[Tarot Article] Reading Tarot for Yourself
Tumblr media
Hello my dear followers and random visitors of this blog!
Let’s discuss the topic of reading tarot and other types of divination cards for oneself today. I have heard multiple times that even experienced readers face difficulties when trying to read cards for themselves and so it’s surely worth it to cast some light on this.
Personal Journey
When I started with tarot I was reading cards only for myself. That was 17 years ago. I wouldn’t dare to read for anybody else, unless I could see there was some relevance in what the cards say to me. Once I felt slightly more confident, I read cards for close family members and friends. About 3-4 years ago I started reading cards for online friends and strangers online. This was my personal journey. As you see, I always read tarot for myself, right from the very start and I do so up to this day.
And yes, sometimes the messages can be a bit confusing but that happens when I read for others, too. I have no real problem reading tarot for myself and I can share some tips on how you can enjoy this part of tarot practice, too, if you are currently struggling.
How to read cards for yourself
Tarot for yourself is the same as doing the reading for your querents. Only your querent is you. In theory, it should be easier because you already know everything about yourself, your signs, your life situation, your relationships, etc., right? So why does it seem more difficult for many readers?
The possible explanation is that you can’t be unbiased about yourself. You always approach a reading with a subconscious wish on how it should look, what’s the answer you want to see in the cards. This might taint your vision, your intuition might get foggy, suddenly the cards make no sense and you are left more bewildered than before, enlightenment and insight didn’t happen for you. How to fix this? How to become unbiased about yourself?
Start with questions where you don’t care what the result is and you are open to any answer!
When doing reading for yourself, try to first do readings where you genuinely don’t care about the result. Ask about things where you are open to any outcome. Meaning - don’t ask about your future spouse because you do have preferences there. 😀 Ask about something neutral or even about things you feel zero interest in. That way, it’s more likely for you to be unbiased and see a clear answer in the cards. You can browse pinterest for tarot spreads inspirations and just try some of them out, preferably the ones where you don’t care what the result is going to be. If you want to try a relationship couple reading, do it with a person you don’t love nor dislike, someone you feel neutral about. Just to be clear here, this is not the final stage, this is only the beginning. You will be able to do readings about things that matter to you in time. 🙂
Many people turn to self reading at times of stress or turmoil going on in their life and that might also cause troubles. When your own mind is a mess, it’s very likely to affect your cards, too. You might experience more confusion from the reading.
Calm your mind and soul down before reading for yourself!
Whatever technique works for you, use it. Meditation, hot bath, listening to music, gardening, yoga, jogging, a walk outside, breath work, exercise, dancing, reading a book, staring at a wall… Try to calm yourself down before the tarot reading so you don’t approach your cards agitated and on the verge of blowing out. With your mind becoming more peaceful, you are more likely to see clear messages in your cards.
It often happens that people are unsatisfied with the answer and keep asking again and again the same question. Stop that. Life ain’t a rose garden, you won’t always get the kind of answer you want.
Learn to accept uncomfortable, negative, even hurtful information without them ruining your day!
Nothing in life is permanent. Hard times pass, life hurricanes blow over. If you see something you don’t like in the cards, don’t waste time asking repeatedly. What tarot shows is something based on the current situation. Stop trying to change the cards and better change something about your life and reality. Some things are inevitable, even the more hurtful ones. When my mom had cancer, my cards never said she’s not going to make it. They kept saying I’m going to become responsible for the entire household and make my own decisions. It was clear what cards meant by it. And I did everything to help mom but at the same time I prepared for the worst case scenario, I overtook every single responsibility mom was still trying to keep for herself. When she truly passed away, it was devastating but it didn’t break me down and it didn’t throw my life into chaos because I already had everything in my hands. I didn’t want to see those messages in the cards but I had to accept them so I could cope and adapt. This is an extreme example but it will work with less dramatic unfavourable life situations, too.
Even if you follow the above suggestions, you might still feel confused sometimes about your cards.
Don’t be afraid to ask!
Brainstorm with other tarot readers about the cards and possible meanings. Sometimes other people notice tiny details about the cards you overlooked. Other people have different perspectives on the meanings than you do and can come up with a possible explanation you would never think of. My friend, who also has a tarot blog @starwell-tarot would confirm that I sometimes send her my cards so I can discuss what they could possibly mean. And her different point of view and insight truly help a great deal. So don’t be afraid to discuss and ask and learn.
Never stop trying and practising!
Nobody is born an expert. With continued practice, knowledge and skill improvement come to you. Just keep trying. Don’t give up. Read for yourself. Do daily pulls for yourself. Try the variety of spreads available. Be creative and come up with your own types of readings. Participate in tarot challenges! (Very subtle self-promotion, right? 😂) Start a tarot journal. Do patchwork readings (just randomly laying down cards without a question on your mind and see what the cards tell you, you can combine with other divination tools like runes, oracle cards, Lenormand, etc., creating a patchwork collage). Simply do whatever brings joy to your tarot practice.
The basic rules for reading cards for yourself:
Try to be unbiased
Calm your mind
Accept and adapt to unwanted messages
Brainstorm with others
Keep trying and practising!
Thank you for reading this far!

