got a salad which you eyed him for. Joking how you hoped nobody decided to ruin it this time, which Mobius agreed.
“Kind of wish we could go to an actual restaurant, that would be pretty cool.” You say, picking up one half of your sandwich.
Mobius chuckles softly “Yeah with what money?” He asks while pouring the dressing on his salad.
You roll your eyes and glare halfheartedly at him “Shut up.”
Mobius just shakes his head and smiles, staying silent for a minute before giving you updates on the timeline and how it was doing. Surprisingly enough things had been going smoother than you had thought they would, he also told you about all the confidential files he was able to uncover. A lot of them have to do with the employees and the creation of the TVA, which he still hasn’t gotten around to actually reading.
“How has it been for you since stepping down?” Mobius asked, “Well aside from Loki doing what he did.”
“It’s been nice.” You nod, “Being away from that desk has been really good for me.”
You both finish eating quietly, Mobius reading his magazine and you cleaning up your area and getting ready to go. You couldn’t help but notice how badly your head was hurting, a sigh slipping through your lips as you gently massaged your forehead.
“I think I’m gonna head to my apartment for the day. Check up on things, sit around for a bit, all that fun stuff.” You tell Mobius, patting him on the shoulder and sending him a small smile when he says bye to you.
The Time Door opened to your apartment, not having the energy to walk all the way to the train when you could easily do this. With one last wave to Mobius, you walk through the door and into your room in your bedroom.
It was almost as dull and lifeless as your office, only having small paintings of flowers decorating the grey wall above your dresser, which honestly just looked more depressing than inviting. It felt less like home and served more as a reminder that you never belonged here in the first place.
You set your TemPad on your dresser and walked towards the door, opening it and walking down the hall to the living room, which was surprisingly not empty. Sylvie took up residence on your couch. You could see the TemPad she was given charging on your coffee table as you walked by, making you realize why she was here.
Ever since killing He Who Remains she hasn’t stepped foot inside the TVA headquarters, when realizing this you decided to give her access to your apartment whenever she needed a place to stay, and she hadn’t really taken you up on that offer until now, which you were happy to see.
Sylvie glanced up at you briefly before going back to the book, flipping to the next page, “My TemPad almost died on me so I decided to come by and charge it while you were out.” She said.
“You’re fine.” You wave her off, one hand coming up to cup your forehead.
“So where were you? I thought you weren’t working for the TVA anymore.” She asks, leaning forward to place the book beside her charging TemPad.
You go to the kitchen, groaning at the mere thought of your trip. She closed the book and turned to look at you, watching you pull a glass bottle of water out of the fridge, your body swaying a little as you walked over to the kitchen peninsula that faced out to the living room.
“Yeah, I was planning on spending most of my day walking around New York until Loki decided to ruin it.” She raised her brows, standing up and walking quietly over to the kitchen, sitting right in at the small table in front of the large circular window.
“How many times has he enchanted someone?” You ask her.
“The only time I’ve seen him enchant anything was in The Void. Why? Did he enchant you?” She asks, confirming what you already knew.
You sigh, going over to the dining table and sitting down across from her, “Yup, he enchanted me.” you reply, placing your head in your hands with a sigh “Not only that but the memory he forced me to remember is really fucking with my head.”
“What did he do?”
“Oh nothing too big, just  made me remember that I apparently have teleportation powers that hurt like hell, and that the guy in almost all of my dreams and memories has the same exact powers.” You take a swig of your water “And to top it all off I had a killer headache.”
She sits there for a second thinking “With the memory I helped you remember, it was like a little baby step into your old life, it wasn’t life changing or anything like that, just a simple easy to process memory. But with what Loki did it ruined that process and is making your brain work so much harder to fill the gaps. Enchantment is something you have to be careful with, because one wrong move and you can end up with something like this.”
You sigh, leaning your head on the table “What can I do to fix it then?”
“If you sleep with your mind working the way it is right now, you might go into a coma while being forced to relive every single moment in your life from birth up until that point.” She crosses her arms over her chest and leans back into her chair. You whip your head up to look at her with wide eyes.
“That’s a joke right?” She shakes her head “Fuck… Okay uh, I know that the past few weeks have been really rough for you. And I don’t want to make you do something you don’t want to-”
“I don’t mind helping you out.” Sylvie cuts your rambling short “I’m fine. It’s just been strange adjusting to all of this. You’ve been kind to me when you haven’t had to, and I don’t exactly want to watch you be reduced to a vegitative state.” She gives you a hint of a smile, looking out the circular window that faced out to the rest of the city. “Plus I could use some fresh air.”
Sylvie stands from her chair and asks where your TemPad is “Dresser, in my room.” You answer, still resting your head on your arms, almost feeling hungover.
She comes back and stands next to you gently nudging you to stand up. She caught you when you swayed a little towards her, feeling lightheaded even after sitting for such a short amount of time. You grumble gibberish when she asks if you have any specific destination you’d want to go. A time door opens shortly after, and she pulls you through.
