AU where Shen Qingqiu (original flavour) has a qi deviation and (maybe because the System interferes and tries to transmigrate SY into his body but fails?) something goes really weird and he wakes up to his twelve year old self lying next to him.
Obviously, he can’t actually tell anyone that Shen Jiu is his younger self. He’s not exactly sure how it works and what would happen to him if SJ died, and he remembers what he was like at that age, and it would really damage his reputation if everyone else did too. So, SJ gets introduced as his nephew who has come to learn cultivation under him. Obvious nepotism? Sure, but might as well take advantage of those assumptions people have about him to hide the truth. Who’s going to question him, YQY?
So, SJ becomes a disciple while still being pretty confused as to how he got into a cultivation sect and where Qi-ge is. He gets into a fight with Ming Fan almost immediately, which naturally results in him recruiting LBH (currently 13/14) as his minion, since MF already took the rest. (LBH calls him shixiong even though he really should be shidi). They become pretty close quickly, although it’s still something of a transactional relationship with LBH telling him stuff about how the sect works and helping him work on his writing/reading, while in exchange, SJ fights of the bullies for him because he doesn’t have to worry about getting thrown out.
This changes after a while when SQQ notices how close they’re getting, and in an attempt to convince SJ to stop being friends with LBH, tells him what happened with Yue Qi (leaving out the fact that he’s YQY). This backfires by leading to their first proper bonding moment when LBH comforts him about it.
- meme time -
“This is my nephew. Please ignore him, he’s weird”
young!SJ: not sure if I actually have family or if this is a really weird kidnapping
SQQ: you’ve got to act like you’re a rich kid.
SJ: but that means I can’t bite people >:(
LBH: I can help shixiong learn to read 🥰
SJ after meeting LQG: bet you I can scam him
LBH: Shen-shixiong, no!
SJ: Shen-shixiong yes!
There are theories that SJ is SQQ and YQYs son and the reason their relationship is like it is is because YQY refused to raise him.
QHT: that’s him officer, that’s the one who murdered my family
The cultivator she’s speaking to: ma’am that’s a child
SQQ: just act normal and don’t embarrass me
SJ: ok starts gunning for future peak lord position
SQQ: wait not like that

gently in the cold dark earth
scum villain's self saving system word count: 2k canon divergent / no system au; sy transmigrates into an empty npc role; gray lotus binghe loves his shixiong more than life and he's ready to make it everyone's problem

The first thing Luo Binghe does when he escapes the Abyss is return to Cang Qiong Mountain.
With Xin Mo secured to his back, the way could be instant if he so chose—the journey of a thousand miles reduced to a single step—but he unsheathes the elegant jian at his hip instead.
Yong Liang sings sweetly for him, the snow white blade still shining and untainted even after years of helping Luo Binghe carve his way through hell. It has never once failed him, soulbound to the one person still on this earth who has never failed him.
“Take it,” his shixiong insisted, low and urgent. The Abyss was behind them, an even deadlier threat was ahead, and Without A Cure clogging his meridians made Luo Binghe the best choice to wield the only unshattered spirit sword they had between them. “Binghe, take it.”
He pressed until Luo Binghe’s grip curled tight around the hilt, not hesitating to put his soul in Luo Binghe’s hands even with the rosy glow of an unsealed demon mark shining on his face.
Luo Binghe flies at a pace best described as dangerously reckless, hardly smelling the fragrant spring air or feeling the sun on his face. His robes are a disgrace, his hair a tangled, matted mess, and it occurs to him that he could stop somewhere and clean himself up, make himself presentable, but it’s a brief, fleeting thought.
Shen Yuan would be furious to find out that Luo Binghe wasted even a single second returning to his side.
——
He passes through the ancient wards effortlessly, feeling them fall away from him like water. It’s a simple thing to tamp down on his demonic qi, to disguise the parts of him that those so-called righteous cultivators would scorn. He ghosts through the familiar grounds as eagerly as a starving animal bolting down a fresh game trail, but one by one, all of their familiar haunts come up empty, without even a lingering trace of Shen Yuan’s spiritual energy left behind.
The head disciple’s room is dusted and undisturbed, as if its occupant might walk through the door at any moment, but the lack of clutter and the empty book shelf makes it very clear to Luo Binghe what the truth must be.
If Shen Yuan returned to the peak after the Conference, he didn’t stay.
All at once, images crowd the front of his mind—his shixiong grieving, pulling away, turning his back on those responsible for his heartache.
Yue Qingyuan, always only a step behind wherever his precious Xiu Ya sword went, promised that no one wanted to hurt them. They only wanted to help.
He looked so solemn and righteous that Shen Yuan reluctantly allowed himself to be convinced. Luo Binghe, who had gone to the man for help after a bloody whipping when he was a child, only to be given a walnut cake and turned away at the door, knew better.
He wasn’t surprised when Shen Yuan was wrenched away from him, and shizun sent him staggering off the cliff with a spiritual dagger buried to the hilt in his chest, all of it happening within a matter of seconds—but it still hurt.
Shen Yuan’s scream followed him all the way down.
I’m alive, Luo Binghe thinks, with no one there to tell it to. I came back to you. Let me come back to you.
——
Including time spent in the abyss, it’s three years before they meet again.
Luo Binghe’s revenge is his second priority at best, but he is nothing if not efficient and knows how to kill two birds with the same stone. Huan Hua affords him ample resources and opportunities to scour the world for his missing shixiong while playing the role of earnest and diligent new disciple. He snatches up each mission that comes along as though  eager to prove his worth to the sect that so graciously took him in, but he takes every excuse to wander, to search, to make conversation with vendors and innkeepers and passing strangers.
Have you seen my heart? It lives outside of me in the form of a beautiful young man and tends to wander. Very contrary, likes to fuss over people, could argue the stripes off a lushu just for fun. You’d know it if you met it. You’d never forget.
The days blur together, meaningless and gray, but he doesn’t stop looking. Shen Yuan still exists somewhere in this world, because otherwise Luo Binghe wouldn’t. It’s the only thing that makes sense. The alternative doesn’t bear thinking about.
