TaserBones
Fall Words: caramel, Pumpkin spice
Meet Ugly
Taserbones
It was the ugliest of meet uglies: Darcy was carrying a full drink carrier, traipsing down the street when she was sent sprawling by a big dude who brushed past her with only a muttered, insincere, “Sorry.”  Despite the pain of the hot liquid that had spilled on her, she made sure to get a good look at him, and added him to her shit list.
“This is not how caramel and pumpkin spice were meant to be consumed!” she muttered furiously, picking herself up off the ground carefully. Jane was going to be so disappointed, but Darcy didn’t have time to go back and get replacements. It would be Grumpy Science day for them all.
When she got to the lab, Jane wasn’t at her desk. She was staring at the tv monitor, watching the news.
“Bad news, Janey!” she declared. “My coffee run was obliterated by some jackass running me down. We’ll have to settle for the keurig today.”
Jane turned from the screen and noticed Darcy’s dripping, disheveled appearance.
“Oh my gosh, Darcy! Are you okay?”
“Other than some potential first degree burns, I’m fine,” Darcy shrugged, allowing herself to be fussed over. “I’m just mad. Who does he think he is to be running like that on a public sidewalk?”
Jane gestured toward the screen.
“The jack booted thugs have a man hunt going on right now for some escaped Hydra supporters. You might have accidentally got in the middle of that.”
Darcy paled as she watched the news update on the situation. “Yikes. I’m lucky he didn’t take me hostage or something.”
“You should really have those burns looked at,” Jane told her. “That looks worse than first degree.”
After an hour of trying to tough it out, Darcy let Jane take her to an Urgent Care. As she settled down in the waiting room, she took a quick glance around at the only other occupant—the mean looking, but hot dude who’d run her down.
She immediately fixed what she thought was a hostile glare on her face and felt for her taser in case he was the escaped Hydra creep. Seeing the glint of a Shield badge at his waist, she relaxed her grip on it, but not her glare.
He looked at her curiously, as if trying to remember where he’d seen her, then she saw the panic hit when he recognized her.
“Yeah, that’s right. I’m the innocent woman you knocked over this morning. Spilled hot coffee on myself and now I’m here.”
She held up her burned arm. He blanched.
“Aw, hell,” he swore. “You gonna sue?”
“I might,” she said haughtily. “Shield and I have never been on the best of terms ever since they stole my friend’s work and confiscated my Ipod. I’m still bitter about that. And you wrecked my pumpkin spice latte. That’s very hard to forgive.”
“Ooh. Yeah.”
He ran his hand through his jet black hair and squirmed in his chair. Darcy felt a twinge of satisfaction.
“Listen, I really am sorry about this morning. We’ve been chasing this guy for three years and he’s given us the slip multiple times. I was petrified I was going to lose him again.”
“Hmmph.” she grunted, unmoved.
Before she could go off on him, the door opened and another agent limped through on crutches. She watched Shieldthug leap to his feet and gallantly assist his companion, showing an extraordinary amount of care.
Darcy was called back to be seen and she expected that he would vanish conveniently and never be seen again, but when she’d been bandaged and instructed and went to settle up the bill, the receptionist shook her head.
“It’s all taken care of,” she smiled. “Have a nice day, Dr. Lewis.”
Confused, Darcy went back to work, mulling over the contradictions she’d seen in Mr. Careless Shieldthug.
The next morning, Darcy and Jane received a surprising delivery: their favorite coffee orders, correct down to the last pump. A large bouquet of flowers sat on Darcy’s desk, and a thick envelope rested beside it.
“Well, at least he’s suitably apologetic,” Jane commented, sipping on her coffee.
Darcy didn’t register anything else while she read the note in the envelope.
Dr. Lewis,
This is my apology for being a grade a jackass to you. At the very least I should have helped you up. My mama would be ashamed of me. I’ve seen the error of my ways and I hope you can forgive me.
                                                             Sincerely,
                                                                Brock
She wondered if he’d written it with help, but it did sound sincere. Darcy looked back in the envelope and gasped when she saw a familiar item that she hadn’t laid eyes on in a decade.
“My iPod!” she gasped. “Jane, he gave me my iPod back! Also, who’s Brock?”
A couple days later, she was still trying to find out information on the mysterious Brock Rumlow. A lot of his info was redacted, and though she probably could have done some hacking, she decided it wasn’t worth getting in Federal trouble.
“Visitor for you, Darcy!” Jane called.
Darcy emerged from her cozy spot in the corner to find Mr. Careless Shieldthug, aka Brock Rumlow, standing in front of her. He didn’t look mean this time, rather obviously nervous. It was almost cute.