The 5 of Pentacles is a tarot card that conveys a sense of hardship and struggle. In traditional tarot decks, the imagery often depicts two figures trudging through the snow, leaning on each other for support. They appear to be impoverished, with ragged clothing and bare feet, symbolizing a period of financial or material difficulty.
The card suggests a time of adversity and challenges, especially in the realm of material well-being. It may indicate financial setbacks, poverty, or a sense of being left out in the cold, both metaphorically and literally. However, despite the apparent difficulties, there is a glimmer of hope in the card. The stained glass window in the background symbolizes the potential for spiritual solace and guidance, emphasizing that while the material world may be challenging, there is still a source of inner strength and resilience.
In readings, the 5 of Pentacles encourages individuals to acknowledge and confront their current struggles. It prompts them to seek support from others, whether emotional or practical and to recognize that challenges are temporary. The card underscores the importance of inner strength, perseverance, and the potential for spiritual growth even in the face of external difficulties. Overall, the 5 of Pentacles serves as a reminder that tough times are a part of life, but with resilience and support, one can overcome adversity and emerge stronger on the other side.

Crazy tarot reading i just had~ documenting for future reference
Tonight I was doing a reading for myself because even though I enjoy doing readings for others, I don't do many indepth ones for myself so when i get the chance to do one for me i try to absorb as much informstion as possible. You don't have to read if you're just passing by, im doing this for myself. Anyways, one of the oracle cards introduces the idea that I need to "examine the underlying reason of my desires to reveal the true intention of them", to "understand where the desire comes from subconciously." I found this intresting as I've always been into in manifesting and espeically invested in it in the past few weeks. The very nature of manifestion is the will to obtain desires, so i felt that it was urgent to understand this message deeper.
The first card that came out was the moon, which is inherently about the sunconcious, dreams, hidden or alternate realities. At first this card only further affirmed to me that theres something sunconcious that i need to unviel about the nautre of what i want. But more traditionally, the moon represents a feminine figure, typically the mother. My second impression is that my current desires reflect something about the relationship with my mother, which is true. I want indepdence, freedom and autonomy from my mother. She has always had control over me, trying to influence what I wear, when I go out, how I spend my money, if it get a job or not. if I don't conform to what she wants me to do she will turn into the mother from carrie...
My desires stem from longing to be free. But that's not where the reading ended, I started pulling cards from my Marseille deck, which for those who don't know, it's basically the godfather of all tarot cards. Even the rider waite deck, the one that is considered the og, is based off this very deck. This deck is very special to me on a personal level and they have always been faithful to the truth of my situation.
I pulled the judgement, the lovers, 7 of pentacles. The judgement card in this deck is primarily about "awaking to your own spiritual nature" which I felt related alot to waking up to who you are, knowing that you are the fabric of reality, but even more so, that you are free. I may be experincing this now for my mother, but truly nothing can oppress me or have a hold over my spirit. In my belief system, demons don't possess you or control you, there is no hell except for the hell you experience when you're unbalanced or in an extreme polarity. I felt this card spoke to me as remembering where I come from, remaining in balance and staying connected to what tethers me to my true being, I am from heaven and I am free in my spirit, nothing can taint that except for me.
The second card was the lovers. In the deck I'm using this card has a larger spectrum of meaning, it isn't just about partnership or even about choice, the deck handbook says:
