That One YA Dystopia Trilogy about Human Pets: Perfected

I read an entire book trilogy at once for this review, and it’s 2014 to 2018’s Perfected by Kate Jarvik Birch, a mainstream published series about humans being kept as pets.

Aw jeez.

I’ve never done a full trilogy at once, but after Lightlark I wanted to do something properly exciting. Slash disturbing. This will be roughly the same format I always do- full synopsis with discussion, and broader analysis. (And yes! This trilogy, which unilaterally earns 0 stars, is better than Lightlark!)

I write silly books about angels and demons and love as the world ends around you (and how maybe it can still be okay in the end anyways)

A naive angel befriends a bullied demon and that forbidden friendship kick-starts the apocalypse. About identity and love and what it's like to be a cosmic being not meant to have free will.

A huge swath of LGBT characters and stuff too, especially in the realm of questioning and experimenting. No real romance, just friendship, and ace/aro/queer stuff.

If you don't know, it's about impossible for indie authors to spread the word about their work. I'm a very ill and disabled person unable to work, so every reblog and especially review matters so much.

I offer free copies for anyone who wants one. Ideally you'd review, but I just want people to be able to read them.

Lightlark is joyless, a husk beyond parody, a checklist of every Island of Blood and Bone and Glass and Hearts that has come out in the last five years, built and sold on tropes and aesthetic boards. This is a book written by an author who is not a writer. It would fit in on the dregs of an amateur writing site with eerie perfection.

But Lightlark is more than that. You see, Lightlark is… a TikTok book.

Thoughts on Series 15 Episode 1 of TM UK:

Warning for spoilers:

- Mum thought Ivo was blind. No I don’t know why either.

- Frankie was the one my dad was most nervous about, but he ended up laughing along with him. Honestly this is my second exposure to Frankie outside of The Unbelievable Truth (and that one episode of QI that introduced me to him on panel shows, I’ve seen discourse before) and I like him so far.

- Speaking of Ivo and Frankie, I really liked Ivo’s radio 4 panel show audition. I hope he’s on TUT at some point. Though considering what Frankie said, I think he’s going more for Just A Minute. Either way, really like them both. Ivo on a boat and leaping over a cow makes Thursdays extra special

- Jenny was also fun. (Spoilers, but I liked everyone pretty generally.) I liked her crashing the boat. I think more older ladies should crash boats in otherwise idyllic places. That would make the world a little better.

- I loved Jenny sticking up for Ivo when the boat broke down because let’s face it: she probably did some damage. Do I think she’s to blame? No. Nor is Frankie to blame. But I am very happy she stuck up for Ivo. And that hug was both charming and funny.

- Kiell. I now know how to pronounce your name. I thought it was Key-ell, then Kyle, but it’s moreso Ky-ell. Which is sorta how its spelled. Idk, I’m not a pronouncer. But god I love him. I only know him as Mike from Ghosts, but I can see why he plays Mike from Ghosts. Exact same energy. Really fun. Reminds me of a mix between my brother-in-law and Munya from the previous series.

- Anyway more fun interactions in the live task between Kiell and Ivo killing each other. And Mae on the side killing themself. And Jenny and Frankie making it all anticlimatic. I don’t think Jenny was trying at the end. And honestly same girl. I’d take that four points rather than risk a zero.

- speaking of Mae, I’m so happy there’s a nonbinary contestant on taskmaster! And the way their pronouns were just used casually made me really happy. They deserved the win 100%.

- Overall I’m much preferring this series to 14’s debut. I thought 14 was spoiled because I was consuming 12’s content before (cause 12 is my favourite series). But I did the same today and came out loving it a whole lot more. Maybe 15 will be my favourite when all’s said and done. Maybe it’ll be ruined later (god I hope not). But honestly I really like this series. A lot. Don’t have a favourite contestant, but I’m leaning towards the youth task-wise, and the elder banter-wise. Honestly I love them all. Can’t wait for it all to come out.