And then, finally—an afternoon in Jinlan City, when Luo Binghe arrives in a throng of incompetent gold-clad Huan Hua disciples, to investigate a plague of all things—
He’s there.
In dark, neutral colors and plain clothes, a traveling cloak with its hood resting down around his shoulders, as if his beauty could possibly be lessened by cheap, shapeless fabrics rather than effortlessly enhanced. His hair falls from its half-tail in glorious waves—he never did have the patience for anything elaborate, only wearing braids when one of his sticky shidimei cajoled and convinced him. Traveling alone, who could he possibly have to roll his eyes at and complain about and sit patiently still for?
A pale green ribbon is all that decorates his hair. Luo Binghe recognizes it instantly.
You should spend your allowance on yourself, Binghe,” Shen Yuan scolded him, not for the first time and certainly not for the last.
“But I did,” Luo Binghe protested, widening his eyes and clasping his hands earnestly, the way he knew worked best. “I wanted it! And now that I have it, I want to give it to you.”
Shen Yuan was too clever by half to be truly fooled by the innocent act, but he always folded like paper anyway. He spoiled all of his shidimei but Luo Binghe most of all. Anyone on Qing Jing Peak would be hard-pressed to think of a single example of Shen Yuan telling Luo Binghe ‘no.’
Sure enough, after a second spent visibly wrestling with himself, he blurted, “Oh, fine! Hand it over.”
He wore it every day since. He’s wearing it now. The wind catches the ends of it, sending it streaming behind him like the tails of a paradise flycatcher. Lovely.
For a brief moment, Luo Binghe is frozen where he stands, finally faced with the very thing that he’s been missing for years, that he’s been living a miserable half-life without.
And then he remembers himself and lurches forward. His voice is a tangle in his throat but he manages to choke out, “Shixiong!”
A strike of lightning couldn’t have jolted Shen Yuan into more perfect stillness. He stops mid-step, every inch of him as good as carved from precious jade. He doesn’t turn his head, and the sliver of his face visible from where Luo Binghe stands is very pale.
Luo Binghe wonders suddenly if this has happened to him before—if Shen Yuan has heard a voice on the road or in the market that was almost familiar, that was almost the one he was hoping for, only to be disappointed when he turned to follow it and found a stranger.
Luo Binghe shortens the distance between them with a few anxious steps and tries again.
“Shixiong.”
The older boy whirls around abruptly, as if to get it over with. He’s bracing himself, but Luo Binghe barely has a second to absorb Shen Yuan’s painful-looking anticipation before it bleeds out of his face in favor of something else entirely.
He looks like the earth has fallen out from beneath his feet, like he hardly dares to believe his eyes. Zheng Yang gleams golden at Shen Yuan’s hip, reforged and whole again.
“Binghe?”
“It’s me,” Luo Binghe says softly.
There’s a tableau he’s afraid to break, as if they’re in a delicate dreamscape and a move too sudden or loud might dissolve it. He wants to say I’ve missed you the way lungs miss air, immediately and needfully, I haven’t breathed at all since we’ve been apart. He wants to say you’re my light in the dark, I can only stand in front of you now because I love you too much to ever truly leave you.
Instead, he tells his dearest friend, “This one made you wait. But your Binghe is here.”
Shen Yuan sprints the rest of the way to meet him, almost before he’s even finished talking, and they collide in a solid embrace that knocks the air from them both.
His arms wind around Luo Binghe’s waist like steel bands, fingers digging into the back of his robes, precious face pressed into the crook of his neck and shoulder. Luo Binghe doesn’t hesitate to gather him up close, holding him as tightly and securely as he knows how, burying his nose in his shixiong’s hair and breathing in the familiar, beloved smell of him.
Shen Yuan is a few inches shorter than he remembers. All the better to tuck him beneath Luo Binghe’s chin, to cover and surround him so completely that not even the heavens above can get a decent eyeful.
He wants to grab and bite and pin Shen Yuan beneath him and never let go. His jaw aches with wanting it.
“I’ve been looking for you,” Luo Binghe says, eyes wet. “I went home first.” Unsaid goes the obvious but you weren’t there.
“How could I stay?” Shen Yuan bites out, managing to sound all at once strangled and bewildered and—charmingly—offended. He shakes his head without lifting it, an aggressive nuzzle against Binghe’s shoulder. “After what they did to you, I’d rather die than represent their stupid sect another minute.”
“Step away from it, Shen Yuan,” shizun said coldly. “I’ll put that beast back where it belongs.”
“No,” shixiong said in a voice that was smaller than usual, one that shook. He was frightened, clearly overwhelmed, but he didn’t budge from where he was plastered in front of Luo Binghe like a breathing shield.
“Now.”
“No, shizun.”
“Shizhi,” Yue Qingyuan said gently, offering his hand. “Come here. It will be alright.”
Shen Yuan said, “No. You can’t hurt Binghe. He’s not bad just because of who his parents are. He’s as good as he was yesterday, and the day before that, and the day before that. He’s hardworking and loyal and a sweetheart to anybody who gives him half a chance. He’s so good.”
Liu Qingge was behind the sect leader, sword drawn. Shen Qingqiu was quickly losing what little patience he had, face twisted into a sneer, dark eyes stabbing hatefully at Luo Binghe from over his head disciple’s shoulder. There were more figures rapidly drawing closer, the other peak lords following the flare of Yue Qingyuan’s qi. The standoff was becoming more and more untenable, and Shen Yuan was too smart not to see that, shrinking back against Luo Binghe as much as he could without crowding him closer to the edge.
“You can’t hurt him,” he said again, the closest Luo Binghe had ever heard him come to tears, “he’s my shidi.”
Luo Binghe is unsurprised by his shixiong’s loyalty, because it’s already been proven to him over and over. It’s unremarkable at this point, which is an absolutely remarkable thing in itself. It makes him feel warm with gratitude and affection and ownership.