"Inclinations of the heart correspond to the will of heaven"
This is when i fully absorbed that the cards were telling me that my desires don't just come from a subconscious place but they come from the part of me that remembers where I'm from. my desires "correspond to the will of heaven". In manifestion we here so much about how the reason we want what we want is because we were meant to experience it. I felt that this message was very reminiscent of that idea, but even more so, the source of my desires is from the heart, from heaven. Perhaps the sunconcious itself is anchored to heaven in a way.
The 7 of pentacles. The minor or pip cards in this deck espeically depart from the meanings that readers are familiar with. In this deck, 7 of pentacles is about: "acceptance, something new is well recieved. Help and protection. Integrating into a system without loosing individuality."
Perhaps I'm being told that as I awaken to my true nature and realize that my desires align to the will of heaven, I am accepted and being protected, helped on the way without loosing my autonomy. And this gives me hope, I want to keep this message to the front of my mind as I go about the next few months.
In my reading I also got the message of transition and being "poised" for success, greatness and abundance. That I'm about to be submerged into the next era of life of which i am completely ready, qualified and capable of entering.
Lastly, I got the 7 of swords and "peace" reversed. This told me that I was going through a temporary period that I need to look inward instead of outward, to harmonize I need go within instead of seeking external validation, which is verbatim what the oracle deck said, which is funny how much that resonates with loa advice haha. And it's funny because the 7 of swords card does look like a guy trying to seek validation or certainity as he's checking behind him to see what's going, he's trying to validate how far he's gone or that he's not being caught instead of trusting himself. I feel this is me, I am not in the state of peace because I'm looking behind me, trying to validate how far I've come or that my place now isnt being compromised. I need to rely on my inner world and not seek outward validation, I will have peace when I trust myself and where I am.

The Moon
Although sometimes veiled in shadow, the moon is always full. She can shed light on our confusion or obscure it. She can bring our awareness to any deceptions lingering just under the surface. What truths will you uncover if you are brave enough to face what you fear to see?
Fears & Anxieties, Unseen Truth, Cycles, A Need for Discernment, Deception (most often self-deception), Obscurity.
On occasion, this card appearing in a reading can indicate that the reader is currently swept up by their own fears and doubts. In such cases, The Moon card can indicate that the rest of the cards are only reflecting that chaotic state of mind, and not a true depiction of all the energies at play in a situation.

The Fool
The fool is often pictured in peasant clothing carrying a pack tied to a staff. Sometimes there is a small dog or a cliff. The story goes that with all of his possessions in his small pack, he travels with no real destination. The fool has questions and wants to know what's out there as his head is filled with curiosity and excitement for adventure. He's so wrapped up in this feeling that he doesn't notice the chasm in front of him. The small dog tries to warn him but what isn't known is if the fool listens or continues to blunder blindly forward.
With the fool being card 0 of 21 of the major arcana, it's known to be a card of endless possibilities. The pack that he carries symbolizes that he carries all he needs to complete his journey if only he opens the sack and makes use of what's inside. The fool is on his way to a new beginning. Originality and eccentricity also come to mind.
This card can also carry a warning of sorts. While it's good to enjoy all that's around you, you still need to be careful of how and where you step.
When in the upright position, the fool can symbolize beginnings, innocence, spontaneity, and freedom.
When reversed, it can symbolize holding back, recklessness, and risk taking.