So first of all, I'm sitting here after the second Champion of Champions episode finished airing but before I've been able to find it online, so I've been interacting with Tumblr very carefully. Opened it up but put my hand over the main bit to avoid seeing any spoilers about who won, so I could make a post about the just-released season 14 lineup. Then I saw this message, clicked on it, and then immediately realized that someone might have seen CoC2 and decided they wanted to say something about it to me, and I may have just wasted all my spoiler avoiding-efforts. I was very disappointed in myself for the split second it took this message to open, and I would like to thank you for sending something that was not the spoiler-y message I feared.

Instead, you sent me a really fun question! I love this, here are some initial answers, and I might come up with more later:

Ed Gamble doing the watermelon task from the very beginning of season 1.

Russell Howard doing the season 12 task in which they had to score a soccer goal.

Sarah Kendall doing the season 13 task where they had to keep their tongue out and lick everything.

I'd like to see Rhod Gilbert do every task in Taskmaster history, but especially high five a fifty-five-year-old.

I would also like to see James Acaster high five a fifty-five-year-old.

I wish they'd kept up the task about buying a gift for the Taskmaster, I think it would be fun to see everyone do that. But especially Bridget Christie. And Joe Lycett. And Mark Watson.

Hugh Dennis doing any of the hands-on tasks, like making a coconut flinging machine from season 5, or flinging a shoe into the bath from season 10. Basically, I want to see everyone from season 4 do all the tasks.

Iain Stirling do the task from the beginning of season 12, trying to hit Alex with a ball. Also Lou Sanders.

Mark Watson do any of the tasks with Fred the Swede, because Jesus that would be awkward.

James Acaster doing the season 9 task when they had to make a portrait of Greg on 16 different pages.

I'd like to see Rose Matafeo try to name American states while painting a wolf on a teapot.

I'd like to see Katherine Parkinson try to do all of season 1 by herself.

Lou Sanders send cheeky texts to the Taskmaster.

Sally Phillips do most of the season 13 prize tasks, because so many of them were geared toward helping her achieve her goal of making everything sexual.

Phil Wang doing the continuous noise task from season 8, because I think he’d try the same thing that he used for "best noise" in his own season, and I'd like to see him try to do that while running.

I'd like to see Rose Matafeo try to engage a toddler.

Desiree Burch do the glasses in a box task from season 7, to see her exasperated reaction when she first looks in the lab and sees the drinking glasses. I’m picturing her stacking one glass after another into the box while muttering “Of course, should have known, God, you guys!”

Okay that's what I have for now, this is a fun game. Thank you for sending me something to pass the time while I get annoyed about the new episode not being up yet (by which I mean, get very unfairly annoyed with the lovely people who out of the goodness of their hearts take time to upload these episodes so those of us outside Britain can watch).

Series 12 , Episode 1 thoughts and spoilers

1. I love them all from the start. Just, immediately.

2. Morgana calling Alex a little fucker. Morgana suggesting getting oral sex from Santa Claus was an appealing prospect. What a saucy lass! Someone in the youtube comment section said Greg is hot for her. I don’t disagree.

3. “Then, brother, this is not sensible.” Guz sounding like a wise old imam offering sage spiritual advice instead of a comedian haggling with another comedian about how best to pop a balloon. His shoes are TO DIE FOR. Do he, Mawaan, and Jamali share or go to the same shops? They’re so effortlessly cool. I will never be so stylish.

4. Sometimes, Alex Horne is hot. He just is.

5. Alan is bringing those goofy uncle vibes for sure. Your dad’s older brother who comes over and falls asleep within 5 minutes of sitting down and gets startled awake by the television. When I was ill about 8 years ago I started watching a lot of panel shows on youtube while I was getting well and imprinted on Alan. Adore him.

5. I couldn’t be happier with Desiree as the first American on the show (there is no American Taskmaster in Ba Sing Se). She knows what the fuck is up and is having a great time. The leggings she wore for filming the tasks are adorable.

6. Victoria! I was afraid she might fall into the clever person trap of being really shit at Taskmaster, but she’s doing a great job! Yes, she finished last, but only by 5 points and Greg and Alex even agreed it was a tight game. 12 points is respectable and SHE GOT THE BALLON WITH THE DART!
