Pretty boy used to be A Face that would come up in his mind when he thought of the term. There was no specifics in mind, just like. Pretty Boy. Pretty boy! hannigram analysis from the perspective of my thesis:

To start things off, my thesis is on the mediating role that self esteem has on the relationship between attachment style and self disclosure (i need as many participants as i can get so if you have the time pls complete my questionnaire https://forms.gle/MEz9w7dWGiscX3az7) and here's how that relates to Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter:

Hannibal has a self esteem that is through the rough, the man thinks he is a God. While Will also has high self esteem (he believes in his ability to catch criminals and knows he is the best at what he does even if it affects his mental state), his doesn’t quite border on narcissism.

Putting aside any antisocial personality disorder he might or might not have, I would say that Hannibal has avoidant attachment style

-He does not get close to people, even his relationship with Will takes a lot of time to get to the point where he lets Will see him

-His extreme independence and self reliance, wears a person suit and leads a separate life that he shares with no one else

On the other hand, I believe that Will has disorganised attachment style (which is probably due to the way he is portrayed to have an “empathy disorder”):

-He shows erratic patterns of seeking and avoiding intimacy and has challenges in emotional regulation: he does want closer connections to the people around him but also often draws back before managing to form them (kissing Alana but then telling Hannibal that he mostly did it because he needed to feel in control of something, reluctantly allowing Hannibal access to his mind and uhh almost killing him when betrayed, feeling paternal toward Abigail and wanting to protect her but keeping his distance from her)

In terms of self-disclosure I think both Hannibal and Will would rank remarkably low on the scale if you look at their interactions with any person other than each other so I will just talk about them together because that’s more fun! They go from Will refusing to socialise with Hannibal in the first episode and Hannibal seeing Will as a fun experiment to them revealing the darkest and most intimate parts to each other.  There is no getting closer to someone than not knowing where one of you ends and the other begins am I right haha.

Now to finish it all off, this is how I think all of these different aspects about Will and Hannibal tie in with their relationship: Hannibal’s well rounded high self esteem and charm makes Will trust Hannibal with his well being and in turn I believe that Hannibal is attracted, on an intellectual (and physical lmao) level, to Will’s confidence and abilities. In terms of attachment, Hannibal starts by taking advantage of Will’s need for an emotional connection and moulds his image to fit what Will is looking for: a strong person that doesn’t waver in the face of his darkness which is able to bring him back to the surface when he feels like drowning. Overall their relationship is marked by betrayals, testing and crossing boundaries, violence and pain but none of that takes away from their deep connection; whether interpreted as love, obsession or toxic co-dependency, it can’t be denied that they become the most unguarded and authentic version of themselves when they are together.

How'd you first get interested in the classics in the first place? What was your gateway?

god I can't really remember if there was a specific first. I grew up watching documentaries and reading history centric non fiction, so it feels like I've been aware of it forever, it's just that my interest in engaging with it varies. like, periodically I hit a very hostile negative with the classics and it takes a lightning strike of something special for me to get back into it. this current run of classics related fuckery is sponsored by machiavelli!

uhhhh. maybe assassins creed? when the conspirators try to use the shroud on brutus to resurrect him, and it fails, the body moves but there's no life, and they call it a second death?

that might've been the first time I realized that all of this could be narratively interesting and fun to play with. I have spent YEARS discussing the implications of this with other asscreed friends, and we applied way too much history to all of that.

that was around the time I was in middle/first year of highschool, and the iliad/odyssey were part of the literature curriculum, along with oedipus rex, antigone, and some other tragedies. and ofc dante made me obsessed with the historical virgil.

in conclusion: all of this is a ball of yarn, but probably assassins creed.

edit: tbh it could be that my teacher for the iliad/odyssey/etc also had us watch sword and sandal adaptions of myths. I like groovy visuals, and sword and sandal movies had visuals for days.
