Pholidota. This order is made up of the pangolin, the only mammal to have keratin scales.
Perissodactyla. This order is also known as the odd-toed ungulates because they (mostly) have hooves and bear weight on one or three toes. It is made up of equines, rhinos, and tapirs.
April 27th is World Tapir Day! Yes, for real. Yes, absolutely, they deserve it, I know.
Their special day falls on the same date as International Hyena Day, which I drew a picture for last year-- and at the time, I felt bad for not having had the time to also draw a picture for the tapirs. I'm making things right this year! The big day isn't quite here yet, but I'm leaving for a trip on Monday, so I wanted to post this tribute early. Green leafs and best wishes to you and your loved ones during this holiday season.
Malayan tapir. The largest of the four tapir species. Their noses are prehensile, like an elephant’s, but they’re actually more closely related to horses and rhinos. A strange little guy! :-)
[ID: an illustration of a black and white tapir on a yellow background, surrounded by red hibiscus flowers and leaves. End.]
I've been challenging myself to paint some more exotic animals instead of my usual horse paintings, so here's a Tapir! I've always loved how they look and it's cool that they're related to both horses and rhinos.
While most tapirs live in tropical rainforests, the mountain tapir lives high in the northern Andes mountains, in Colombia and Ecuador. Their woolly coat protects them from the cold at these altitudes. They live in two main mountain environments: cloud forest, a type of high-altitude tropical forest blanketed in fog and filled with moss, and Páramo, a unique South American type of alpine tundra with plants found nowhere else in the world.
