[Tarot Article] Reading Tarot for Yourself
Tumblr media
Hello my dear followers and random visitors of this blog!
Let’s discuss the topic of reading tarot and other types of divination cards for oneself today. I have heard multiple times that even experienced readers face difficulties when trying to read cards for themselves and so it’s surely worth it to cast some light on this.
Personal Journey
When I started with tarot I was reading cards only for myself. That was 17 years ago. I wouldn’t dare to read for anybody else, unless I could see there was some relevance in what the cards say to me. Once I felt slightly more confident, I read cards for close family members and friends. About 3-4 years ago I started reading cards for online friends and strangers online. This was my personal journey. As you see, I always read tarot for myself, right from the very start and I do so up to this day.
And yes, sometimes the messages can be a bit confusing but that happens when I read for others, too. I have no real problem reading tarot for myself and I can share some tips on how you can enjoy this part of tarot practice, too, if you are currently struggling.
How to read cards for yourself
Tarot for yourself is the same as doing the reading for your querents. Only your querent is you. In theory, it should be easier because you already know everything about yourself, your signs, your life situation, your relationships, etc., right? So why does it seem more difficult for many readers?
The possible explanation is that you can’t be unbiased about yourself. You always approach a reading with a subconscious wish on how it should look, what’s the answer you want to see in the cards. This might taint your vision, your intuition might get foggy, suddenly the cards make no sense and you are left more bewildered than before, enlightenment and insight didn’t happen for you. How to fix this? How to become unbiased about yourself?
Start with questions where you don’t care what the result is and you are open to any answer!
When doing reading for yourself, try to first do readings where you genuinely don’t care about the result. Ask about things where you are open to any outcome. Meaning - don’t ask about your future spouse because you do have preferences there. 😀 Ask about something neutral or even about things you feel zero interest in. That way, it’s more likely for you to be unbiased and see a clear answer in the cards. You can browse pinterest for tarot spreads inspirations and just try some of them out, preferably the ones where you don’t care what the result is going to be. If you want to try a relationship couple reading, do it with a person you don’t love nor dislike, someone you feel neutral about. Just to be clear here, this is not the final stage, this is only the beginning. You will be able to do readings about things that matter to you in time. 🙂
Many people turn to self reading at times of stress or turmoil going on in their life and that might also cause troubles. When your own mind is a mess, it’s very likely to affect your cards, too. You might experience more confusion from the reading.
Calm your mind and soul down before reading for yourself!
Whatever technique works for you, use it. Meditation, hot bath, listening to music, gardening, yoga, jogging, a walk outside, breath work, exercise, dancing, reading a book, staring at a wall… Try to calm yourself down before the tarot reading so you don’t approach your cards agitated and on the verge of blowing out. With your mind becoming more peaceful, you are more likely to see clear messages in your cards.
It often happens that people are unsatisfied with the answer and keep asking again and again the same question. Stop that. Life ain’t a rose garden, you won’t always get the kind of answer you want.
Learn to accept uncomfortable, negative, even hurtful information without them ruining your day!
Nothing in life is permanent. Hard times pass, life hurricanes blow over. If you see something you don’t like in the cards, don’t waste time asking repeatedly. What tarot shows is something based on the current situation. Stop trying to change the cards and better change something about your life and reality. Some things are inevitable, even the more hurtful ones. When my mom had cancer, my cards never said she’s not going to make it. They kept saying I’m going to become responsible for the entire household and make my own decisions. It was clear what cards meant by it. And I did everything to help mom but at the same time I prepared for the worst case scenario, I overtook every single responsibility mom was still trying to keep for herself. When she truly passed away, it was devastating but it didn’t break me down and it didn’t throw my life into chaos because I already had everything in my hands. I didn’t want to see those messages in the cards but I had to accept them so I could cope and adapt. This is an extreme example but it will work with less dramatic unfavourable life situations, too.
Even if you follow the above suggestions, you might still feel confused sometimes about your cards.
Don’t be afraid to ask!
Brainstorm with other tarot readers about the cards and possible meanings. Sometimes other people notice tiny details about the cards you overlooked. Other people have different perspectives on the meanings than you do and can come up with a possible explanation you would never think of. My friend, who also has a tarot blog @starwell-tarot would confirm that I sometimes send her my cards so I can discuss what they could possibly mean. And her different point of view and insight truly help a great deal. So don’t be afraid to discuss and ask and learn.
Never stop trying and practising!
Nobody is born an expert. With continued practice, knowledge and skill improvement come to you. Just keep trying. Don’t give up. Read for yourself. Do daily pulls for yourself. Try the variety of spreads available. Be creative and come up with your own types of readings. Participate in tarot challenges! (Very subtle self-promotion, right? 😂) Start a tarot journal. Do patchwork readings (just randomly laying down cards without a question on your mind and see what the cards tell you, you can combine with other divination tools like runes, oracle cards, Lenormand, etc., creating a patchwork collage). Simply do whatever brings joy to your tarot practice.
The basic rules for reading cards for yourself:
Try to be unbiased
Calm your mind
Accept and adapt to unwanted messages
Brainstorm with others
Keep trying and practising!

