Paintings by Sybil Gibson’s- What inspired her to create art?
Tumblr media
Creating art was never a thing for Sybil Gibson during her college years. However, with the hardships of her life, the only thing she found solace was with creating art. In this blog, we will cover Gibson's early life, what inspired her to create art, and her frequently disappearing nature.
Her Early Life
Sybil Aaron Gibson was born in Dora, Alabama on February 18, 1908 to a prosperous banker, merchant and coal mine operator. She studied biology at Jacksonville State University.
In that university, she had a very unsuccessful experience in an art class which “killed any interest” in creating art. Later she became a teacher at Cordova Elementary School until the mid 1950’s when she moved to Jasper, Alabama.
During her college time, her college art teacher told her she had no talent for painting. This crushed her ambitions. So, she lost interest in painting for much of her adult life.
Gibson was an eccentric artist and an American painter. Her childhood was filled with prosperity, yet her adult life was mostly spent in abject poverty. Sybil Gibson married Hugh Gibson following which she had an emotional breakdown after the birth of her daughter. Soon after their marriage failed after which Sybil fled and left her wealth and family behind for months.
Why did She Start with Art?
In the year 1963, on Thanksgiving Day, when she was 55 years old, she decided to make some Christmas wrapping paper from brown paper bags and was overjoyed with and altered by that experience. After this, she was completely seized with an urge to paint that lasted for three decades.
She once commented, “Good art paper turns me off, while something out of a trash pile turns me on.” She used an unusual technique of washing the glue from the paper bags to flatten them while wet and create her favorite surfaces on which to paint. Sybil Gibson’s fluid brushstrokes imparted a unique style, graceful and minimal with great control of the paint.
Her Paintings
During the initial period, she created pastel artwork of haunting faces, young girls, birds and flora in subtle, dreamlike paintings. According to her, through painting she found a passionate escape from her daily realities and responsibilities. Her paintings mostly portrayed women with a mask-like effect, which evoke a sense of someone hiding from the real world with a dreamlike sweetness.
It is believed that there are about 300 works in existence. However, a lot of her artworks were destroyed by the elements. Gibson was reclusive and extremely modest about her work. She would comment that she felt her work was not worth doing yet she couldn’t stop painting one painting after another once she had begun.
Her disappearance
Sybil Gibson would often disappear if people commended her about her work or sought to buy a work. Her family used to look for her for years. Once they got to know that she was hosting a Museum exhibition in Miami in the early 70’s but she disappeared before the show opened.
So, the exhibition was held, but Sybil was not present there. Then, her family found the place where she used to live was abandoned with her art scattered throughout.
Sybil reacquainted with her adult daughter who had been reared by her parents. Her daughter took her care till she died in a nursing home in Florida in 1995 at the age of 86.
Conclusion
Sybil Gibson’s paintings, mostly of women, have a mask-like effect that evokes the feeling of someone hiding from the real world with a dreamlike sweetness.
Sybil is known for these delicate and ethereal images of haunting faces, young girls, birds and flora that she continued to paint throughout her life using tempera, pastels and pencils on paper bags, newspaper and occasionally on found objects. Her works are in many important collections and are found in a number of Museums today. Learn more about her artworks at Marcia Weber Art Objects.

There’s also a comparison of this to the old one under the cut

Well, Friday night Internet Remix's stream went off with a bang with the first session of Call of Cthulhu Mask of Nyarlathotep and I just had to draw the disaster gang. I wonder how long it will be until one of these characters kicks the bucket? Guess we'll have to wait and see

For Fanwork week 8 You got the “Coyote Skull”! A poorly made taxidermy skull found in the abandoned church. Serves no real purpose aside from being a neat souvenir. Might be helpful down the line, who knows! Would you like to name it? Yes No ABSOLUTELY<–
--- Fucking spectacular. I adore the lil text blurb and the expressions, thanks so much! -Kristen

