gentle wind - tapejara "gentle wind" is a project about pterosaurs i'm making. there's no story, no timeline, and almost no structure - just something to appreciate these beautiful creatures. i'll post more parts of it here in the future!! if anyone would like to see some process - let me know, i can post it as well :) also people were asking if it was a studio project - no, i'm doing it completely outside of it, so it's just my little thing. from scratch, and without any financial support. only my motivation and being obsessed with pterosaurs:)

This is the finished Spinosaurus piece in all its glory! I did this piece to have something special for The Society of Vertebrate Paleontology conference.
The Allosaurus/Diplodocus piece was the intended artwork for the conference, but art is fickle.
13" x 38" prints are now available for purchase on my website.

I really like dromaeosaurids and pterosaurs, even though the latter are not dinosaurs. The quick color sketches were a lot of fun!)
Below are my very old drawings, which are about two years old. The first one holds a memory of the Path of Titans demo, as I happened to catch the big migration. It was a fascinating journey, which is what the art is dedicated to.

National Fossil: Brazil
Last time Argentinosaurus won the title of Argentinas National Fossil (not surprising) and Argentavis came in second (kinda surprising; I didn‘t know you guys liked big-ass birds that much). This time we‘re looking at some Brazilian fossils!
Once again, you get to vote on which one should represent the nation. As always, it could be a fossil that is just exceptionally well preserved and beautiful, had a huge impact on paleontology and our knowledge of the past, is very common/representative of the area, is beloved and famous in the public eye, is just a very unique and interesting find, or has any other justification.
Here are the contestants:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tupandactylus/Tapejara (Art by Gabriel Ugueto): There are no big-ass bird competitors this time around, but I can offer you the next best thing: Pterosaurs! There have been many pterosaur species described from Brazilian fossil sites and they have greatly improved our understanding of these creatures. I picked Tupandactylus/Tapejara (there is some dispute about naming/species) to represent this group, because their big creasts make them some of the most visually interesting pterosaurs and with a wingspan of up to 4 m they also reach quite impressive sizes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Ubirajara“ (Art by Bob Nicholls): Next up is a small theropod dinosaur. The fossil has been found in Brazil, but then was smuggled out of the country (allegedly) and found its way to Germany. A lot of legal dispute and campaigning later, the dinosaur became a bit of a symbol against colonialism in paleontology. Just this year the fossil finally found its way back home, and probably will be re-named soon, since the original paper about it has been retracted.
Tumblr media
Irritator: This relative of the much more famous Spinosaurus got its name because of how frustrating and challenging the restoration of the fossil was: Fossil hunters had made a lot of changes and “repairs“ to the original skull to make it more appealing. Scientists then had to spend a lot of time undoing all those changes. But even after all of that, Irritator‘s skull is one of the best preserved spinosaur skulls ever found.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Purussaurus: This relative of modern caimans lived during the Miocene epoch. With size estimates of well over 10 m it was one of the biggest crocodylians ever, rivaling even some of the biggest carnivorous dinosaurs in terms of size.
Tumblr media
Prionosuchus (Art by Thomas Sutton): You might be wondering why I‘m showing you yet another crocodile - you are mistaken! Prionosuchus is not a croc, it is an amphibian. It lived during the Permian, so it is older than all other creatures on this list. Some of the biggest specimen found suggest that it might have reached a length of up to 9 m, making it one of the largest amphibians ever.

The Tames of Nublar
Here you have some of the tames of The Survivors of Nublar, not all that they have, I will show others later. All of the beasts drawn are inspired by my own dinos in ARK, as are almost all of the tamed dinosaurs that appear in the story.
For now I only drew the favorite dinosaur of each one and the two most important ones from chapter 5.
I'm sorry I couldn't draw the Tapejara the pterosaurs are something I've never been able to draw, and although I tried for days there was no way.

#Archovember Day 28 - Tapejara wellnhoferi
The Tapejarids were Cretaceous pterodactyloids famous for their impressive crests. I’ve drawn a handful of various tapejarids over the years, I figured it was finally time for the type species of the family: Tapejara wellnhoferi.
Smaller than their close relatives, Tupandactylus, Tapejara was still a mid-sized pterosaur. It had a bony semi-circular crest over the snout and a bony prong that extended back behind the head, which could have supported a number of different soft tissue crest shapes. Unlike the Tupandactylus species, Tapejara fossils did not preserve signs of a keratinous crest. Study on Tapejara’s scleral rings have shown that these pterosaurs may have been cathameral (active at irregular periods during both day and night, whenever resources are available). There were a variety of pterosaurs in Early Cretaceous Brazil, filling both land predator and fish-eating niches. Tapejara could have filled a different niche as an omnivore or full herbivore.
Tumblr media
Like most of Cretaceous Brazil, the Romualdo Formation was a hotspot for pterosaurs. Tapejara wellnhoferi would have lived alongside many species of Anhanguera as well as other anhanguerids like Maaradactylus, Cearadactylus, and Tropeognathus. There were also ornithocheirids like Araripesaurus and Brasileodactylus, and targaryendraconids like Barbosania. It wasn’t the only pterosaur with an impressive crest either, as it would have also shared the environment with other tapejarids like Thalassodromeus, Kariridraco, and Tupuxuara. While pterosaurs dominated the landscape, there were also dinosaurs here, such as the spinosaurid Irritator, the compsognathid Mirischia, and other indeterminate theropods like Aratasaurus and Santanaraptor. There were even some pseudosuchians here, including an Araripesuchus species, Araripesuchus gomesii.