Shen Yuan is clever and quick on his feet and always three steps ahead, more knowledgeable about flora and fauna than anyone else Binghe has ever known combined, and probably a force to be reckoned with as a rogue cultivator, where the only rules of conduct he has to adhere to are his own.
But Luo Binghe hates to think of him on the road alone, without the little martial siblings who follow him like ducklings, without his Binghe there to make sure he remembers to eat all his meals and comb out his hair before bed. He’s a creature of comfort, made for airy rooms with too many cushions and an abundance of sweets and books to read.
Luo Binghe has fantasized more than once about building a home for Shen Yuan to lounge prettily in. It was, in fact, his favorite flavor of daydream since he was about thirteen.
If Shen Yuan wants to rogue cultivate, then that’s what they’ll do. But Luo Binghe thinks, if he constructs a palace that’s as comfortable as it is grand, and fills it with trashy romance novels and obscure beasts and his own hand-made meals, he can convince his friend to live in it with him.
Shen Yuan needs to be taken care of. Luo Binghe needs to be the one taking care of him. They’re together now and they’ll never be apart again and those needs can both be met.
That possessive, proprietary feeling coils dark and deep inside him, undulating lazily like a serpent who’s fed enough for days, reminding him over and over what he already knows:
Mine.

Shen Yuan has had a push-and-pull relationship with Shen Qingqiu for years. Shen Yuan knows that Shen Qingqiu is meant to be a villain, but he knows just as well that many of the things Shen Qingqiu was accused of in Proud Immortal Demon Way were just shitty misunderstandings, and over the years Shen Yuan has become reluctantly fond of the tsundere asshole that is his Shizun. Abusing Luo Binghe was not a misunderstanding, though, and Shen Yuan will do whatever he can to correct the fact that he wasn't there to protect Luo Binghe when it happened. -- “Shizun, I already said that I like beasts best - if I can’t raise Luo Binghe to be my shidi, can’t I raise him as my pet instead?”

Crack peak lord.
Crack peak lord(s) getting overheard during yet another sleepover/spa day.
Okay so in this story, Shen Yuan and Shang Qinghua get overheard as the duo go into their usual bickering and Shang Qinghua is like "My sON" and Shen Qingqiu scoffs, "What son - with the way that you treat him-"
Shang Qinghua cuts his shixiong off with the most scathing tone that the eavesdropper has ever heard from the An Ding peak lord, "Like the way that you give into his every wants. You are sPoiLiNG him, cucumber-brother."
And thus the eavesdropper has heard enough and immediately goes to work supplying the sect with its much needed tea.
Everyone's now trying to figure out who is Shang Qinghua's bastard son that Shen Qingqiu is apparently spoiling - and just what are the two's relationship?!
Yue Qingyuan is working into a frothing mess of panic, suspicious paranoia, and (hidden) jealousy. Luo Binghe is in an even bigger fit of jealousy, wondering who else is stealing his shizun's precious attention. Ning Yingying and her female friends are busy trying to churn out the latest edition of Shen Qingqiu X Shang Qinghua comics.
It's a busy time for the entire Cang Qiong sect.

Four years later, Shen Qingqiu does the same to Luo Binghe.
Fruiting Body by Calamity Butterfly (Calamity_Butterfly)
“A new body? What has my Shizun done?” Luo Binghe asks mildly.
“Oh, I died again, didn’t I? This time, I died saving you from a qi deviation brought on by that sword,” Shen Qingqiu answers, stroking the caps of the trembling mushrooms still pressed up against his sides. “I suspected I was going to die so I prepared a new body, just in case. But it’s taking a long time to remember myself, and I’m not sure I want to go back once I do.”
Shen Qingqiu awakens in the Sun and Moon Dew Flower body, more fungal than human, and networked into a vast, sentient mycelial network. His new body is more complicated than he anticipated. Luo Binghe finds him, and that is also more complicated than he anticipated.
The Many Trials and Tribulations of Ming Fan by The Feels Whale (miscellea)
Ming Fan just wants to get through ONE supervised night hunt without this happening.
Or: the one where Shen Qingqiu continues to be attractive to people who aren’t Luo Binghe and Liu Qingge. It's a problem.
“Da-shixiong.” Ning-shimei’s groan was barely audible to anyone who didn’t have a cultivator’s enhanced senses. To him and the rest of their assembled siblings, though, it rang out like a bell. The only one who didn’t notice was Shizun. He was up ahead and deep in conversation with the Lord who’d summoned them to investigate a series of local disappearances.
“I saw,” Ming Fan sighed. “Eyes front. Everyone knows their roles.”
Frankly, he’d been braced for this moment since he’d asked around about the family hosting them for the duration of this investigation. He’d discovered that they had two marriage-aged daughters in the household, neither of whom were engaged.
Loaded God Complex, Cock It And Pull It by Camorra
There were three things of which Shen Yuan was absolutely certain. The first, that Luo Binghe was an irredeemable jackass. The second, there was a part of Luo Binghe, and Shen Yuan didn't know how large, that wanted Shen Yuan dead for trussing him like a pig and dumping him on his own front porch. And the third, that Shen Yuan was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with Luo Binghe. P S Y C H !
omg they were roommates by smellslikecitrus
Shen Yuan was a normal chemistry major. What did he do to deserve getting booted into his least-favorite novel?!
Silver lining: Binghe makes really, really good food.
Plastromancy by x_los
"One night, Luo Binghe notices something odd about the way his blood is pooling on the floor of the woodshed."
A twelve year old Luo Binghe meets his Other Shizun.
AQ by x_los
Before he rose to captaincy, Shen Yuan attended a briefing given to all command level officers in Star Fleet that outlined the scope of the Q threat. According to Admiral Picard's report, the omnipotent Q are devious, amoral, unreliable, irresponsible and definitely not to be trusted.
Orphaned stowaway Luo Binghe doesn't even know he is one.
Living With a Tiger by x_los
Shen Yuan has been engaged to Emperor Luo Binghe from almost the hour of his birth. He grows up knowing his place in the world exactly; he is far less certain of his place in his betrothed's guarded affections.