“Agent Rumlow, I presume?” she asked, trying not to notice his incredible physique. Damn, the man was ripped.
“Yeah,” he admitted. “I wanted to see how you’re doing. That arm looked pretty painful.”
“It’s still sore, but it’s healing,” she told him. “But the iPod return did go a long way in winning my forgiveness, so good move. I guess I won’t sue Shield after all.”
She smirked at him, then let her eyes wander a bit. It wasn’t often such eye candy walked into their lab. Maybe she could take advantage of the opportunity.
“That’s good to know.” Brock said. “Hill heard about it and roasted my ass like never before.”
“Good for her. Maria is awesome!” Darcy agreed.
“You know her?”
“I had dealings with the Avengers when I was interning with Jane,” she explained. “And I got to meet a few Shield bigwigs as well. I don’t remember you, though.”
Brock looked away, an uncomfortable look crossing his face.
“I was deeply undercover back then,” he told her. “I worked with the Avengers some, but it was pretty limited.”
“Ah,” she acknowledged. “Fury probably made you crazy.”
“That’s the understatement of the century,” he snorted. “Funny enough, when I asked him about you, he rolled his eyes and said, “Don’t even get me started.” I knew then that I’d probably like you.”
Darcy burst out laughing.
“Hee-Hee! I love pissing off Fury. I think maybe we can be friends, after all, Brock. Let’s start over.”
“I like the sound of that,” Brock agreed, allowing a tiny, relieved smile to appear.

“You cannot be angry at me forever.”
Darcy ignored him and gave a passing lady a nod. The woman turned her face from Darcy.
Yes, she was truly a ruined woman.
“Darcy.”
“Watch me being angry forever.” She hissed at him.
“We are in a bad situation…” He told her diplomatically, putting her hand on the crook of his elbow. “But we both have no choice.”
“I could drown you in that pond.” She gave him a beatific smile.
Brock scoffed. “At least this party would be interesting then.”
She would NOT grin at this. Yes, this party was beyond boring -Lord Stark’s garden was not that great considering how rich he was -but she wouldn't agree with Brock, even on something that trivial.
“Your friend Jane is here. Let us talk to her.” Brock decided.
“Let us not.” Darcy tried to dig her heels in, but it was pointless. “I do not want her involved in this.”
“Too late, love.” His smile was so sweet it gave her a toothache. He then dragged her towards Jane.
“I hate you.” She grumbled.
“If you loved me, darling, this would be a very inappropriate engagement.”

Summary:
Growing up the adopted daughter of a smalltime crime lord, Darcy learns early on that family means everything. She learns the ins and outs of running a criminal enterprise, has a head for the strategic business side of things, even, but she also learns that such matters are not meant to concern her. The family business is for Odin's sons to inherit; backroom meetings in dingy warehouses are no place for the daughter he's always wanted better for.
But whether Odin wants her to or not, Darcy learns from observing: she learns patience, learns strategy, learns to assess risks and identify danger... and she learns how to recognize when a hand's been overplayed, too. So when her foolish, ambitious little brother makes an arrogant mistake he doesn't seem to realize will cost him his life, Darcy steps in and makes a deal with the devil.
It's a risk, but it's one worth taking: She'll marry Brock Rumlow, the infamous Crossbones, and tip him off about Thor's plans in exchange for sparing her brother's life. And she might even find some happiness along the way, too, if only she can figure out what it is about Brock's Second in Command that has her constantly on edge.

Help! My Groom Is Trying To Kill Me! (TaserBones)
Running for your life in a wedding dress and heels was generally not a good combination. Unfortunately for Darcy Lewis, she didn’t have a choice after overhearing her soon to be groom plotting against her. She didn’t know whether to be more angry at him for being Hydra, or herself for not picking up on it sooner. So much for any potential career as a spy.
She’d sent one quick text to Jane, then one to Tony, before abandoning her phone and fleeing the side door of the church. She was hoping they could hold off Ian, but who knows how many agents he had in the area?
Darting around a corner, she glanced behind her and spotted a couple of dark clothed individuals scanning the area on the opposite side of the street. Terrified, she gripped her small travel bag and headed down an alley, emerging toward a busy looking cafe, hoping to get lost in the crowd. She needed a chance to catch her breath and change into something less eye-catching. Sinking into a chair in the darkest corner, she kept a sharp eye out. It was mostly full of young couples, teens, and business types, but two men at the table closest to her stood out with their build and demeanor. Darcy tensed, hoping they weren’t more Hydra agents. They had badass written all over them. She leaned down and took off her heels, stuffing them into her bag and grabbing the flats instead. Hearing the door chime, she tensed, and sank down to the floor behind the soda dispenser.
