It All Comes Back Around Again

“Alright, here we are!” Deeks announced, pulling into Julia’s driveway. Roberta’s car was already parked to the right. He looked over the driver’s seat into the back where Caleb and Sofia were facing backwards, holding hands in the small space between their seats.

“You ready to see Gradma Deeks and Grandma Julia?” Kensi asked.

“Duwi!” Caleb shouted, his little legs kicking excitedly as Julia more quietly exclaimed, “Dama!”

In their mysterious twin toddler ways, Caleb and Sophia had simultaneously christened the grandmas with their own unique versions of their names. It wasn’t clear if the choices were merely based on convenience and ease of pronunciation, or some other reason adults would never be able to fathom.

“Tayeb out!” Caleb requested when Kensi opened his door, reaching for her. Sophia patiently waited while Deeks unbuckled her seat belt, helpfully lifting her arms so he could pick her up.

He didn’t set her down once she was out thought, having learned that she was a little escape artist, and would likely take off as soon as he let go.

“See doddy pease?” she asked, pointing towards the fenced in back yard.

“Yep, I bet Grandma Julia has Ginger outside,” Deeks replied. He tucked a light brown curl behind Sophia’s ear. “Remember, no sitting on the dog. Ok?”

“Tay.”

Following the sound of Roberta’s distinctive laugh, Kensi and Deeks walked to the backyard, free hands linked while they each held a kiddo in the other arm.

When they walked through the side gate, Julia and Roberta were sitting at the glass topped table with what looked like cocktails.

“Dama!” Sophia shouted excitedly, scrambling down from Deeks’ arms, and running as fast as her little legs could take her to Julia and Roberta. Caleb was a few steps behind, dragging Kensi along with him. In order to keep up, Kensi had to run at an awkward crouched jog.

“Oh, my babies!” Julia said, clasping her hands to her chest as the twins slammed into her and Roberta’s legs. Caleb hugged her legs, leaving a wet attempt at a kiss on her knee before moving.

“Get up here, kiddo,” Roberta said. Caleb bounced on his tiny sneakered feet until she picked him up.

“Me up?” Sophia asked, tugging at the hem of Julia’s cardigan.

“Of course, my beautiful Sophia. I missed you.” Sophia didn’t respond verbally, but seemed to get the gist of Julia’s words, hugging her around the neck.

Deeks watched them, heart nearly bursting at the sight of their moms so content. He saw Kensi with a similar gleam in her eyes.

“I remember when Kensi was this age,” Julia reminisced once they were all settled, fondness lighting every feature as she balanced Sophia on her thighs. “She would sneak into the kitchen where we kept little candies and treats in a drawer. I would catch her with a sucker or chocolate in her little hand and she’d put the whole thing, wrapper and all, in her mouth. Whenever it got quiet, I knew where I could find my Kensi.

“So-ee tandy!” Sophia announced, attention caught by one of her favorite things. When she didn’t see any evidence of candy or other sweets, she turned back to Julia with a little huff and started patting her cheeks.

“Ah, so not much has changed in 40 years,” Deeks teased, chin tipped up as he grinned at Kensi.

“Thanks so much, mom,” Kensk said wryly. “Alright, give me a baby Deeks story, Roberta. It’s only fair.”

Deeks made a noise of objection. “Oh, I think there are more than enough stories about me during my tender childhood years floating around.”

“Marty was a happy little baby. He loved to talk,” Roberta shared gladly. She nodded to Caleb, who was standing beside Julia’s chair now, speaking to Sophia in a mixture of English, Spanish, and baby jargon.

“You were saying,” Kensi drawled at Deeks.

“Fine, fine. I concede, we made mini-me’s.”

“When he was about a year and a half, I got a phone call that took longer then I expected. By the time I finished, I hear all this wailing coming from the bathroom,” Roberta continued, clearly relishing the story. Deeks bore it with a resigned sigh, having heard this one before.

“I think he was trying to sing. Anyway, I get in there and what do you think my little Martin’s doing? Washing the bath towels in the toilet.”

Kensi snorted and narrowly avoided spraying the table with a mouthful of seltzer. Sophia reached over to helpfully pat her on the back.

“Thanks, sweetie,” Kensi choked.

“Really, mama? You had to pick that story? You could have told about the time I made you a bouquet of dandelions or attempted to eat an entire carton of ice cream.”

“Aw, I think it was cute.” Kensi grinned up at him, rubbing his shoulder. “Now I know where your neat freak tendencies come from. Started when you were just a little baby. Though fortunately now you use the washing machine.

“You’re hilarious.”

“I love hearing all these stories,” Julia said.

Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Jones stood on the roof of an abandoned building, gazing at the city skyline illuminated by the night lights. The moon was shining brightly, and as they felt ready to face whatever threat was lurking in the city, they decided to share a special moment from their childhood together.