Scum Villain's Accidental Romance System by BurnerAccount
Shen Qingqiu has accepted that yes, this is a novel. And yes, it is going to have stupid plot points that he can (probably) do nothing about. His inevitable, horrible fate is his most probable future - but hey, it's at least a ways off yet, right?
A Stallion novel has stupid tropes, but he's 100% - no, 1000% sure, that these aren't in the standard package.
Anyways, Stan Shen Qingqiu by x_los
Millennial vs Gen Z? Shen Qingqiu wishes.
A young transmigrator has a new idol; Shen Qingqiu is very tired.
I Wish You Were My Husband by Feynite
AU based on The Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir (familiarity with that story's not required).
Wherein Shen Yuan transmigrates into a harem intrigues romance novel (gay edition), Yue Qingyuan really fucks up, Liu Qingge is not suitable for his job, and no one even remotely sees Luo Binghe coming.
Always the Light Falls by Letters2Elvinscend
Growing up is hard. Living up to your mother's expectations is harder. Realizing your Shizun is actually kind of hot is damn near impossible.
System Temporarily Unavailable, Please Don't Abuse The Substitute! by Asymptotical
The System has to go bail another System's world out of a plot crisis.
It told them that its Host would notice, but did they listen? Of course not.
We Never Dreamed These Walls by straightforwardly
When Luo Binghe falls into the Endless Abyss, he accidentally pulls Shen Qingqiu down with him.

TGCF + SVSSS PIDW au
SY transmigrates to PIDW after the realms are merged by LBH, gets himself a nice cozy place to live and gets 3 young disciples from a fallen kingdom, then gets a fourth one and why is the protagonist here?
XL, FX & MQ are left without a home after the realms are merged, they travel together and get into trouble, then they're saved by SQQ and become his disciples.
Time later, SQQ brings back a unconscious child, HC, who becomes the fourth disciple
Also, all this happens after the BingMei vs BingGe extras (this is important)
HC is one of LBH's children (He keeps this a secret)
His mother died after birthing him, he is passed around by the other wives, so he wasn't very protected against all the harem/politic schemes and Plots, tired of all this bs, he runs aways after another murder attempt against him, he hides his identity and ends up being rescued and taken in by SQQ
LBH, having learned a lesson and made some decisions after the whole BingMei vs BingGe ordeal, goes to look for his son And finds out the shizun gentle look-alike, revealing HC's identity in the process (which doesn't actually change much, he still stays with SQQ and his shixiongs accept him)
So LBH embarks in an adventure of fixing his life, himself, his relationship with his son & wooing SY

Qijiuyuan handmaiden au? 👀👀👀 Is there anything from the au you'd be willing to share? Bc that concept sounds Amazing!
oh boy. It's YQY as Count Fujiwara, SJ as Hideko, and SY as Sook-hee. I long to make it historically accurate and relevant to the Japanese colonial occupation of Taiwan.
But thank you so very much for prompting me to dig up my forgotten draft:
Yue Qingyuan kissed him once, against the rough buildings of the Old City. The names and ingredients of construction materials weren’t within the category of things that Shen Yuan knew, but what he did know was the scrape of sharp brick through that hole against the spine of his shirt. That kiss made his back bleed—and he didn’t even know until the next morning.
But that was years ago. Shen Yuan didn’t make a point of counting Yue Qingyuan’s visits either, so that kiss existed like a hazy liquor dream. Not in manifestation, but in its displacement in time. It was simultaneously years ago and just yesterday evening.
So Shen Yuan was taking care to not stare at Yue Qingyuan’s lips when the man was talking. He stared down at the baby in his arms instead, burping the sniffling thing.
“—Lord Yue, seventh son of a royal political family with genuine Japanese blood—”
Qi-jie sourced most of the infants they took in, but this one in his arms had been Shen Yuan’s own find. The mother had been in terrible pain and on the brink of death, but Shen Yuan liked to think he’d given that woman some peace in her last moments. She’d handed the baby over willingly enough with that achingly solemn nod that Shen Yuan had done his best to return.
“—uncle to marry her himself.”
“Disgusting bastard.”
“The Lord arrives just in time to seduce the Lady Qiu, we elope, put her in an asylum, and you all get ten percent of her inheritance.”
A classic Qi Qingqi brow rose.
“Seems kind of harsh for you, Shixiong.”
Yue Qingyuan’s eyes went bleak and flinty.
“You all know there’s someone I’m looking for. This will give me the means.”
“Besides,” Qi Qingqi agreed, always the first to question but also first to reaffirm her allegiance, “who’s to say she won’t like living in the asylum better?”
A-Luo, Shen Yuan thought, eyes going warm as the baby suckled the tip of his finger into his little mouth. His baby was so well-behaved that Shen Yuan had not needed to dip it in rice wine beforehand. Mu Qingfang, who sometimes cringed after idly scratching his upper lip, was less lucky, and had made multiple sad proclamations that if they didn’t get out of this line of business soon, he’d never stop smelling like a fermentation pot.
“Whoever takes the risk with me gets twenty percent plus whatever jewelry we secret out.”
“Is,” Mu Qingfang said, incredulous, “the job so difficult as to warrant that level of compensation?”
“To my knowledge, the Lady—” An opaque pause. “—is not so easy going.”
“So no matter how easy Yue-shixiong is to fall in love with…”
Yue Qingyuan offered Qi Qingqi’s smirk a noncommittal smile, and Mu Qingfang ducked his head to hide a grin.
“So how about it, A-Yuan?”
Shen Yuan gave A-Luo a sweet, lingering kiss on the forehead before handing the baby to Liu Qingge, who was, as always, scowling beside him. A-Luo immediately began to fuss.
“Shen Yuan,” Liu Qingge snapped. Shen Yuan thumbed a streak of coal from his cheek. “I can’t go with you. It’s an unnecessary risk.”
“It’s expedient.” With a side glance at Yue Qingyuan’s steady, yet vaguely ashamed gaze, he added, “But I’ll take twenty-five percent once we’re done. And a passport.”
“A-Yuan has big travel plans for after?” Yue Qingyuan asked, eyes rainbowing.