Brock and Jack were enjoying a leisurely lunch when their people watching took a more interesting turn. A young woman in a lacey wedding dress entered the building, looking around nervously.
“Cold feet?” Jack guessed, looking at her in amusement.
Brock would have agreed, but then she passed by their table to sit in the dark corner, he saw the raw fear in her eyes and frowned.
“She’s scared to death.” Brock muttered.
The door chimed, and a tuxedo clad man came in, glancing around the room before approaching the girl at the counter and flashing a picture. The woman’s wide blue eyes got even wider and she looked frantic, scribbling something on a napkin and then holding it up for them to see.
Help! My Groom is trying to kill me. He’s Hydra.
The last word was triple underlined.
Immediately, Brock and Jack rearranged themselves to help hide her.
“You distract him, I’ll get her out of here,” Brock said in a low tone, subtly flashing his badge at the woman, who looked surprised and then relieved.
Jack got up and engaged the devious groom in conversation, while Brock stopped to whisper in the bride’s ear.
“There’s an emergency exit that way.”
Nodding, she gathered her skirt up and started cautiously towards the door, Brock keeping a sharp eye out.
Getting into a total stranger’s car, a big black suv, was perhaps risking the very thing she was fleeing from, but the sight of the Shield badge and the feeling in her gut had Darcy putting her trust in the rugged, extremely jacked individual who was guiding her. He was handsome in an intimidating kind of way and probably ate nothing but meat and vegetables. She could recognize the type.
He opened the back door for her.
“Stay down until I say so,” he ordered gruffly. “I have no idea how many could be on your tail.”
Darcy meekly obeyed, glad for the suv’s tinted windows. She wedged herself on the floor between the seats and took a few deep breaths, hoping not to hear gunshots or the squeal of tires in pursuit.
“Thanks, dude,” she spoke up after a few minutes. “For a second I thought you might be one of them. Sweet ride, by the way.”
“One of the perks of being a federal agent,” her savior replied. “And I did spend three years pretending to be one of them. It was weird.”
“I bet it was,” she said. “I’m Darcy Lewis and my ex-fiancé is Ian Boothby, in case you want to put out an APB on him.” She sighed. “I can’t believe I almost married a Hydra sicko. He had me completely fooled.”
“It happens,” he commented as he weaved through traffic with masterful precision. “I’m Brock Rumlow, by the way. My partner is Jack Rollins and your Ian is gonna be no match for the two of us. We’ve dealt with his ilk many times before.”
“That’s comforting to know,” she responded. “Jack is like two feet taller than Ian. I used to lovingly call him a “short king.” Turns out, he’s just a trash prince.”
Brock made an amused sound and she felt them merging onto the highway.
“Where are we going?” she queried.
“A friend of mine has a safe house a couple hours from here. You can hide out there for a while. Did you tell anyone you were running?”
“Only my best friend and also Tony Stark,” she admitted.
She could hear the surprise in his voice when he responded with “You’ve got Stark’s number?”
“Yeah. I lived at the Tower for a few months as an assistant for Jane Foster. I learned how to manage Tony as well. Sleep deprived scientists are a danger to themselves and others.”
“Wow.” Brock commented. “So you’re used to dealing with eccentric superheroes.”
“Yep. They have my back and I have theirs,” she proclaimed proudly.
He gave her the all clear to sit up finally and the rest of the drive passed uneventfully. They pulled into the driveway of an average looking brick ranch and she was ordered to wait in the car while he did a sweep.
Given the all clear, she finally climbed out and followed him into the house, heaving a sigh of relief.
“Nice dress, by the way,” Brock remarked.
“Thanks,” Darcy replied, a trifle startled by the obvious admiring glance he’d given her. His dark eyes were very expressive and left her with a funny feeling in her gut. “I saved for months for this. Effing Nazis.”
Brock grinned at her. “That’s the spirit. You’re remarkably calm after all this.”
“It’ll hit me later, I’m sure, but It’s not my first time running from baddies,” she explained. “ Associating with people who have a lot of enemies means multiple kidnappings and attempts to use me to get to them. Hence, my super powered taser.”
She pulled it out of her bag and showed it off. Brock’s eyebrows flew up as he examined it.
“Holy crap. That’s an illegal amount of volts. I love it.”
He nodded approvingly as he handed it back.
“Now that I know you’ve got some protection, I’m got to make some calls. Bedroom’s the second door on the right down the hall. Bathroom beside it.”
“Thanks, Brock,” she acknowledged gratefully. She kinda wished she’d met him before she’d met Ian. He was kinda intriguing in a gruff, brooding way.