Tandy looked at Tyrone with a mischievous smile. "You know, sometimes we forget that we were kids once too. Even though we've been through a lot, there was always something that gave us comfort," she said.

"What do you mean, Tandy?" Tyrone nodded in inquiry.

She stood up and walked over to a box she had brought with her. Carefully, she opened it, revealing two worn and beloved stuffed animals that had been kept secret for years. One was a white-stuffed bunny rabbit with big eyes and floppy ears. The other was a brown teddy bear, looking cuddly and scruffy. Tandy took the bunny into her hands.

"This has been my favorite stuffed animal for as long as I can remember. It always made me feel safe when things got tough at home, especially after Dad." The nostalgia in her voice was evident.

"And this is my lifelong companion. When I was alone, it reminded me that there was always someone who loved me, even if I couldn't see him at the time." Tyrone looked tenderly at the teddy bear his older brother had given him.

They both looked at each other with complicity, sharing a special connection that only they understood. They knew that despite their difficult past and having become superheroes in the most unexpected way, these stuffed animals represented a safe place and a refuge in the darkest moments of their childhood.

Tandy extended the bunny to Tyrone.

"Ty, meet my stuffed friend, Bunny. Although I no longer need him to feel safe, he still has a special place in my heart."

Tyrone took the bunny gently and showed the teddy bear to Tandy.

"This is Teddy, my best furry friend. He always reminded me that there were good things in this world, even when everything seemed to be against me and when my brother was no longer with me.

They both smiled as they hugged their stuffed animals affectionately. It was a simple gesture, but it meant a lot to them. Those worn objects bore witness to their friendship and growth over the years.

"Tandy, you know what? I'm grateful to have met you and to have you share moments like these with me," Tyrone confessed with sincerity.

"Me too, Tyrone. You're one of the few people I can really trust," she replied with a big smile on her face.

They stayed on the roof, enjoying each other's company and sharing stories of their childhood while holding their beloved stuffed animals. In the midst of all that had happened to them, they found a moment to remember where they came from and how far they had come together.

From that night forward, Tandy and Tyrone held Bunny and Teddy in a special place as reminders that no matter how dark the night, there would always be light in their lives and hope in their hearts.

Griffin and Sword Targe for Fergus O'Dae

This is a build log for a late period Scottish targe for Fergus O'Dae, a border reaver and rising star of the Northshield Army. The Griffin and Sword is our Award of Arms-level award for excellency in armored combat.

Before starting the design, I layed out my idea using Heraldicon, a free website built to be even more powerful than Drawshield for assembling coats of arms. I thought it would be very fetching to have the Northshield populace badge outlined in the brass studs characteristic to targes, with the griffin and sword represented with different colored metals.

Laying out the carving and the tacks. A missed step in this album is cutting the wooden core. I actually already had a 20" round of plywood lying around. It wasn't actually a shield blank; it was the center cutout of a wooden ring I made to hold the 3.5' long bolts on our giant electrical wire spool in a specific pattern so I could reassemble the whole thing.

The griffin layout. Many thanks go to Heraldic Traceable Art and Heraldicon as well as the /r/heraldry community for maintaining so many Creative Commons vector assets. I've used this griffin asset by Gunnvôr (Viking Answer Lady) so many times.

With the leather dried it's much easier to see the layout lines. Here's a spot I can make some big improvements on next time: I attached the leather before trimming it to a proper round, and then I didn't fully tack down the back before beginning the layout process. The wood I used was pretty trashy plywood so my drawing and carving surface is also extremely bumpy underneath the leather.

At this stage I began to carve the central award badge with my swivel knife. I need to see if there's swivel knives for children with arthritis because my bog standard Tandy knife gives me hella hand cramps and extreme inflammation on my thumb-palm muscles.

Your eyes do not deceive you: I did in fact have a crisis of attention span and pivoted from carving the badge to outlining the compass rose in brass tacks. The majority of the tacks used for this project are 7/16" low dome brass tacks from Crazy Crow Trading Post down in Texas. I also used 1/2" high dome and 1/4" dome tacks from the same shop.

Lining up the 1/4" tacks. I actually hadn't planned to do these lines initially, but I had to emergency order more tacks and tossed these in for greater variety. I love the end result of this decision. If you tuckered out your arm hammering in 2/3 of the outline tacks with a ball peen, a drill press can take over in a pinch. I really need to get a stool for the drill press.

Tacks complete! We can carve again now.

Added some obligatory trinity knots. It's not Scottish if it doesn't have a triskelion or a trinity knot, dontcha know?

All trinity knots cut, one carved, and I began to add a braid motif too.