The sound of sloshing waves is amplified thanks to your pounding head, the sunset gentle on your eyes when you looked up and saw you were on an empty beach. The water was beautiful and the clouds in the sky were fluffy and blocking the blinding sun from shining in your eyes, glowing a pretty orange. You were in awe of the place she picked, palm trees separating the thick forest from the beach itself.
“You think this place will be good enough?” She asks, wanting your input.
“Yeah.” You nod.
Sylvie nods too, “Good, here stand back.” She says, a green blanket slowly appearing in his hands, it’s big enough for the both of you to sit on. “I’ve been practicing.”
Sylvie gave you enough time to mentally prepare yourself for what you were probably about to see. You just wanted the headache to go away, and you didn’t exactly desire going into a coma because of Loki’s negligence.
The female trickster waits for your okay, and when you give it to her she scoots closer, holding her hands out palms up, allowing you to be the one to initiate touch. You reach your hands out seconds later, your skin touching and…
The cabin was quiet except for the butterfly windchimes outside, and the kitchen sink running as you rinse your favorite mug out getting it ready for the morning. You had stayed up a lot later than you intended, getting too caught up in a movie, and by the time it went off it was almost three AM. You knew the morning would be pretty rough, and you were already mentally preparing yourself for the exhaustion of only four hours of sleep. But the tomatoes weren’t going to plant themselves and you knew River would probably end up sleeping in thanks to the few extra drinks he had.
You dried the mug and sat it down next to the coffee maker, padding softly towards the hallway that led to your room. You pushed aside the beaded curtain that separated the hallway and the living room, and walked past River’s room.
“No…” You heard, making you stop in your tracks “Please... leave them…” There was the sound of blankets being thrown around and something knocking against the wall. You walked carefully over to the door, not a stranger to River’s nightmares. There was a choked sob that came from inside, which finally made you crack the door open and peek inside just in case you had to wake him up.
River was laying on his back, the sheets thrown to the floor in a heap, and his fists clenched at his side. You were able to see tears streaming down his cheeks because of the light streaming in from the hallway, his cheeks were blotched red, and his chest was rising and falling rapidly. Finally after a few seconds he seemed to start relaxing, his hands laying flat against his bed and his breathing shallowing.
Right as you were about to close the door he shot up with a sharp gasp. His hand coming to his chest and his eyes opening, his eyes igniting into a bright blue that rushed into the surrounding veins of his eye sockets, illuminating his face with a soft light. You stared at him in shock, unsure of how to react.
Before you could even think about saying anything his glowing eyes looked right at you, widening in fear as he saw his reflection in the mirror right next to his door, knowing that his secret was finally out. When you blinked he was gone, his bed empty and the room completely silent save for your own breathing, and racing mind as you tried to piece together what just happened.
You felt yourself slump forward a bit, feeling Sylvie catch you by the shoulder before you landed face first on the blanket. The world felt like it was spinning, the memory bringing only momentary relief from the throbbing pain.
“You’re alright.” Sylvie whispers quietly “Let’s lay you down okay?” She asks, you attempt to nod but can only do as she said and start to lean back, stretching your legs out in front of you and staring up at the darkening sky. “I’m gonna keep going, just tell me when you’re ready, okay?”
“I’m ready,’ You breathe, reaching out for her hand.
It had been almost two days since River’s sudden disappearance. You hadn’t seen a sign of him anywhere, not even a glimpse of him far off in the fields. The cabin felt so empty without him. Not even gardening could get your mind off of the sudden loneliness you felt without him constantly pestering or teasing you. He was your best friend, a brother you never had, and sure the glowing eyes were a little unexpected, and however he left the room so suddenly, but that didn’t change who he was as a person.
You hang your head and stab your trowel into the soil beside your thigh, you pat the dirt off of your hands and knees, and go to walk back into the house. A sigh falls from your lips when you feel the cool breeze of the air conditioning inside, having been out in the sun for a few hours now with little to no actual progress. You wipe your forehead with the back of your hand, walking past the living room and into the kitchen where your water bottle was sitting on the counter.
“I don’t understand how you can just drink room temperature water.” You heard a voice say from behind you. You yelp, spinning around with your hand on your heart. River was sitting on the couch arm facing you, a small smile on his face and his head tilted to the side, his blonde hair falling over his shoulder.
“God, give me a fucking heart attack why don’t you.” You breathe, feeling your heart pound against your chest.
“Sorry…” He says softly, his smile slowly falling from his features.
You sit your water back down on the counter, walking over to him and looking him over for any injuries “Where have you been? You’re a mess.” You say, removing a yellowing leaf from his hair.
“I was doing a lot of thinking in the woods.” He answers “I was trying to figure out the right way I could explain what exactly happened, and what you saw.”
“Yeah, that’d be nice.” You say, smiling softly, “I’ll let you go shower and change first though.”
“You trying to say I stink?” He jokes, pushing himself off the couch and walking to his room.