Tarot Tuesday - Ten of Pentacles
Whales are associated with compassion and knowledge of life and death. their long lifespans allow them to gain clarity on what matters in life, and through their constant hard work, they are able to gain a level of prosperity that will remain with them long into the future. The ten of pentacles is a sign that a journey has come to an end. Success follows those who work hard and remain charitable. Just as the whale swims confidently towards its wealth, we should rejoice in the security we have worked so hard to earn.

learning each tarot card: some tips & how i did it! (preview)
When I first started reading tarot, learning and studying the cards seemed sooo daunting. There's 78 cards and as a capricorn rising, I was like, I'm gonna memorize them all. and that quickly fell apart because Memorization is not the key. If you want to understand and learn tarot, there's a few different ways you can do so.
1. Read about the story the tarot is telling.
Each card is just one specific place in a story. Read up on the overall story these cards are telling on a large scale and on a small scale. What's going on in one specific card story-wise?
I've learned that association is the best method for...

[Tarot Challenge] March Tarot Challenge
Tumblr media
Hello my dear followers, mutuals, soul family members and other tarot enthusiasts!
I would love to interact with you guys more in a more active way and what could be better than a challenge?
What is the Monthly Tarot Challenge?
Simply put - Each month I’ll come up with a prompt for a tarot reading to be done that month. I would like those of you who have a tarot deck of their own, regardless of your level of experience or skill, to reblog the Challenge post, adding the result of the prompted reading. Or you can make a separate post with appropriate tags and ideally tagging me so I can easily find it. This way we can all try out of the box types of readings, no prejudice, no judgement, just good fun and possibly insight and enlightenment. What do you think? Shall we go for it? Let’s start with the March Tarot Challenge!
March Tarot Prompt
Deck Interview!
What is your general vibe?
What kind of readings suit you best?
What do you think about me as a tarot reader?
How can we best collaborate?
Any message you have for me right now.
You might remember I did this exact interview with my Tarot of Casanova Deck.
Pick a deck of yours and ask it the questions above, pull the cards, record the outcome and share it with us here!
It doesn’t matter whether you interview a new deck or a deck you have been using for years.
It doesn’t matter whether you are an advanced tarot reader or you have just begun with cartomancy.
Few lines or keywords are enough as a result, though I hope you can write more as this is your personal conversation with your deck, possibly a tool you’re gonna be using for years to come.
And because my interview with Tarot of Casanova went so well, here is my entry for this month’s challenge.
The Slavic Legends Tarot
Deck Interview!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What is your general vibe? - Ace of Pentacles
This deck is a seed of abundance and pleasure. It goes to the roots of a matter, making each reading blossoming with wisdom. It’s both vastly knowledgeable but also sort of humble and down-to-Earth. It might not use flashy imagery but its messages go deep and reveal the truth. This deck represents the beauty and genius of a common sense which might be sometimes neglected by tarot readers. The Slavic Legends Tarot has the potential to truly expand its significance and grow onto the tarot reader, aka me.
What kind of readings suit you best? - II The High Priestess, IX The Hermit
This deck loves any readings seeking wisdom and revealing what’s hidden. It’s likely to poke my subconscious mind, forgotten memories, even dreams. This deck can explain it all, bringing light of wisdom to the darkness, pulling the information needed from the bushes, guiding the way and installing clarite where chaos used to be. This deck loves meaningful readings, yet those with a direct impact on the querent's everyday life. It’s not a deck to predict the future, it’s a deck to help the querent create their future and build on wisdom and knowledge.
What do you think about me as a tarot reader? - 7 of Wands
The Slavic Legends Tarot deck sees me as a resilient tarot reader, the one who will often take more than enough onto themselves, trying to do all the work and becoming even more motivated by any kind of opposition. Hard-headed is the world. I don’t back up when the reading sounds unpleasant, I dig deep and carry the information with dignity and over the hills. Maybe my readings aren’t cute and pretty but they hit the right spots.
How can we best collaborate? - XVIII The Moon, XI The Justice
Aww the Moon lady has two dogs just like me! Haha, so sweet! Anyway, we already know each other for a while with this deck. We mostly work very intuitively. This is the deck I can understand very well even when it comes with no booklet. We have a certain mental connection. See the crescent moon glowing at the lady’s head? That’s the clarity of intention. Whatever I ask this deck, it comes with a clear information and message. I respect this deck greatly and it respects me in return, the balance is constantly present. As long as we can maintain a harmonious relationship, this deck is likely to bring plenty of wisdom and joy into my life.
Any message you have for me right now. - 2 of Wands
The vast horizons are awaiting me and my exploring. There’s still so much to learn and so much to experience. I should never stop wondering, craving, and being curious. Life can become an adventure, shall I decide to take the leap and start the journey. And I don’t need to be afraid as I’m going to be guided by a map and protected.
Thank you for participating in the challenge!!
I'm always grateful for any feedback.

