I think it's high time we talk about Taryn Duarte.
Don't mistake me, I don't like Taryn either. But I don't consider her weak, or a coward. Yes, up until the third book, I would've thought those terms fitting, but from the third book on? No.
For starters, Taryn took the safe route for securing herself a position among the fae. A good marriage would financially stabilize her, be her protection, and perhaps would grant her a companion as well. She was even willing to buy her sister's hatred just to stay safe. Taryn didn't wish to put her life out on the line, so she didn't.Taryn was being smart.
And then, for months and months, she had to watch her husband practically cheat on her, by what would be 'mortal standards' in her opinion because for years she's seen and came to believe that the faerie folk don't treat marriage the same as humans do. She still took that in stride, for the sake of her safety, and stepped on her emotions and stayed with Locke.
But when her child came into the picture, Taryn Duarte – the girl who watched her parents get murdered by her adoptive father and tolerated years of bullying among the gentry and then blatant cheating by her husband – completely lost it.
She lost it so bad that she put a blade in her husband's throat and ended his life. Then, amongst the panic of now being a murderer and having murdered the father of her child, she used her wits and threw him in the sea to draw suspicion away from herself. And then, she ran away to her twin sister's house, who hadn't murdered Locke, to exchange places for a day so she could save her and her child's life.
But that's not where it ends. She figured out the danger The Ghost was to the High King and High Queen by staying in the palace to protect her sister. And knowing his true name, she saved the king ans queen, which was a result of – by her own admission – Locke severely underestimating her.
Taryn Duarte not only survived a terrible marriage with a terrible husband, she survived murdering him, she survived getting away from the said murder, and she helped Jude and Cardan survive as well.
And amidst it all, she might've actually found the love she was looking for, too.
Underrated and underestimated, not only she survived her hardships, she also unknowingly put her twin sister back on the throne of Elfhame, taking herself as high as she possibly could among the gentry by being the twin sister to the High Queen.
An honorable mention; She tricked the High King of Elfhame into thinking that she is Jude and freeing her father from the oath to the crown.
So yes, I don't like Taryn. But she is, by no means, weak, or dumb, or a coward. I would even go as far as saying that she is more of a fox than Locke ever was.

“First I am going to kill you,” she tells him. “And then I am going to eat you.” I LOVE Grima
HE LIVES
“You don’t know how long I’ve waited to hear those words,” he says. “You don’t want me dead.” Jude has dropped his standards to the floor
“I have not made myself easy to love,” he says, and I hear the echo of his mother’s words in his.”His mom messed. him. up.
Nooooo I’m at the epilogue 😭
I finished it 💔, at least Cardan got to try gummy worms

Taryn Duarte in book one when she successfully romanced Locke:
Tumblr media
Versus Taryn Duarte in book 2 after having wisened up to how Locke really is:
Tumblr media
She is now paying the price for her spinelessness in book 1, and is fully aware of it. So I kind of feel bad for her now.

Someone needs to point out to Taryn that she has a weird preference for men who betray her twin sister for their own selfish gain (Locke and The Ghost).
Edit: sorry guys I need to finish re-reading the wicked king and start re-reading the queen of nothing because apparently The Ghost was FORCED (by Locke) to betray Jude (because Locke had his true name). Lmao I can't believe I don't remember this.

"Cardan stands over me. His jacket is thrown on a nearby chair, the velvet soaked through with some dark substance. His white sleeves are pulled up, and he's washing my hands with a wet cloth. Getting the blood off of them"- The Queen of Nothing (Ch. 17)
Can I talk about this scene for a moment, because it really shows how much Cardan loves Jude. Here is a man who had been raised as a spoiled, neglected, cruel prince, caring for a mortal girl. He is helping her when she is in pain, and he is by her side even though he is High King of the Fae, and she is an (though technically not anymore) exiled mortal. He could have easily called for a servant to clean her, he could have given her her own room, he could have left her side, left her to die on the table. But no, here he is, lowering him self to her side, abandoning all the egotistical ways of thinking he was taught, and doing such a simple action, however unfitting of a king, because he doesn't trust anyone else with her to do it right.

Cardan: Why would you think any of this was a good idea?  Jude: Probably because I’m a dangerous sociopath with a long history of violence.  Cardan:  Jude: I don’t know how you keep forgetting this.

