horror sub-genres • anthology horror
horror anthology films have existed since the era of silent movies, offering a collection of at least three short horror films, each with a unique premise and a different cast, but sometimes the stories will tie in with each other to create a much bigger story.

I needed to kill some time tonight so I watched Tales from the Hood (1995) since it’s currently free on Tubi and, dang, was it right up my ally. It’s campy. It’s serious. It’s Gothic. It’s modern. It was perfect to watch as Halloween looms around the corner.
Now, this movie might not be everyone’s cup of tea. It deals with some very serious topics like racism, police brutality, drug abuse, domestic violence, & gang violence. Lots of foul language as well. Also, there is a prolonged strobe effect starting around 1:24:00 (when Crazy K is put in the sensory deprivation chamber). Lastly, while I thought the practical effects were rather good, the effects done by computer are more, let’s say, par for the 90’s.
With all that out of the way, if you can stomach it this movie is really fun. It’s a frame story and an anthology with a twist ending. The combination of modern & classic styles really sells the film in my opinion. The soundtrack utilizes both spooky classical music along with gangsta rap to set the mood. The visuals are a mix of typical American urban and suburban environments & Gothic tropes like funeral homes, cemeteries with undead, possessed vintage dolls, or laboratory-asylum-dungeons. Blood and gore is present, but not egregiously so. It’s more the kind of horror movie that pulls you in with its thrills or leaves you with something to think about after the plots are resolved than the kind that relies on the disgust factor to get a reaction from its audience. Overall, 10/10 would watch again.