The Rider–Waite divinatory meaning of this card suggests: triumph, the excessive degree in everything, conquest, triumph of force. It is a card of great force, in love as well as in hatred: it can indicate great prosperity or great misery. Reversed - the same but the results are disastrous.
The Ace of swords can also represent new information or communication, new beginnings and possibilities, bad news or good news, ability to think clearly without emotional influence and conceptualization, ability to reinvent ones ideas time and time again.

The Ace of swords -  overanalyzing tarot pt 1
the the suit of swords in tarot entails the exploration of the mind; the different ways we engage with ideas, concepts, principals and the different ways we go about communicating thoughts to other people. naturally we should begin with the ace of swords.
Tumblr media
One of my fav books on tarot which actually happens to be a guidebook to its corresponding tarot deck, Tarot Apokalypsis, written by Erik C. Dunne and Kim Huggens, had this to say about the ace of swords:
‘‘What must come before word, what must come before thought? What must become before memory? what cannot be seen, yet must come before seeing? I am speech, but i am silent I am spoken of yet I am ineffable. I am the most basic principal necessary for the step from nothing, to choas to something.’‘
The ace of swords is the abstract coming in the form of a thought, its takes the messy, fragmented parts of an idea and gives it the structure to be formed into an idea. Results from a 2020 study showed that people may have 6,000 thoughts per day, yet not all of those thoughts are given meaning. Not all of them get the chance to develop into something, but the ones that do form the basis of a belief.
The ace of swords represents the thoughts we give power to over others. the crown the ace of swords is often paired with throughout different decks is supposed to signify victory, but in this context it represents the status we give thoughts as opposed to the 6,000 other thoughts that pass through our mind a day.
Divinatory meaning- upright and reversed
reflect on the thoughts you give power to every day. what ideas and thoughts do you give meaning, and how does the meaning you attach to these thoughts impact you. how do your fleeting thoughts form the basis of a belief? this card appears when you’re starting to understand something for the first time, when you’re building the foundational knowledge to understand a larger concept or idea.
in reversed, it gives me the impression of failing to understand the thoughts that pass you by or lacking the foundational knowledge of a concept or skill. it denotes that you’re needing to get back to basics of something and ensuring understanding of it before continuing.
The ace of swords as a unifying principal
tarot of apokalpysis attaches the ace of swords to the idea of cosmology and how we individually understand how the world came to be. it says;
‘’this assumption of cosmic order is necessary for further assumptions to be made, and its upon this foundation that we build everything else. This refers not only to religion or myth, science to too must build its own cosmology, (or more appropriately, a paradigm) within which is may refer to the laws it has set and decide upon the questions it wants to answer ’’
The ace of swords being connected to this idea of a cosmology or paradigm gives it a more sophisticated interpretation, allowing us to understand the cards that follow the ace of swords. For example, if the ace of swords is a paradigm that sets the basis for understanding a larger topic, then the two of swords is differentiating between ideas and comparing different paradigms to one another. allowing them to compete for accuracy.
The big bang theory is an example of a paradigm, it allows us to understand how the world came to be. The creation story told in genesis, the norse myth and saga of creation, these are all ways in which people form their basis of understanding of the world and our purpose in it.
The ace of swords could be the assumptions we have that allow other assumptions to be made on top of that, forming a foundation for an opinion or paradigm. It’s the pre-requisite understanding of a concept, for example, to understand algebra you would have to understand multiplication, division, adding etc. To understand chemistry you have to understand an atom, its qualities and the various forms matter takes.
Ace of swords paired with other cards
The ace of swords is a hypothesis in early stages, not yet tested or verified. if the ace of swords becomes paired with the ten of swords, its a hypothesis thats been prematurely dismissed or falsified before it had the chance to grow.
if paired with the 7 of swords, its a person selectively taking what they feel is true about an idea or paradigm, and leaving what contradicts their ideas, instead of adopting and integrating the whole idea to fit the truth. for example, Christians using the bible only when it fits their worldview, not when it contradicts it.
when paired with the tower, its an idea that disrupts an existing structure or assumption. Think Kepler revolutionizing how we understand the planets orbit around the sun, developing the three laws of planetary motion.
Astrology of the ace of swords
the ace of swords refers to gemini, libra and aquarius. All three signs interact with the development and communication of ideas in interesting ways. All three signs are constantly thinking, analyzing, comparing ideas, and creating new ones. Aquarius is innovative and wants to disrupt models of how we think, gemini allows space for several ideas to exist at once, and libra wants to be able to choose between ideas without hurting anyones feelings.