...Aaaaand here's improvement opportunity number 2. I was low on time and hand strength so I decided to dye the leather before I carved the braids, but after I cut them. I also picked Fibbings Medium Brown for my dye without doing test patches, and used the standard daubers to apply it. That is three Big Mistakes in a row, and only one is actually justifiable in any way. The result is an extremely uneven dye job that completely washes out the uncarved braids. If I'd given myself one more week to do this scroll, I would've had more rest time for my hands and I think I wouldn't have made these mistakes, but in a way I'm grateful I did because now I know to schedule more time for working on scrolls for the next assignment. Plus, I try to remember what Samii of SunCat Designs says about art: "the mistakes are what make it human".

Because this is an SCA award, I chose to swap the traditional deerhide backing for glued muslin and paint. I then taped off my handle locations and handed it off to my spouse @dustycymbre for the award scroll text. They used their default uncial hand, which is my favorite of their script hands.

Traditional targes have a small brass center boss. When I originally conceived of this award, I had imagined the griffin in brass with a tinned sword, but I haven't actually tried chase and repousse yet and struck upon a different method of making the center griffin allude visually to the center bosses: carve it directly into the leather and then gild it. This particular stage is sealing the carving with Ecoflow Cova Color leather paint, to provide a smooth surface for the glue (also know as gild size).

Cova Color white shouldn't be directly applied to damp dyed leather like this because it soaks up the brown like a sponge. My brightest white application is my H-shield, which dried for about a week before I painted it.

Another ADHD swing of focus: needed to have a long phone conversation with my spouse and bro in law and stitching is a far less active hand activity for me than The Thing I've Never Done Before, so I stitched up the strap and handle. Here the handle is inside out in a jar of water to get nice and soft for turning. 

I stitched a rabbit hide into the interior of the arm strap. It's soft and a little padded, and I think it looks quite fetching. To figure out the right strap length for the recipient's ridiculously beefy arm that helped him earn this award, I asked my former football player bro in law for his arm circumference and then rooted around the house for a pickel jar of the same diameter. Stitch width awls are your friend. One of the top ten tools I own for sure. 

Turning out the handle. This took a lot of hand strength and chopstick finagling. I'm genuinely looking forward to making Kat the Herald's purple shoes because they'll be easier to turn than this fucker. 

Fit check. Look at that beautiful wet shaping on the handle! At this point I felt a level of actual mastery of my craft. I think I can really call myself a leatherworker now. I still have so much to learn and improve, but I feel comfortable. It feels good. 

With the handles done, it's back to gilding. According to the Pinterest mommy blogs, you can skip the professional artist size and use watered down mod podge for the gilding process. I gambled on them being right, whipped out my pack of silver, copper and gold foils, and got down to business. I used a tiny but cheap paint brush to apply the thinned glue to the sword, let it dry a little, and then applied the silver foil. I tapped at it with a napkin through a flour sack towel, let it dry a little and brushed off the excess with a second and much fluffier brush. 

The Pinterest pinnsters aren't entirely wrong about mod podge, but they aren't entirely right either. I had to add more glue and gilding foil like eight times. This is after one of the last additions, but before I brushed away the excess. Mod podge doesn't want to work on the irregular curves of carved leather. The dry time to tackiness was also imprecise and very very short, which made applying the delicate foil correctly very difficult. 

I finally had to give up. There were just too many spots that would not take foil at all. I grabbed my Stewart Semple Heavy Metals box set, pulled out the Goldest Gold, and painted over the bare spots. At this angle, the difference in reflection angles and quality is obvious. The paint is so much more yellow. But deadlines are deadlines, and imperfections make it human. 

This angle is much more favorable. I find myself in love with the effect of the gilding over the carving on the feathers. I need to get good at gilding. 

And here she is signed by Their Majesties Northshield, in the warm lights of the Sioux Falls Coliseum stage. Fergus loves it and it got a lot of ooos and ahs from the populace. I had a lot of fun in spite of some of the frustrations of this build, and I'm excited to try another targe with even more accuracy at some point.

Elo as dogs. Who’s what?

Ooo! Okay now this is perhaps one of the most interesting asks I have ever received!

So, I’m going to assign the seven men different breeds of dogs I feel suit them the best, and I’ll assign the dogs personalities and behaviors that would resemble them to the best of my ability Tumblr-style hahaha. I’m going to create dog “OCs” and I’ll give them lore and I’ll describe how their lives are like basically.

I haven’t owned a dog before as I’m a cat person so I’m not too well versed in their personalities, but I have been around them a lot since I have family members that have them, and, I know for sure, that like us humans, they are all unique and diverse in their personalities, behaviors, and overall moods. I’m neutral to them, but I will pet and hang out with them if I get the chance. (The only breed I really like though are Pomeranians).

