fic like therapy: Spudcity’s How to mend with gold

Summary: Taehyung has a list of things to do to become a better person, and that's how he ends up volunteering at a queer youth centre. There’s only one problem – Yoongi works there. The same Yoongi who rejected him years ago and hasn’t given him the time of day since.

Why it resonates: Written in Taehyung's pov, the text captures the dizzying effort to reconcile one’s murky subjective experience with contrary evidence in other parties’ actions and words. This Taehyung is used to negotiating his social reality, deferring to others when they aren't interested in his perspective and lying when reframing isn't enough to keep it pleasant. Some of these discrepancies are deliberate constructions (influencer image, gaslighting “friend”, impossible mother), others are a misunderstanding or the result of broken self esteem. Taehyung starts in crisis, isolated by these tactics and unable to understand his own hurt. Through the fic, Taehyung learns how to trust himself and others by finding a safer way to live and accepting help from those who care.

Personally: A lot of Tae’s struggles feel familiar. The mindfuck of people feeling entitled to your body, the impulse to smooth over failings that don't seem justifiable, and the emotional wall he has built to keep even good friends safe from his “too much” mess. It's soothing to watch Taehyung break this all down, bit by bit, and heal. Especially sweet is Yoongi’s support, first grudgingly and then gently offering the tools and space for Taehyung to find his feet. Also every time a weird Taehyung is loved for his whole self, my heart grows three sizes.

Retreat.

Jimin knows his mother is fragile, she’s been through a lot. Being the wife of the most powerful men in the country isn’t an easy task. She wasn’t always like this though, he heard stories from family friends about how stubborn she was, how nobody could ever make deals better than her, he saw pictures of her looking proud and fearless.

Now she’s just the shadows of the woman she once was. Jimin heard what happen to her, he grew up surrounded by the tale of how she almost die because of the Mins. He’s been hide and over protected all his life for that very reason, she never been the same after what happened. It makes Jimin sad to not have known her before, a little envious of his brother and father because they had her and he didn’t. Sometimes he’s just too angry of the way he was treated because of her mental state, he just hates how weak she is and how it affected his whole life. Because of it all, Jimin isn’t even a real person, he has a fake surname; while his brother is always on the spotlight he can’t never be shown next to his family, he can never trust anyone. He felt like a glass doll all his childhood because of the way they kept him away from everything possibly dangerous.

He kind of hope nobody told his mother about how he's been seeing an unknown boy, how he’s been running away from security all the time. She would probably have a break down.

Today he’ll go see her, she’s not leaving in their house in the city anymore. She has a nice house in the country side not too far away but far enough to have some tranquility. It’s good. She’s good, obsessing over her garden instead of her son. He’ll go and have a nice time with her, forget their trouble and hope she won’t stress about him leaving at night time.

He was happy about spending some quality time with his mother in that beautiful house of hers.

He didn’t expect Namjoon to be at his mother’s house.

He didn’t expect Taehyung to be with him.

He certainly didn’t in a million years expect to find his big brother pining his best friend against a wall, kissing him.

The Treaty of Reviel, Jacob’s Story

“Criston, tonight I’m coming to you, not as a political commentator but as a citizen of the same kingdom that you are a part of. The same kingdom split from Venthia hundreds of years ago. The same kingdom that prides itself on the freedoms written in our charter and that is supported by our treaty that gave us the right to be our own entity. I’m here to speak as a regular person to you, another regular person. I’m here to tell you that I am deeply worried about the state of our nation.

We’ve noticed a sharp and quite scary decline in the health of our king. For years, we’ve made light of his majesty’s comments about him surpassing his retirement age. But when he finally made it to said age, he didn’t pass down the crown to Prince Bae TaekJo, stating that he ‘... still had much to do,’ and” ... wasn’t feeling tired yet.’ And we let him.

We let the King continue on his political path along with his constituents in assembly. The people were fine with it. We hadn’t been led completely astray by our government, even though they have been under some scrutiny by a younger politically aware demographic, one that I tend to agree with from time to time. But from their past actions, Cristonians have placed their trust in our monarch and assembly.