The Hierophant (V)
Tumblr media
Breaking rules. Rejecting orthodox ways and tradition. You begin to think for yourself for once and make your own decisions and live by your own rules. It can be time when you deliberately search for a new path to take, aware that the path you have tread for so long is not the only one.
There is a great sense of freedom and a lifting of oppression. The Hierophant reversed may represent the priest or nun who leaves their order or it may suggest that you have changed religion. Following another set of beliefs instead of the old ones. You may be questioning authority or behaving immorally. You may leave school, college or any formal training institute. It is a time of feeling and acting rebelliously.
An unconventional relationship, such as a homosexual relationship or a couple who reverse the traditional roles such as stay at home fathers while the mother works.  You may decide not to go with tradition and not marry.  You may be causing a scandal by behaving inappropriately or immorally. Perhaps you have done something that you feel ashamed of. You may feel you have sinned and fear or face excommunication from friends, family and even the community at large.  You may have impure thoughts about another. Infidelity and indiscretion. Your conscience may be bothering you.
On the other hand you may be dreadfully clinging to  old habits and beliefs. You may feel sanctimonious,  righteous and arrogant. He can suggest that you are extremely judgemental where others are concerned. With blinkers on you go through life thinking that you know it all and feel superior to others.
When The Hierophant reverses he can represent the disgraced spiritual leader or someone of importance caught in an uncompromising act. The Health Guru could be caught eating McDonalds or the Spiritual leader who absconds with church funds.

Tarot; Suit Meanings
Tumblr media
When beginning using The Tarot, learning all the meanings of the cards can be a daunting task. However, there are way more than 78 x 2 meanings you have to learn about the cards, you also have to learn the Suits, The meaning of Queens, Kings, Knights ect.
Today I’ll be starting off with learning the suits and their meanings. This is an amazing base to start your tarot jouney. But before I begin, I’d like to make it known that The Tarot tells a story beginning to end, and this story and the meaning of these cards are meant for the reader to interpret their own meaning. Some readers don’t even learn and research the “text book” meanings of each card, they create meanings based of the imagery, and the story of the cards that connects to them the most. This is one of the main reasons why The Tarot has so many different meanings. If you’re just beginning to read tarot, I do recommend learning the “text book” meanings as a backbone for your tarot journey. In time, you’ll develop and use your intuition for your readings and you’ll notice that your own interpretation of these cards may detour from the “actual” meaning and that’s perfectly okay.
These suits fall under the Minor arcana which represents everyday situations
Tumblr media
The Suit of Cups;