Jeff Lynne:

Jeff Lynne would be a miniature poodle. They’re slightly small, have fur around their round muzzles, and just look like him. (Standard poodles are more reminiscent of Brian May from Queen with their large, tall statures and long thin faces if I’m being honest lol)

This dog is very shy and quiet. Sometimes he can be finicky and moody, but that’s just because he tends to be reserved as that’s just simply how he is. Still, he’s a pretty nice and chill pet, and likes to play with tennis balls at times. For some odd reason he really, really likes music from the Beatles, Roy Orbison, and Del Shannon. He is also attracted to items that are the color blue. (All of his dog toys are blue and will growl if you give him one that isn’t blue) He hates the rain, is scared of thunder/lightning storms, and therefore he loves sunny, blue-skied days. He is also sensitive to fluorescent lights at times. He also is obsessed with model trains and is always eager to watch them go around and around. When he rides in cars, he actually enjoys getting stopped by trains and wags his tail happily as the warning lights go off, the barricades go down (if you stop at those specific types of crossings with him) and the train passes through. He dreams of riding in one someday (hopefully in trains that allow dogs haha)

Bev Bevan:

Bev Bevan would be a chocolate labrador. They are large, have wide square-shaped faces, and have brown fur. They also appear large and stocky, like Bev.

This dog is usually reserved and kind, but sometimes he can be very mischievous and likes to pull pranks. He also has a pretty deep sounding bark. He cares about his and other people and pets health, and is very protective of those he cares for. Despite his large size, he doesn’t like fighting and is usually friendly. He can be a bit ornery at times for fun though. He despises snakes and enjoys being around other large dogs. He’s also pretty friendly with dog!Jeff.

Kelly Groucutt:

Similar to Jeff, Kelly would be a poodle. But, since this individual was short in real life, and his hair was a bit shorter, he would specifically be a toy poodle—as they are smaller than miniature poodles—.

This dog is high energy. Like, very high energy. He barks a lot and moves around a lot. He has a very high pitched loud bark. He plays with dog toys all the time and loves to collect them. He likes climbing things and does what ever he can to release his never ending energy. He is super friendly and sweet and loves company. He doesn’t mean any harm and sometimes causes things to break due to his high energy levels. He is also a huge animal lover and is kind to all animals, especially foxes. A very small, lovely, and extroverted pet.

Richard Tandy:

Richard would be a golden retriever. Their fluffy golden blonde fur and reputation for being loyal just scream “Richard Tandy as a dog”.

This dog is very loyal and trustworthy. He is very well-behaved, as well as quiet, though he does have a very low pitched bark, slightly lower than dog!Bev. He usually likes being alone, and enjoys watching tv, especially sports channels. He does struggle with sports but he really likes partaking in them. Still, he is super hardworking and enjoys doing things for people. He usually has a relaxed facial expression and isn’t one to get aggressive, he is very much a hippie haha. He also likes piano music and sometimes attempts to play the piano and it’s just so endearing to watch him do that. He also likes hanging around with dog!Jeff and dog!Bev.

Mik Kaminski:

Mik would be a bearded collie. Just look at an image of Mik, and then at an image of a bearded Collie, and look back at that image of Mik and you’ll know what I’m talking about. The “beard” of the dog just reminds me of Mik’s as it’s not curly yet it’s also smoothed and curved. Also, the small, round yet slightly narrow eyes the dog breed has also remind me of Mik’s eyes for some reason.

This dog, similar to dog!Jeff, is very shy. I’d say even more shy than dog!Jeff. He’s also pretty quiet, similar to dog!Richard. He is also well-behaved and doesn’t cause any problems. He likes the sound of violin music and sometimes likes to bite the violin bow and attempt to play the violin himself. He absolutely loves being around horses and is very smart and calculating. He is very timid and gets scared easily. If you are a stranger to him, be very careful not to scare him or he’ll run away and hide. Despite their contrasting behaviors, he and dog!Kelly are best friends and love hanging out. I guess it’s because they’re both friendly towards each other.

Hugh McDowell:

Hugh McDowell would be an Irish Settler. They have long, flowing fur that reminds me of his long, slightly wavy hair style from the early 70s, and they’re also tall and thin. Their fur also has like a reddish color which reminds me of some Hugh photos where the lighting makes his hair reddish even though it’s actually a blonde-ish brown(?). They also have square shaped, defined muzzles, with far apart eyes.

This dog, like dog!Kelly, is very hyperactive. He loves running around and bites trees and plants a lot for fun. He’s also somewhat nocturnal, he enjoys staring at the night sky. He loves being wild, and sometimes knocks things down in a mischievous way. He can also get moody at times but deep down is very sweet. He also does things to make people laugh. Also, he really loves snakes, especially boas. He likes to make sure they remain safe and is protective of any snake he comes across. He’s really brave in that sense. He also gets really sad when he tries to find snakes but ends up not finding any haha. He really enjoys hanging around dog!Melvyn and dog!Mik. He also likes the color purple and enjoys wearing suits fitted for dogs lol. He also loves messing around with cellos and biting them haha. Rarely he can be seen trying to play them! But sometimes he breaks them by accident. Classical music really interests him.

