hello! i'm starting a small series of ficlets set in the LCU. to catch up, see here!
"Loki, dearest, step out of the kitchen."
To any guest who might have been stood with Mobius in the kitchen, or perhaps sitting at the dining table tucked in the corner, there would be no reason to warn your (alarmingly clingy) roommate out of the room. In fact, to any outside observer, Mobius would look like he was talking to himself.
To him, though, his sneaky partner is perhaps less sneaky then they think. He sees the calendar that Loki had bought as a joke (The Best of Jetskis, 1992) shift just slightly, the door swinging just a few inches in a non-existant breeze.
It was nearing a year since Mobius had retired to a beach cottage, Loki along with him. Even taking their few inevitable arguments into account (and the time Mobius got third degree sunburn), it had easily been the best year of his life.
There were a few things, though, that they had quickly learnt about each other. Loki, for example, was entirely unable to sit still for more than a few hours at a time, unless there was good reason. Fishing was fine, they had discovered, but sunbathing got old very quickly.
So, they had both picked up hobbies to fill the time. Mobius had his water sports - the jet ski, of course, but he had also tried his hand at surfing and a handful of other related activities - and he loved reading the crappy novels he picked up from the nearby thrift shop. By now, he had amassed quite the collection, all of them stored alphabetically on the row of shelves Loki had put up for him.
Loki, however, had yet to settle on one hobby. He had tried everything - crocheting, painting, rollerskating, jogging, even darts, briefly - and he had given up on all of them in less than a week. Baking had lasted the longest of them all (a whole fortnight!) but had ended, rather unfortunately, with the kitchen on fire.
Hence, Lokis being banned from cooking.
Mobius sighs, stirring the pot of pasta he's cooking. "You don't have to hide from me. I know where your snack stash is anyway."
Loki appears behind him, reaching behind the washing machine and scowling. "I'll have to move it again."
"Why do you even bother?" Mobius asks. "It's not like I can stop you from eating Oreos constantly."
"You always give me this look," Loki complains. It's very judgemental. You remind me of my mother."
Mobius raises an eyebrow, swatting Loki with his wooden spoon. "Take that back, or I wont cook for a week."
Loki raises his hands in defeat. "Fine. But that threat is just as bad for you as it is-"
"I know. It's called a joke, dear."
And so they continue squabbling, a smile on both of their faces, as Mobius finishes cooking. It's nearly been a year in their home, and yet he couldn't imagine being anywhere (or anywhen) else.
the end
[I do not own the rights to Loki. See here for more details.]

Insys Founder Goes on Trial in Opioid Prosecution First
In the first prosecution of a pharmaceutical company chief executive tied to the national opioid epidemic, Insys Therapeutics Inc. founder John Kapoor and four others went on trial in Boston on Monday on racketeering and conspiracy charges, Bloomberg reports. Prosecutors have accused the defendants of using speaker fees to doctors to ramp up sales of the painkiller Sybsys, and then lying to insurers about which patients got the drug. Insys reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that more than 900 people died while taking Subsys since it was approved in 2012.
Kapoor’s lawyer, Beth Wilkinson, told the jury in her opening statement that Kapoor didn’t know underlings cut side deals with doctors who got fees for writing prescriptions for the opioid-based drug. She blamed Alec Burlakoff, a former Insys sales executive, for “all the criminal activities.” Burlakoff and former CEO Michael Babich will be the government’s star witnesses in a trial that may last more than three months. Burlakoff pleaded guilty to the racketeering and conspiracy charges; Babich to conspiracy and mail fraud.