Thought I’d try something a little different for a February tarot challenge. No need to do something everyday. Do as much or as little as you like.
Shuffle + Search - is a technique where you shuffle, turn the deck over, and look for a specific card. Then you read the cards on either side of it as significant in some way. Can be read intuitively.
Pull Out + Draw - remove the card in question, shuffle, then pull 3 cards. Can be read intuitively.
Card Study - pull out the card and jot down notes of your observations, what it reminds you of, or journal on it generally.
Feel free to download the bingo card, cross things off, and upload it so you can show off what you did at the end of the month. Hit me up with any questions and I hope you enjoy!

30-day tarot spread challenge
today's spread is gonna be shadow work based since yesterday's reading suggested I needed to do more of this + dream work.
Day 2/30
Spread:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reading:
card decks used: les vampires, tarot de la nuit
card one: anti hero | I chose my les vampires oracle deck to do this portion of the spread because I think decks like this are perfect for interpreting personas or archetypes. The card I got was anti-hero, ''maverick, risk taker, and rule breaker.'' I think this is accurate in some instances, to some people I think I do present myself as an antagonist in a comedic/unserious way. I present myself as someone who does not appreciate rules and institutions, and this had gotten me in arguments with family.
card two: ten of cups | ten of cups representing what I conceal or hide is very interesting because its true, i interpret the ten of cups as the family and the sentimental side of life. I've always been someone who doesnt like to be sentimental even in private at the risk of being seen as cheesy, I've always hated movies that are intentionally trying to make the audience cry, Ive always been hyper aware of how people try to invoke emotion, responding emotionally almost feels like im following a script. I cringe when certain people try to be vulnerable or sentimental especially with the intention of forcing a reaction from other people, rather than sharing something without any expectations afterwards. I've been this way since a kid, I do try to conceal being sentimental and emotional because I think I subconsciously want to avoid being someone who uses emotions to manipulate and get a reaction from others.
Card three, the hierophant | the card that represents my feminine self is the hierophant?? at first impressions, the hierophant is about societal norms, tradition, institutions, community, and essentially the archetype of a wise elder or professional. So with this in mind, I think this is possibly saying that the feminine aspect of me is traditional in a sense, shes a woman in the way society defines a woman. The card in the deck im using is depicted using a man, (like most decks) so I think this is saying that this feminine aspect of me is supplied by a male dominated society, shes defined by a very patriarchal view of what a woman should be. I do think this is true as I have written about trying to exile the male gaze from my own self-perception in my own journaling. going back to the first card where I portray myself as disobedient to norms and rules, I think it's important to point out how the actual feminine aspect of me is litterally the oppoiste of that. to some degree, the feminine traits in me are influence by societal norms and expectations, so although I'd like to think of myself as a rule breaker, i conform more than I'd like to admit.
card four: the three of pentacles | the three of pentacles representing the masculine in me makes me want to laugh for some reason. the three of pentacles on surface level is about teamwork, applying skills, planning, strategizing, inspiration, etc. So on first impressions, I wonder if my masculine traits present in a very practical way, perhaps when Im trying to help and work with other people or develop new skills? I think my masculine traits are positive but this makes me sad, because I wish my feminine traits also presented in a way that didn't contradict what I think I present to the world.
card five: death | death representing my whole self is kind of cunt. the culmination of all my traits and complexities is ultimately about transformation and rebirth. Death in this card deck is portrayed as a woman going to a festival to celebrate the dead, so alternately this represents celebration and gratitude, almost as if my whole self honors and celebrates the previous forms of me. my ''whole self'' is a graveyard of who I used to be, and a celebration of all the forms I've had to take to get here-, my whole self is ever evolving and honoring the past. I am a Scorpio rising and Venus so I think this accurately portrays my scorpion traits as well.

Okay, but hear me out. Ask your divination tools what you have in common with your favorite characters. I'll go first.
For this one I went with Ruth Langmore from Ozark. Based on these cards (the hermit, ten of pentacles, seven of pentacles) I prefer solitude but find value in family. There is also indication of aiming to satisfy long-term goals and being a little bit prideful, but still hard working.

She went on a date with Bjorn while it was still Love Day, but it turns out they meshed better as friends than as lovers.
Pepper’s first vet visit was the result of a lost fight with a squirrel.
Myra’s life was very active, but some stuff was not a priority, like festivals.  If she hadn’t naturally developed her comedy skill, there would have been no interest in going to the Humor & Hyjinks festival, but her team took it by storm.

