I sold some Genesis games that I knew I'd never play again and decided to reinvest that back into current indie-developed Genesis games! I got my copy of Tanzer about a week ago; it is just fantastic.
The gameplay is fast-paced, responsive, and so satisfying to get better at. The music gets you thoroughly pumped up while having an undertone of menace that matches the visuals of the strange virus creatures well. The art direction and color is superb, immediately letting you know what time period your character has landed in with visual clues. (As well as telling you as you enter each level)
The high score system helps you track your mastery of the game, showing you how well you’ve learned the jump attack and comboing them together. The construction of the cart, box, and full-color manual are just stunning. No complaints, just fantastic.
My ONLY note is that I wish the cart came with a battery backup for the high scores, allowing you to track these more easily between play sessions. Without the battery backup, when you turn off the system, the high score resets. Even with that, I’d ABSOLUTELY give Tanzer 5/5. Its gameplay is addicting, beats bumping, and art striking. Can’t wait to see more from this developer and I’m excited to get more games published by Mega Cat Studios.
Sorry for the auto focus, my phone can't handle how fucking hard this opening goes. That TITLE DROP.

My two OCs, Tanzer and Leonid. Their story varies on the verse, but in the verse I’m most focused on for them rn, they are enemies-to-lovers trapped in an apocalypse.
Tanzer is a very sweet man, very warm, a little chatty, selfless to a fault. He was always a bit directionless, having always been stifled in his dreams and ambitions by an unsupportive family. However, he does draw and whittle, indicating a creative side.
Leonid is somewhat stoic, dry in his humor, emotionally distant due to the trauma of war and an unfortunate breakup with his fiancée a year back—but he definitely has a warm and soft side, wanting to love and be loved. He wanted to be an author, but the apocalypse threw a wrench in his plans.
This is a WIP; I’ll probably color them in sometime soon :)
Creatures of Will & Temper by Molly Tanzer. (Lesbian retelling of the Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde) ✨Best book I ever bought just based off the cover art