You hum, nodding your head “Oh yeah dude, you smell like lake water.”
---
After River got out of the shower you made lunch, noticing that the clouds were suddenly darker outside and you could hear thunder far in the distance. You went outside and packed up your gardening tools and set them safely on the porch. When you came back inside River was already sitting comfortably on the couch, flipping through the TV channels, with a blanket draped over his lap.
“I feel like MTV doesn’t play anything but Ridiculousness.” River muses as you close the front door. “Ooh but Catfish is coming on at six, isn’t that amazing.” He says sarcastically. He finally picks something to watch, a horror movie you didn’t catch the name of but looked vaguely recognizable.
You take a seat on the couch, propping your feet up on the ottoman and taking the other blanket from the back of the couch and placing it over your own legs. The both of you just sat there comfortably, watching the movie together like you normally would any other night. You were allowing him to go at his own pace, letting him tell you about what happened to him when he feels ready. It would feel wrong to do otherwise, he was your only friend, the person you trusted most in the world, and you could want him to give you the same courtesy.
After a few hours you and River made dinner together and listened to the rain fall steadily outside. A soft patter on the living room window where you were once again sat, your legs crossed underneath you. You were facing River, scrolling through your phone when finally he spoke
“Alright I guess it’s probably time I tell you.” He sighs, maneuvering himself so he’s facing you, his legs crossed underneath him.
“I know that a lot of the stuff I’m about to tell you is going to sound completely unbelievable, but just… keep an open mind okay?” You agree, staying quiet and letting him continue “So, I grew up somewhere a lot different from here. A place that was so beautifully green your mind wouldn’t even be able to comprehend it. It was a planet called O’Lea, it had castles, floating isles, and prospering people that lived peaceful lives.
I was a part of a royal family, connected to the king who was my uncle, he was a kind man that cared for our people and strived to keep us and surrounding populations happy.” He looked down at his hands “The day I met you was also the day my people were brought to almost total extinction. A horrifying war broke out because of the greed of another king from a different planet. He sought out to kill my uncle and gain the fear and respect from neighboring planets.” River swallowed harshly. “If it weren’t for this I probably would have been hunted down and slaughtered like the rest of my people.”
He reached up to tug a necklace from his shirt, a beautiful blue teardrop crystal hanging from a silver chain. When you got a little closer to examine it, you could see a little blue and purple galaxy of stars twinkling moving around inside of it.
“Wait a second…” You said, continuing to examine the jewelry closer “This looks just like the necklace my mom gave to me when I was a kid.”
“Yeah, about that.” River chuckles before sighing, “I was hoping to tell you this differently so I was putting it off for a while. But now I really need you to listen, I would never lie to you, especially about this.” You just stare at him, anxiously waiting for him to continue his story “Twenty years before the war, the queen gave birth to an heir. A little girl that the king proudly claimed to be the future of their kingdom, the ruler who would take his place when he died. But not long after the heir was born, the king began receiving threats against his life, and the lives of his people. Not long after the king came to a decision that nearly tore my family apart.” River paused for a second, as if preparing himself to speak
“He decided the little princess would be safer far away from our planet, and even safer in a completely different universe. He had taken her to earth and placed her in the care of a kind family of farmers that he trusted, leaving a necklace much like this one in the care of the princess’ foster mother.” He looked up at you, “Your mother.”
You stared at River in slight shock. Torn between wanting to laugh out of the sheer ridiculousness of his story or believing every single word he said. There was a lump in your throat making it hard to swallow any of the information he had given you. Your eyes unfocused a little and you just stared at the necklace hanging from his neck now, an exact replica of the one you had hidden away in your room somewhere.
“You didn’t just somehow find that, and decide you wanted to pull some elaborate joke out of your ass, right?” You ask, an unknown emotion taking over you.
“I promise that everything I just told you is one hundred percent true. You can go look for your necklace yourself if you want.” He offered.
So with that you got up from the couch, heading to your room and opening the bottom drawer of your dresser, digging through the old pajamas, and finding a wooden box that had your old jewelry hidden inside. You slowly opened it, being greeted by the glittering stars inside your crystal necklace, the same ones you remember staring at every night before drifting to sleep.
You walk back into the living room, still staring down at the necklace in your hand before plopping back down in the same spot on the couch.
“How is this possible?” You ask, looking up at River.
“The necklace I’m wearing used to belong to the queen, your mother. She gave it to me just before the king went out to fight with our people, it was like she knew her fate was already written.” He sighed sadly, running a hand through his long hair. “I was helping guard the castle, trying to keep the people inside safe, but we weren’t strong enough to hold our attackers back. The necklace in your hand, the magic that was placed over it was like a beacon that led straight to you through this one.” He held up the one around his neck, “And if it wasn’t for that I’d probably be dead.”
“So that’s why you had all of those injuries when you showed up on my front porch that night.” You say “I thought you were attacked by an animal or something.”
“I mean it’s not that far off. Think of Kathros’ people as humanoid bears with wings and warped human faces.” River chuckles.