It's very cool that you open yourself up to prompts a few times a year! Here's one that may be interesting or enjoyable: Sybil Cordova from RwR: CoC on a good, old-fashioned Americana cryptid hunt. Maybe her first one when she was younger and just starting out, before she got involved with the Disaster Gang?
For her 13th birthday, Sybil Cordova wanted what any proper, upstanding young New England woman would want as a herald into her teenage years. A grand party, plenty of well wishes, books to study and gifts to hang up on her walls...
...and, of course, a trip out to Pine Barrens, New Jersey.
A book clutched tightly against her chest, Sybil gazed up at the old farmhouse with eyes somewhere between pensive and elated. Reaching out with one hand, she touched the wooden fence, eyes drawn to the chimney atop the roof.
"You know, they say the mother was a witch," she said, craning her neck backwards to look at Maurice, her family's faithful butler. "And the dad was the devil and not actually her husband."
"Is that so?" he asked with a faint smile, opening the gate and waving a hand forward. "And is that the only version of the tale, Miss Cordova?"
"Of course not," Sybil replied, stepping onto the worn path up with a spring in her step. "Some people think Mother Leeds knew that her thirteenth child would be the devil, and even though it was born looking human, it transformed into a flying goat monster! And then some people think a priest was trying to exorcise a demon from the farmhouse, and that's what the Devil of Leeds is."
Maurice gave another nod, glancing through one of the windows. "Which do you think is correct?"
She thought for a moment, putting her hands against the window lip and peering into the dark front room. "Well, that depends. If they had witch's stairs, then Mother Leeds couldn't be a witch since witches can't go up them...but she still could've gotten cursed and needed a priest to uncurse the house or her...belly...hm..."
"Where do you think it is now?"
Hearing this, Sybil opened her book, pulling out a number of newspaper clippings. "Well, in '09, there were a bunch of sitings all over New Jersey, and some were reported in Pennsylvania, Delaware, even Maryland! Not to mention that sheep have gone missing, it needs to eat sheep or cows or...I don't think it eats people?"
"I would hope not," Maurice said with a chuckle. "People would care a lot more if a person went missing than just a few sheep."
"Maybe people just taste ba-it's immune to bullets!" Sybil exclaimed, pulling out a clipping of a police report. "They shot it and it did nothing! But right, right, back to not eating people. Maybe...maybe we could lure it in with a big dead sheep. Do you think it likes things dead or does it like them more, you know...alive?"
"You're the cryptid expert here, Miss Cordova. I'm just your driver for the day."
Sybil put a hand to her chin, nodding sagely, before turning back towards the car. "Then we need to go ask the farmers! Into town!"
"Very well, Miss Cordova."
As luck would have it, Sybil was never able to learn if the Devil of Leeds preferred fresh meat or already dead meat, and that trip did not result in any sitings of the famed demonic creature. However, for a 13th birthday present, she considered the trip a rousing success.
The Devil of Leeds was the thirteenth child, and she had turned thirteen on the day they arrived in town.
That had to be a bit of good luck. And if not good luck, then at least an omen.
And omens. Omens were interesting.

I...haven’t posted art in awhile...BUT here’s some of the 1920s Disaster Gang with their respective Pokemon, based on a conversation in the IR Fanserver Discord. I initially was gonna leave it at the sketches, but Kit turned out so well  he gets color.

NOVEMBER 14, 1976 A cryptic note was slipped under the Headmaster’s door a few nights ago, vague details of a potential attack scribbled on the torn parchment. It detailed a potential ambush of a nearby village, inhabited with suspected Order sympathizers. While it’s not known whether or not there’s any truth to the note, the Headmaster cannot take it lightly. The recent attacks in and outside of the castle have set everyone on edge, and the safety of the students remains the top priority.
So, after some deliberation and planning, it was announced that the day would be spent in mandatory pairs, and the students would attend an elective of their choosing that has been organized by the professors. After the announcement, the sign up sheets were placed in the Great Hall and students have been paired based on the elective they chose to attend.
Potion Crafting
The following students are to please report to the Potions classroom at 09:00 hours in their pairing and sign in with Professor Slughorn:
Molly Prewett & Gwenog Jones Dinah Zabini & Araminta Valentine Francesca Rosmerta & Sybill Trelawney Rita Skeeter & Tristan Mulciber
The day will be spent crafting Amortentia and one other potion of your pairings choosing - but be warned, Professor Slughorn will be confiscating anything that can be used menacingly!
Banshee Hunting
The following students are to please report to the edge of the Forbidden Forest marked with the red flag in their pairs at 09:00 hours and sign in with Professor Cordova:
Frank Longbottom & Nimue Mackenna Marlene McKinnon & Grace Flint Peter Pettigrew & Mack Yaxley Millicent Bagnold & Dorcas Meadowes Paris Avery & Fabian Prewett
Don’t go using all of your laughing potion at once! Your pairings are to scare the small group of banshees that has taken to an area of the Forbidden Forest. It’s important to stick with your partner, Cordova will be charming all of your shoes beforehand so she will know if you’ve decided to part ways.
Botany
The following students are to please report to the edge of the Forbidden Forest marked with the blue flag in their pairs at 09:00 hours and sign in with Professor Sprout:
Fiona Zabini & Morgana Killick Lorenzo De Rose & Lorcan d’Eath Kingsley Shacklebolt & Mason Macdonald Ellerie Kirikas & Narcissa Black Antonin Dolohov & Alice Fortescue Laisren Mackenna & Walden Macnair
Remember not to struggle against the Devil’s Snare! Professor Sprout wishes to remind students to wait for their partner to sink through before leaving the room in the dungeons. Remember not to dawdle on your way back to the forest, as the professor has the paintings reporting back to her about any tomfoolery.
Mermaid Observing
The following students are to report to the Black Lake in their pairings at 0900 and sign in with Professor Kettleburn:
Jackson Flint & Gilderoy Lockhart Ramona d’Eath & Benjy Fenwick Indiana Nott & Nikoli Gallagher Andromeda Black & Antigone Graves Valerie Petrov & James Potter
Professor Kettleburn would like to stress that the merepeople are only to be studied and not touched. He will be watching the pairings from the underwater observatory. Any students not following the rules will be spending the next week de-gnoming the gardens during detention.
Tea Leaf Reading
The following students are to please report to the Divination classroom at 0900 in their pairs and report to Professor Weaver:
Mary Macdonald & Pandora Duport Seraphina Parkinson & Doris Purkiss
Pairings will be handed a book to decipher their partner’s leaves mean. Try not to drop your teacups if you find out some disturbing news from your reading. Professor Weaver is running low on supply.
OOC: While this event is for fun and should lead to some interesting situations, we would like to remind everyone that these threads should take priority! We are a-okay with rapid replies to your pairings! We hope you all enjoy this and the things we have to come! This event will run until friday the 6th, followed by our weekend discord event.
