Dark Wood Tarot - by Sasha Graham, art by Abigail Larson
II – High Priestess
I’ve decided with this one to start summarizing what the book says, rather than quoting directly from it so much. (To avoid any copyright issues.)
Description: The card is mostly tones of soft green. A forest with a full moon in the background, two large trees on either side of the image have the letters ‘D’ and ‘W’ on them, for Dark Wood. A young woman with flowing brown hair stands between them. She wears a gauzy, flowing green gown and a crescent moon necklace, and holds a scroll that says ‘tarot.’ The ground beneath her has subtle ripples, as if she is standing in water.
My thoughts: It’s interesting that the image is primarily in soft greens and grays; the eye goes right to the full moon, then the tan and brown of the woman’s face and hair, then the scroll. She’s looking straight out of the image at the viewer, smiling, as if she’s happy to see you and speak to you. She has opened the scroll and is offering it so that the word ‘tarot’ can be read, as if she’s ready to start teaching you about it. The full moon is right over her head, so that she can take in its power; the branches in the background almost seem to suggest antlers, with the way they’re positioned.
What the book says: (edited) The High Priestess holds a scroll and silently unrolls it. The word ‘tarot’ appears. This is the book of your life, containing every possibility, every imaginable outcome. It is ever changing and all encompassing. The High Priestess is the blueprint of your soul… she is everything you were, are, and will be.
The two trees - the dual polarities of the material world - dark and light, etc. About the High Priestess: her secret is silence. Silence is the space of manifestation. Her dress dissolves into water because she is the source of all waters found in the tarot deck; she is the water that sustained you and made you who you are. The full moon reflects the cyclical nature of the seasons and your life. She is the space beyond word, image and sound.
Silence. Secrets. Darkness. Evolution of the soul. Activated intuition. Lunar cycles. Inner knowledge.

How I try to "study" tarot cards
First, trying to overcome the "you don't do that much readings", "what's the point anyway ?" "this is useless for u"...but then, when i had some burst energy to get shit done, and grab my decks, find stories and meaning inside the picture, here approximately how i do things:
i'm a chaotic person, so my "studies" are chaotic too, even tho i have some sort of procedure to follow.
Arts is one of my drugs, and my method is basically the same as an art/illustration/painting study u do in first year of art history faculty.
I also pick methods of some tarot readers i like, but even tho the questions seems pretty pertinent, i don't, for now, use them.
So:
I. Describing from general picture to details:
Characters/elements
Colors
Dynamics
Composition
II. Symbolics/interpretations
from myself (that's the point of intuitive reading)
from the tarot deck's creator
III. the things that's disturbed me in the card(s) (the Biases)
i think this point is kinda important, it's essentially about the biases you discern in the card and so the vision of the creator(s).
About diversities and how it's depicted. (Queer's, POC, and female representations. I don't have decks with disabled representations, so that can clearly be a thing too obviously). Your own personal relations to certain aspects or interpretations or characters.
(just to clarify at this point, i'm a white, able (for now, idk what's life as in stock for me so), queer person, but u know, the world and life itself is about fucking diversity, and "norms" doesn't exist and are fucking bullshite. And that's a very shortly resume of my pov, but that's not the point here, and i'm too lazy to elaborate) (just trying to keep educating myself at best and not be a fully shitty person) (i hope at least)
Anyway. fucking tarot. Here we are. So.
Is the POC characters are present, and how they are represented ? For example if they're nudes, partially nudes, or in traditional clothes (i don't say here that nudity and cultural clothes are a bad things at all, but ->), is that a western exoticism/colonialism depiction of the character ? Or the creator(s) are from that depicted ethnicity, and/or it's historically and culturally accurate ? Is the others white people in the decks are nude too, in that case, nudity is not that relevant, in at least the racism/exoticism bias ? Are they sexualised ? Are they depicted in position of power or not (the queens, kings, emperor, empress etc cards for example) etc etc.
Same things with female depictions: dressed or nudity (sexualised ?) ? is this relevant or not in that deck's case ? Interactions with the others characters from the cards ? Power Positions or not ? Active or passive ? etc etc.
At this point, it's more like, if there any queer representations at all, and how they're diverse (only lesbian or gay ? or there is more like trans, hermaphrodite, enby, pan etc ?) (there is more and more queer decks and i'm really happy about that)
Same with disability, if there any, how they are represented ? is there a diversity in type of disability ? etc etc.
mention the things that's trigger u personally maybe ? If you don't resonate on one way or another with classical interpretations or elements in particular. (for me that'll be for example, the notion of pregnancy/motherhood) If the character(s) act/seems like a dick in your opinion.
(special mentions for the White Numen deck by AlbaBG (POC, soft queer dynamics) and the Sefirot deck by Causa creations (POC and wonderful diversed queer representations, and older badass women's representations too *chef's kiss*)
*petting and kissing my roommate's cat on my lap at this point*
or just avoid human based decks and take animals based decks instead. or insects. or plants idc. This last ones are all a good option . Humans are so overrated anyway.
IV. relations between the cards, the context
Gosh how i hated context when i was doing my art history studies painting, even tho i know this is THE most important thing in like, the entire universe of art, history, literature, archeology, everything.
In tarot universe, what i mean more by context for now, is the relation of the card in the entire deck, and/or with certain other cards of the deck, or comparing to the same card but from another deck. Especially if the creator(s) had made things well and there is some cohesion, red line between the cards or the different suits. Not just random illustrations here and there for each arcanas.
How do they suit in the story line of the deck ? Between the precedent et following card ? Are they mirroring other card(s) ? How so ? Are they "completing" other card(s) ? How their dynamics can be seen with certain other card(s) ? How can they interact between each other ? etc.
What happened ? what is happening ? or what's going to happen inside the card ?
CREATE STORIES.
V. so in conclusion,
All this seems pretty complete, and dense, but as i say earlier, my own "studies" are not that's thorough, and well organized. I'm chaotic, remember. I don't study the cards in order, i think that's not very essential to do so and i don't wanna pushed myself out on forcing me on doing that.
But hear me out, a word of wisdom:
MINDMAPS.
fucking sweet mindmap, i love mindmaps so much. They're visual, fuckingly chaotic and you don't have to bother to make paragraphs or whatever. U can reorganise more properly after if you wanna.
and if you're visual, make shitty sketches of the cards and all.
Anyway, just make it the most comfortable for you, comprehensive, and add notes, thoughts etc, easily after if needed.
So, that's it, i'm out for now.
There's lot of "fucking" in that post. Mmmh. did i care. Not really.