But now, something has changed. King Jeongtae has been constantly in and out of the hospital since last winter and although we have been informed by the royal press that these were check up and preventative care visits, we all know that this is anything put normal. But we won’t speculate on his health. There is no need to alarm the people and if he were to be ill, the nation worrying about him would make him feel any better.

This is not the scary part. No, what has truly shaken me to my core is the display of disheartening behavior and political manipulation coming from members of the assembly, even from the royal family.

It’s rumored that the King is going to announce his official retirement during the Annual Royal Winter Ball, which it is tradition for the Royal Family. But with the untimely passing of Prince TaekJo, may his soul rest in peace, the crown will be passed on to his only son Prince Bae Jacob. Apparently, this hasn’t sat well with many people arguing that he is too young to take the throne.

A quote from Chief Assembly member, Duke of North Bowen, Marshall Robertson, when asked if he is ready for the exchanging of the throne he had this said, ‘… To be quite frank with you, no. He [Prince Jacob] is a child. My job and status is not to be reduced to the babysitter of a prince who has no concept of Criston’s government. We are older men, grown men, we’ve lived our lives among the people before we stepped foot into the assembly. That boy [Prince Jacob] will never understand the people like we do.’

Quiet harsh words from someone of the royal assembly, afterwards he issued an apology statement but stuck to the sentiment behind his words that the crown prince is far removed from his people. Many others have agreed with the duke and expressed similar statements such as the Duke of Anneluit and Marquis of Lesbramp. The most shocking person to agree with the statement, however, was the prince’s own uncle, Prince TaeJoon. After retweeting a video of Duke Robertson on his own social media account, Prince TaeJoon was asked to clarify his stance; he only gave this as a response, ‘… I, too, want my father to rest. He is getting older and I want him to enjoy his elder years of life, after serving Criston for over 60 years. However, I can’t help but agree that my nephew could possibly be too young for the job at hand.’

This is a complete disregard for the laws that were set for our nation hundreds of years ago. The most worrying is that we’ve heard nothing from the throne on this matter. They are letting this dismay permeate the masses and refuse to speak up on it. When spotted at an annual fundraising event, we tried to get a response from the crown prince himself. But before the prince could answer security came and pushed us away. We did however, overhear someone, most likely an advisor to Prince Jacob, tell him to not answer any question regarding the topic.

What are they hiding? What is happening within the castle walls? This is not how our nation operates with secrets. I’m asking you to support our Crown Prince and stay by his side because for the first time I truly feel that our kingdom’s future is in jeopardy.

(Long Pause)

I have to move on. I don’t think I can talk about this anymore tonight …”

Taehyung always knew that his life propose was to take care of someone else’s. Since the day he was born he was train to protect, he learned everything from martial art to hacking.

He was content with that fact, especially when he met Jimin.

He was assigned to Jimin when they were kids; Jimin was special, he needed extra care and Taehyung gladly gave him. They became best friends, it was not just a job, Jimin was the most important person in his life.

Of course he also knew Namjoon, everybody did. The perfect heir. He never hang around with Taehyung, he had special alone time with Jimin since they were family. But since Jimin loved his brother very much, Taehyung cared for him too. It’s not until Jimin started messing around that they really had some time together, he had an hard time keeping track of his best friend when he turned 18 and Namjoon gradually loose the bound he use to share with his little brother. So the heir started to rely on the guard, they became close. Too close.

Taehyung is pretty sure he was never supposed to fall for Kim Namjoon. Then again he wasn’t supposed to have sex with him in the first place. But they were both lonely, spending night awake together worrying over Jimin while he was rebelling against that life he didn’t wanted.

It just happened.

Once, twice, a hundred time maybe.

Namjoon said nobody should know so Taehyung kept it a secret, they agreed it was just sex so Taehyung kept his feelings aside.

Jimin will always be his priority but every time Namjoon call for him, Taehyung will answer.