“Liu-shidi promised to take me away,” Shen Yuan teased. The coal from the steamship had gotten even Liu Qingge’s ears black, but Shen Yuan knew from his dear friend’s expression that the ear tips had gone red underneath.
Gritting his teeth, Liu Qingge hoisted A-Luo more firmly in his arm. A-Luo’s sniffling turned into a reedy, heart-wrenching cry.
“I’ll take care of your baby,” Liu Qingge vowed.
“Which makes him our baby now.” Shen Yuan reached up to untangle the cloth strap binding his hair. He strolled across the room past his martial siblings’ furrowed brows until he stood in front of Yue Qingyuan.
“So this is to be my debut grift.” His smile was quiet but genuine. “Do I get a crowning ceremony?”
“Of course,” Yue Qingyuan replied faintly, hands settling on Shen Yuan’s shoulders to turn him around. With his back to Yue Qingyuan, Shen Yuan felt large hands brush out the curls his hair before twisting it up into a high bun.
Yue Qingyuan leaned forward to take the dark green crown Mu Qingfang fetched and now offered—the one their Master left to Shen Yuan before her execution. His jawline felt sharp as it skidded past Shen Yuan’s cheek, and his breath on Shen Yuan’s neck felt like a secret.
“You get a new character too,” Qi Qingqi reminded. “You want to do the honors, Shixiong?”
Yue Qingyuan’s lips parted, but no words came out. His attention was fixed like a knifepoint to Shen Yuan’s back.
“Yue-shixiong?”
Something had gone bad, but whatever it was, there was too much sun outside and too much future on the horizon for Shen Yuan to get dirty with it right now. He could figure it out later; Yue Qingyuan would tell him if he needed to know.
So Shen Yuan turned around, his hair up and spine newly bared.
“How about autumn?” he asked Yue Qingyuan, who was always so inscrutable in his grief. Shen Yuan figured he must be missing their Master something fierce. “To commemorate the event.”
“Qingqiu,” left Yue Qingyuan’s lips, and across the room, A-Luo babbled an agreement. Shen Yuan—now Shen Qingqiu—didn’t smile, but he did close his eyes to let that name sink in.
Shen, his family name, a symbol of those who’d birthed and lost him.
Qing, his Master’s name, a proclamation of teachings learned from these poor-rotted streets.
Qiu, his new master’s name, and the object of his first (and hopefully last) con.
Somewhere in that name he was presumed to exist.
//
On Shen Yuan’s very first night in the Qiu Manor, Lady Qiu woke up screaming. Shen Yuan came stumbling out of his closet-bed and threw himself across the hall into his Lady’s bedroom, ready to step between her and any sword-wielding assailant.
He found Lady Qiu thrashing in bed, caught in the throes of a nightmare and her expensive silken sheets. After a moment, Shen Yuan threw himself in the way of danger—he caught Lady Qiu’s wrist before she slammed it into the headboard and pinned the Lady once to the bed with a firm shake.
“Lady Qiu! Please wake up, you’re having a nightmare!”
“Xiao Jiu!” Lady Qiu screamed, face screwed up like a wailing baby’s. Her skin was red and splotchy where Shen Yuan could see under the moonlight. “Help me, Xiao Jiu!”
The weight of Shen Yuan’s thumb on Lady’s Qiu’s delicate wrist turned sympathetic.
“I’m not Xiao Jiu, I’m Qingqiu. I’m going to be your servant starting from today. I’m Qingqiu.”
Lady Qiu’s eyes shot open, glistening like congealed blood in the dark.
“You’re not Xiao Jiu?”
“I’m not.” Seeing that Lady Qiu was settling down, Shen Yuan quickly let go and pulled back to stand up straight. But where would Xiao Jiu be? Can I go get him for my Lady?”
On the bed, Lady Qiu was silent for a while. Though Shen Yuan couldn’t see her face, her legs were akimbo above the sheets, and her knees looked as delicate as eggshells. Shen Yuan longed to bundle her back up and tuck her safely away.
“No,” came the Lady’s voice, suddenly cold with grief. “You can’t. There is no Xiao Jiu, Xiao Jiu is dead. You. Get a light on.”
Shen Yuan struck a match and lit the gas lamp on the bedside table. The bottom half of Lady Qiu’s face was hidden under her comforter, and her lashes fluttered once in Shen Yuan’s direction.
“You’re…” she murmured, those eggshell knees of hers kicking again. Her nightgown, Shen Yuan noted, had slipped up to her thighs, and only a corner of the comforter was pulled over her stomach, leaving her chest heaving under one thin layer of satin.
“Everybody’s dead,” Lady Qiu told him. The firelight scorched such vivid shadows across her pupils as black as cooling lava. “I’m so alone. Qingqiu, are you here to comfort me?”
Why a male servant? Qi Qingqi had asked while they were going over the details to the job, shapely brows scrunched up in a piercing frown. Shouldn’t a fancy lady be in want of a handmaiden?
There are, Yue Qingyuan and answered haltingly, reasons. You’ll just have to trust me. Her last servant was also a local boy.
Shen Yuan felt something in his stomach go tight at the sight of the Lady Qiu so exposed and vulnerable on the bed like this. And when her hand stretched out, palm open in need, Shen Yuan couldn’t help himself anymore.
He exhaled in passion and leaned back over the bed. He freed the comforter from its useless twist around Lady Qiu’s body in one succinct pull and rolled the Lady up all soft and warm in it.
Then he sat down at the very edge of the bed, resting a hand on Lady Qiu’s now-protected shoulder.
“I’m here to comfort you,” Shen Yuan promised. “I’m here to give you everything you need. My lady is not alone anymore. Qingqiu will take care of you.”
“—qiu…”
Shen Yuan shushed her murmurs softly, patting the Lady’s shoulder in a slow, pulsing rhythm.
“Can I sing you a song?” he whispered.
He counted five sleepy beats before the Lady, almost imperceptibly, nodded.