“So what about the glowing eyes thing? What’s that all about?” You ask him.
“Right, I was about to get to that.” He nods “Another thing you need to know about our people is we have a type of special power. One that isn’t harmful to others but useful to us in the long run.” He takes a deep breath, looking at you.
You notice his begin to change from gold to blue, they get brighter, the glow slowly lighting up the veins around his eyes, his eyes glow a beautiful sapphire, almost sparkling like the galaxy in your twin necklaces.
Suddenly when you blinked he was gone, making your heart pick up pace in your chest, “Boo.” You heard River whisper into your ear from behind. You yelped, your head whipping back to look at him but he was already gone. The couch springs creaked, and you turned your head to see him sitting back in his place.
“What the actual fuck just happened.” You ask, staring at him with wide eyes “What are you like… able to teleport or some shit?”
River merely nods, smiling at you “Basically, but that’s child’s play compared to what I’m about to tell you.” He says “When I say our people’s power is unique, what I mean is we’re able to travel between universes. That’s how we’re both safe here, your father thought it would be smart to put you in the farthest universe possible. It’s the last place any of our people would go because of how impossible it is to get here.”
“And the only way you were able to get here is because of that necklace.” You ask him, pointing at the object in question.
“Essentially, yes. While I could have gone to any universe I wanted, I knew that since we’re the last of our people it would be safest if we stuck together, and so I could fulfil your father’s wish for me to protect you. And it was the best decision I’ve ever made.”
You slowly opened your eyes, blinking up at the stars twinkling above both Sylvie and you. One silent tear slipped from your eye, relief as you felt the headache finally begin to go away. Enough of the gap in your memories had been filled so now you could rest without fear of going into a coma.
“How do you feel?” Sylvie asks as she helps you sit up.
“I’m not sure…” You whisper, unable to look away from the stars.

No matter where you went in the TVA, there was no escaping that grey, lifeless, atmosphere that came with it. There was no escaping the lies this place was built upon, the brainwashing, the kidnapping in order to keep balance and peace. Your entire life had been completely reconstructed in the eyes of He Who Remains, becoming an obedient guinea pig working in a maze with no knowledge of your true self.
In this moment you wished you could go back to the simplicity of not knowing, you wished you could go back to the never ending exhaustion if it meant you could escape the ache you felt in your heart as everything finally began to hit you, your weeks of denial and pretending coming to an end.
When you returned from the beach with Sylvie you had attempted to sleep. You tossed and turned, practically begging to be able to sleep just so you could escape from your mind. But the second you did sleep, your brain was plagued with more memories, each one more painfully happy than the last. So you decided to take a walk after forcing yourself awake.
The long halls of the TVA were a lot less welcoming this time, a bitterness building up inside of you with every step you took until you ended up in the exact place you were looking for.
Your fingers lingered on the doorknob to your office for a second, merely staring inside the dark room for the first time since being back from The Void.
It felt like a hand was gripping your throat, sharp nails biting into your skin as you walked further inside, hearing the heavy door close behind you. You flick the light on giving yourself a clear look of the room you hated the most out of the entire TVA. Your feet dragged along the floor, fingers brushing against the wood of your desk.
You picked up a small, beautiful glass butterfly sculpture that had been gifted to you from Ravonna after you had been attacked. She had given it to you with a ‘get well soon’ card that she made herself, a kind smile on her face, telling you that she hoped it would bring you at least a little comfort during your recovery.
It was a figurine that you stared at day after day, the object being there to taunt you when you’d ask if you could go back to your original job, it was there during your exhaustion, during your long nights of torturous work as you read file after file unable to find any connection without actually being allowed to go investigate the scene yourself.
And now as you stare at it, all you felt was rage building up inside of you.
A scream was ripped from your throat as you threw it across the room with as much force you could muster. The butterfly shattered against the wall with a piercing crash, a sob was ripped from your throat, and your heart hurt in your chest with every trembling breath.
You glared down at your desk with watery eyes, shoving everything off the smooth surface until it was bare. The bulb in the adjustable lamp broke when your heavy name plate fell on top of the shade, putting a dent in the aluminum. There was a loud thud from the paperweight and the rustle of paper flying from their folders and onto the ground.
The chair sitting in front of your desk wasn’t safe from your seething rage either, you stabbed through the leather upholstery with your letter opener that you picked up from the ground, ripping the cushions apart violently and watching the stuffing inside spill out onto the floor.
The tears were like a never ending waterfall down your cheeks. Another sob being wrenched from your shaking lips as your fingers clasped around the smooth wooden arms of your now gutted chair. You threw it with all of your might towards the shelf standing against the right hand wall, it held all of the things you once proudly called trophies, all of them from successful field missions, doing nothing but taunting you in your sorrow. Both objects collided with a loud shatter, some shelves splintering in on each other, the frame slowly came falling forward right towards you.
“Oh shit.” You swore, your voice sounding raspy from crying. You got out of the way just in time, the shelf barley missing you by an inch as it crashed to the ground loudly.
