i think about the droid/automaton temple guardians a lot. like--
they aren't alive, but they aren't not alive, either. they have varying degrees of sentience. they remember the jedi, some of them outlive the purge, knowing the jedi are gone save for whatever knowledge they've squirreled away in their memory banks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
cator, the droid guarding the jedi temple archives with jocasta nu, had a personality. he was serious about protecting and sheltering the jedi's knowledge and their history, so dedicated that he stood up to darth vader in an attempt to keep the list of force-sensitive children safe. sure, it was in his protocol to guard the archives, but he didn't have to care, or love it, or want to do this; we see many droids across star wars who do not give a single shit about their programmed duties, while still executing them.
but cator works hard, diligently and carefully, because cator loved his work, and he loved the jedi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
T0-B1 loved his jedi master so much! and his master loved him so much that he powered T0-B1 with the kyber crystal from his lightsaber! of course jedi wants to be a jedi. of course he wants to fight and protect and preserve life, not because he was programmed for it, because he wasn't, but because he wants to honor the man who gave his life to save him -- him, a "meaningless droid"!
then there are the tomb guardians on zeffo.
thousands upon thousands of years they've stood guard over the secrets of their creators, a species so powerful and gifted with the force that they were their own undoing. do the guardians know they're guarding tombs, or do they believe their masters will return some day from the other side of the veil, and the guardians will be there, waiting, stalwart sentinels ready to welcome them home? if they do know, did they mourn? could they have walked away from their posts but instead chose to stay, to keep the zeffo graves from being desecrated, because they'd rather the world forget their masters than allow them to suffer indignity?
did the guardians love the zeffo? surely they must have, without question.
the real question is: did the zeffo who whispered metal ore from the stone and gave them shape, gave them sentience, gave them purpose, love them back? they must have, in the way we all love the work of our hands.
but perhaps the most pressing question is:
long after their circuitry should have degraded, their power cores cracked and dripped empty, their shiny metal carapaces rusted off like so much disease -- what could it be that keeps these machines moving but their love for those who no longer exist anywhere but their memory?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
how could you not love and be loved by something that made you, purposefully, in its image?????????

the astroboy-esque trope of the scientist and the robot child. taking endless care and maintenance to continue rebuilding and readjusting the body, letting the kid grow as if they’re flesh and blood. and the scientist may have had a distinct purpose for this machine in the beginning but now that’s their child. of their own making. yeah i eat that shit up

Every time I see something about the cute little droid child in Visions, affectionately named T0-B1, I will say his name exactly like the little mouse girl in The Great Mouse Detective.

In Visions Remembered, I go through each Star Wars: Visions short to talk about why it's great. T0-B1 is cute on the surface, but it has a much deeper and more tragically beautiful story underneath. Read about it over on Dork Side of the Force