shen yuan and shen jiu fic recs
Anon wanted some recs for fics with shen yuan and shen jiu interacting as the focus of the fic. None of these are shipping the two -- not that i’m against it at all, just a bit harder to find so just focusing on platonic here! Please enjoy, these are in no particular order:
A Pairing of Souls (series) by @muzu-writes
This is a buddy cop movie. SY wakes up in the plant body and a ghostly SJ is right next to him and basically says “alright wake up hurry up let’s go get my body bitch”. These two teaming up to get into Huan Hua Palace and steal SJ’s body from the disaster that is LBH is so fun and well written. It’s a series now and the focus in the current instalment has shifted to Bingyuan but it’s still so good 🥺  I actually drew fanart of this lol x x
Local 12 Year Olds Refuse to Be Separated; What Happens Next Will Warm Your Heart by @alllula
Very well written fic set in the PIDW world but where cultivators can fuse like gems for advantage in battle. SY and SJ (brothers) fused for safety when they were sold to the Qiu and continued living that way even when they became a peak lord. Soooooo interesting and seeing SJ and SY so perfectly in sync is really fun. Especially love that SY, SJ and YQY can all form a perfect fusion while in battle and everyone else is like 👀 👀 👀  like YES GIMME THAT GOSSIP PLEASE
Two for the Price of One by Empressed (@EmmyEmberossa on Twitter)
ngl I can’t remember this one perfectly but I remember really enjoying how close SY and SJ got. They eventually become sworn brothers and SJ is so happy to have a friend 😭  Cue the rest of CQ meddling to find out which demon has bewitched their shixiong into being so happy!!!
indulgence Points +100 by Shoutowo (Twitter)
beautifully written from the start to the end with an extremely adorable piece of art to accompany it. SY is the son of SQQ and YQY and SY wants to be just like his papa SJ!!! I die from all of the cuteness and softness in this fic, so grateful it exists 🙏
Baptism of Fire by Zyva (@Beiyuann on Twitter)
SY is SJ’s biological son. This is....Mwah. Masterpiece. MASTERPIECE. The way SJ is written here is perfect. It’s a really convincing representation of a genuine father and son relationship between the two. Shen Jiu really really cares for SY and it’s so sweet and he struggles so hard to learn from his quickly growing son. Bonus awkward YQY and LBH having an embarassingly massive crush on SY and having to suffer through SJ absolutely knowing all of this makes this perfect.  💖
The Life of Times of Peerless Green by Eram_Quod_Es
Superhero AU with some transmigration flavour. SY and SJ are brothers. SY is constantly getting into deep shit and gets battered so SJ is constantly worried. He shows how much he cares in an extremely SJ way and it’s very sweet and also a bit sad tbh!! The writing for this is amazing and you can tell that a lot of thought has gone into the world building. 😊
Nothing Gold was Good Anyway by @alllula
This is probably the first ‘SY as SJ’s son’ fic I read. The entire starting sequence is so fun, SY and SJ just immediately vibe with each other. SY is a kid working part time as a laundry worker at the brothel that SQQ frequents. He looks just like SQQ so SQQ decides to freak out CQ and brings back SY and claims he’s his son. Antics ensue!! Not complete but definitely a fun read

Shen Yuan shixiong AU - Part 24
New Roots
Ming Fan woke up to the sound of loud voices followed by a terrible screeching sound. He rubbed his eyes and clicked his tongue, annoyed that his rest was interrupted by a bunch of idiots who couldn’t keep it down after curfew.
“Shizun, we need to find an open area! The qi is hurting everyone!”
Hearing the familiar voice, Ming Fan instantly woke up, jumped out of bed, and ran to the door barefooted. He opened it, only to be washed over with an overwhelming unstable spiritual energy that made him weak in the knees. A group of people had stopped in front of his room, discussing urgently in loud voices to cover the terrible screeching coming from who knows where.
“Shen shixiong!”
One of the figures froze and turned to him with a pair of round eyes. It was Shen Yuan shixiong. He was finally back! Shen Yuan was about to open his mouth to answer when their shizun, who was accompanying him along with a varied group of people, cut right in.
“Ming Fan, stay here and make sure that nobody follows us. A-Yuan, follow me.”
Ming Fan, sensing like the situation truly was urgent, acknowledged the order with a nod and went to grab his boots by the bed in a hurry. As soon as he stepped outside, the group left immediately, leaving the space in front of the dormitory empty except for one person.
“Shimei?”
Ning Yingying smiled weakly as she watched the group disappear in the bamboo forest. Ming Fan noticed how paled she looked and went to offer his help. His shimei didn’t refuse, grabbing his arm with what little strength she had left. Some younger disciples came out of their rooms, confused and curious about what had happened. Ming Fan barked a few orders, sending them back inside, before sitting Ning Yingying on a stone bench by the moon gate at the entrance of the dormitories.
“Shixiong, don’t worry about me. I just need to catch my breath.”
Ming Fan squatted in front of her, studying her face with worry.
“What happened? What were you doing with shixiong’s group? And why are you…? Yingying, did you exchange patrol nights with someone again?”
Ning Yingying pressed a few of her chest acupoints with a frown. She gestured to give her a minute to recover before opening her mouth to explain.
“I’m sorry, shixiong. I did. I just… I missed Shen shixiong and Luo shidi so much. I wanted to be the first to greet them at the gate. And I couldn’t sleep anyway when I learned they were on their way back.”
“Yingying, that’s a whole week of patrol you just imposed on your body. How many hours did you sleep this week?”
“…Not as much as I should’ve.”
Ming Fan sighed, rubbing his eyes in exasperation.
“Shixiong, this shimei is sorry. But I promise I was fine! I was starting to feel a little tired, but nothing serious. It’s… this unstable qi. It was so strong. Even shizun didn’t look too good when he got closer to Noodle.”
Ming Fan blinked.
“Noodle?”
“Mn. Remember the last letter shixiong and A-Luo sent me? Noodle didn’t just get hurt.”
“Then, what’s happening?”
Ning Yingying looked in the direction the group had disappear.
“He’s about to become a dragon.”
--
“Over here!”