After the shock settled, your tears continued to pour, another sob being wrenched from deep within your chest
You went over to the cart that held all of your fancy tumblers, something you had joked with Mobius saying it was “for decoration” as you weren’t really much of a drinker. And as the memory of your lost family and home planet settled on your shoulders, you kicked the cart over, hearing each tumblr shatter, shards of glass skidding along the tile and catching at the carpet under your desk.
With a sigh you looked around the room, taking in the damage you had done to the space around you. There were papers scattered all over the floor, broken shards of glass twinkling under the lights, furniture destroyed. The only thing that remained was a single tumbler that had landed on the carpet, saving it from being completely broken. You walked over slowly, feet dragging through the ruined files. You picked up the chipped tumblr, opening the cabinet underneath your desk drawer and pulling out the wine you had been saving for special occasions.
The tears were still rolling down your cheeks, but you had no more energy to make a noise. You felt numb, your emotions merely in the background as you poured a generous amount of wine into the tumbler glass. When you picked it up you saw your reflection briefly, your eyes flickering a dull blue for the briefest second.
---
The wine was quickly disappearing from it’s bottle. Cup after cup you pour, trying to wash away the memories that now so ruthlessly plagued your brain. Every time you closed your eyes you could see River, hear his voice as he told you that everything you knew in your life was a lie.
It felt like no matter what corner you turned down, you’d be greeted with a new secret, salt in your already throbbing wound. Not only had your life been robbed from you from birth, taken from your home planet and put on earth, but your life on earth was torn away from you as well. You were forced into a new life, a new purpose, only to watch it crumble into your hands and sit as your past taunts you with what you could never have again.
You didn’t even notice the door had opened, until legs walked into your line of sight, your eyes glued on the littered floor. Slowly, you looked up to see Loki, he was reading the label on the nearly empty wine bottle that you had sitting on your desk.
“Seems like you’ve been busy.” He comments while setting the bottle back down, earning an eye roll from you.
“What d’you want?” You say, your words slurring together a little as you downed your fourth glass. You slam the tumbler down on your desk a little harsher than you intended.
Loki turned around slowly taking in the damage you caused, hands taking purchase behind his back as he kicked through the papers strewn about on the tile floor.
“I talked to Sylvie.”
“Okay?” You lean back in your desk chair, “An’ I should care about this, why?”
“She told me what happened, so naturally I came to see if you were okay. And to offer something for your troubles.” He looked over his shoulder at you, his expression remaining neutral.
You crossed your arms, blowing through your nose as you shook your head, looking at him suspiciously “Oh, you want t’offer help for the troubles you caused?” You jab your finger in his direction.
Loki looks at you, “I’m offering to help you learn more about your power.” He says.
You bark out a laugh “You’re actually joking right?” You ask angrily “What makes y’think I want to learn how to use my powers?” You spit the words at him, Loki knits his brows, confused. “The only thing I want to do is forget all of the bullshit that I learned about myself today.”
“You can’t just run away from what you truly are.” He says “It’ll always catch up to you eventually.”
A scoff comes from you as you shake your head, “God just shut up already. If it weren’t for you I wouldn’t feel like fucking running. This is all your fault, if you would have just left that fucking teseract alone everything would be fine! The TVA would be running like normal, and I wouldn’t feel like I’m constantly teetering on the edge of a mental breakdown!” You yell, venom lacing your shaky voice.
Slowly you stand from your desk chair, swaying forward a little before being able to catch yourself, you straighten yourself to the best of your ability, grasping your fingers around the neck of the wine bottle and walking around your desk.
You shove past the god childishly, “Have a good night, asshole.” You say over your shoulder, turning the light to your office off, leaving him in the darkness as you slam the door shut. You begin walking down the hall towards Mobius’ office, seeking the comfort of his couch.
The inside of his office was clean, nicely kept, and beautifully decorated with his accomplishments. Not as showy as Ravonna’s office was but in a similar taste, it was a comforting, warm place, the only place that truly felt like home in the TVA.
You sit your wine bottle down next to the couch, hearing the glass clink against the tile as you slowly sit down, muscles feeling stiff. You tug at the blanket thrown over the back of the couch, draping it over your body, head resting comfortably on one of the soft pillows, a soft sigh leaving your lips. It wasn’t long before your eyelids began to droop, the warmth from the wine lulling you to sleep.

Your eyes stayed glued to the open field where Alioth was, the imposing cloud threatening to devour anything and everything. The danger Sylvie was about to put herself in worried you. While you knew how strong her powers were, you knew that if she made one mistake she would die.
The possibility of that happening made you a lot more scared than you thought it would. She had been fighting for this for years. The opportunity to finally take down the TVA at her fingertips. And you were all too willing to help her take those steps towards her goal.
You took a deep breath, placing your hand on her shoulder gently squeezing.
“Okay, so what’s the next move?” Mobius yells over the thunder that roared in the sky, purple lightning striking like a snake in the clouds.