Melvyn Gale:

Melvyn would be a regular collie. Just—the feathery, long, caramel colored fur of this breed with those friendly doe-eyes and the perpetual permanent smile collies have just remind me of Melvyn.

This dog is friendly. Very friendly. Unfortunately, some might think he’s overly-friendly. But who cares? He’s a really sweet dog, and just happens to be very vocal. He enjoys hugs and attention. He does bark and make noise a lot, but he doesn’t mean to irritate or annoy anyone, he just really likes to communicate verbally and loves people! He enjoys being around them and likes being their friend and socializing with them, like a stereotypical friendly dog! He loves other dogs and cats as well. He really likes hanging out with dog!Hugh and is practically his best friend. He also really likes cars and planes. He loves car rides and wants to ride on planes as well. Like dog!Hugh he also enjoys cellos and sometimes attempts to play them. He likes classical music and enjoys listening to it.

like... white blonde blue-eyed teen ballerina with daddy issues and an absent mother figure who runs away from her suburban upper-middle-class background to the city, where she meets a sweet nerdy black boy who has trouble fitting in and was recently traumatized by a death in the family, and they become cosmically-linked soulmates with a positive codependency who form a superhero duo complete with the guy in a black costume and the girl in a white one?

guys. that's not miles and gwen. that's tyrone and tandy. that's cloak and dagger. why distort gwen and miles's characters and storylines and waste time insisting on joining them at the hip forever when cloak and dagger are right there. they're everything you're looking for with none of the mental gymnastics and they're c-list characters who could use your support.

Do your characters have any hobbies?

If so what are they?

Yes :) Phillip and Jay play music together, Phillip plays bass and guitar and Jay plays guitar and keyboard/piano. They can both sing (wild) Darwin likes photography in the little spare time they have Max and Mikey like to play D&D together and Max likes to try paint those little figures that come with them. He's not the best at it but he likes doing it anyway and collecting them is something he enjoys. Mikey also likes playing older video games (im talking like 40-30 years old old) Tandy also likes these, but he prefers fiddling (hehe fiddling) with older computers so doesn't usually join them. Jay also likes playing arcade style games. Mikey also draws comics, not of quality but definitely full of passion Sierra has a weird hobby, she likes to collect biege things and has ever since she was able to see the colour biege she just, really likes the colour biege (I do too girl) she isn't just collecting boring things or anything, she also likes collecting brown and beige stuffed animals. Like this:

she doesn't like animals generally, but she seems fond of things with fluffy textures, just doesn't like when said fluffy things jump up at her or make a mess and smell bad. (this biege obsession doesn't affect her fashion choices generally, she actually likes it better when other people wear beige than herself.) Sonnet likes dancing! She has a lot of energy and likes to do something high energy like that. She isn't a professional or anything but its something she takes a keen interest in. She has really really bad vision so likes feeling the rhythm in music and just dancing it out! Her favourite band to dance to is Aqua (of Barbie Girl fame) she thinks it's appropriately "camp". She also enjoys any activity she can do that involves leaving the house and doing anything fun! Sierra is more than happy to take her places.

Cathy likes sewing clothes, when she isn't organising get togethers with robots. She likes making outfits and miniature sets for toys and dolls. Which comes in really handy when Lithium and Sonnet meet her she's more than happy to make them things their size theres other hobbies other robots have but I won't go into them here

When Alice Hale leaves a career in publicity to become a writer and follows her husband to the New York suburbs, she is unaccustomed to filling her days alone in a big, empty house. But when she finds a vintage cookbook buried in a box in the old home’s basement, she becomes captivated by the cookbook’s previous owner–1950s housewife Nellie Murdoch. As Alice cooks her way through the past, she realizes that within the cookbook’s pages Nellie left clues about her life–including a mysterious series of unsent letters penned to her mother. Soon Alice learns that while baked Alaska and meatloaf five ways may seem harmless, Nellie’s secrets may have been anything but. When Alice uncovers a more sinister–even dangerous–side to Nellie’s marriage, and has become increasingly dissatisfied with the mounting pressures in her own relationship, she begins to take control of her life and protect herself with a few secrets of her own.

I thought this book was going take the "the house is haunted by the spirit of the 50's housewife" or even the "the house is alive" route because of some elements at the beginning but uh, they end up not mattering at all? So that was weird

It was an interesting read, but I didn't like Alice's character/story nearly as much as Nellie's. I didn't understand some of her actions and decisions, thought some were stupid. The parts I liked best about Alice's chapters were when Nellie was mentioned. I kinda wish it was more like The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, in the way that Monique wasn't a big part of the story as a whole but she still had her stakes in it. I did like that, when Alice read Nellie's letters, you can tell there was more to what she was writing

Also, Nellie's chapters had my brain playing Paris Paloma's Labour on loop, it really fits the vibes. It also reminded me of the show Why Women Kill (at least the first season), which I loved. So if anyone has recs for similar book, please please please tell me, I'm desperate