Shen Qingqiu had brought them to a big clearing deep in the bamboo forest, away from any form of human life. Shen Yuan ran to the middle, cradling the dusu snake that kept twisting in pain in his arms.
“Shh- It’s ok, you’re ok, you’re fine.”
Truthfully, Shen Yuan was trying to convince himself more than the poor dusu snake. He reached the middle of the soft grass field in a few long strides and knelt there. Luo Binghe followed closely, settling himself in front of him before using his spiritual energy to soothe the creature as much as he could.
The situation didn’t look promising. Shen Yuan’s sleeves were covered in small iridescent scales… and blood. He had studied dusu snakes for years without coming across any cases like this one. Very few among their species became dragons to begin with and it was near impossible to obtain a specimen about to transform. Shen Yuan felt powerless. He thought back on their trip and something finally clicked in his mind.
Noodle had cultivated too fast. They had fought so much and went to so many places full of spiritual energy…
Shen Yuan’s vision turned blurry. He wanted to apologize, but Noodle probably couldn’t hear him now. He pulled the dusu snake closer, hugging him to his chest. The latter’s current body wasn’t strong enough to undergo a dragon transformation and… he might…
Noodle suddenly went completely still. Shen Yuan looked down in panic, only to see a pair of now colorful eyes staring right back at him with complete trust. A small pitiful cry came from the creature, rooting his master to the place he had knelt.
Shen Yuan lifted his gaze to Luo Binghe who simply smiled at him calmly.
Standing at the edge of the open space, Shen Qingqiu’s patience was wearing thin. Why didn’t those two leave the snake? He himself couldn’t get close, the unstable qi made him nauseous and feel like he was going to faint. How strong did his disciples become to bear such a powerful unstable qi without flinching? Or was A-Yuan simply being unreasonable, forcing himself to stay with his pet?
“A-Yuan, you can’t stay there! A-Yuan!”
But Shen Qingqiu’s voice didn’t reach his prized disciple. The ground had started to shake, and wind enveloped the trio, creating a strong spiritual barrier in the middle of the forest glade. From it, Luo Binghe locked eyes with his shizun. Shen Qingqiu felt familiar and powerful emotions assaulting his senses, leaving a bitter taste in his mouth. He hated this. Why couldn’t he get close? Why was he still so weak after all those years? Leaving him weaker than this- this Luo Binghe… Why?!
Noodle’s cries suddenly turned even more heartbreaking. Shen Yuan kept him close, tears streaming down his face as he repeated words of comfort to the dusu snake. It… wasn’t going well. He could feel Noodle’s life essence rapidly going out, slipping between his fingers. But if it was to be his old and first friend last moments, he wanted to accompany him to the end. He suddenly felt a pair of strong, youthful arms encircling him. Shen Yuan smiled despite the tears. His shidi didn’t have to accompany him to this extent. But he did. And he was immensely grateful for it. A gentle warmth spread from his heart, gently soothing his mind.
“A-YUAN!”
Still sitting in the middle of the forest glade, both disciples closed their eyes in unison as a harsh white light enveloped them. The gigantic amount of unstable qi was completely washed away in an instant, leaving only a strange electric atmosphere as the light blinded everyone at the scene.
A short moment passed before the light slowly receded, absorbed by something unknown. Soon after, the palpable charged energy followed.
Shen Yuan felt the weight in his arms disappear, ripping a whimper of desperation from his throat. He opened his eyes, intending to search for Noodle. As he did so, his retina was instantly drowned in an ocean of soft iridescent colors. For a moment, everything seemed to sit completely still, and only the gentle reflections of light dancing in the air like charming little pieces of crystal created an ocean of moving colors. Amidst the different waves, a pair of large reptilian eyes greeted his own calmly, the corner lifting in fondness when Shen Yuan stared back in surprise.
“…Noodle?”
The system’s voice, which he hadn’t heard for a long time, suddenly resonated in his head.
“Carapace ability : 50% damage reduction successful! Applied to user and their companions!” “Qing Jing Peak’s favor +50pts!” “Noodle’s favor +500pts!” “Noodle’s favor [ BONUS ] +???points to •••••••” “Protagonist’s halo compatibility with [*Noodle*] successful. +1000 ally points +0 shielding points!” “Completion of master-level quest +1500pts!” “New skills now available on the user skill tree!” “Congratulations! Please continue to work hard!”
But Shen Yuan wasn’t listening. His body refused to move, remaining frozen in face of the unfamiliar creature. A dragon.
Noodle released a short and sharp breath, ruffling his master’s hair from a distance. Shen Yuan jumped, not expecting the playful attitude from Noodle right after successfully cheating death. He swallowed with difficulty, his emotions still bouncing wildly around in his exhausted mind, and raised a trembling hand, reaching for Noodle’s new fluffy tail hovering above his head. “You’re… so big now.” Shen Yuan’s voice broke on the last syllable. Fat tears quickly filled his eyes, escaping in two seemingly never-ending streams which quickly drenched the collar of his clothes. “Y-You’re- You’re alive…!” He quickly let go of the tail to stand on his knees, throwing himself at Noodle who welcomed him in his embrace. The latter leaned on his master’s sobbing form with a soothing noise, something close to both purring and a low growl. Shen Yuan hid his face on the dragon’s body, both relieved that Noodle somehow survived the painful experience of turning into a dragon and embarrassed at how little he was able to restrain his emotions. Unbeknownst to him, Noddle met another pair of eyes. Luo Binghe silently stared back. Noodle then closed his eyes, bending his neck in a graceful arch as if he was bowing to the young man. Luo Binghe’s eyebrows shot up in shock when he heard two clear words echoing in his mind. “Thank you.”

So Bingqiu AU based on a C novel I started reading that sadly was not finished being translated, which makes me sad SY (who is still a transmigrator, no system) is a disciple at Cang Qiong Mountain Sect when he discovers an injured, unconcious, toddler!LBH and brings him back to the sect to take care of him. SY has no idea why he isn’t being taken care of by the Washerwoman at this point in his life, so it’s a bit concerning. He begs and pleads to be allowed to take care of him, both to his Sect Leader and his Peak Lord. Eventually they consent, but he is 100% responsible for him. He has to make sure he’s cared for while also not slacking on his duties and keeping up with his studies. It’s harder than anything he’s ever done, but he manages.