Three Of Wands
Tarot Study Challenge via @a-witch-named-crow
Raven Prophecy - Maggie Stiefvater
I really love the art on this one, its a raven in a tree perched prospectively over a fire.
Keywords: Growth, Partnership, Planning
the Three Of Wands isn't a star or beginning, you're also no where near completion yet.
This is a really hard spot, at least it is for me. You've got this project going, you've started which is the hardest spot, you might be feeling good, but your in a spot where your still working hard but your not yet seeing the big results yet.
This card is also supposed to be talking about bringing other people in on what your working on, so at this point for me its time to bounce some ideas off mama, she doesn't always bet what I'm bathering about but sometimes just talking to her out loud and having that support can help me over the hump.

[Tarot Challenge] March Tarot Challenge
Tumblr media
Hello my dear followers, mutuals, soul family members and other tarot enthusiasts!
I would love to interact with you guys more in a more active way and what could be better than a challenge?
What is the Monthly Tarot Challenge?
Simply put - Each month I’ll come up with a prompt for a tarot reading to be done that month. I would like those of you who have a tarot deck of their own, regardless of your level of experience or skill, to reblog the Challenge post, adding the result of the prompted reading. Or you can make a separate post with appropriate tags and ideally tagging me so I can easily find it. This way we can all try out of the box types of readings, no prejudice, no judgement, just good fun and possibly insight and enlightenment. What do you think? Shall we go for it? Let’s start with the March Tarot Challenge!
March Tarot Prompt
Deck Interview!
What is your general vibe?
What kind of readings suit you best?
What do you think about me as a tarot reader?
How can we best collaborate?
Any message you have for me right now.
You might remember I did this exact interview with my Tarot of Casanova Deck.
Pick a deck of yours and ask it the questions above, pull the cards, record the outcome and share it with us here!
It doesn’t matter whether you interview a new deck or a deck you have been using for years.
It doesn’t matter whether you are an advanced tarot reader or you have just begun with cartomancy.
Few lines or keywords are enough as a result, though I hope you can write more as this is your personal conversation with your deck, possibly a tool you’re gonna be using for years to come.
And because my interview with Tarot of Casanova went so well, here is my entry for this month’s challenge.
The Slavic Legends Tarot
Deck Interview!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What is your general vibe? - Ace of Pentacles
This deck is a seed of abundance and pleasure. It goes to the roots of a matter, making each reading blossoming with wisdom. It’s both vastly knowledgeable but also sort of humble and down-to-Earth. It might not use flashy imagery but its messages go deep and reveal the truth. This deck represents the beauty and genius of a common sense which might be sometimes neglected by tarot readers. The Slavic Legends Tarot has the potential to truly expand its significance and grow onto the tarot reader, aka me.
What kind of readings suit you best? - II The High Priestess, IX The Hermit
This deck loves any readings seeking wisdom and revealing what’s hidden. It’s likely to poke my subconscious mind, forgotten memories, even dreams. This deck can explain it all, bringing light of wisdom to the darkness, pulling the information needed from the bushes, guiding the way and installing clarite where chaos used to be. This deck loves meaningful readings, yet those with a direct impact on the querent's everyday life. It’s not a deck to predict the future, it’s a deck to help the querent create their future and build on wisdom and knowledge.
What do you think about me as a tarot reader? - 7 of Wands
The Slavic Legends Tarot deck sees me as a resilient tarot reader, the one who will often take more than enough onto themselves, trying to do all the work and becoming even more motivated by any kind of opposition. Hard-headed is the world. I don’t back up when the reading sounds unpleasant, I dig deep and carry the information with dignity and over the hills. Maybe my readings aren’t cute and pretty but they hit the right spots.
How can we best collaborate? - XVIII The Moon, XI The Justice
Aww the Moon lady has two dogs just like me! Haha, so sweet! Anyway, we already know each other for a while with this deck. We mostly work very intuitively. This is the deck I can understand very well even when it comes with no booklet. We have a certain mental connection. See the crescent moon glowing at the lady’s head? That’s the clarity of intention. Whatever I ask this deck, it comes with a clear information and message. I respect this deck greatly and it respects me in return, the balance is constantly present. As long as we can maintain a harmonious relationship, this deck is likely to bring plenty of wisdom and joy into my life.
Any message you have for me right now. - 2 of Wands
The vast horizons are awaiting me and my exploring. There’s still so much to learn and so much to experience. I should never stop wondering, craving, and being curious. Life can become an adventure, shall I decide to take the leap and start the journey. And I don’t need to be afraid as I’m going to be guided by a map and protected.
Thank you for participating in the challenge!!