“The TVA needs to be brought down. We don’t know who created it or where they are, but that thing out there does. When it hit me earlier, I linked to it. It was brief but I caught a glimpse of something, and I think if I can get close enough to it, I can enchant it, and it’s gonna take me to whoever’s behind all of this.” She takes the TemPad she took from Ravonna from her pocket, handing it to Loki.
He heaved a sigh while looking down at the device, “I’m staying.” He says.
“Loki, I don’t know if this is gonna work.” Sylvie looks at him.
“You go, I go.” He said, giving her no room to argue.
Nobody protested. For once Loki was making a selfless act to sacrifice himself for the betterment of other people, he was going to help find the truth and take the TVA down. Your only hope is that it’s not in vain, that they are able to get through.
Loki hands the TemPad to you. You looked down at his hand, his fingers softly brushing against yours. You slowly backed up from him dropping your hand to your side.
The device in the hands of the youngest Loki beeped “It’s happening, guys.” He announced “The branch will be right out there.” He pointed to the field.
“We’ll give your regards to Renslayer.” Mobius yells over the wind as you get the timedoor ready.
“Oh, please do.” Sylvie says with a smile.
“You boys want a free ticket out of here?” Mobius asks the other Lokis.
“What? No. We’re staying here.” The youngest shook his head.
“This is our home.” The older Loki agrees with a nod, followed by a growl from alligator Loki.
Loki looked back at his three counterparts and asked “Are sure? What about Alioth?”
“We’ve survived this long. We know what we’re doing.”
The child stepped forward “Loki, you’re gonna need this on your journey.” He says, conjuring the same dagger he had used to light the fire. Loki looked at him for a second before finally taking it and conjuring a scabbard on his back.
“Good luck. I hope you find what you’re looking for.” The oldest Loki encourages.
Loki smiles nodding at him and you watch as the three Loki’s make their departure. You give them a small wave and open the timedoor for you and Mobius. You look at it, almost scared for what you’ll find on the other side.
“Looks like you got away in the end.” Mobius says to Loki.
He nods, tilting his head with a smile “I always do. What will you do at the TVA?”
“Burn it to the ground.” Mobius says “Thanks for the spark.”
“Finally, I can see if I actually am a pyromaniac or not.” You joke, “My bets are set on ‘yes’.” You see Sylvie smile and Loki laughed softly.
“Well, see you later, Loki.”
Mobius holds his hand out, only for Loki to stare at it for a second, shaking his head and pulling Mobius in for a hug instead. You couldn’t hide the smile that crept up onto your face.
“Thank you my friend.” Loki says.
Mobius looks over at Sylvie and jokingly says “You’re my favorite.”
You looked back out at the field, stepping forward to stand next to Loki after he pulled away from Mobius. You felt Loki’s fingers brush against the back of your hand, ghosting against your skin with the wind. The thunder rumbled above, and with a final sigh you turned towards Loki, placing an arm on his bicep.
“Whoever’s on the other side of that thing…” You look out at the thunderous cloud “Kick their ass for me, will you?”
“Oh trust me.” He looks at you with a smirk “They won’t know what hit them.”
“Good. Stay safe out there.” You say.
You stepped back from Loki, turning around and placing your hand on Sylvie’s shoulder, giving her a nod and walking through the timedoor with Mobius right behind you.
Both of you stepped out into Mobius’ office, running a hand through your hair while trying not to think about every single possible horrible scenario of what could happen today. What if it didn’t work? What if instead of defeating whatever evil is behind the TVA you all just make everything worse? What if Loki and Sylvie got eaten by Alioth? You could feel Mobius standing just a little bit behind you, papers rustling over his desk.
“What are we going to do once this is all over?” You ask quietly “I already feel like I’ve lost my purpose before we’ve even done anything.” The rustling stopped and you could hear the soft steps of Mobius’ shoes against the tiles as he walked closer to you “I know that this isn’t the life I was supposed to have, but since I don’t remember everything from my past. This is all I know.” You look at him, his brows were knit together.
“Well, there’s always time to figure it out.” He reassures, placing a hand on your shoulder.
You breathe out a sigh, nodding to yourself “Alright then. Are you ready to break everyone’s reality?”
“I’ve been ready.” Mobius smiles and chuckles lightly.
---
You and Mobius worked quickly, releasing B-15 from the holding cell in the Time Theater and telling her the plan you had. She was going to go to Earth before Ravonna was taken by the TVA and lead other Minutemen there, showing them the truth of their reality. It would be the easiest and quickest way to do this, distracting everyone else while you and Mobius pursue Ravonna and confront her.
And here you were again, staring at the hourglass patterns on her office doors while standing behind Mobius. He glances back at you before knocking on the door.
“I said I wasn’t to be disturbed.” She calls from inside. You couldn’t help but roll your eyes at that.
Mobius opened the door anyway, walking inside “Well you’re not gonna be happy to see us.” Ravonna turned around from where she was standing over her desk, back turned to the door “We’re back.” He whispers. You look around her office curiously and looking at her, you give her a small wave and sarcastic smile.