Talking with @rogueleader14 about our respective Star Wars AUs made me decide to share more characters who exist in it, as well as their stories. As I've alluded to elsewhere, this AU draws on all corners of Star Wars canon, be it Disney, Legends, LEGO, or in this case, Visions. I finally got around to watching both seasons this year, and I jumped at the chance to incorporate some of the characters in my AU. These are the micros I've made so far for these characters. Story details under the cut. All of them are in the post-Return of the Jedi setting.
-The Ronin, real name Douga Heian, was a child during the Clone Wars, his Force-sensitivity never manifesting until later in life. By the time that happened, the Empire had risen and he was picked up by the Inquisitorious rather than the Jedi. Though a promising talent and initially loyal to the Empire, he gradually became more aware of the Empire's corruption and went awol, laying low and even starting a family. After Palptaine's death at Endor, former Inquisitors and other Imperial Dark Jedi began running amok as warlords and independent raiders, prompting Douga to come out of hiding and hunt down his former contemporaries.
*I chose his name by combining Kamikaze Douga, the animation company that made The Duel, and the Heian period of Japan (794 to 1185), where the term ronin came from.
-Am and Karre's story is mostly the same, albeit toned down CONSIDERABLY. Here, their creation was overseen by Sebban Keto, a character from a roleplaying game who is descended from Aleema and Sataal Keto from the Tales of the Jedi comics. Sebban intended to revitalize the Krath cult with the twins at the head, but Karre's defection puts those plans on hold. Karre steadily grows into more of a true Jedi as he journeys on his own, while striving to save his sister from the dark path.
*Karre wields a dual-phase lightsaber with a unique gradient crystal. While obviously nowhere near as big as in the short (closer to Pong Krell's blades for reference), it still grows much longer and thicker, enabling a greatsword style of combat.
*Am initially only carried her two normal lightsabers, but installed the prosthetic arms and built the extra four after Karre went rogue.
-F, real name Ephalline Kinema (also taken from the name of the studio), is mostly intact for her story in the Village Bride. Specifically, her feet were maimed while escaping Order 66, forcing her and her master to take refuge for medical treatment. Her ridiculous high heels are actually prosthetics here. Ephalline was still recovering when Darth Vader tracked her master down, and she was forced to watch helplessly as he was cut down. Post-Village Bride, F wanders the galaxy to do good wherever she can, eventually leading her to Tao...
-Lop and Ocho's story is also unchanged. Several years later, Ocho has risen to be the Imperial magistrate of her homeworld, while Lop has fallen in with fellow Lepi smuggler Jaxxon T. Tumperakki to make ends meet. During one of their runs, they bump into F, who recognizes Lop's potential as a Jedi and offers to train her. This development, combined with Ocho's difficulties in arresting her sister (due in no small part to her conflicting loyalties), leads to the Empire sending an Inquisitor to "help out". Lop eventually completes her training, succedes in getting through to Ocho, and joins the New Jedi Order.
-Anni Kalfus and Julan Van Reeple enroll in a New Republic flight academy as teenagers before joining the fleet post graduation. Their rivalry continues into their service, even as they find themselves assigned to the same flight group. Thankfully, the demands of military service and the mentorship of General Thane Kyrell goes a long way towards improving their relationship. By the time of the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, the two are genuine friends and lead their own squadron with distinction.
-Jay and T0-B1 both also exist around this time period, while the events of In the Stars, Bandits of Golak, The Spy Dancer, and The Pit happen during Imperial rule.
-The Elder takes place pre-Phantom Menace
-Daal and the Sith Mother are part of the Banite line.
-Sith and Journey to the Dark Head are during the New Sith Wars, and Aau's Song is shortly after the Battle of Ruusan.
-I'm debating on where The Ninth Jedi would go in the timeline, while Akakiri is an in-universe fable.

Matsuo Ohno (1930-2022)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source: AF Plan (Twitter; AF_Plan_info), Forced Exposure
Matsuo Ohno, the sound designer for the 1960s Astro Boy anime and the 1964 Astro Boy movie Hero of Space, passed away on December 19, 2022 at 7:28 AM at the age of 92.
The website Forced Exposure gives a summary of Matsuo Ohno’s life growing up and his formative years:
Matsuo Ohno was responsible for the sound design of a broad range of film, television, and radio soundtracks, most famously the animation series Astro Boy which he began working on in 1963 together with his assistant, Takehisa Kosugi.
Ohno was born in the heavily-populated Kanda district of central Tokyo in 1930 and was heavily affected by the repeated bombing raids on the city enacted in World War II, which took place during his formative years. After the war, deeply motivated by philosophy and surrealism, he was largely unaffected by popular music [...].
Ohno began immersing himself in the realm of sound effects while working with the Bungaku-za modernist theatre troupe and he performed a similar function at NHK, Japan's national broadcasting corporation, but became so frustrated by the rigidity of the restrictions imposed on him there that he quit his prestigious post at the broadcaster, although his skills were such that he remained in high demand as a freelancer, which allowed him to refine his sound effects techniques with evolving analogue synthesizers.
Ohno worked on the sound effects in the 1960s Astro Boy anime, which includes Atom’s squeaky boots.
Ohno was active up until his death in 2022, even working on the sound design for the T0-B1 episode in Star Wars: Visions in 2021 which was heavily influenced by Astro Boy.

Your favorite episodes from SW Visions S1 and S2?
ooooh it's a tough one!!!! I really enjoy visions overall, so this is not to say I disliked the other ones
SWV1:
the village bride my best beloved!!!!! rewired something in my brain chemistry I think. themes?? immaculate. music??? impeccable. animation?? gorgeous.
T0-B1 this one grew on me!! at first I thought it was whimsical and cute because of the animation but the more I think about it,,,, his character arc,,,, the implication that he represented a lost padawan,,,, the response to loss being "I want to heal the planet like he wanted to",,,,, hhhhhhhhg
the elder I just love this master-padawan duo.
SWV2:
the spy dancer !!!!! something about this season's focus on parents and children, on connection and separation, on the difference between letting your child go because you love them and having your child ripped from you because you love them,,,,, hhhh. also this was really pretty
screecher's reach this one haunts me emotionally. "don't look back, right?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
aau's song she just. she sing!!!! she's so cute!!!! and I love the Jedi's design!