Mais lorsqu'elle trouve un livre de cuisine vintage enterré dans la cave de la vieille maison, elle est fascinée par la précédente propriétaire du livre, Nellie Murdoch, femme au foyer des années 1950. Tandis qu'Alice explore le passé au fil des recettes, elle réalise que Nellie a laissé entre les pages du livre de cuisine des indices concernant sa vie, dont une série de lettres adressées à sa mère jamais postées. J'ai cru que ce livre allait faire le coup du "la maison est hantée par le fantôme de la femme des années 50" ou encore "la maison est en vie" à cause de certains éléments au début mais euh, au final ils ont aucune importance ? Donc c'était bizarre

C'était une lecture intéressante mais j'ai pas aimé le personnage/l'histoire d'Alice autant que celle de Nellie. J'ai pas compris certaines de ses actions et de ses décisions, j'en ai même trouvé certaines stupides. Les moments que j'ai le plus apprécié dans les chapitres d'Alice étaient ceux où Nellie était mentionnée. J'aurais limité préféré que le livre soit plus comme The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, dans le sens où Monique n'était pas super importante dans l'histoire mais il y avait quand même des enjeux pour elle. Flufftober Day 7: Movie Marathon

“Alright door’s locked, lights are off… snacks are here, what’s next?” Tyrone asks as he drops two grocery bags down on the coffee table in front of the couch.

It’s been five years since him and Tandy became heroes. A lot has changed over the years, one of them being that they decided on finally getting a place where they could relax, unwind, and heal without having to worry about cops, enemies, or other squatters stumbling upon whatever they were using as a hideout at the given moment. The place they’re renting in New Orleans isn’t anything extravagant, a simple one bedroom and one bath, but its theirs and its safe which is all they could really ask for. Currently their apartment is decorated with a medium sized Christmas tree that is wrapped with multicolored lights and tinsel and has a few baubles hanging off of it.  

Tandy walks over to the living room with two steaming mugs of hot chocolate. She hands one of the mugs to Tyrone before sitting down next to him on the couch. A large bowl of popcorn is one the coffee table in front of them.

“So, what’s the line up for tonight?” Tyrone asks

“Glad you asked. Alright, so first up The Polar Express, then Die Hard-”

“Die Hard, really?”

“What, you don’t like Die Hard?” Tandy asks sitting forward in her seat to give Tyrone an incredulous look. 

Ty can’t help the smile that crosses his face when he sees the look Tandy gives him. “I like Die Hard just fine, but is it really a Christmas movie?”

“It takes place around Christmas thus it’s a Christmas movie.”

“I’m not sure that’s how it works.”

Tandy rolls her eyes and lets out and exaggerated sigh. “Do you want to watch the movie or not?”

“T, we can watch the movie.” Tyrone says with a teasing smile. 

Tandy settles back into the couch and leans into Tyrone, who places his arm around her pulling her closer. “Great. So, now if you’re done interrupting me the rest of the movies in today’s lineup are Rise of the Guardians, Elf, and Home Alone.”   

“You’ve put a lot of thought into tonight’s watch list, huh?”

“Yeah, its our first week off from both private investigating and being heroes. And no offense but if I let you pick the Christmas movies we’d probably be stuck watching the original Rudolph and Merry Christmas Charlie Brown.”

“Hey, those are great movies.”

“Yes, they are but they are also extremely old.”

“They’re classics.”

“Which is just another word for old and Ty I love you but I’m simply not willing to watch the original version of Rudolph and Frosty the Snowman. Again. For the fourth year in a row.”

Tyrone chuckles softly. “Alright, alright I get it. Start the first movie.”

Tandy sets down her mug and grabs the popcorn bowl as the first scene of the Polar Express begin to play out.  

Over the next few hours the two of them relax into each other as the Christmas movies play out in front of them. They cry during the Polar Express, laugh at the ridiculousness of Die Hard, and root for the heroes in Rise of the Guardians. The pizza that they ordered during Die Hard is half eaten with the box laying open on the coffee table along with empty mugs and a bowl of mostly eaten popcorn.

Eventually, Tyrone and Tandy go from sitting up one the couch to laying down with Tandy laying on top Tyrone her head resting his chest. Tyrone’s arms are wrapped around Tandy’s waist. Tyrone can feel Tandy’s breathing slowly evens out. He silently chuckles, before pressing a soft kiss to the crown of her head. He knows that Tandy’s going to be a little upset that she fell asleep during their Christmas movie marathon, but he also knows how much Tandy needs the rest. Really, they could both use any extra rest they can get. They had both been run ragged over the last few weeks both as private investigators and heroes.