“If anyone was ever gonna make it back from The Void, I supposed it was gonna be you two.” She replies, just standing there stiffly.
“Oh, well, you know, one man’s Void is another man’s piece of cake.” He touches the baton he was holding to his shoulder.
Ravonna inhales deeply with a smile on her face, “So, you’re gonna prune me?”
“Yeah… But, you know, my standards might be a little higher in that area than yours. You know, with close personal friends.” He gestures between the both of them.
“I’m sorry.” She says with a tilt of her head “I couldn't let you get in the way of our mission.”
“Mission?” He asks “The Time-Keepers are fake. We’re all variants. What mission?”
“It can’t have been for nothing. That’s why I had to prune you.” She brought her TemPad to her mouth “Hunter D-90 to my office, immediately.”
You couldn’t help but chuckle at that “Yeah. Sorry, Ravonna. That’s not gonna work out the way you think it is.” You took out the pen you had tucked into your pants pocket.
She looked at you, her fear evident on her face “What did you do?”
“Oh you know.” You shrug, dropping the pen on her floor “Found you on Earth.”
“I think people are ready for a little truth now. You know, like the TVA is a lie.” Mobius says.
“What if it’s a necessary one? Someone created the Time-Keepers. They created this whole place. They gave us all purpose. I have to believe they had a reason.”
“No, because I’ve seen the horror waiting for people when they get pruned, and there’s nothing necessary about that.” You nod in agreement.
Ravonna tried to defend her statement, saying that only chaos and death would follow if the timeline wasn’t pruned like it ‘had to be’. You gave a humorless chuckle, looking at the ceiling for a second before looking down at her. The delusions she had about this place being a good-doing peace keeper were honestly sad.
“What about free will?” You ask.
She scoffs, smiling wide as if to mock you “Free will? Only one person gets free will. The one in charge.” She turns around going back to her desk.
“Don’t you realize how messed up that sounds?” You ask, taking a step towards her “How come some nameless person is allowed to snatch us up from our homes, our lives, and create a so-called purpose for us to fulfill while erasing every bit we have left of ourselves but our faces?”
“Shut up.” She shakes her head, not looking back at you.
“No. You sent us to die, you were supposed to be a friend to Mobius, and I used to think so highly of you.” You chuckle bitterly “What the hell happened to you? I mean seriously? What makes someone turn down a path like this? So devoted even when the truth is shoved right down your throat.”
She didn’t budge, still hurriedly packing her briefcase of various files and books “Nothing happened to me. I didn’t change.”
Mobius was the one to speak up this time “You didn’t change? You betrayed me.”
“No, no. You betrayed me!” She yelled, pointing right at him “I looked out for you, hung my neck for you, and you both suffer a crisis of faith and turn to those variants?” She spits “Eons of friendship. And you threw it all away on a couple of Lokis. No, Mobius. I didn’t betray you.” She looked at you, “And I used to think so much better of you too, it’s so disappointing seeing you help the enemy. But I can’t say I’m surprised.”
“Are you kidding me?” You scoff, your fists clench at your sides.
Mobius walked up behind you, softly placing his hand on your shoulder to calm you down.
“We can’t take away people’s free will, Ravonna. Can’t you see that?” He tries to reason, rubbing his hand on your back softly. She ignores the both of you, and starts typing on your TemPad instead. “What are you doing?”
A TimeDoor starts to open “What I need to do.”
“Wait, stop.” Mobius urges, walking towards her “Look, maybe we can build this into something better together.”
She scoffs “I’m sorry, Mobius.”
“I’m not gonna let you go.” He powers up the baton.
“Oh shit.” You whisper to yourself. Mobius was definitely not a fighter so you were preparing yourself to step in if you had to.
“Please, Mobius.” Ravonna whispers “Even with that… You’re of no danger to me.” She glances over at you.
“Is that what you think?” Mobius asks, “Let’s see.” He walks forward, at least trying to prune her. She was easily able to block it though, grabbing the baton and pulling it from his grasp easily. She kicked him to the ground harshly, making him groan in pain.
You charged her next, kicking her in the side and going to grab the hand that held the baton, but she was faster than you, switching it into her other hand and striking you in the face with the sharp tip on the other side of the baton. Your torso twisted as you fell to the ground face forward, you fell to your knees and caught yourself with your hand. Your cheek pulsed painfully and you could feel warm blood trickling down your chin. You turned to see her aiming the baton at you, daring you to try that again.
“Your fighting is predictable.” She says, breathing heavily.
“Yeah? And what does that say about you? Since you’re the one who taught me how to fight.” You spit, glaring up at her “Go ahead. Do it.”
She stares at you for a second, bringing the baton back to your throat and deactivating it. She looks at Mobius before turning around and grabbing her briefcase, and walking towards the TimeDoor she had spawned.
“Where are you gonna go?” Mobius asks.