Eventually it is uncovered that LBH has anterograde amnesia (he can’t form new memories). The Qian Cao Peak Lord gives him medicine so he can learn things subconsciously (he won’t be able to consciously recall it, but, for example, if he learns new cultivation techniques, and he’s in a situation the calls for it, he can do it, but he has no idea he knows it), but can’t otherwise cure the damage.
LBH, for his part, wakes up every day wrapped in the arms of a beautiful boy/man who introduces himself as Shixiong (even though he does all of LBH’s teaching...and he probably starts calling him Shizun at some point) who helps reintroduce him to everything (it was annoying at first but eventually it became routine), trains him, and keeps him safe. (SY has no idea how LBH’s protagonist halo ALLOWED this injury to happen, but LBH is an innocent white lotus for now, and SY is working at trying to find a way to fix his problem). And as his body starts to mature, the subconscious place all his memories are held develops a new feeling: he falls in love with him. This love is renewed and compounded every day) LBH’s protagonist SKILLS still come out in everything. He can still master anything, just most of the time he doesn’t know he can.
LBH one day starts keeping a journal of all the things that happen in a day, and when he encounters Meng Mo he’s actually able to access his own subconscious memories in his dreams, though not while awake. (If this all seems convoluted... i’m actively trying to keep it as close to canon as possible)
The basic idea that I had was that Airplane, during a time when he was really tired of PIDW and wished he could write something else, imagined a “sequel” of sorts where somehow LBH’s universe would reset. And certain villains (the main one being the Old Palace Master) retained their memories of their deaths and decide to take revenge. In the main story, OPM tracked down Su Xiyan’s mongrel son and tried to kill him, just barely failing.
If SY isn’t in the body of SJ then maybe the people who have their memories of the original timeline wonder who he is and why no one remembers him? (Especially if SJ is ONE of those villains! Could be really interesting)

I haven’t really talked about LBH/SY in relation to “pride is not the word I’m looking for” yet and that’s mostly because... I don’t know. I’m not against it, exactly, but there’s still an age difference at an age when those really matter. And the dynamic of any relationship between them here is very, very different. (There’s definitely going to be LBH & SY, though.)
SVSSS would read pretty differently for me (NOT in a good way, I think) if SQQ|SY had been able to clock LBH’s romantic interest at all until late into the story. SY’s fondness of LBH reads to me as simply a deep platonic bond for most of the story (even when SY manages to clock Post-Abyss LBH as sexually/physically attractive). SY took one look at LBH during their first meeting in SVSSS and went, “That’s a CHILD.” Which, imo, actually explains and forgives a lot of SY’s canon obliviousness. Between LBH’s age and their story roles, it makes sense that anything heart-shaped is just not on his fucking radar.
Which is to say: tough luck getting the world’s most oblivious shixiong to notice you sooner than a decade in any AU of mine, Binghe. (Especially with hot, married (potential DILF???) shishu LQG around for SY to stare at.)
And “pride is not the word I’m looking for” isn’t going to be that long. PLUS, I have no idea if I’ll be able to write half-convincing chemistry, so I don’t want to promise anything. I don’t like making promises when I genuinely don’t know.

For the new year writing asks -- 8 and 24?
8. Is there a story idea in your mental vault that you’ve never been brave enough to try writing? Is this the year? Can you tell us about it?
i generate one of these "i wouldn't dare try" ideas like once every other month and they all get dumped into the same shameful portion of my ideas doc... it's the portion of the ideas doc that would require me to write in lbh's pov for the idea to be successful ヾ( ̄▽ ̄)
i have recently been trying to be a bit more brave about this though, like with the chapter in rent a bingge recently. i also have a oneshot planned (after sy shixiong au) that will also be lbh pov, though that one is part of an art exchange so i'll leave out details.
as for an example of one of these forbidden lbh pov ideas that i've had for a long time... i'd really love to do a binggeyuan fic with ace!sy but from the pov of bingge, who up until this point has been taught through experience that the way that people love him is by having sex with him. i've tried outlining what this idea would look like if i wrote it from sy's perspective instead (way easier for me personally) but was never happy with how little it let me play with bingge's messy thoughts, so... who knows, maybe i'll revisit this now that i'm trying to do a bit more binghe pov stuff!
24. By the end of this year, you want your fandom to think of you as “that author who _______.”
it's a bit difficult to communicate "this author wants to bully binghe until he cries and then put him in her mouth for safe keeping" through fanfic so i'll just go with "that author who always does a big binghe crying scene" LMAO

For the crime boss SJ au:
Sqh should also be part of it, he accidentally either outed himself to cat!SY or SJ caught him trying to hide MBJ and decided some freed slaves can go to the demon realm(they could hire the demons to attack their previous owners). I just picture sqh having to do paperwork for every peak, for his king’s kingdom and now for sj’s criminal empire. Alternatively, SJ has already been submitting his crime paperwork through sqh and it takes SY telling him he made fake ids for a bunch of freed slaves for him to notice.
Imagine Shang Qinghua's terrible surprise that the criminal gang that he's trying to negotiate a good trade deal with on behalf of his king... turns out to be his shixiong's criminal group.
Firstly, WTF why does his shixiong run a criminal group? Secondly, WTF why won't he help out a martial sibling out here?
Nope, instead Shen Jiu bullies Shang Qinghua into a terrible deal (for his king that is) and then takes advantage of Shang Qinghua's logistic skills to get better prices for any and all things that his people might need.
(Shen Jiu isn't so foolish as to hand over paperwork - which contains vital information on his criminal empire - to Shang Qinghua. It's not just the intelligence that can be gleaned; a few mistakes here and there can wreck utter havoc on the whole enterprise and destroy some of the active operations.)
Naturally Shen Jiu uses Shang Qinghua to get more freed slaves fake IDs, jobs, and fake work experiences.