Tandy is probably going to insist that they re-watch the movies that they fell asleep on, but that’s fine they have the rest of their lives to watch all the Christmas movies, drink hot chocolate, and everything else in between together. For right now Tyrone was okay with just enjoying this moment. Tyrone let the sound of Tandy’s soft breathing and the sound of movie playing in the background lull him to sleep.

Experimenting with Dyeing Leather and Rubber

Since this is my first cosplay, like ever, I don't know what I'm doing. Therefore, I fucked around and found out a lot of the do's and don'ts of working with leather, dyeing leather, and dyeing rubber. I also started taking leathercrafting classes at Tandy Leather (shoutout for their free 3-session, 3-hour long classes) and gained some great knowledge on how to care for leather and your tools. I'll share some of the essential processes and techniques I've learned from them after I finish those classes.

Otherwise, here are the results of my first attempts at dyeing leather and rubber! All of these experiments (with the exception of A6) were done using Rit's All-Purpose Dye in Aquamarine. A bottle is about $5 at Joann's.

I wanted to nail down the turquoise portion of Talanah's outfit early because 1) it's a large portion, at least visually, of the cosplay, and 2) I figure it's going to take the longest to dye due to it's vibrancy. The burgundy can be slapped on and it'll look great.

Overall, the results are pretty sad, but this was a very insightful exercise.

Below is a detailed breakdown of what I did for each piece and an explanation of what worked and what didn't.

A: Leather Dyeing Experiments

Early on, I found that the color of the veg tanned leather was too dark in order to support a vibrant turquoise dye. Any attempts at dyeing the leather as-is created a dark teal color instead. As such, all of the experiments discussed in this post were performed on a sanded piece of leather. Here you can see the difference in color between an unsanded and sanded piece of leather.

I wasn't too attentive with the sanding and also learned that leaving any bits of brown showed up prominently in the final dye.

Hot Soak

A1 and A2 was created by boiling 1.5L of water with 3 teaspoons of Rit Dye. A1 was dipped and left in the pot of boiling water for approximately 30 seconds, which promptly crisped the heck out of the leather strips. Hot water bad for leather! I suppose your own skin wouldn't react too being dunked in hot water. A2 was dipped in the boiling water 3 times for 10 second increments.

Results: very dried out pieces of leather that are hard to the touch with poor color.

Direct Application of Dye Solution

A3 and A4 was created by allowing the hot soak to cool down and using a sponge to apply/rub in the solution into the leather. The leather strips were heavily saturated with the solution, laid out to dry for a couple hours, and then the process was repeated two more times. A3 had a thin application of Tan Kote, which was allowed to dry, and then was buffed with a microfiber cloth.

Results: A3 was about the same shade as A4, but adding the layer of Tan Kote seemed to have removed some color. This could also indicate that the dye solution did not penetrate the leather deeply enough. A4 is an okay color, but it is not nearly as vibrant or consistent as I need it to be. There is some streaking that can be seen from passes of the sponge.

Direct Application of Slightly Diluted Dye

Seeing that applying the dye solution as instructed by the manufacturer resulted in a color that was far too light, I opted for a cold solution of one part water to one part dye. This was applied to A5, allowed to dry, and then repeated one more time. Why I chose a one-to-one part solution is because a 100% dye application resulted in a deep blue color nowhere near turquoise.

Results: A5 is getting close. It's not as light as the previous process and definitely not as dark as the straight dye. However, it's still not where I want it to be.

Acrylic Paint

Frustrated by the lack of at least one color match, I decided to mess around with acrylic just for the sake of my motivation for this cosplay. Because of the 1000 hobbies I have, I used some tubes of acrylic I had lying around and mixed 4 parts white, two parts blue, and one part green with a splash of yellow for that extra bit of brightness. I painted a thin layer of it on a piece that is now A6 and was so happy with it that I painted two more with it (and to use all of the paint).

Do you like my very professional drying fixture? Just goes to show that you don't need fancy shit to make good stuff. Anyway...

Results: the acrylic matched so well! But I won't be using it for the cosplay because acrylic flakes like crazy. Bending the samples cracked the acrylic immediately and I know it'll get destroyed just from being within 5 feet of a rock.

However, getting A6 to match so well made A5 look like it matched just as well. At least compared to A3 (before Tan Kote finish) and A4.

Therefore, this made me research about other ways to lighten leather before applying the dye. The slight tint in A5 should theoretically go away if I can find a way to make the leather nearly white. Sanding is only going to take me so far. I'm in the middle of those experiments now and I hope it works out.

B: Rubber Dyeing Experiments

Rubber is an unforgiving material to dye. I knew going into this that it was going to be a difficult and long process to get the dye to penetrate the rubber. I also was struggling with the leather at the same time, so there are some aggressive experiments I did just to get some semblance of dye on the rubber.

Hot Soak

B1 was created at the same time as A1 and A2, but I left it in the solution for nearly two hours because I started browsing through Reddit and forgot about it.

Results: splotchy and uneven dye. Not pretty whatsoever.

