I’m not really one for #quotes or #waxing #poetic about the #human condition or being #overdramatic but this speaks to me so loudly. It’s so clear. The difference between a #boy and a #man or a #girl and a #woman is the ability to take a look in the mirror and understand that your problems stem from yourself. Not the people around you. Playing the #blame #game tells me all I need to know about a person. Take some personal inventory and #learn from your #mistakes and learn how to be better because the people you blame now are the only people you will be forced to count on. PUTAIN, 15 ans!

Quand on y pense, depuis que l’homme tape sur des bambous (et pince des cordes en boyau de mouton), le néo-métal est peut-être le genre musical qui a le plus vite sombré aux oubliettes après son invention. Propulsé dans les gourdines d’ados en mal de bien-être au milieu des 90s, la zik d’énervés en sapes de racaillou a été tendance pendant en gros quoi, une décennie? avant Et quel héritage il nous laisse: allez, en arrondissant les angles une vingtaine d’albums fondateurs, le Hellfest et 2-3 leaders charismatiques étouffés dans leur vomi après une nuit d’excès. C’est ce qui rend la chronologie de ‘Take a look in the mirror’, sixième opus de Korn - incontestablement un des leaders du ‘nu-metal’ - intéressante. Et ce serait un peu expéditif d’envoyer le disque au pilon, en même temps que la montagne de bouses néo-métal produite après l’an 2000. 2003: la locomotive du néo-métal Korn (KoRn avec un R retourné, pour les ‘hardcore fans’) a selon toute vraisemblance chopé le melon, à force d’être cité comme référence ultime par les boys band à grosses guitares qui veulent eux aussi une place au soleil. Avec ‘Untouchables’, son effort précédent, ça semble une affaire entendue que le quintet à dreadlocks va progressivement s’éloigner du métal pour entrer dans l’ère prometteuse du rock progressif:

[Jonathan « Jon » Davis]: « et Pan! dans tes dents Chino Moreno, tu peux aller te rhabiller toi et ton ‘White pony’! »

Sauf que non en fait.

Le sixième album a pris pas mal de ‘korn kids’ à contrepied. Déjà, par sa date de sortie, un an après ‘Untouchables’, là où Korn nous avait habitués a un opus tous les 2 ans. Ensuite, parce que l’évolution mélodique n’est finalement pas au rendez-vous. Et tant mieux si les papes du néo-métal peuvent déjouer les pronostics. Certes, la galette se plante par moments en beauté. Coucou le single ‘Did my time’ qui, pour rappel, a terminé sur le soundtrack du gros nanar blockbuster Tomb Raider. Malgré un riff de guitare et de basse annonciateur d’un joyeux chaos musical, le tout retombe comme un soufflet dès le refrain con comme la Lune, puis un pont ‘WTF’ dont le seul intérêt semble être d’allonger la sauce. Vite écrémés aussi, ‘Deep inside’ et ‘I’m done’, gaulés comme ma tante... et c’est pas un compliment! En résumé, quand ça traîne en longueur, on se fait chier. A l’exception peut-être de ’Alive’, dont l’alternance couplet éructé-refrain chanté rend un bel hommage aux premiers disques du groupe. L’expérimental n’a jamais trop réussi à Korn, comme devait le confirmer les fricotages du groupe avec le dub-step quelques disques plus tard.

[Jon]: - « Je vais te dire, chez KoRn, on fait pas de la soupe instantanée, on explose les codes du métal, limite sur ‘Did my time’ on fait du néo-métal progressif, tu vois ».

[La Sagesse]: - « Hmmmm hmmm... » (ou, dans sa version moins enrobée: « ta gueule, Jon »)

Non mon Jon, assez de bullsh*t, le seul reflet de Korn qu’on aime voir, c’est celui qui ne garde QUE l’essentiel. Une basse hip-hop bien kiffante entre les percus, des riffs bidouillés pour sonner glauques à souhait, le chant plein de tension de Mister Davis. ‘Right Now’ et ‘Break some off’, qui démarrent les hostilités sur une note enragée, sont la synthèse parfaite. Plus loin, on se surprendra à scander les paroles robotiques de ‘Y’all want a single’, ou le refrain entêtant de ‘Let’s do this now’, morceau qui donne l’impression d’être joué en accéléré, après une intro faussement calme à la cornemuse. A retenir aussi, le track 8, ‘Play me’: rarement un phrasé hip-hop aura été autant en osmose avec l’orchestration métal. La seule fusion que Korn ait jamais réussi à maitriser, en vérité.

Au final, ‘Take a look in the mirror’ est un testament sonore indispensable pour qui a déjà headbangué nerveusement sur du néo-métal: on l’aime, quand il procure toute l’énergie que peu de groupes comme Korn savent condenser; on le déteste, lorsqu’il trahit l’obsession du groupe de vouloir se réinventer et s’hybrider à tout ce qui bouge, surtout le derniers sample ou la dernière sonorité en vogue.

‘Right now’, c’est du malaise, de l’humour bien noir, des lyrics balancés en pleine poire plutôt que susurrés à l’oreille... Bref, tout ce pour quoi on aime Korn!