Ravonna turns her head to look at him “In search of free will.” She says, walking into the TimeDoor.
You look at Mobius and stand back up, fingers going up to feel your injured cheek, “Fuck.” You hiss, pulling your hand back and seeing the blood coating your fingertips. “I can’t tell if she was mocking us, or if she just suddenly had a change of heart after slashing my face open.” You joke, walking over to Mobius and helping him stand up.
He moves your face to the side gently so he can get a closer look at your face “We need to get this cleaned up.” He says.
You nod, looking down at your bloody fingers again. “Yeah, probably. Would hate to bleed out through my face.” You chuckle, giving him a small smile. You both made your way to the door, turning to look at Mobius as you walked down the hall. “We should probably go see how the timeline’s doing too.”
---
Once you were in Mobius’ timeline observance room he began going through the drawers of one of the desks for a first aid kit that other employees usually had tucked inside. A precaution just in case anything happened. You were thankful that he was willing to go through the trouble, knowing you didn’t want to try and do this by yourself.
If there was one thing to make light of in your current situation, it was that you found an amazing friend in Mobius thanks to the TVA. Not only was he your closest friend, but the man you trusted the most over anyone else. He was a genuine person, a man with a heart of gold and a lot of care to give out even for those he doesn’t know. He’s helpful, reassuring, he listens to you, and respects you..
You flinched away when you felt him gently dab the blood away from your wound, the skin around it throbbing from the pain. You couldn’t help but hiss when he accidentally brushed the tender skin with his pinky, his apologies following quickly. It hurt like hell.
“Do you think this’ll leave a cool scar?” You ask, seeing Mobius shake his head, trying to hide his smile.
“You need to stop getting yourself hurt. Soon enough you’ll start lookin’ like a mummy with all these bandages.” He chuckles.
You look over his shoulder to the observing screen that shows the timeline. There were only a couple of minimal branches so far, making you feel a mix of emotions. On one hand you were glad that time wasnt collapsing in on itself, but on another you were scared that Loki and Sylvie were in danger.
“You think it’ll work?” You ask, staring at the screen still as the three timelines continue to branch.
“I can only hope it does.” Mobius replies after a second of silence.
Just as Mobius was taking the gauze out of its packet Loki walked into the room, he looked around frantically before his eyes landed on you. You stood up from the desk chair you were sitting in and walked up to him quickly, standing in front of him.
The second of relief was gone when you noticed that his companion was missing “Where’s Sylvie?” You ask, worried evident in your tone “Is she okay?”
Loki was trying to steady his breathing as he nodded “She’s fine. But we made a terrible mistake.” He says, making your stomach drop a little “We freed the timeline. We found him beyond the storm. A Citadel at the End of Time. He’s terrifying. He planned everything. He’s seen everything. He knows everything. It’s complicated. Okay? But someone is coming. Countless different versions of a very dangerous person. And they’re all set on war. We need to prepare.” Loki rambles frantically.
“Hey, try to breathe okay?” Mobius says, getting up to stand next to you, carefully reaching forward to touch his arm “We’ll figure this out, but you need to sit down for a second. I need to patch up her cheek. Then when I’m done we can go find Sylvie and figure out our gameplan okay?” He reassures the trickster.
Loki looks at you, finally noticing your slashed cheek “What happened?” He asked.
“I tried to kick Ravonna’s ass.” You chuckle “It didn’t really go as planned.”
“Clearly.” He replies, stepping back and letting you go back to the desk chair you were sitting in before he came in.
While Mobius was patching your wound Loki told you both what happened, the man they met that was so kindly called ‘He Who Remains’, which totally wasn’t oddly creepy. He talked about the man’s charisma, and how good he was at talking.
He Who Remains knew the answer to everything because he knew exactly what would be said. He had tried to convince both him and Sylvie to take his place, to run the TVA and let it continue how it always has.
While Loki and Sylvie talked to the man, he had successfully planted a seed of doubt into Sylvie, convincing her that all Loki wanted was a throne and people to rule over. Resulting in a big fight where Sylvie pushed Loki away at the last second, sending him back to the TVA so she could finally kill the man who robbed her of her life.
Once Mobius was done you all stood, ready to go find Sylvie and bring her back.
The likeness of her being in a good mindset was low, so you were all bracing yourselves for what was to come. You were all thinking about how you could get back to The Void, coming to the conclusion that the only true way was probably by pruning yourself, but there was no telling if Alioth had taken his place once again or if he was truly gone for good. There were a lot of risks you were planning to take in order to get Sylvie back and safe.
Before you could even set out to look for a baton, a Timedoor opened a few feet in front of you. Sylvie walked through the orange barrier, her eyes red and puffy from crying. She brushed past Loki, who tried to reach out for her, leaving down the hallway to who knows where. Loki looks back at both you and Mobius before turning to follow after her.
“Should we go after them?” Mobius asks after Loki disappears down the hall.
You shook your head, “No. We should keep an eye on things here while they talk.” You glance back at the timeline observer.