Reasons why Taryn is such a well written Anti-Hero:
SHE'S A TEENAGER. Taryn is at that "Prologue age" of 16-24 that literally means she doesn't know how to be specific in what she wants. She has hormones, She's not well versed in socializing, and has tons of insecurities that any teenager has. Nobody is really happy at the age of 16-24, and she probably hesitated on most of her decisions.
She is idealistic. That's why she felt guilty after she chose locke, because haha, the handsome guy isn't actually gonna solve all of your problems. At that age, who isn't delusional about their first real relationship??? She can't see the red flags because it never slapped her in the face. And jude was also Idealistic. Taryn chose the Class Clown, but Jude also chose the Hypocrite Prince. Glad both of them are dead.
Taryn is used to praise. She was the Extroverted sister. She wasn't that criticised or judged because she fit in. So when she makes a horrible mistake, she spiraled. Taryn betrayed her sister, and Jude helped her still. Madoc accepted Taryn because she was obedient to him. Oriana praised her more, so she felt more important than Jude. All of this further validated the fact that she doesn't really know the gravity of her choices, which she isn't emotionally equipped to shoulder. Everybody babied her decisions and forgave her. I mean, who ignores their twin sister after dating the guy she's been hanging out with??? Jude was so ready to forgive as long she apologized first?? Taryn is still immature.
In contrast to all of this, Jude embodies the characteristics of a Hero. She is NOT a hero because she is power hungry, ruthless, and vicious. BUT she chooses the much more beneficial options, disciplines herself to train, and relies on the strengths of others for help. She is Humble, she doesn't break easily, and she most definitely do not want validation from those people who look down on her. She's a really well-written morally grey villain that has the best heroic Characteristics.

i wonder how madocs character will play out in the prisoner’s throne.
from reading the prologue it looks like jude still cares very much about madoc, and apparently jurdan planned to save madoc but wanted to wait it out?
madoc has a very bad reputation in elfhame and the undersea. he’s the cause for many of the political problems and deaths since the beginning of TFOTA series.
The Stolen Heir ended in Oak freeing Madoc from lady nore and ordering Tiernan to take him to Elfhame, or somewhere else that’s safe only if Jude and Cardan decided not to take him back in. Whether Jude decides to accept him back to elfhame or not, we don’t know. but i can surely belive that Madoc would want to work with Jude to get Oak back. We’ll see how that goes in 26 days!!!
So now i have MANYYY questions, is this the book where Madoc redeems himself to elfhame and his family? will he play the hero? or is he going to keep betraying jude and cardan?
will he die???… or will jude lift his exile and welcome him back to elfhame?
but wouldn’t that be a problem for elfhame and the undersea? if jude lifted his exile then i believe it would be a bad look for jude and cardan. to forgive a person who was responsible for weakening Orlagh, for breaking his oath to the blood crown, betraying elfhame, and helping Balekin set out his plan to kill the royal family. Now that has got me wondering if that’s Jude’s political problem by the end of the book?
thoughts?
the prisoners throne comes out less than a month from now !! WOOHOO! so i feel the neeed to talk about some things that we might see in this book. Also apparently the prisoners throne will have 25 chapters!!

Welcome to another chaotic update, I’m about 80% so yeah
1. Are you kidding me rn?! I wasn’t expecting much from Locke but attempting to murder your fiancés sister the NIGHT BEFORE YOUR WEDDING! I don’t know WHAT Taryn sees in him
2. Vivi, I love you girl, but if you literally have to remove Heathers traumatic memories so that things work out maybe this isn’t the best set up?
3. I’m low key glad that the ghost is the one that betrayed Jude because I was getting scared it was the bomb, and she’s my favorite spy. I think Jude was too quick to judge all of them though
4. For an evil prince Balekin high key stinks at scheming, first of all Jude is an assassin/future queen not a drama major so idk why Balekin couldn’t tell she was faking being controlled by him, and also does he not know just how many guards are making sure that Cardan is safe? How is he expecting her to poison/stab him without being caught
5. The entirety of chapter 26 is 🥰, but I love when Cardan realizes how the brains of the people he’s with work “The three of you have one solution to every problem. Murder. No key fits every lock.” Cardan gives us all a stern look, holding a long-fingered hand with my stolen ruby ring still on one finger. “Someone tries to betray the High King, murder. Someone gives you a harsh look, murder. Someone disrespects you, murder. Someone ruins your laundry, murder. Yes Cardan, how did you not figure that out sooner?
6. Also Cardan said that thing about missing her and he gave her food 🥹

Jude: sometimes, I remember how happy Locke and Taryn were and I hate it so much because all I wanted then was to be loved and looked at and truly seen, even if just for a second
Also Jude: *is a slightly deranged knife wife who can and will scare away and stab anyone whether or not they try to harm her or Cardan*