Cold Soak

B2 was created by dropping a sample into the solution while it was still hot and allowed it to soak as it cooled. The sample was left in the solution for about 12 hours.

B3, B4, and B5 were dropped in after the solution cooled. B3 was removed after 12 hours, B4 was removed after 24 hours, and B5 was removed after 48 hours.

Results: trash. Basically nothing happened to B3 and B2, B4, and B5 had progressively better color, but it was still practically white. Of course, I could leave the pieces in there for more time, but after 2 days of waiting it gets kind of ridiculous! Especially for such poor results.

Direct Application of Dye

At this point, I was like, "Fuck it" and poured the dye straight out of the bottle onto a sample which is B6. I let that soak cold for about a day, rinsed it in water which washed a lot of the color away, got mad, used a sponge to really scrub dye into the rubber and the little pockets, and let that sit for another day.

When the dye isn't diluted, apparently it evaporates until there are these little blue crystals leftover. I proceeded to scrub those crystals into the rubber as well and wow, would you look at that, the color is pretty close to A6! The picture isn't a great representation of the true color, but it's actually on par with A6.

Results: Looks great! I'll need to work on not angrily scrubbing the dye in so that the results are a bit more even, but the color is acceptable.

Conclusion

Overall, I'm pretty sure I've found the method for dyeing the rubber. I'll need to replicate the process a few times to hone it down and make sure I can get consistent results, but it's a straightforward process thankfully. As for the leather, I'm in the middle of trying one last method for whitening the leather, and then I'll test out the cold soak and direct application of diluted dye on them.

*The Stars Are the Styx* is one of Theodore Sturgeon’s last books. It was put together by Sturgeon for Jim Frankles’ Blue Jay Books in 1979. The dedicatee was his last partner, Jayne Tannehill Englehart (who went by the name Jayne Sturgeon when they were together), to whom he was not actually married but was living with on the West Coast, who had a son by a former marriage, for whom Ted was a stepfather. It contains ten stories: “Tandy’s Story” (*Galaxy,* April 1961), “Rule of Three” (*Galaxy,* January 1951), “The Education of Drusilla Strange” (*Galaxy,* March 1954), “Granny Won’t Knit” (*Galaxy,* May 1954), “When You’re Smiling” (*Galaxy,* January 1955), “The Claustrophile” (*Galaxy,* August 1956), “The Other Man” (*Galaxy,* September 1956), the title tale, “The Stars Are the Styx” (*Galaxy,* October 1950), “Occam’s Scalpel” (*If,* July–August 1971), and “Dazed” (*Galaxy,* October 1971). Sturgeon (1918, 26 Feb--1985, 8 May) provides a brief introduction for each of the stories, all of which are from either *Galaxy* or If, which, after Frederick Pohl took it over, was known as the Galaxy Combine and also included Worlds of Tomorrow. First published by Dell, in 1979, the book won that year’s Locus Award, and in ’84, it was republished by Bluejay Books as a trade paperback with the same cover.

In his introduction to the second story, “The Rule of Three,” Sturgeon makes an interesting gaffe:

"My preoccupation for some time has been with the nature of marriage, and whether or not we haven’t gotten ourselves off on the wrong foot. Divorce statistics would seem to indicate that there is nothing more destructive of marriage than monogamy. “Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediment,” wrote Elizabeth Barrett (a monogamist if there ever was one), but she had a point there. Although the person who wrote Rule of Three clearly regarded the desirability of monogamy as axiomatic, the astute reader—another term for postgame quarter-backing—might find in it the seeds of later ideation. One tends to work out one’s own convictions in writing fiction—especially in science fiction—and to test them against possibilities, however untimely or unformed or wishful or improbable. . . ."

The line “Let me not to the marriage of true minds . . .” is not by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. It is the opening of Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116 and was very possibly written about a young man the Bard was taken with, during his youth: the story of the Dark Lady and his young male friend has prompted some of the most interesting speculations from writers ranging from Oscar Wilde ("Portrait of Mr. W. H.") to much more sedate interpretations by Stephen Booth in 1933. For better or for worse, Shakespeare lived in a world and got his livelihood in a profession that welcomed transgendered performers so that Wilde’s assumptions—whether they be applied to the Earl of Oxford (who definitely had male lovers, as well as a wife) or simply to a refugee genius from Shropshire—is simply not all that far fetched. Almost certainly, the Elizabeth Barrett sonnet that Sturgeon initially had in mind was her Sonnet 43. To quote the editor of the book shown in the post: “This sonnet is perhaps the most famous of the entire series and the most frequently anthologized":

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace. I love thee to the level of every day’s Most quiet need by sun and candle light. . . .

Likely, that would be Mrs. Browning’s sonnet he had in mind, though the entire series contains 44 of them, and—in this edition—each leads to a bit of biography prior to 1850.