When Brock got off the phone and returned to the living room, Darcy was there, looking much more comfortable in sweatpants and a large Captain America t-shirt. She was busily pulling pins out of her hair and releasing the updo, resulting in Dark hair spilling down her back. He stared for a second, then pretended nonchalance. Darcy Lewis was a dangerously beautiful woman.
“What’s the word?” she asked him.
“They’ve got Boothby and four of his cronies in custody. Sounds like you were the only planned target in this, but interrogation is ongoing. Dr. Foster sends her well wishes and reminds you to be cautious. Hill wants us to spend the night here to be on the safe side and we’ll get another update tomorrow morning.”
“Well, I’m glad it’s not another take over the whole city plot,” she mused. “Then Steve would have to beat up a bunch of dudes in the elevator again.”
Brock couldn’t help but grimace and she noticed, eyes widening.
“Wait, were you playing triple agent back then?”
He nodded, not eager to remember that time of his life.
“So you had to get beat up by Steve?”
He nodded again.
“Ouch, dude,” she said sympathetically. “I mean, you look like you could put up a good fight, but he’s ridiculous.”
“Absolutely,” Brock agreed. “But the worst part was a building falling on me.”
Her eyes bugged out.
“How are you even alive?”
“Sheer stubbornness and and incredible medical team,” Brock shrugged. “Helen Cho is a genius.”
“I agree with that, but now I need to hear the story. Distract me from the roiling mental turmoil and self loathing I’m experiencing right now.”
Brock wasn’t all that eager to rehash the past, but Darcy had just experienced a pretty awful betrayal by the man she’d loved. If she needed distraction, he’d help out. He had stories that would keep her entertained for quite some time.
It turned out, telling the stories to such a rapt listener as Darcy wasn’t all that unpleasant after all. In fact, he found himself enjoying it and talking about his family’s hijinks as well.
Hardened as he claimed to be, seeing Darcy laugh out loud at his mother’s attempts to set him up made him soften inside. She had a very pretty, very genuine laugh and he found himself hoping he’d run into her again someday.
Darcy had expected to not be able to sleep well after the very tumultuous day, but after some tossing and turning, found herself drifting off thinking about Brock’s muscular arms.
The next morning, after a call to Brock’s superior, they were given the all clear and instructed to take her to Stark Tower, which had better security than Darcy’s and Ian’s apartment. This time, she sat up front and allowed herself to relax.
“Thanks, Brock,” she told him, breaking the comfortable silence.
“You’ve said that before, but you’re welcome again,” he responded, the corner of his mouth tilting up.
“This time is for making me feel safe,” she explained. “I’ve had some not so great experiences with jack-booted shield thugs, so it’s nice to find some professionalism among you, if you get what I’m saying.”
Brock gave her a quick glance and then nodded.
“My momma raised me to respect women. If I’d been pervy, she’d find out and cut my balls off, if Hill or Romanoff didn’t get them first. I also respect your taser.”
Darcy chuckled.
“Smart man. Seriously, though, I wouldn’t mind running into you again in a few months, under less dire circumstances.”
He definitely grinned at that comment.
“Given who you hang around with, you probably will. Just so you know, I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to that.”
Darcy liked the promise in his tone and filed it away for later.

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self love 🤎
Ooh, thank you! (But how to choose only five???)
The first three are all Wintershock (Darcy/Bucky) and the last two are Taserbones (Darcy/Brock)
I've Been Waiting (For This Moment) All My Life - This is one of my absolute favourite things I've ever written. It brings me to tears every time.
In The Library - my first ever Discworld crossover, I wrote it purely for the conversation between Groot and The Librarian :-)
Dragon Rescue - another of my favourite things--Dragons!!
We Apologise For The Inconvenience - some cracky goodness that cracks me up every time I reread it 😁
Going Down - inspired by three glasses of wine and the Secret Santa at a work Christmas party several years ago. Also cracks my up every time.
There's so many more I could put on this list but I'll stop here. Now I'm gonna go finish rereading all of these!

Brock took one look at Darcy and groaned. “Oh for fuck’s sake, Lewis. This is ridiculous.”
She arched an eyebrow at him. “Can I help you, Commander Biceps?”
He ignored the nickname. It wasn’t even new. “What the fuck are you wearing?”
Darcy looked down at herself, as if there was a chance her clothes had magically changed themselves in the last minutes. “A French maid costume.”
“Why?” He demanded. “Is this torture? Are you trying to make me say something sleazy? Because I’ll be honest… I’m getting there.”
She snorted. “I lost a bet.” Darcy said simply.
Brock waited to see if there was anything else coming up, but no. Apparently a bet it was. “Fuck.”
“You seem grumpy.”
“Well, you seem…” He looked her up and down. “Not saying.”
Darcy smirked at him. “Is it the boobs or the garter?”
“Shut up, Lewis.”
